Softball team poised to power into
the GLIAC’s elite in 2010 season
If there is a phrase that can sum up the expectations of the players
and coaches on the 2010 Hillsdale College softball team, it may be:
“It’s time.”
It has been four years since the Charger softball team played beyond the
regular season. Four years since Hillsdale was in the GLIAC Tournament.
Head coach Jamie Meyers and the team are determined to end that streak
this season.
“We came close to the tournament last year, and that was not good
enough last year. And it won’t be good enough this year,” Meyers said. “I
believe we have the kind of team this season that should make the tournament,
and can be right there for the championship.”
Only two upperclassmen reside on the team: senior OF Devon Trimmer
and junior P Kellie Hirst. But Meyers has assembled two deep and
impressive recruiting classes in her first two summers on the recruiting
trail, and the rewards of that work will play itself out on the field this spring.
In 2009, Trimmer became the first Charger since Ashley Wolff in 2005
to be named First-Team All-GLIAC. The team’s only lefthanded batter and
thrower, Trimmer has been the starting centerfielder for three years and
led the team in batting average twice, already in her career. Her skills make
her the ideal leadoff hitter for a lineup with generous amounts of power
behind her.
Hirst has carried a big load for the team in the first half of her career,
as a starting pitcher as well as a hitter. She was an honorable mention All-
GLIAC player in 2008, and plays both positions with power.
Hillsdale’s freshman class combined for 16 home runs and 73 runs batted
in during the 2009 season. That class now has one year’s worth of experience
under their belts, and will be reinforced by a similarly talented
freshman class this season.
Jessica Guertin hit six homers to lead all returning players, and is one
of the strongest players on the team. A fiery competitor, Guertin will enter
the season as the starting third baseman.
One of the team’s sophomores won enough respect from her teammates
and coaches to be named co-captain. First baseman Jennifer Berlet is one
of the team’s most well-rounded hitters, and will carry the leadership role
that the title “captain” brings with it. Berlet has a strong swing and brings
athleticism to her position in the field.
Sophomore Allison Hetrick can position herself as one of the team’s
most versatile players. She got extensive playing experience at second base
and shortstop last season, and Meyers plans to have Hetrick work as a lefthanded
“slap” hitter in 2010. Hetrick can fill a key opening in the lineup
with that skill, and her infield versatility will be a huge asset to the team.
Like Hirst, sophomore Laura Homan figures to carry a big load both
in batting and pitching for Hillsdale this season. Meyers pointed out that
Homan was the team’s most improved player during the fall ball season,
and is hitting and pitching with more power.
Supporting that strong sophomore class is a group of eager and readyto-play
freshmen, many of whom could see significant playing time in
their first seasons.
Although not among the first group of players signed by the program,
Kate Hoop has been impressive in the infield during the team’s early season
practices, according to the coaches.
Taylor Schulty is another hitter/pitcher combo player who has great
potential. While not the tallest player on the team, she hits and throws
Sophomore Laura Homan will be one of the team’s go-to players in
2010, both as a starting pitcher and middle-of-the-order hitter.
with as much velocity as anyone on the roster, according to Meyers.
Infielder Miriam McKay joins the Chargers after a very successful prep
career at New Baltimore Anchor Bay, one of the best programs on the east
side of the Detroit area.
A pair of freshmen will play behind the plate, as Becca Strother and
Chelsy Jacobson will figure prominently into the team’s catcher rotation.
Brittany Hulett comes to Hillsdale via Poway, California, and is a tall,
righthanded pitcher that gives the staff additional versatility and depth.
Other first-year players to watch include Teresa Patterson and Amber
Fausneaucht, who will play in the infield and outfield, respectively.
2010 Hillsdale College Softball
Head Coach
Jamie Meyers
Jamie Meyers will enter her third season coaching the Hillsdale
College softball program in 2010. After a fine playing career for the
Chargers, Meyers took over the program in September of 2007, and since
then, has upgraded the depth and talent throughout the program thanks
to tireless recruiting and refining of players’ skills.
Meyers brought in one of the biggest recruiting classes in the program’s
history for the 2009 season, and followed that up with a talented group
of eight players coming in 2010. That kind of foundation should allow
Meyers to place her stamp on the program she contributed much to as a
player from 2004-07.
A native of Toledo, Ohio, Meyers was a four-year starter for the
Chargers from 2004-2007 and ended her career as the program’s all-time
leader in career home runs with 19. She was a three-time Second Team
All-GLIAC player at shortstop and was team captain for two years. She
was named to the GLIAC’s All-Academic Softball Team twice and was the
team’s MVP in 2005. Meyers attended Sylvania Northview High School,
graduating in 2003.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hillsdale College, with a
major in history and minors in political science and classics.
Meyers has worked on building the softball program from the ground
up, integrating new fundraising projects and implementing a much more
comprehensive offseason workout regimine for the players.
Meyers gives credit to former Chargers softball coach Sunny Jones for
being her coaching role model.
Head coach Jamie Meyers is in her third season in charge of the Hillsdale
College softball program.
“I loved playing for Sunny when she was here (2005-06), and felt like
I was able to reach my full potential as a player. I want our players to have
that same feeling while they’re a part of this program today.”
