We are pleased to release the 2013 calendar based on Hindu dharma shastra and drika siddhanta. This 

calendar is specially prepared for the Greater Oklahoma City area, and it may not be applicable in other 

parts of the world. All time presented here is adjusted for Daylight Saving Time. 

People usually align the Hindu festivals with the English dates based on the Indian calendar. They think that 

if an Indian calendar says “Janmasthami” on a certain date, say September 2 nd 2010, then it will appear as 

September 2 nd everywhere in the world. The USA is 10:30 to 15:30 hours behind India, so some people will 

think it will also come the next day in the USA, i.e. September 3 rd 2010. They also argue that their family 

priest in India has told them to celebrate on this particular date and according to him the Indian calendar 

will apply to all places in the world. This is a completely wrong assumption. If the Earth was flat then you 

can use Indian calendar everywhere as sunrise sunset will happen all places equally. We won’t have any 

timezones and the world will have only one timezone. Surya Siddhanta, Maharishi Vashistha, 

Bhaskaracharya taught us to prepare the panchangam based on the longitude, latitude of the place you live 

for these reasons you cannot bring a calendar from India and use abroad. 

The English date and changes at midnight; whereas the Hindu date (or Tithi) and day does not change at 

midnight. Hindu day changes at Sunrise. All days are from one Sunrise to another Sunrise. Sunday will start 

at one Sunrise and end at the next Sunrise.The Hindu date – the Tithi changes depending on the position of 

the Sun and Moon. It can change anytime between two Sunrises. That is to say that if Prathama Tithi ends 

today at 23:02 it does not mean that Dwitiya Tithi will end tomorrow at the same time. It can end at 18:00, 

18:09 or later. 

Tithi: In the lunar calendar the Moon takes a month for each revolution around the Earth. The lunar 

calendar is divided into two groups called Pakshas. The first one is called Krishna Paksha (or dark 

fortnight) or wanning moon. The second is called Shukla Paksha (or bright fortnight) or waxing moon. 

Each Paksha is divided into 15 Tithis. The first 14 Tithis are the Sanskrit numbers from 1 to 14 (Prathama, 

Dvithiya etc). The 15th Tithi of Shukla Paksha is Poornima (full Moon) & the 15th of the Krishna Paksha is 

Amavasya (Moon is not visible as it is closest to the Sun). 

Lunar Month: A lunar month consists of 30 Tithis and each Tithi then corresponds to the time taken by 

the Moon to move 12 degrees with respect to the Sun. Krishna Paksha Tithis are in the darker color and 

Shukla Paksha Tithis are mentioned in the red color. Names of lunar months are Chaitra, Vaishakh, Jyestha, 

Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwayuja, Kartika, Margasira, Pushya, Maha, and Phalguna. 

Solar Month: A solar month begins when the Sun leaves one rasi and moves into the next. The solar 

month names are based on 12 signs, they are Mesha, Vrishbha, Mithuna, Karka, Simha, Kanya, Tula, 

Vrischika, Dhanush, Makara, Kumbha, and Mina. This system is widely used in Tamilnadu, Kerala, West 

Bengal, Orrisa, Punjab and Assam. 

Nakshatra: The path of the moon around earth is divided into 27 segments or Nakshatras. A nakshatra 

changes when the moon leaves one of these 27 segments and enters the next. Nakshatras are in italics. They 

are Ashwini, Bharani, Kritika, Rohini, Mrisgashirsh, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Poorva 

Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyestha, Moola, Poorva Shadha, 

Uttara Shadha, Shravan, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha, Poorva Bhadra, U.ttara Bhadra and Revati. 

Timings listed in the Calendar: The Tithi & Nakshatra times indicate a time when the Tithi or 

Nakshatra ends. The Panchanga uses the Vedic definition of a day, i.e., A day starts with Sunrise and ends 

with the subsequent Sunrise. Thus, a Tithi with a time of 29:00 indicates that the Tithi ends past midnight 

but before the next Sunrise at 5:00 AM (29:00 – 24:00) on the next calendar day. Hence 24:00 means 00:00 

hours of the next day, 25:00 means 1:00 AM of the next day, and 29:00 means 5:00 AM of the next day. This 

is standard time notation for any Panchangam. The time for Sun’s samkramana is when Sun will enter that 

rasi or sign on that day. e.g. Makara 4:36 means Sun is entering Makara rasi at 4 hour 36 minute. All other 

times are the ending times. 

