Editors’ Comments
This past week
I visited the Terry
herd at Whitehall,
MT to view their
calves, prior to
shipment to the
feedlot. These
calves are destined
to go to a Hereford
Byron Bayers
beef program. This is a beautiful
set of calves and a group any
breeder would be proud to sell.
They have raised their weights over
100# in about five years and the
quality level keeps getting better.
These folks keep trying to get
individual data back on the
carcasses but each year there is
another excuse why the carcass
data is not returned. It seems as
though the packer doesn’t want the
This is the first
issue we’ve had in
December. In the
past we’ve had
many requests for
a December issue
and this year we
decided to try it. I
think you’ll like it Marc Hotchkiss
— we do. Please let us know what
you think because we’re already
planning for next year.
Speaking of next year it’s hard
to believe 2005 is almost complete
and 2006 is only a few days away.
This has been a year of tremendous
change. Ridgefield Farms started
harvesting cattle in the upper
Midwest this November. Boy, talk
about boosting the morale of
Hereford breeders and commercial
people in the Dakotas and the rest
Ridgefield Farms moves headquarters,
processing operations, moves forward
By Jill Hotchkiss
In what has been a roller-coaster ride of a year
for our region’s Hereford branded beef company,
Ridgefield Farms of South Dakota, it appears that
the program is back on track and moving forward.
On November 1, Ridgefield relocated the
company headquarters from Huron, SD to
Flandreau, SD. It was only a move of about 125
miles in distance but miles more in community
support and financial benefits. The Flandreau City
Council voted to provide Ridgefield Farms with
financial assistance essential to make the move to
the new community and to activate a task force
committed primarily to building the Ridgefield
Farms’ fabrication facility. Ridgefield Farms
continues to own its building site in Huron and
continues to consider Huron in its long term plans
for future production.
“The city of Flandreau has given Ridgefield
Farms a wonderful opportunity and they fully
believe in the project. I applaud Flandreau for
wanting to bring this project in and become a leader
both in South Dakota and the beef industry
nationwide,” said Arnie Van Berkel, Vice President
of Sales and Cattle Procurement.
commercial and registered, think about who have bred pigment into Hereford cattle
Byron’s Editorial... sure changes from north to south and east don’t have much of a problem but if you
(continued from page 1) to west. Where it is cold, the coat of hair ignore pigment, you can suffer. I think that
producer to know what they are selling. I
tell people that if the buyer comes back,
your carcass data and the feeding ability
of your calves is probably good. If they
don’t come back to see you then you had
better wonder if your cattle have a serious
flaw. Most commercial producers are trying
to use the breeding with good carcass
qualities but so many other things enter
into the decisions such as bull price,
soundness, fertility, milk, temperament, and
yet surprisingly enough, marking.
Pigment is really getting to be a big deal
selling a Hereford bull. Most commercial
people demand it. Things breeders,
really is important, yet in the warmer
climates the cattle can have shorter hair
that must shed off.
We sold a bull to Zimbabwe some years
ago and one of the things I had to assure
the folks of was that the bull would shed
off his long hair. How many of you have
ever noticed that some Herefords carry a
lot of hair year around? That is good for
some, bad for others. Another interesting
thing that changes is the marking. In the
north country, where teat sunburn is a big
winter-spring factor, a lot of pigment in
cattle is really important. The breeders
is why in the southern states pigment and
marking are less important to the breeders. I
could well be wrong on that point.
I can remember when, if your cattle were
not blond or yellow as they would say, a lot
of people were not interested. It seems as
though that day is probably long gone, as
it should be. Did you ever think how much
easier it would be to breed black cattle and
not worry about the color and markings?
How many of your decisions have to do
with color and markings? Of course, I would
have to ask on the Angus, where did the
white underneath come from? I can
Located 2 miles west of Hoven
on Hwy. 20 and 47
remember about 25 years ago I was asked
to judge the cattle at the Oregon State Fair.
The Angus field man told me to “dump”
any cattle with white underneath as it was
a sign of other genetics. But today many
of the Angus cattle I view have some white
underneath. They do have that problem
and select against it in the good herds.
