Summary of Achievements
Over the period of the Plan, the Heritage Council seeks to protect and enhance the
richness, quality and diverstiy of our national heritage for everyone. It works with its
partners, particularly at local level, to increase awareness of our national heritage and
to highlight its importance to public policy and everyday life.
Heritage Information – Collection and Dissemination
· Inventory of Historic Gardens
· External review of Heritage Council grants for architecture
· Review of Funding for Architectural Heritage
· Stained glass window survey
· Production of a Habitat Mapping Methodology
· Proposals for a National Biological Records Centre
Best practice in heritage conservation and
management
· Completed restoration of Mayglass Farmstead, Co. Wexford
· Completed Conservation Plan for Bere Island, Leamonaghan, St.
Mary’s Church Kilkenny,
Kilkenny City Walls
· Produced guidelines for the developing and Marking of Waymarked
Ways
· Opened Cosan na Naomh Pilgrim Path
· Initiated Waterway Corridor Study in partnership with Galway County
Council, Offaly County Council, Waterways Ireland and Offaly and
Kildare Waterways.
· Continued work on St. Brendan’s Cathedral, Clonfert, Co. Galway
· Carried our survey on Dromore Bat Roost
· Commissioned 28 Conservation Reports in 15 different counties
· Promotion of Best Practice by Staff
Placing heritage at the heart of public life
· Submitted comments on 13 appeals to An Bord Pleanála
· Assess impact on the natural heritage of Ireland’s CAP Rural
Development Plan 2000-2006
· Proposals for the establishment of an agri-environment scheme
for the more intensively managed farmland
· European Environmental Advisory Council Conference held in Kilkenny