Rahukalam / Sunrise / Sunset Table: This calendar has rahukalam, sunrise & sunset table as well. 

These are calculated for Greater Oklahoma City area. 

How festival dates are determined? The usual rule to observe a festival is to check the Tithi prevailing 

at the Sunrise. Each festival has different rules. For example Ganesha Chaturthi has to be oserved when the 

Chaturthi Tithi is observed during the 8th/15th part of the dinmana. The dinmana is the difference between 

local Sunset and Sunrise. If Chaturthi is not prevailing during that period then take the second day. 

For example, if one Tithi is observed at moonrise in India it may or may not exist during moonrise on the 

same day in a different part of the world. If you are in America then it will be observed on previous day or 

the next day if you are in Japan, Fiji, Australia and other countries. For example if a total lunar eclipse is 

visible in India at 5:00 AM it will happen on the previous day in the USA. For these reasons Indian 

Panchangam you bring from India cannot be used outside of India. 

Uttarayana / Dakshinayana: The season occur based on earth’s position around the Sun. This is due to 

Earth’s tilt of 23.45 degrees. The Earth circles around Sun with this tilt. When the tilt is facing the Sun we 

get summer and when the tilt is away from the Sun we get winter. Because of this tilt it seems like the Sun 

travels north and south of the equator. The Uttarayana is the Sun appearing to move north. The 

Dakshinayana is the Sun appearing to move towards South. This causes rise to seaons and dependent on 

equinoxes and solstices. 

There is a common misconception that Makar Samkranti is the Uttarayana. This is because at one point in 

time Sayana and Nirayana Zodiac were same. Every year equinoxes slides by 50 seconds due to precision of 

equinoxes, giving birth to Ayanamsha and causing Makar Samkranti to slide further. As a result if you think 

Makar Samkranti is uttarayana then as it is sliding it will come in June after 9000 years. However Makar 

Samkranti still holds importance in our rituals as a Samkranti. All Drica Panchanga makers will use the 

position of the tropical Sun to determine Uttarayana and Dakshinayana. Hence January 14 th isn’t 

Uttarayana. Actual Uttarayana occurs on December 21 st /22 nd of every year. For more details please visit

Bhakthi Yoga – Sage Naradha 

Devarishi Narada is The Pioneer of this Bhakthi. According to our 

scriptures Sage Narada has defined and preached the Bhakthi 

yoga. Narada means, the one who gives divine wisdom. In his 

prior birth, Sage Narada was a gandharva, who had been cursed to 

be born as the son of a maid-servant to serve saintly priests. The 

priests being pleased by Narada and his mother’s service, allowed 

them to have some of the Prasad that was offered to Lord Vishnu. 

He freed himself from the earthly bondages and did penance 

meditating on Lord Vishnu in his heart as taught by the priests 

whom he had served. Lord Sriman Narayana appeared in his 

magnanimous form and blessed him to be born as Narada to 

propagate Lord’s Bhakthi to the rest of the mankind. For the rest 

of his life, Narada focused on his devotion and worship of Lord 

Vishnu. 

Narada influenced Sage Valmiki to compose Srimad Ramayana and 

Veda Vyasa for Srimad Bhagavath. Both these scriptures teach 

mankind about humanity and pure devotion to Lord. Narada 

means, the one who gives divine wisdom. Sri Krishna says in Gita, 

out of all the divine sages I am Narada. He was incarnated to 

teach Bhakti yoga, he is called Bhakti-avatara. He inspires 

Jeevatma with Bhakthi and lead them towards Paramatma in 

every Yuga.