Who ever said being a purebred breeder
is easy? I talked to an old friend of mine at
the recent NILE show in Billings. Jim and
his family run 1600 brood cows and they
are now all Angus. Jim ran one of the top
Hereford commercial herds in Montana in
the ‘50s through the ‘90s. When his son
came on to run the ranch he told his Dad,
“We cannot continue to fight this sunburn
problem and I think we must go to black
bulls.” Jim said, “I hated to change but I
could see his point.” They now run 80
Angus bulls. Jim did say that no
replacement heifer is kept with white on
her bag or belly.
You can see where a lot of our market
went in the snow country. I tried to argue
the pigment issue with Jim but that did
not go too far. Another big commercial
breeder who is in deep snow country
always picks bulls with pigment and Bill
claims that he has less bag trouble than a
lot of Angus breeders in his high country.
Bill claims that putting pigment in the
Hereford is a matter of selection. Bill says
that they have not bought a Hereford bull
in the last 30 years without good pigment.
It was good to hear that Ridgefield
Farms has rolled their first carcasses off
the line in the Midwest. This helps the
entire Hereford industry move on. The
more demand for Hereford beef, the better
the pricing structure will be, and that will
feed back to the bull market. It does not
matter if the beef is Certified Hereford Beef
or Premium Hereford Beef, it is good for
our industry. Some of the bickering about
one or the other by various factions totally
disgusts me. We need to be one voice and
that is Hereford. That goes for horned and
polled too.
This our first issue of Hereford America
to be published in December. Because of
demand we have added an additional
issue. With the big Denver show coming
in January, many people can advertise
their product and potential buyers can
view what is available that they may
consider. It is interesting to me how many
breeders are looking for a bull or semen,
for the next year’s breeding season. Good
luck! I am sure you can find him.
Merry Christmas to all our American and
Canadian friends, and to all our friends
and readers throughout the twelve
different countries of the world that read
Hereford America, and all of us at
Hereford America hope that year 2006 is
good to you. We sincerely appreciate your
support the past years.
Along with moving its headquarters,
Ridgefield also shifted its beef
production and fabrication from
Washington Beef in Toppenish, WA to
PM Beef Holdings in Windom, MN. On
November 9 th the first group of Northern
Plains cattle were processed at the PM
Beef plant. This strategic move was
made to connect Ridgefield’s investor
base in South Dakota along with local
cattle supply. This marks a total shift in
Ridgefield’s production from
Washington Beef in Toppenish, WA,
where the company had been
processing and fabricating cattle since
early 2001. Washington Beef secured
their cattle supply in the Northwest.
“Ridgefield Farms’ activities are going
to significantly improve the demand for
Hereford and British cross baldy cattle,”
said Brian Simon, Hereford breeder and
chairman of the Ridgefield board.
For beef producers in the Dakotas,
Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Montana
and Wyoming Ridgefield Farms’ move
will have an immediate and positive
affect on the local industry. Beginning
with 500 head the first few weeks,
Ridgefield plans to move up to full
production over the next several weeks.
“This plan will have tremendously
positive effects on the Hereford
industry,” said Simon. “To put this into
perspective, if every bull sires 30 calves
and 10 calves are kept as replacements
and the other 20 get the PHB label on
them there will have to be over 4,200
head of bulls in the pasture every year
to produce the offspring to satisy the
consumer demand for PHB.”
Ridgefield Farms Premium Hereford
Beef is sold primarily to upscale
restaurants, hotels, country clubs and
food service vendors from across the
United States, Puerto Rico and the
Caribbean. The depth of flavor,
succulent tenderness and consistent
juiciness of Ridgefield Farms Premium
Hereford Beef continues to impress
chefs and connoisseurs around the
world. The company’s customers
include hotels and restaurants such as
The Pierre Hotel in New York, the Ritz
Carlton in Boston, Plump Jacks Cafe in
San Francisco, Craft Steak in Las Vegas,
The Inn at Castle Hill in Newport,
Innisbrook C.C. in Tampa, Equinox in
This high quality beef is the product
of cattle where each animal is at least
50% Hereford and always 100% British
in breeding. Like the Certified Hereford
Beef Program of the American Hereford
Association, the Ridgefield Program is
branded Hereford
product lines in the
United States.
