can be described by the following ten acting rules: 1) Individuals working
in technology or science are not personally responsible for their own actions
and negative application results; 2) The need for such action will be
covered with money, prestige, “interests” or the “higher interests” of one
group, nation, state, organisation, leader, ideology, etc., called “progress”;
3) The acting algorithm is: “If it is possible to create something new, the
right way is to do exactly that”; 4) The acting prejudgement is: “New is
good – traditional is bad”; 5) Nature is our enemy; 6) Technology is orientated
against nature; 7) Man is both master and creator; 8) Technology
and science have been ascribed elements of religion; 9) Not ready to share
– usurp of all; 10) The final prejudgement is: “Technology can solve (almost)
all our problems”.
The fragility of our technology based civilisation is evident. The natural
balance of the planet is in danger. The world’s social asymmetry is continuously
growing. The power of technology is expanding. These issues
require corrections, which can be achieved by: 1) a systematic reduction in
our large-scale misuse of technology; 2) introducing a long-term aim of the
use of technology: securing the long-term survival and welfare of human
civilisation on this planet; 3) introducing new ethics for engineers.
This new ethics for engineers must include the following points and
acting rules: 1) individual responsibility for one’s own actions and activities;
2) nature is not our enemy – nature is our mother which must be treated
with respect and love; 3) learn to share; 4) maximum is not optimum;
5) man is not master; 6) man is not creator; 7) our actions are limited; 8)
making money as a long-term goal is absolutely irrelevant; 9) being more
efficient does not mean being better.
Our actions and activities in technology must be evolutionarily corrected
and should balance between intelligence, ethics and wisdom including
long-term aims and the reduction of egoism and greediness. The development
trajectory for the future is already defined by Gandhi’s Seven
Sins plus 3 additional ones: 1) Wealth without work; 2) Pleasure without
conscience; 3) Knowledge without character; 4) Commerce without morality;
5) Science without humanity; 6) Worship without sacrifice; 7) Politics
without principle; 8) Technology without safety; 9) Information without
reliability; 10) Education without reality.
For the future of our civilisation, each person must be responsible for
one’s own actions or lack of action. The modern world is out of a natural
