It is not official yet, but the Hermitage Girls have once again Won the Gross
Category in the RWGA Team Matches. This makes 5 in a row for our
ladies!!! Job well done by one and all!
The Hermitage Ladies Team played at the 66 th Virginia State Team Matches
Monday, August 27 th – Thursday, August 30 th . Their Qualifying Round was
very special since they played well enough to be in a Playoff for the Championship
Flight. They ended up losing to a Birdie in the C Group. Up to that
point the other 2 twosomes were all square.
Their first match was against Broad Bay Country Club in Virginia Beach. They
won that match so they could play on the last day. CCV beat The Highlands to
meet our team in the Finals on Thursday. It was for sure a great battle by all 3
twosomes, but unfortunately Hermitage lost (by only 2 points to a possible 54
point match).
STATE TEAM MATCH (cont.)
Their last team Match was at Hermitage against the Country Club of Virginia and they played on the Sabot
Course. The weather conditions were perfect for a wonderful day of golf on one of the prettiest courses in
Virginia. The course was in immaculate shape and the ladies played the ball down with no problem.
THE TEAM RESULTS WERE:
Gross: Hermitage 47.0 CCV 25.0
Net: Hermitage 43.5 CCV 28.5
For the Love of Lobster was an unqualified success. We ordered 160 lobsters and sold them all.
If you have not routed out your favorite chili recipe for the cook off on October 14 th , please do so and
contact Emily to book your spot. I cannot promise we will not steal your recipe, but we will give you credit.
October is here and with it the much loved (at least by us cooks) and versatile hard squash. Their many
uses cover being simply baked with a little butter and brown sugar, pureed into vitamin packed silky soups
or being used as serving vessels for fall stews and soups. Use the smaller acorn squash as a single serve
vessel or a pumpkin as a stunning tureen. Spaghetti squash microwave beautifully and once split a few
draws of a fork render tender strands of flesh that are equally delicious finished with marinara or garlic and
olive oil. Many of them are interchangeable so don’t be put off if you cannot find a specific one, and
canned pumpkin can help stretch the pulp if you are a little short for a soup. Don’t forget to dry and roast
the seeds as a tasty garnish or power packed snack.
Roasted and sugared cubes of pumpkin or butternut make great additions to fall salads along with dried
fruit. Squash enriched risottos make satisfying entrees or sides for seared scallops, grilled shrimp, or
broiled rockfish. Pumpkin or Hubbard squash make for a lively fall upgrade to a bread pudding. Here is a
risotto recipe to get you started.
Risotto
INGREDIENTS
2 cups butternut squash pulp
scraped from two large baked
butternut squash, this does
not have to be exact
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 onion, minced
1 cup Arborio rice
1/3 cup dry white wine
5 cups hot chicken stock
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
cheese
Salt and ground black pepper
to taste
DIRECTIONS
To bake the squash prick them a few times with a fork,
place them in a roast pan, add a half cup of water and
cover with foil. Place in a 350 degree oven for about one
hour, until tender when pierced with a skewer. Allow to
cool, cut in half, remove the seeds and scrape out the
flesh.
Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add
onion; cook and stir for 2 minutes until the onion begins to
soften, then stir in the rice. Continue cooking and stirring
until the rice is glossy from the butter, and the onion
begins to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes more.
Pour in the white wine; cook, stirring constantly, until it
has evaporated. Stir in the mashed squash and 1/3 of the
hot chicken stock; reduce heat to medium. Cook and stir
until the chicken stock has been absorbed by the rice, 5
to 7 minutes. Add half of the remaining chicken stock,
and continue stirring until it has been absorbed. Finally,
pour in the remaining stock, and continue stirring until the
risotto is creamy. Finish by stirring in the Parmesan
cheese, and seasoning to taste with salt and pepper.
Helpful Unplayable Lie Option
You play your third shot, a simple pitch from left of
the green. But you skull the ball, skipping it over
the green into the most difficult bunker on the
course. You have a terrible lie and the lip is six
feet high. What’s more, you know you are a poor
bunker player—it might take several swings to get
out. In such a dire situation, take advantage of
one of your options under the No playable lie rule:
You may, with a one-stroke penalty, play the ball
from the spot where the original ball was last
played. In this case, you could play your fifth shot
from the spot of the original pitch. This could end
up saving you a stroke or two, since you would
have been playing your fourth from the impossible
bunker lie.
FROM THE GOLF SHOP: 9 HOLE NEWS
A Women’s Place is Over a Hot Iron…indeed it is if you’re talking about the kind of iron meant to strike that little, elusive
white ball! On September 20 th , the 9 Hole ladies and their guests participated in record numbers to show just how
“HOT” those irons can get as they played in this year’s Member-Guest. Thirty-four teams came out for 9 holes on the
Manakin to enjoy our themed Hot Iron tournament. Featured on display were vintage golf irons, antique hand irons,
garden cut flowers, and clothes lines displaying vintage underpinnings along with photos of Hermitage’s famous women
golfers. The domestic nuance of the tournament was played up with a Par 3 Hole Hamper Pitch, which had our
members and guests using their irons to take a best pitch to make it into the wicker hamper for a prize. Cash prizes
were given to 1 st & 2 nd Gross & Net winning teams along with themed towels being given for those winners of Closest to
the Line and Closest to the Pin. Look for the winners’ names for those receiving prizes to be mentioned in next month’s
news.
