Message from Board of Directors
Dear Members, Each of you will be receiving a ballot to add a Board of Trustees to help manage
Hindu Society. In 2008 HSNC President, Dr. Kumar appointed an Advisory Council to create a
proposal for the formation of a Board of Trustees. This team of 30 spent an enormous amount of
time and has created a new management structure that will provide long term stability for HSNC.
The team carefully studied many proposals and their impact on the organization. The amendment
is supported by the 2008 and 2009 Board of Directors and the entire Advisory Council. Listed
below are the signatures of 2008 and 2009 Boards as well as all of the past Presidents of HSNC
that support this Amendment.
We encourage you to vote yes when you receive the ballot in early August. This strong unified
endorsement should help you determine you should support this amendment by voting YES.

The Lion's Reflection
A cruel lion was king of the animals living in a dense
forest. He was extremely fond of killing the animals to
satisfy his hunger. The animals were constantly worried
with the lion's actions, and they decided to hold a
meeting with the lion to make an agreement. At the
meeting, the animals told the lion that they were scared
that if he kept of killing the animals, there will be none
left. One of the animals said, "We have come up with a
solution. We will send one of us daily to your den, where
you can kill and eat the animal." The lion agreed. The
plan went into action, and everyday an animal became
the lion's meal. One day, it was a rabbit's turn to go to
the den. The rabbit was very wise, and he thought of a
plan to save his life and the lives of the others in the
forest. The rabbit reached the den a little late and told
the lion, "Your Majesty, I am sorry for my deeds.
Actually, six rabbits were supposed to come today, but
five of them were killed and eaten by another lion who
claimed to be the true king of the forest." The lion
became furious and said, "Take me to the imposter. I will
show him who is king." The rabbit took the lion to a well.
When the lion looked into the well he saw his reflection.
However, he thought the reflection was the other lion, so
he growled and jumped in the well to kill the lion, but
drowned instead. The rabbit went back to the other
animals and told them what had happened. The animals
of the forest celebrated their freedom.
Moral: Intelligence is superior to physical strength.
HSNC becomes Certifying Organization of the President’s
Volunteer Service Award
Hindu Society of North Carolina has a long proud history of volunteer service. Our volunteers work thru the year to
serve the needs of community with activities like Health Fairs, Blood Drives, Social Welfare etc. They also organize
religious and social programs all year long.
In recognition of these outstanding achievements, HSNC is proud to announce the availability of the PRESIDENT’S
VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD, a prestigious national honor offered in recognition of volunteer
commitment. Established in 2003, this new AWARD is given by the President of the United States and honors
individuals, families and groups who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service over the
course of 12 months.
The PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic
Participation – created by President George W. Bush to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers make to our
nation. To learn more and find out how to qualify for the AWARD visit www.PresidentialServiceAwards.gov.
HSNC is joining thousand of organizations and businesses across the country to deliver this Award to our most
outstanding volunteers. As a Certifying Organization of the PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD, we can
nominate potential recipients and distribute the Award to those who meet or exceed the AWARD criteria.
To qualify for the PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD, volunteers simply submit a record of their service
hours to HSNC using the online hours tracking service of www.PresidentialServiceAwards.gov and we will verify
the service and deliver the AWARD. To use HSNC as certifying organization please enter our record of service key
ZMN-38860 in your profile.
Volunteer service hours are not limited to those performed on behalf of HSNC. However we ask that at least 80%
of qualifying hours should be for HSNC related activity. HSNC will process the award in October each year so that
awards can be presented during its anniversary celebrations in December. One of the requirements for the award is
that the hours should have been earned in past 12 months so for October 2009 processing all hours earned between
November 2008 and October 2009 will apply.
We will like all Om Squad volunteers to participate in the program. Volunteering in regular HSNC events will be
one of the criteria for being selected for volunteering opportunities like summer camp which every one wants to do.
Over next few months we will work out other details of the process related to these awards. For any questions
related to HSNC as a certifying organization please contact Aman Gupta at amangupta@hotmail.com.
HSNC Recycles
HSNC is pleased to introduce recycling
of plastic, glass and aluminum cans in its
facilities. The recycling carts and bins should be in place
by the time this newsletter comes out. Look for the
recycling sign.
Please note that no leftover food, paper and foam
products (plates / trays / cups etc) should be thrown in
the recycling bins and carts.
We appreciate your support.

Grand 2009 Navratri Mahotsav
Saturday, 9/19 – Sunday, 9/27
Navratri is most auspicious occasion in Hinduism. During Navratri, people from all walks of life perform Havan in temple,
worship Maa Durga and celebrate joy by participating in music, and dance.
Navratri is a festival celebrated over a period of nine nights (Nav-nine and Ratri-nights). The first nine days of the Ashwin
Shukla Paksha of the Hindu Calendar is devoted for the worship of the Goddess Durga. The tenth day is known as Vijaya
Dasami (day of Victory over evils). It is believed that on this day, Lord Rama had killed the demon Ravana. So, on this
day, effigy of Ravana is burnt.