The Hereford breed
has long been
considered the
premier breed in
performance and
genetic base. Early
maturity and
consistent production
provides producers
with the best potential
and consumers with
the best results. Breed integrity is central
to the success of Ridgefield Farms in
the Ridgefield Farms Premium Hereford
Beef program. USDA and BQA
Certification programs support the
continued commitment of Ridgefield
Farms to produce a
guaranteed consistent
quality in tenderness
and taste.
The exquisite eating
characteristics of
Hereford beef of years
chefs nationwide,
many of whom have
now replaced prime
beef on their menus
with Ridgefield
Farms’ Premium
Hereford Beef (PHB).
PHB was the winner of the Best
of the region! They see it as another
marketing option available for Herefordinfluenced
cattle that can be used by
feedyards and commercial producers.
Please call or e-mail us if you have any
questions on this additional marketing
opportunity.
What’s in store for the next year? I
think I can predict several changes.
Increased pressure on the beef industry
to source-identify cattle with the niche
markets leading the way. Some people
are hesitant about doing this but it is
here to stay so let’s make the best of it
and use it to our advantage. We should
learn from history and one lesson to be
learned is “people who take initiative
reap the reward.” In our business we
hear and see, and talk to a lot of
consumers of our product, beef.
They’re saying, demanding and willing
to pay for a product that has an identity.
What a great opportunity! Giving our
consumers what they demand and in
return we get paid more for identifying
the better (and poorer) traits of our breed
and improving our cattle and bottomline
at the same time.
Jack Ward and Jay Elfeldt gave a
presentation at our SD Hereford
Association annual meeting this year. It
was very informative and what little I
without time
constraints and get
more questions
answered.
The South Dakota
Hereford Association
had a hugely
successful weekend
in November. They held their annual
meeting, election of officers and then
the annual banquet on Friday evening
with about 125 people in attendance. A
lot of times people come away from an
event remembering and savoring things
that happen that were not planned. So it
was with our banquet. Each year at the
end of our banquet we auction off pages
for our SD Breeders directory. This year
we had just sold the last page when it
was brought to our attention that a hat
had been found without an owner (Yeah,
right...), and thus ensued a bidding war
over who would get this hat. The owner
of the hat, John Grassel, realized whose
The whole gang of instigators.... Art Handel (left); Janelle
Bischoff, modeling the hat in question; John Grassel, the
victim turned entertainer; and Chisum Peterson, auctioneer.
hat it was during the bidding and that
made it all the more fun. “Friends of
John Grassel” bought the hat, donated
the proceedings to our John Leibel fund
and returned the hat to it’s rightful
owner. John Grassel then got up front
and the best of Jay Leno couldn’t hold
a candle to the next 15 minutes. John
had the crowd showing all types of
emotion from laughing till it hurt, tears
of emotion and pride in breed and
country. What a great privilege to learn
from our seasoned breeders and hear
their advice and wit!
How Can You Write It All Down —
Bud Snidow: A Piece of American Hereford History
By B. Lynn Gordon
When visiting with Burman Cephas
Snidow, better know as ‘Bud Snidow’,
about his years in the livestock industry
it’s almost impossible to archive it all
into one story. For someone with a
history like Snidow’s, having worked
with thousands of people during his 32-
year tenure as an employee of the
American Hereford Association (AHA)
and his 20-plus years of continued
involvement in the beef industry after
retirement, one is in awe of the details
and stories he can tell. As Snidow says,
“Once you reach 80 – you become a
historian, naturally.”
The spry 88-year-old hasn’t forgot a
date, a bull, an acquaintance’s name or
pinnacle moments in the livestock
industry for the past
60 years. Maybe, it’s
because as he says
and laughs, I’m a
graduate of
Princeton – well,
Princeton, West
Virginia high school
that is.
Snidow along
with his seven
brothers and sisters
grew up in the times
when cows were
milked to feed the family, money was
scarce and each child took their turn
doing chores to help the family survive.
Snidow always knew from his early days
in 4-H showing sheep that he wanted to
be in the livestock business. I sure
would have liked to have showed a steer,
but a good steer calf at that time cost
$30 and a sheep project was only $15,
he recalls.
Marc’s Comments....
(continued from page 5)
Just got an e-mail from a breeder
in Iowa thanking Hereford America
for being at the Clay County Fair
at Spencer, IA. It’s activities and
breeders like this that I really enjoy
and make this “paper” business all
worthwhile.
