BIOETHICAL ISSUES IN THE FATWAS OF
SHAYKH AL-QARADAWI
The paper discusses fatwas (legal opinions based on Islamic sources)
of a leading Islamic scholar today, shaykh Al-Qaradawi, regarding three
major issues in bioethics: organ transplantation, euthanasia and abortion.
He answers the following questions: is a Muslim allowed to donate, during
his lifetime, an organ or part of his body for transplantation? If the answer
is yes, is that absolutely permissible or is it a subject to certain conditions?
Is it permissible to donate an organ only to one’s relative, or only to another
Muslim, or to any person? If such a donation is allowed, is it also
acceptable to offer body organs for sale? Is organ donation after death acceptable,
given the status of inviolability of the deceased person? Is this an
individual right of a person (will) who wishes to donate parts of his body
after his death, or does the decision rests with his family? Is it allowed for
state authorities to take away body organs from the deceased citizens in
order to save other citizens’ lives? Is it permissible to transplant organs
from animals to humans?
Al-Qaradawi provided detailed answers for these questions, as well as
the questions of euthanasia and abortion, based on Islamic sources. The
paper enables us to understand bioethical issues within the framework of
Islamic teachings.
FRIGANIZAM (FREEGANISM) –
