Waterford<br />

Structures were uncovered in excavations along Bakehouse Lane which joins Peter Street at<br />

the north to Lady Lane at the south at the western end <strong>of</strong> the town (Fig. 309). Traces <strong>of</strong><br />

early houses were uncovered along Bakehouse Lane beneath the cemetery <strong>of</strong> St. Peter’s<br />

church. <strong>The</strong> earliest structures fronting the north <strong>of</strong> Peter Street also pre-dated the earthen<br />

defensive ditch and bank, indicating an ‘unprotected’ westward expansion <strong>of</strong> the town.<br />