Hereford America wishes all the
best Christmas ever and during this
time between Thanksgiving and
Christmas, stop a moment and
remember how this nation came
to be. A nation of people wanting
the freedom to live and worship
freely and helping those that don’t
have that freedom. Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year!
The spry 88-yearold
hasn’t forgot a
date, a bull, an
acquaintance’s name
or pinnacle moments
in the livestock
industry for the past
60 years.
He went on to receive a degree in
animal husbandry from Virginia
Polytechnic Institute (VPI), Blacksburg,
VA. It was there he started to meet some
of the influential people in the livestock
industry. His livestock judging coach –
Paul Swaffar – was a great mentor to
Snidow and later was his boss at the
AHA.
After graduation from VPI, he
accepted a position with the Virginia
Breeder magazine, a large horse
publication covering the eastern states.
Snidow filled the role managing other
livestock news and later became editor
of the publication. His time at the
publication was a very fond time. Not
only did he learn about the livestock
publication industry, he began to court
Hilda Brown who
later became his wife.
In 2005, they
celebrated their 54 th
wedding anniversary.
Staying in the
eastern U.S., Snidow
then became a field
representative with
the AHA. He covered
North Carolina to
Maine and started to
learn the history and
pedigrees of Hereford
cattle. “At that time, gas was 19 cents a
gallon and hotel room was $4.00 per
night,” Snidow says.
The Move to AHA Headquarters
It was his move to Kansas City,
which further broadened Snidow’s
horizon in the purebred livestock
business and especially that of registry
systems. He joined the AHA staff at the
headquarters in 1955 in charge of the
AHA office. “In
those days, we
had about 120
ladies working in
the registry
department,
compiling
pedigrees and
handling all the
paperwork
manually,” he
says. “Of course
– we weren’t in
the big computer
age, yet.”
Snidow’s
duties at AHA
meant overseeing
the mailroom,
bookkeeping,
accounting and
the pedigree
registry. “I inherited the role as pedigree
examiner.” And examine pedigrees he
did. Bud spent hours and hours
managing the pedigree system and in
the time frame of 1959-1962, he
examined pedigrees to make sure they
were clean of any dwarf carriers. Bud
examined as many as 52,000 pedigrees
in a year.
At one time, he also managed a field
staff of ten along with his other duties.
Snidow traveled to many of the major
shows, including the regional merit
events, Fort Worth Stock Show and
National Western Stock Show. In
addition, he traveled to many
international sites to promote the
Hereford registry and Hereford genetics.
During his tenure with AHA, Snidow
traveled to South America, Canada,
Japan, Spain, Austria, South Africa,
England, Ireland, Scotland and Mexico.
Bud Snidow helped to create the Hereford historical museum also found at the AHA
Headquarters. He also serves the role as association historian sharing many stories
from the past.
Bud Snidow shown with just one of the many paintings he painted
over the years. This painting of Prince Domino hangs in the AHA
headquarters, Kansas City, MO. Prince Domino was a very
prominent herdsire and many bloodlines in the Hereford breed
extend from him, such as the popular “Line One” cattle.
“One thing I remember in all these
countries is – not everyone could speak
English, but they were always first rate
people,” he says. Snidow also ushered
Minnesota’s GoPher the Purple Sale: 25 Years of Excellence
The Minnesota Hereford Breeders are
celebrating the 25 th Anniversary of the
GoPher the Purple Select State Sale. We
are excited about the quality of
Herefords that have been sold in the
GoPher Sale for the past 25 years. Over
the years many of the cattle sold in
GoPher sales have been progeny of
cattle sold in present sales. Some of
the consigners are members who have
consigned every year for the past 25
years. It takes a great deal of
commitment by the state members to
consistently manage and produce a
successful state sale over the years. It
has grown and improved each year to
the present Sale that we offer to our
customers.
