The Heritage Council provided advice to the Minister on the following areas in particular: · Policy paper on Irish Thatched Roofs · Policy paper on Ireland’s Landscape · Unpublished Excavations in the Republic of Ireland 1930 - 1997 · A Policy Framework for the Museum Sector · Report on Human Remains in Irish Archaeology Raising awareness and appreciation of our heritage · Awarded 260 Grants in the areas of Local Heritage, Publications, Archaeology, Wildlife, Museums & Archives and Buildings at Risk · Organised Museum of the Year Award · Sponsored Tidy Towns Award · Coordinated 66 heritage specialists on the Heritage in Schools panel, in partnership with the INTO. Heritage specialists made 460 visits to schools in 2002 · Supported development of web-based project on "The Big House" in association with the Library Council · Secured promotion of heritage in TV Series · Sponsored National Planning Awards and Planning Achievement in Conservation Award Local authorities and heritage management · 2 new Heritage Officers posts in Local Authorities · Continued the Heritage Training and Development Programme for Heritage Officers · Carried out 13 Heritage Appraisals of Local Authority Development Plans · Contributed €218,651 to the implementation of four County/City Heritage Plans (Dublin City, Counties Offaly, Laois and Sligo) · Carried out a Natural Heritage Parish Survey jointly with Carlow County Council · Promote habitat mapping as part of Local Area Plans with Galway County council
1. Heritage Information - Collection and Dissemination Inventory of Historic Gardens Facilitated meetings which led to the establishment by Dúchas of a pilot survey of historic gardens in County Louth. External review of Heritage Council grants for architecture The external independent review commissioned by the Heritage Council on the administration of its architectural grants scheme was completed in 2002. As well as making useful recommendations, the consultants stated that the Council’s grants are to be "commended in the highest terms" Funding study The review of financial supports for the architectural heritage commissioned by the Heritage Council was completed in 2002. The Council will publish its recommendations on the findings in 2003. Stained glass window survey The Council continued to fund the survey of stained glass in Church of Ireland churches in a further two dioceses. This brings to eight the number of dioceses surveyed by Dr. David Lawrence and jointly funded by the Heritage Council and the Representative Church Body. Habitat Mapping Methodology The Heritage Council commissioned the development of a Habitat Mapping Methodology that it is hoped will standardise initial habitat mapping in Ireland. This methodology will form a companion volume to the Guide to Habitats in Ireland, which was published by The Heritage Council in 2000. Proposals for the Establishment of a National Biological Records Centre The Heritage Council has agreed a series of recommendations for the establishment of a National Biological Records Centre, proposals that have received support from at least 20 state agencies, third level institutions and non-governmental organisations. These proposals were developed by a Working Group which was tasked with building on a commissioned study that outlined a framework for a biological data management
