Conclusion:<br />

A substantial amount of new archaeological evidence for industrial activity in early medieval<br />

Ireland has been discovered in recent years. <strong>The</strong>se excavations have produced a more<br />

cohesive over-view of craft-working and production in Ireland during this time period by<br />

highlighting the role of the smaller secular sites. <strong>The</strong> identification of charcoal production pits,<br />

for example, augment our understanding of smelting from this period, but also add further<br />

insights into contemporary land-cover and land-management. While this report has collated<br />