The Sale started in 1981 and has
continued consecutively to the present
sale being held December 10, 2005, at
the McLeod County Fair Grounds in
Hutchinson, MN. The first sale in 1981
was held at the Granite City Livestock
Auction Barn in St Cloud. Our annual
banquet and meeting was also held at
that time, just as we do at the present
time. After a few years the sale site
was moved to Alexandria, MN to the
Soderholm Sale Barn. The banquet and
sale headquarters were at the Holiday
Inn in Alexandria. After outgrowing the
site in Alexandria we moved the sale to
the University of Minnesota St Paul
Campus Sale Arena. The UM Block and
Bridle Club were hired to get the facility
ready and help on sale day with the
cattle. The annual meeting was held on
the campus and the banquet was held
at various hotel sites in St Paul and for
a time at the Earl Brown Center. Several
years later the GoPher the Purple Sale
was moved to its present sight in
Hutchinson, MN.
The Minnesota Hereford Breeders are
looking forward to seeing you
December 9 and 10 th in Hutchinson to
help us celebrate 25 years of success.
The annual meeting will be held at 1:00
pm in the McLeod County Fair grounds
Sale Barn lunch room. The annual
banquet will be held the night of Dec.
9 th at the Sale Headquarters, Best
Western Victorian Inn, in Hutchinson.
The Social Hour will begin at 6:00 with
the banquet and banquet program
following at 7:00. The Minnesota Jr
Hereford Breeds will be conducting a
silent auction again this year before and
after the banquet. The proceeds from
the Silent Auction are used by the Jr to
fund various Jr Hereford activities and
cash incentives given at the Minnesota
State Fair 4-H show.
The Best Western Victorian Inn, 1-
800-369-0145, will have a block of
rooms set aside for Thursday and Friday
nights, December 9 & 10 th . There will
be rooms available at the Super 8, 1-
800-8000 and AmericInn Motel, 1-800-
634-3444 plus several other motels in
Hutchinson.
the end of his career at AHA the Beef
Life never did slow down for Snidow
once he retired from the AHA in 1983.
In fact, to this date he still is the
historical representative for the
association. He worked to build the
Hereford history museum in the current
AHA office at 1501 Wyandotte Avenue,
Kansas City, MO. “It was just too
important to lose what history we had
about the breed and the breeders,” he
says. So Snidow gathered many
newspaper and magazine clippings,
photos, trophies etc., which had been
stored during the last association office
move and he worked to put them on
display at the headquarters.
Letters to the Editors...
Dear Jill & Marc,
My good friend from Canada sent me
the enclosed pamphlets. I thought you
would like to read. My grandfather J.O.
Southard and Tom Sotham were good
friends. The 2 best bulls that Tom
Sotham had were “Corrector” and
“Improver.” My grandfather’s bull
Monarch had Corrector in him.
Hereford America,
Thought maybe you might like to
know what some Hereford people are
doing.
Ebe will be leaving Iraq in late
September or October. His older brother
was over there for a year and returned
a year ago last March.
We have an anthrax problem in this
area buat are vaccinating and keeping a
close watch on the cows.
Hope it drops off soon. Over 20
producers have been affected in a four
county area and have had several
confirmed cases so far this late summer.
Suppose this too shall pass.
Thanks for a great paper and good
support. Much appreciated.
Take care & God bless,
Merlin Fornes, ND
Merlin and Eunice sent us a very
interesting article on their son Ebe
Fornes and his experience in Iraq as a
driver of a Stryker (Armored Personnel
Carrier).
Accompanied by a gunner, Ebe drives
a nine-soldier squad on periodic patrols
“outside the wire” in the city of Mosul,
north of Baghdad.
Ebe mentioned that insurgent attacks
were usually more costly to the
insurgents than to our boys. Insurgent
tactics make Stryker mobility a real
powerhouse in Iraqi warfare. Insurgents
specialize in unconventional use of
weapons that creates more noise and
disruption than serious damage. “they’ll
fire a mortar from a car window, then
speed off,” he explains. “This is usually
wildly inaccurate. Also, they can’t fire
more than a couple rounds before army
patrols are on them.”
Ebe has a talent not thought of as a
high priority in a war zone but he stays
very busy during his free time reverting
to his role as the unofficial company
tailor. Being 6’ 4” Ebe learned to sew
his own clothing during his stint in E
Company, Seventh Cavalry, a
reenactment group “garrisoned” at Fort
Ransom back home. He took his sewing
skills with him to Iraq. In fact, his
sewing skills were so essential to his
brigade that the army shipped his sewing
machine over to Iraq for him. Ebe has
been in great demand to modify uniforms
to suit Iraq-style warfare. An example
is that when wearing normal Desert
Camouflage Uniforms and body armor
it is impossible to reach the front
pouches. Ebe studied the situation and
figured out a solution. He took off the
pouches hidden by body armour and
sewed them on the shoulders. He then
attached the unit patches displaced by
the new shoulder pouches back on using
Velcro.