NAVA VIDHA BHAKTHIS 

• Bhakti Yoga is the path of love and devotion. The devotee uses the combined energies of all emotions and 

transmutes them, sublimating them into the highest of all emotions: prem, which is pure, unconditional, divine love. 

The devotee is, in fact, not even seeking enlightenment or God, he is just overflowing with his love for God. This 

path obviously suits and appeals to people with an emotional temperament. It may also be the easiest—no mind 

and body control as in Raja Yoga, no intellectual or intuitive prowess required as in Jnana Yoga. 

Bhakti Yoga proceeds by qualities of the heart. Love, emotion, happiness, kindness, and surrender are the qualities 

of the heart that sustain this path. Love of God is the greatest virtue that a man can cultivate; through this 

develops love for the creation of God and for his children, all beings. Compassion, tolerance and helpfulness to 

others emanate from the heart in which the love of GOD grows. 

Devotion and love for God increases through the nine modes of devotion (nava-vidha bhakti), described in Srimad 

Bhagavata (containing the lilas of Lord Krishna 

• Sravanam: Listening to stories of the lilas or play of the Lord or your deity. One source of these stories is the 

Puranas, each one being dedicated to a deity or incarnation of God. 

• Kirtanam: Singing of God's glories. Many mystics and yogis have spontaneously composed and written devotional 

songs, which can be chanted. 

• Smaranam: Constantly remembering the presence—name and form—of the Lord. Unceasing prayer is one form of 

it. 

• Padasevanam: Developing the bhava (state of mind) that you are serving and worshipping the Lord's Feet. 

• Archanam: Worship of God through rituals such as puja, havan or homa. Ideally, rituals should be accompanied by 

true feelings, but their regular practice is also a way to develop true feelings of devotion. 

• Vandanam: Prostration to the Lord to express one's respect and love. Prostrating physically to the ground even 

develops humility. As a bhava you cultivate the awareness that the Almighty is present in the altar in front of you 

and in all names and forms. 

• Dasyam: The devotee is developing the feeling of being the Lord's servant. This will weed out pride, selfishness, 

arrogance and egoism, which are all based on avidya, ignorance. 

• Sakhyam: Feeling of friendship. This bhava helps the devotee establish a personal relationship with God, picturing 

him as his best friend. 

• Atmanivedanam: Complete surrender of self, which is the highest aspect of bhakti. One's ego is offered to the Lord 

and nothing but the atman remains and non-duality is experienced.

Sravana Bhakti 

Sravana is hearing of Lord's Lilas. Sravana includes hearing of 

God's virtues, glories, sports and stories connected with His 

divine Name and Form. The devotee gets absorbed in the 

hearing of Divine stories and his mind merges in the thought 

of divinity; it cannot think of undivine things. The mind loses, 

as it were, its charm for the world. The devotee remembers 

God only even in dream. The devotee should sit before a 

learned teacher who is a great saint and hear Divine stories. 

He should hear them with a sincere heart devoid of the sense 

of criticism or fault-finding. The devotee should try his best to 

live in the ideals preached in the scriptures. One cannot attain 

Sravana-Bhakti without the company of saints or wise men. 

Mere reading for oneself is not of much use. Doubts will crop 

up. They cannot be solved by oneself easily. An experienced 

man is necessary to instruct the devotee in the right path. 

King Parikshit attained Liberation through Sravana. He heard 

the glories of God from Suka Maharishi. His heart was 

purified. He attained the Abode of Lord Vishnu in Vaikuntha. 

He became liberated and enjoyed the Supreme Bliss.

Kirtana is singing of Lord's glories. The devotee 

is thrilled with Divine Emotion. He loses himself 

in the love of God. He gets horripilation in the 

body due to extreme love for God. He weeps in 

the middle when thinking of the glory of God. 

His voice becomes choked, and he flies into a 

state of Divine Bhava. The devotee is ever 

engaged in Japa of the Lord's Name and in 

describing His glories to one and all. Wherever 

he goes he begins to sing and praise God. He 

requests all to join his Kirtana. He sings and 

dances in ecstasy. He makes others also dance.

