MEDICAL AND XENOBIOETHICAL INTERWEAVING WHEN APPROACHING A PSYCHIATRIC PATIENT Reflecting on the links between medicine and xenobioethics, the authors show how to approach psychiatric patients suffering from delusions, hallucinations or ideas in which they meet extraterrestrials and/or are incorporated by them. In doing so, the authors do not consider the objectiveness of either the physical or metaphysical reality of extraterrestrial forms of life. There are many different causes of delusions, which can roughly be divided into two large groups: neurological and psychiatric. Neurological disorders involve delusions, which are common in patients whose pathology lies in the temporal lobe (epilepsy or tumour). Discussing psychiatric disorders is much more complex partially because of the larger number of diseases which in their differential diagnosis include delusions. It is important to emphasise that when approaching such patients, their delusions should not be either encouraged or discouraged. Furthermore, developing mutual trust is essential. Finally, allowing for the possibility that encounters with extraterrestrials may both exist and happen, doctors should 169