Nothing like a little farm-boy
ingenuity!
Ebe’s parting words were this, “No
matter what the media says — and they
seem to bounce from bad to bad — our
mission is working. We’re making a big
difference in Iraq!”
Thanks Ebe for your service and
dedication to our great country.
Montana Hereford 2005 Convention is Huge Success
By Byron Bayers
The MT Hereford Assn. annual
convention was held at the Heritage Inn
in Great Falls, MT on Nov 5 th , 2005.
Dale Sand of Power was Convention
chairman and did an excellent job of
organizing the event. For the past several
years this convention has been held in
conjunction with the Montana
Stockgrowers convention in Billings.
This year the Directors voted to move
to Great Falls and hold a convention
independent of other groups. It is the
intention of the group to move to various
locations throughout the state for future
conventions. This gathering was a great
success with nearly one hundred people
attending.Very informative presentations
were made by Jack Ward and Stacy
Sanders of the American Hereford Assn.
staff from Kansas City. These two
fielded every question presented to them
in an honest and professional manner.
very informative presentation on her
company products that was well
attended.
A CHB fed banquet was very well
attended and the food was enjoyed by
all. Awards were presented to the
Darrell and Judy Mikelson of Hobson,
Hereford Person of the Year, Mike
Hereford Breeder of the Year, JayDe
Eggen of Plentywood. Auctions were
held to raise funding for the activities
of the MHA. The steer carcass award
winners for the MT Jr. Assn. were
awarded (listing on next page). Ken
Overcast from Chinook, MT provided
the entertainment for the evening. Ken
is a longtime cowboy, rancher but he is
also a humorist and western singer. For
over an hour Ken kept the crowd
laughing and entertained, but his last act
of the evening was one that only cattle
people could appreciate and the crowd
was almost rolling on the floor at Ken’s
presentation of The “Kamikaze Cow”.
This is Ken’s rendition of getting a mad
old cow in the barn that is calving, and
then trying to get her to accept a new
calf. Even though Ken does not say so,
this must have been an Angus cow! If
you ever need someone really great to
entertain your group give Ken a call.
This may be the only guy that is funnier
than Pete Atkins in S.D., with his Elvis
routine. Elected to the MHA Board of
Directors were Cory Dutton of Gold
Every once in awhile a great, great bull comes along and we feel it has happened
in 417P. After much thought we have decided as an attraction to our
60th year in business to offer an interest in 417P. One could write a book on his
heritage starting with his sire 212, selling for $54,000 and his dam just recently
topping the Cooper cow Sale at $36.000. Add into that Cooper’s 2nd high
selling cow was 8104, the paternal dam at $25,000. 417P himself was Cooper’s
top selling bull. 417P is chucked full of muscle, depth, spring of rib, pigment
and style to go along with his heritage. Not only all of this, but 417P set the
standard for both rib eye and IMF in the Cooper sale with a 119 REA ratio and
122 IMF ratio. What a bull to sell Feb. 11th. Baker, JBN and Mark Cooper will
each retain a 1/4 interest. 1/4 semen interest and semen sales sell along with a
bank of semen.
our 7046 bull that has left his mark wherever used. 218 can do it all from
phenomenal calving ease to rapid growth to 18 months with thickness
and style in his progeny. His unique -2.3 birth and +.31 rib eye are
exceptional. His calves had a 109 REA ratio and 101 IMF ratio. 218’s bull
10 Fun Facts About Churchill
1. All bulls are sold off the
ranch by private treaty.
We have a large group of
both horned and polled
bulls available.
2. 85% are the result of
AI or ET and it has been this way for 25 years.
Ultrasound testing started in 1992.
3. Our bulls are fed a high roughage diet and are
hard, sound and active.
4. Most of our bulls breed Hereford cows — our
customers want to keep a problem-free, efficient,
maternal cow herd and they use Churchill bulls to
get the job done.
5. We purchase calves from our customers and
annually feed out hundreds of cattle for the CHB
program. We hold an annual feeder calf sale in
January in conjunction with Headwaters Livestock.
