Policies & recommendations for future use of the <strong>archaeological</strong> and <strong>built</strong> <strong>heritage</strong> resource<br />
contained within the waterway corridor<br />
Policy<br />
• Raise the profile of cultural <strong>heritage</strong> within the relevant communities adjacent to the waterway<br />
Recommendations<br />
• Promotion of the part of the local authorities of respective <strong>heritage</strong> plans and their<br />
implementation by means of public forums, progress reports and media coverage<br />
• Organise a series of seminars on a range of topics including an awareness of the <strong>heritage</strong> of<br />
towns and their historical urban development, care and conservation of medieval churches and<br />
graveyards, the industrial, <strong>built</strong> <strong>heritage</strong> and underwater <strong>archaeological</strong> resource and<br />
<strong>archaeological</strong> legislation<br />
• Promote the formation of local historical and/or <strong>heritage</strong> groups and facilitate their activities via<br />
liaison and regulating an active interest party role<br />
• Promote community involvement during <strong>Heritage</strong> Week on a large-scale creating an annual<br />
festive event benefiting both the local communities and the tourist industry<br />
• Organise seminars on how to present and publish local history materials and subsequently<br />
support the publication of local histories by making grants available towards publication costs<br />

• Make information on the <strong>heritage</strong> of the waterway more easily available to all<br />
Recommendations<br />
• Establish publicly accessible sources of <strong>heritage</strong> information in a concise format via web-based<br />
and hard copy mediums available in public libraries, tourist offices, local authority offices,<br />
including links on each respective website<br />
• Improve/provide informative signage (directional, educational and in both Irish and English) on<br />
<strong>heritage</strong> sites where public access is taking place/should be taking place<br />
• Support the development of a group structure with a key responsibility being to develop and<br />
maintain a network of walking routes and greenways adjacent to the waterway<br />
• Provide <strong>heritage</strong> training for tour guides leading to a development of both land and water-based<br />
<strong>archaeological</strong> site visits geared towards the local community and tourist industry<br />

• Formulate a consistent basis of approach throughout the waterway corridor regarding<br />
conservation of the <strong>archaeological</strong> resource<br />