On the evening before the tournament, Betsy Gallagher hosted a cocktail party at her home so that members and
guests could enjoy meeting one another prior to tournament play. Thank you to Betsy for graciously kicking off the
tournament.
As the saying goes, “Behind every successful women is another group of women”. How true in the planning of this
tournament! Thank you to our fellow 9 Holers for your enthusiasm and support… from donating irons and clubs to your
committee work. A big thanks to Matt & Forrest, who always back us up with all our antics, as well as to Emily and
Brenda for all their help in registration/luncheon logistics.
Speaking of IRON LADIES…we congratulate one such lady, right here in our midst as Brenda Seyler this month completed
a challenging Ironman Triathlon in Madison, Wisconsin. In a record time of 14 hours and 34 minutes, Brenda
swam 2.4 miles in Lake Monona, then biked 112 miles through Wisconsin farmland and finished with a 26.2 mile run
through the University of Wisconsin. HATS OFF to this true Iron Lady! Way to go Brenda!
This month wasn’t without additional fun as the 9 Hole ladies had their own version of Hermitage
“Course Clippings”! A golf challenge took place on one of our Thursday play dates pitting
two player teams against Forrest in a “Beat the Pro” competition. If he was defeated , the
winners (and we heard there were several…ahemmm), gave Forrest a little trim of his lovely
locks. Check out the 9 Hole bulletin board for the proof!
Other 9 Hole golf activities this month included the Invite-A-Club day, with Salisbury members
visiting the Herm, and a trip by thirteen 9 Hole members to Willow Oaks for their invitational.
Coming up in October, our last month of 9 Hole golf for 2012, be sure to sign up for the following
play dates:
October 11th: Bingo, Bango, Bongo (tee times TBD)
October 18th & 19th: 9 Hole Club Championship (Shotgun)
October 25th: Last Hoorah (Shotgun)
News on the 2013 horizon, Betsy Gallagher and Helene Meyer have volunteered to Co-Chair the 9 Hole League for the
next season. Thank you, ladies, for stepping up to this position. Please consider volunteering your efforts to help Betsy
& Helene on the board as they plan our next year’s league activities.
Lastly, we wish to say “Welcome Home” to Pam Crowder’s son from his service in Aghanistan. Also, congratulations to
Heidi Hall for being named the Goochland Christmas Mother for 2012. Best to you both, Your friends in 9 Hole!
FLU SHOTS
Wednesday, October 10th
11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Millions of people that are unprotected are affected by the
Influenza virus each year. We will make it a little more
convenient for you to protect yourself and your loved ones by
offering Flu/H1N1 vaccinations this month. On Wednesday,
October 10th from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., the pharmacists from
Kroger will be giving the vaccinations at the Sports Center. If
you would like for Kroger to submit a claim to your health insurance
so that you only pay your prescription co-pay on the day of
the flu shots, please bring a copy of your Health Insurance or
Medicare card to the Sports Center by Friday, October 5. You
will fill out a release form and both will be submitted ahead of
time so you only have to pay your co-pay on October 10 when
you come in for your vaccination. Mark it on your calendar and
call Bambi Cocke at 708-8935 for more information and to
reserve your appointment for your vaccination.
of Hermitage, you are entitled to your own orientation to our Fitness Center. We can not only show
you our equipment and facilities, but we can advise you on a personal fitness plan to get started out
on your own. If you’d like more intensive and personal guidance in your fitness routine, why not try
Personal Training? In October, if you purchase a 10 session package of training, you will receive an
additional session FREE! That’s 11 PT sessions for the price of 10. Our trainers are extremely
YOUTH DYNAMIX PROGRAM
Whether you have an elite youth athlete, a child that just
doesn’t enjoy physical activity, or an overweight adolescent,
this enthusiastic program educates and motivates them –
whatever their individual wellness or performance goals may
be. Dynamix is a 12 week individualized program for our
HCC youth and their friends (aged 10-17) that coaches and
educates them with a mix of physical activity, nutritional
guidance and motivation. It is designed around active and
healthy lifestyles with personalized plans dedicated to your
youth’s individual goals and capabilities. With your child’s
commitment to this unique program, they will receive an
initial meeting with one of our Youth Fitness Specialists,
who will be their Coach for the next 12 weeks, to establish
baseline measurements, record your child’s medical
background, their fitness and athletic history (IF it applies)
and their specific performance goals. In addition, they will
meet with a Fitness/Athletic Nutrition Specialist to evaluate
their nutritional needs. After the complete evaluation, your
youth will receive a personalized workout plan, nutritional
guidance, individual training sessions, and 3 week
“check-ups” to record baseline changes. With their
participation in the 12 week program, they also receive
group “Training Camp” sessions. The program is only $300,
and they can begin anytime between October 1st and
October 19th. Call 804.784.4968 to set up an appointment
today.
STRENGTH IN
NUMBERS
On Tuesday, October 23rd,
at 11:00 a.m. we invite you
to our Strength in Numbers session.
This is a FREE program intended just for
those of you who are new to the Sports
Center here at Hermitage Country Club,
or just new to fitness. Designed as an
“informal” strength training workshop,
Bambi Cocke, Wellness Director, will
focus on specific muscle groups, show
you how to use the equipment, and make
sure you feel comfortable with form and
settings before you try the exercises.
She can help you with your new or former
workout and advise on any changes you
should make in accordance with your
goals for health and fitness. No
reservations needed – just show up. It’s
a fun and lively group setting, and
remember – the more questions you
have, the better!
