2010 Charger Football
Dr. John Willson returns for
his fourth season, and his second
tenure, as the kicking coach for
the Chargers.
Dr. Willson was inducted
into the Hillsdale College Athletic
Hall of Fame in 2005 and has
spent many years as part of the
coaching staff. He also was the
founding coach of the college’s
women’s track and cross country
programs.
Dr. Willson’s athletic legacy
has continued to this day, with his
granddaughter Clara entering her
junior season with the Charger
volleyball team. Granddaughter
Anna became an All-American in
track in the spring of 2010.
Steve Otterbein
Steve Otterbein played football
at Hillsdale College for four years. In
February 2010, he came back home.
Otterbein was named the team’s wide
receivers coach, coming on the heels of the
departure of offensive coordinator Barry
Fagan.
Otterbein, the oldest son of Hillsdale
head coach Keith Otterbein, spent three
seasons as a graduate assistant at Eastern
Michigan University after graduating
from Hillsdale. While at EMU, he
worked with the team’s defensive linemen
every day at practice, and assisted with
practice preparation for the program’s
scout team offense and special teams.
He also had extensive behind-the-scenes
responsibilities in all aspects of EMU’s
football program, including working with
the team’s out-of-area recruiting program.
Otterbein earned his degree from
Hillsdale in May 2007, majoring in secondary education and physical education,
along with a minor in math. In April 2010, he received his master’s degree in
sports management from Eastern Michigan.
Otterbein was a two-year starter at safety for the Chargers, and was selected
to the GLIAC All-Academic Team three times.
Quarterbacks
Mark Nicolet
Mark Nicolet is entering his
first season as part of the Charger
coaching staff, and will coach the team’s
quarterbacks. He is only months removed
from his playing days, as he’s spent the
past two summers playing professionally
overseas.
After graduating from Hillsdale
College in 2008, Nicolet played
professional football for teams in Sweden
and Spain, leading the former to that
country’s football national championship
in 2009. Nicolet has also played for the
Green Bay Freeze of afl2.
While at Hillsdale College, Nicolet
set a new standard of excellence, both as
a quarterback on the field and a studentathlete
off the field. He was named GLIAC
Player of the Year in 2007 and the GLIAC
Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2007-
08 athletic year. He set several singlegame
and single-season school records
while suiting up for Hillsdale from 2004-
07. He and his wife Meagan were married
in January 2010.
