Attachment to Mr. Cairn's Message Regarding
Termination for Convenience of the P3 Contract for the Midtown Tunnel/Downtown Tunnel/MLK Extension Project
Jennifer Bolduc Chesapeake VA 23321 United States
I work in Norfolk. I live in Western Branch (Chesapeake). I was born and raised in Porstmouth/Western Branch. I
love the area. My children go to school in Chesapeake. This is where we want to live. It's dissapointing to think that
it will cost me at a minimum to drive to and from work more than $900 ADDITIONAL per year. That $900 does not
include the gas and maintanence on my car. I fully believe there needs to be an additional crossing and that the
downtown tunnel needs repair. However, tolls that high are crippling to the average household. What about college
students that scrape by? What about single mothers that need every penny of income to make ends meet? When
you break it down $75‐$100 per month doesn't seem like much to some, but it can mean a lot to others. This is only
on a personal level. It will have a huge impact on any commercial business that utilizes the crossings. Expect the cost
of goods to go up because this. If we collectively consider adding a $.1 gas tax we could potentially fund the project
without the tolls. Do the math. $.1 per gallon is an average of $.16 additional per fill up. That's an average additional
$9.60 PER YEAR. If there are 800,000 adult drivers in Hampton Roads that is roughly $7,768,000 additional dollars in
1 year. This seems like common sense. As always, common sense does not seem have any weight in politics. I hope
for Hampton Roads sake this does not happen. However, I'm proud to say I live here. If this happens, I will continue
2/9/2012 on living in Western Branch and commuting through the tunnel daily. I guess you can say, I'll take one for the team.
Elizabeth English Norfolk VA 23518 United States 2/9/2012 My husband and I both work in Portsmouth, that would put a strain on our already tight budget.
Truitt Bonney Norfolk VA 23518 United States 2/9/2012 There should be a gas tax, not tolls.
James Dyer Norfolk VA 23518 United States 2/9/2012 A gas tax would seem to be a way to allow everyone who benefits from tunnels to help pay for upgrades.
Charles Olson Norfolk VA 23518 United States 2/9/2012 Virginia needs a gas tax, not tolls.
By creating a public/private partnership our legislators are passing the buck. When the tolls are increased, which
they will be, that will be a tax increase. Our legislators should be the only ones increasing our taxes not a private
Patricia Ballard Chesapeake VA 23322 United States 2/9/2012 company. I won't pay a toll when any part of it is going to profit a private company.
James Bertram Haugh Norfolk VA 23505‐3331 United States 2/9/2012 Please just extend the VA Sales Tax to all motor fuels. Support the common good og the Commonwealth.
Lewie Gayton Virginia Beach VA 23452 United States 2/9/2012 Need roads. Add tax to gasoline tax not toll and fund roads with public funding not public‐private funding.
Richard Werkmeister Chesapeake VA 23320 United States 2/9/2012 Think it will cause extreme traffic delays
Deborah Brunick Portsmouth VA 23707‐1107 United States
Between myself, my husband and two of our three children who commute to ODU, the tolls would add about $300 to
our monthly bills ‐ and that does not include trips on the weekends to my familty in Virginai Beach. We will move out
2/9/2012 of Portsmouth. Add this to the gas tax.
Gary O'Dell Portsmouth VA 23701 United States
While I'm retired, live in Portsmouth, and only go to Norf. or VB maybe 2 times a year so the tolls won't affect me but
2/9/2012 it will devistate many who are now working. Where are the tolls in Northern Va.?
Bob Tucker Virginia Beach VA 23456 United States
If the Western part of our state doesn't want to help fund our roads and tunnels through the gas tax then we should
2/9/2012 charge them double when they come to our beaches.
Martina Finley Norfolk VA 23509 United States
I will be looking for another job in Norfolk or Va. Beach. Being that I haven't had a raise in five years, I cannot come
2/9/2012 up with the extra money for the tolls.
Herbert Donlin Chesapeake VA 23322 United States
roads are a basic functiion of governmen and belong to the people, they should not be GIVEN away. 13 1/2 %
2/9/2012 guarnnteed, ability to raise rates 3 1//2 % a year for the next 50 + years and a competition clause, RIDICULOUS!!
Douglas Greene Norfolk VA 23508‐2132 United States 2/9/2012 Because all of Virginia should pay for transportation; private companies should not profit.
Nixon Williams Chesapeake VA 23322 United States
This project will cripple the Hampton Roads economy for the next 58 years while lining the pockets of corporate
2/9/2012 investors.
Joseph W Hirn III Portsmouth VA 23704 United States
annual fees are compounded, tolls unnecessary, tolls will kill the ports. Maybe Hampton Roads should consider
2/9/2012 seceding and join either MD. or NC. Tolls will greatly impact tourism.
Terry E Riley Virginia Beach VA 23456 United States 2/9/2012 Raise the gas tax. Stop trying all these silly "tricks."
Stacey Mazor Chesapeake VA 23322 United States 2/9/2012 The tolls will negatively impact the citizens of this area. This is a bad idea.
