養
和 醫 院 的 前 身 是 香 江 養 和 園 , 於 1 9 2 2 年 由 香 港 一 群
著 名 的 華 人 醫 生 和 社 會 賢 達 創 辦 , 目 的 是 為 華 人 社
群 提 供 醫 院 服 務 , 接 受 私 家 醫 生 診 治 及 經 過 專 業 訓 練 的 護 士
護 理 , 能 在 舒 適 的 環 境 中 安 心 康 復 。 自 成 立 以 來 , 養 和 醫 院
秉 承 為 大 眾 提 供 優 質 醫 療 服 務 的 宗 旨 , 並 積 極 拓 展 , 不 懈 地
力 求 進 步 , 貢 獻 社 會 。

養 和 園 是 當 時 唯 一 專 為 華 籍 醫 生 和 病 人 服 務 的 醫 院 。 在 二 十
世 紀 二 十 年 代 初 期 , 香 港 醫 院 是 分 別 由 殖 民 地 政 府 或 外 國 教
會 辦 理 , 病 床 嚴 重 短 缺 之 餘 , 可 供 華 籍 醫 生 使 用 者 , 可 說 是
絕 無 僅 有 。 由 於 本 地 華 人 對 醫 療 的 需 求 日 增 , 養 和 園 的 創
立 , 適 逢 其 時 , 使 華 人 可 選 擇 政 府 或 教 會 提 供 以 外 的 醫 療 服
務 , 造 福 人 群 。

養 和 園 位 處 跑 馬 地 , 現 址 原 為 「 愉 園 」 , 是 受 廣 大 市 民 歡 迎
的 消 閑 勝 地 , 俯 瞰 馬 場 , 景 致 怡 人 。 奈 何 好 景 不 常 ,1918 年
的 馬 場 大 火 , 竹 棚 觀 馬 台 倒 塌 著 火 , 釀 成 數 百 人 死 傷 , 間 接
令 愉 園 生 意 一 落 千 丈 , 最 終 由 本 院 籌 辦 人 以 低 價 購 入 地 皮 。
本 院 將 原 有 的 兩 幢 建 築 物 改 建 作 療 養 院 之 用 , 於 1 9 2 2 年 9 月
開 始 服 務 , 設 有 二 十 八 張 病 床 , 由 五 位 護 士 及 數 名 華 籍 醫 生
專 責 照 顧 病 人 。
第 一 屆 董 事 會 成 員 包 括 何 高 俊 醫 生 ( 主 席 ) 、 尹 文 楷 醫 生 、 關
心 焉 醫 生 、 黃 菖 霖 醫 生 、 趙 學 醫 生 、 馬 祿 臣 醫 生 及 吳 天 保 醫
生 。 周 懷 璋 醫 生 於 1923 至 1926 年 間 任 董 事 會 主 席 。
養 和 園 成 立 約 三 年 後 , 在 1 9 2 5 年 6 月 , 連 日 大 雨 觸 發 院 後 山
泥 傾 瀉 , 堆 塞 於 病 室 及 樓 宇 中 , 對 大 樓 造 成 嚴 重 破 壞 。 董 事
會 被 迫 關 閉 療 養 院 以 作 善 後 清 理 , 維 修 工 程 長 達 十 六 個 月 ,
需 接 近 萬 元 的 維 修 及 清 理 費 用 , 對 早 已 緊 絀 的 財 政 狀 況 而
言 , 無 疑 是 雪 上 加 霜 。 直 至 1926 年 10 月 , 始 恢 復 接 收 病 人 。

The Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, formerly known as
“The Yeung Wo Nursing Home”, was established in 1922 by a
group of leading Chinese medical practitioners and prominent Hong
Kong residents. The object was to provide hospital facilities for the
Chinese community and for patients to be taken care of by their own
doctors and trained nurses in a tranquil atmosphere and congenial
environment. Since the admission of its first patient, the Hospital has
been providing comprehensive medical services to the public with a
firm commitment to the delivery of high quality and continuous
improvement of service for the benefit of the community.

The Yeung Wo Nursing Home was the only private institution catering
to the needs of Chinese patients and practitioners in the early 1920s,
when the other hospitals were either government or mission run
institutions. Until then, Chinese doctors were unable to find a hospital

to which they could, at ease, admit their patients for treatment. It
became clear that more hospital facilities not under the auspices of the
government medical services were needed for the indigenous people.
The Yeung Wo Nursing Home was built at “The Happy Retreat”, once
a popular amusement centre, overlooking the racecourse in Happy
Valley. The premises were acquired after the occurrence of the tragic
Derby Day fire on 26 February 1918. More than 600 people died
when the stands at the racecourse collapsed and went up in flames.
From that time on, the Happy Retreat had lost the majority of their
customers as the place was close to the site of the tragedy. The owners
were eager to sell the place which was then purchased by Yeung Wo’s
founders at a low price.
As soon as the property was acquired, the existing buildings were
converted into a nursing home. It was in September 1922, that patients
were admitted for the first time: the 28 beds were looked after by five
nursing sisters and a group of western-trained Chinese doctors.
The first Board of Directors of Yeung Wo consisted of Dr. Ho Ko
Tsun (Chairman), Dr. Wan Man Kai, Dr. K. L. Kwan, Dr. B.C. Wong,
Dr. Jeu Hawk, Dr. Ma Luk and Dr. Wu Tin Pao. Dr. Chau Wai Cheung
served as Chairman from 1923 to 1926.
Three years after opening, a landslip occurred at the slope behind
the two buildings and caused considerable damage in June 1925. The
wards and other premises on the ground were piled with rocks and
mud washed down from Stubbs Road. The management had to close
down the Hospital for 16 months and spent a hefty sum of HK$10,000
on the clean-up and repairs. All services were suspended until
October 1926.