Assistant coach Michelle Tatlock
Entering her second season as the assistant
softball coach for the Chargers is Michelle Tatlock.
A graduate of Florida Southern College, Tatlock
was a standout player for a softball program
perenially ranked in the nation’s top 20.
With Hillsdale, Tatlock works primarily with
the team’s outfielders, but also assists the pitching
staff. She also assists Meyers in every aspect of
the program, including practice scheduling,
fundraising and recruiting.
Tatlock played professionally for the
Philadelphia Force in National Professional
Fastpitch, from June-August of 2008.
While at Florida Southern, Tatlock was a fouryear
starter for one of the most successful Division
II programs in the nation. As a sophomore in
2006, she was named to the South Regional All-
Tournament Team, where she batted in seven runs
and batted .385 for the team. She had one of her
best games that season against Hillsdale, when she
drove in four runs with a home run and a double
on March 18, 2006.
She finished her career with 190 hits, 133 runs
scored, 109 runs batted in, and a career batting
average of .304. Her 18 career triples are also
fourth in school history.
Tatlock is a 2004 graduate of Osceola High
School in Seminole, Florida, where she played
softball and volleyball. She was her softball team’s
MVP in 2003 and 2004, and was named her
school’s Most Athletic Female as a senior.
Tatlock was a finance major at Florida
Southern and plans to pursue a master’s degree
in teaching. She was born Feb. 16, 1986 and is the
daughter of Keevan and Linda.
Athletic Director
Don Brubacher
On July 30, 2008, Don Brubacher
was named the fifth athletic director in
the past 54 years at Hillsdale College.
Following the strong character and
tradition established by people like
Jack McAvoy and Dr. Mike Kovalchik
is no small task, but it’s one Brubacher
has fully embraced entering his second
year on the job.
“I’ve been extremely impressed with
the quality of coaches, athletes and staff
we have here at Hillsdale. They have
made this a very easy transition for
me,” Brubacher said. “I not only want to
maintain the great athletic tradition we have here, but to help our
coaches achieve greater success in the future.”
Brubacher knew plenty of success in his nine-year stint as athletic
director at Tabor College, an NAIA school located in Hillsboro,
Kansas. An alumn of the school, Brubacher coached men’s and
women’s basketball at Tabor, as well as men’s and women’s soccer
during a career that saw him spend nearly 30 years on the field of
play. He takes a lot of pride in his classroom teaching experience
as well, and draws many parallels between the experience a college
student has in the classroom compared to that on the athletic
field.
“Our national search has produced an individual with an
impressive understanding of the role that athletics plays in the
formation of student character and how character development is
essential to the mission of our institution,” said Hillsdale College
President Dr. Larry Arnn. “In addition, we have found a man
with a long, proven record of success in leading a college athletic
program. Don Brubacher will be a perfect fit here.”
Brubacher’s coaching career saw him earn many Coach of the Year
accolades, and he led his men’s basketball teams to 12 conference
championships. His women’s soccer teams also won a regular
season conference championship, and a postseason tournament
conference title.
Brubacher started his college career at Heston College in Kansas,
where he played soccer. He then moved on to Tabor College and
played soccer and basketball, and was a First-Team All-Conference
selection in basketball before his graduation in 1975.
Associate A.D.
Claudette Charney
Claudette Charney is entering her
eighth season with the Hillsdale College
athletic department, filling the
roles of both head women’s basketball
coach and associate athletic director.
Charney handles all of the NCAA
clearinghouse and compliance issues
for Hillsdale College, in addition to her
coaching duties. She is also the school’s
senior woman administrator.
She is coming off the finest season of
her 20-plus year coaching career, guiding
the Chargers to the 2008-09 GLIAC
championship. She also coached Katie
Cezat to becoming the top player in all of Division II in 2008-09.
Cezat was named the national player of the year by every organization
and website that covered Division II women’s basketball last
year.
Charney is Hillsdale College’s all-time leader in women’s basketball
coaching wins with 137, and three GLIAC South Division titles
in her seven-year tenure. She also coached Hillsdale’s only other
All-American player, Stephanie Heid, in 2002-03.
She also served as the head coach at Grand Valley State, and is
still the all-time winningest women’s basketball coach at Saginaw
Valley State. Charney and her husband, Dr. Mark Kosciuszko, reside
in Hillsdale.
Head Athletic Trainer
Lynne Neukom
Lynne Neukom is officially the head athletic trainer at Hillsdale
College starting with the 2009-10 school year. She served in that
role on an interim basis in 2008-09.
A lifelong resident of Hillsdale County, Neukom graduated
from Hillsdale High School in 1987, and enrolled in Hillsdale
College that fall. She graduated in 1991 with a degree in Health
and Physical Education. She worked as a graduate assistant for
longtime head athletic trainer Paul Beachler, and went on to earn a
master’s degree in health education – with an emphasis in athletic
training – from Western Michigan University in 1993.
Her husband, Jake is a physical therapist and a certified athletic
trainer working for the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He
regularly assists with the care of the athletes. Their children are
Hannah (8), Jacob (6), and Keturah (4). They reside in Hillsdale.
