WORK POLICIES FOR STUDENT WORKERS<br />

HENDERSON STATE UNIVERSITY<br />

The following policies apply to all student workers. The student worker is also<br />

subject to the departmental policies where he/she is employed.<br />

I. Eligibility of <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Work</strong>ers:<br />

1. A student worker must be registered and in good standing at the<br />

<strong>University</strong> and maintain at least half-time (6 hours) student status if<br />

employed on Federal <strong>Work</strong> Study and must maintain at least 12<br />

hours if employed on <strong>Henderson</strong> <strong>Work</strong> Study. If a student falls<br />

below the required number of hours <strong>for</strong> his/her position, he/she is<br />

subject to immediate suspension from the work program. Six hours<br />

is considered half-time status <strong>for</strong> financial aid purposes during a<br />

regular term and three hours <strong>for</strong> summer terms.<br />

2. A student worker must meet HSU Satisfactory Progress<br />

requirements.<br />

3. A Job Assignment must be secured from the Financial Aid Office<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e going to work. <strong>Student</strong>s will be paid only <strong>for</strong> hours approved<br />

on the Job Assignment. The Job Assignment must be signed by<br />

both the student and the designated supervisor be<strong>for</strong>e a student can<br />

go to work. A student will not receive a time card until the Job<br />

Assignment and all attached paperwork is returned to the Financial<br />

Aid Office.<br />

4. All work study students are required to file the Free Application <strong>for</strong><br />

Federal <strong>Student</strong> Aid (www.fafsa.ed.gov) each year. This should be<br />

done as soon as possible after January 1.<br />

II.<br />

Responsibilities of <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Work</strong>ers:<br />

1. It is the responsibility of student workers to be willing to work.<br />

2. The student should be consistently dependable, prompt and reliable<br />

in attendance, and work the required period of time.<br />

3. If a student must be absent from work, his/her supervisor should be<br />

notified prior to the assigned work time.<br />

4. A student may terminate employment and remain in good standing<br />

and eligible <strong>for</strong> employment in another student work position by<br />

giving notice at least two weeks in advance of the end of a semester,<br />

and by working the remainder of the semester as assigned. If a<br />

student terminates employment during a semester, he/she cannot be<br />

reassigned <strong>for</strong> that semester.


III.<br />

Payment of <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Work</strong>ers:<br />

1. Supervisors will be issued a schedule showing the dates <strong>for</strong> turning<br />

in time cards and the dates checks will be issued.<br />

2. <strong>Student</strong> payroll checks will be issued through the Business Office on<br />

appropriate dates.<br />

IV.<br />

Evaluation of <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Work</strong>ers:<br />

1. An evaluation will be made during the semester of the student's work<br />

experience. The record will be placed in his/her permanent file.<br />

Supervisors and students are encouraged to discuss the evaluation<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e it is submitted to the Financial Aid Office.<br />

V. Employee Grievance:<br />

1. Any conflict or misunderstanding of work policies or regulations<br />

should be discussed first with the student's immediate supervisor,<br />

then with the Financial Aid Director.<br />

VI.<br />

Dress Code:<br />

1. The student worker should dress appropriately <strong>for</strong> the job in which<br />

he/she has been employed. The guide <strong>for</strong> appropriate dress should<br />

be the way in which regular employees dress on the job in that<br />

particular department. Example: a student employed with the<br />

Maintenance Department will dress differently from a student who is<br />

employed in an office. Remember, you are representing <strong>Henderson</strong><br />

by being an employee. This representation should be in a positive<br />

manner as reflected through being dressed appropriately, being<br />

courteous on the telephone, etc.<br />

VII.<br />

Breaks:<br />

1. If a student worker works three consecutive hours, he/she should be<br />

given a ten (10) minute break.<br />
