Unatoč činjenici da većina kockara ne igra prvenstveno radi dobitka,
prisutnost novca je ipak bitna: novac je bitan kako bi igra imala smisao, jer
je on medij pomoću kojeg sudionici naznačuju svoje sudjelovanje u igri.
ON SOME BASIC CATEGORIES OF GAMBLING –
TIME, SPACE, AND MONEY
In the majority of works which deal with gambling, gambling is being
referred to as a material phenomenon; as a form of spending, a form of
spare time activity, and as a legitimate form of entertainment in the modern
capitalist society. However, gambling is a special type of expenditure that
contains a unique experiential component as well.
In games of chance, the present is of the essence. For gamblers, the
field of their attention is defined through the development of events on
which they have waged their money. Since they have no influence on the
present, then the past and the future also have no bearing on the gaming
experience in any portion of its course.
The perception of space, however, is inseparably tied to the perception
of time, because the former defines our “external” perception, whereas the
latter defines our “internal” perception.
Despite the fact that most gamblers don’t primarily play for the profit,
the presence of money is still important, however, as money is crucial in
giving the game its meaning, because money is the medium which the participants
use to claim their participation in the game.