Smarana..is remembrance of the Lord at all 

times. This is unbroken memory of the Name 

and Form of the Lord. The mind does not think of 

any object of the world, but is ever engrossed in 

thinking of the glorious Lord alone. The mind 

meditates on what is heard about the glories of 

God and His virtues, Names, etc., and forgets 

even the body and contents itself in the 

remembrance of God, just as Dhruva or Prahlada 

did. Even Japa is only remembrance of God and 

comes under this category of Bhakti. 

Remembrance also includes hearing of stories 

pertaining to God at all times, talking of God, 

teaching to others what pertains to God, 

meditation on the attributes of God, etc. 

Remembrance has no particular time. God is to 

be remembered at all times without break, so 

long as one has got his consciousness intact.

Archana Bhakti 

The Archanam or Archa Bhakthi is the most important 

way of Bhakthi, which is worshiping the Vigraha. 

The Deity in the temple is a living form (Saguna). . 

Veda also describes one of the Lord’s forms as space 

or formless (Nirguna). Space or Formless God is 

difficult to worship. Agama scriptures (science of 

worship) states that the energy of space is invoked 

into wind, and from wind to fire and fire to water by 

the mantras. This water is poured over the deity and 

the deity is consecrated. Deity has life from then on. 

By daily Archanam and celebrating Utsavas ,the 

energies of the deity are stroked and increased and 

when we go to such temples and pray, the living 

energies there, answer our prayers. 

The Deity in the temple is given ritualistic bath 

(Abhishekam), dressed in finery and jewelry (Alankara), 

and offered elaborate worship(Archanam), offered food 

and water (Nivedana). At night there is a ritual of 

putting the Lord to sleep (Sayana pooja) and in the 

morning, a ritual of waking the Lord (Suprabhatam). 

Such rituals are pleasing to man as he identifies with 

them and, he gets grace and his prayers answered. 

This kind of worship has been practiced from time 

immemorial for the benefit of oneself and the universe. 

The Archanam offered by King Prithu is 

considered to be of very high order. 

Because of his worship, earth is called 

Prithvi. Regular Archanam creates a holy 

atmosphere in our Temples and keeps 

our hearts and homes peaceful.

Dasya Bhakti ..is the love of God through servantsentiment. 

To serve God and carry out His wishes, 

realizing His virtues, nature, mystery and glory, 

considering oneself as a slave of God, the Supreme 

Master, is Dasya Bhakti. 

Serving and worshipping the Murthis in temples, 

sweeping the temple premises, meditating on God and 

mentally serving Him like a slave, serving the saints and 

the sages, serving the devotees of God, serving poor and 

sick people who are forms of God, is also included in 

Dasya-Bhakti. 

To follow the words of the scriptures, to act according to 

the injunctions of the Vedas, considering them to be 

direct words of God, is Dasya Bhakti. Association with and 

service of love-intoxicated devotees and service of those 

who have knowledge of God is Dasya Bhakti. The purpose 

behind Dasya Bhakti is to be ever with God in order to 

offer service to Him and win His Divine Grace and attain 

thereby immortality.

Atma-Nivedana Bhakti 

Atma-Nivedana.. is self-surrender. The devotee offers 

everything to God, including his body, mind and soul. He 

keeps nothing for himself. He loses even his own self. He 

has no personal and independent existence. He has given 

up his self for God. He has become part and parcel of 

God. God takes care of him and God treats him as 

Himself. Grief and sorrow, pleasure and pain, the devotee 

treats as gifts sent by God and does not attach himself to 

them. He considers himself as a puppet of God and an 

instrument in the hands of God. This is the culmination of 

all aspiration and love. 

The nine modes of Bhakti are the ways in which a devotee 

attains the Supreme Ideal of life. A devotee can take up 

any of these paths and reach the highest state. The path 

of Bhakti is the easiest of all and is not very much against 

the nature of human inclinations. It slowly and gradually 

takes the individual to the Supreme without frustrating 

his human instincts. It is not direct assertion of God, but a 

progressive.