6. We concentrate totally on Hereford cattle. We
study our lesson and do our homework so you
don’t have to.
7. This year several leading breeders called our
bred heifers “maybe the best group I’ve ever see”.
You can purchase the mates to them.
8. Our herd sire, 285M, is PROVEN to be an elite
carcass sire, yet is only 1.8 on birth with maternal
being his greatest strength.
9. Our program is based on stacking generations
of performance cattle, not bloodlines. We demand
calving ease, fast growth, efficient maternal traits,
and “best of breed” carcass.
10. We calve spring and fall. All of our fall born
bulls are available now, as is the oldest half of the
spring ‘05 calves. The younger half is kept
through the summer and offered as coming two’s.
more thickness throughout the sale
By B. Lynn Gordon
Many things have changed around
Blueberry Hill Farms, Norfolk, NE since
its beginning in the 1970’s but the focus
on the Hereford business is still the
mainstay.
Mike and Joyce Crowley and their
family initiated Blueberry Hill Farms,
located in the hills along the Elkhorn
River Valley in northeastern Nebraska.
In the early days, the Crowley family
was involved on a daily basis, doing
chores for both the cattle and horses
on the farm.
Growth in the 1980s
In the early 1980’s the Crowley’s
took the step to enter into the registered
Polled Hereford business which Mike
had been earlier associated with while
living in southern Nebraska. As a result
they added Doug Bolte as manager at
Blueberry Hill in 1982, a position he still
fulfills today.
By the time 1984 rolled around,
Blueberry Hill Farms had grown to 200
registered Hereford cows and a 1,300
head commercial cattle operation which
was located on a second ranch site near
Springview, NE.
“We select our registered herd based
on the same traits that worked for our
commercial herd,” says Doug Bolte.
This means a commercial cow herd
which relies on calving
ease, producing a
quality calf which will
grow and grade, plus
cattle that can be
handled and worked
safely and efficiently.
grading cattle. “At Blueberry Hill Farms,
we are constantly working towards
producing this type of animal,” Bolte
says. “This is what our customers want
as well.”
Value of Data
Keeping this goal in mind and now
incorporating the much more extensive
amount of information that is available
to cattle producers today has also
allowed Blueberry Hill to keep up with
their customer needs.
They collect birth, weaning and
yearling weights, along with scrotal,
pelvic, and ultrasound data on all
yearling bulls and heifers. Carcass data
is collected on steer mates when
possible. In addition to the information
already mentioned, they annually rank
the cow herd based on udder and body
condition scores.
“We believe the more complete data
you collect, the more accurate the
information will be and this will make
the end product more consistent,” Bolte
says. He further comments, our founder,
the late Mike Crowley, set the philosophy
we operate on today — set goals, keep
good records to meet those goals as
efficiently as possible and be ready to
adapt to change.
In 1989, another turn of events
occurred. The commercial cow herd
was put up for sale.
However, the registered
herd continued and then
was dispersed in 1990.
The land around the
ranch also went through a
change. “Who knew our
ideal location along
Highway 275, the gateway
to the northern Sandhills
country, would become a
Blueberry Hill purchased KJ 520E Investor 532M ET from Jensen Bros., Courtland,
KS. Investor went on to win three divisions at National Hereford shows and has
become a very valuable asset to the Blueberry Hill program. From left to right (Brady
four lane express way” Bolte explains.
The highway construction resulted in
changes to farm site access and even
eliminated a building site.
Today, the operation still consists of
85 females that are actual descendants
of 10 bred heifers which were retained
from the 1990 dispersal. The strong
genetics and customer trade continues
at Blueberry Hill. In 2001, the Nebraska
Polled Hereford Association (NPHA)
named them ‘Breeder of the Year’. “It
was very gratifying to be voted on by
your peers — especially since you have
worked alongside them and even
competed against your fellow breeders
for many years,” he notes.
At Blueberry Hill, marketing of
yearling bulls occurs as they join forces
with Frenzens’ Polled Herefords,
Fullerton, NE., as a guest consignor to
the annual bull sale. The sale is held the
fourth Tuesday of March and offers 60
Angus bulls and 40 Polled Hereford
bulls. The bulls are fed with the Frenzen
bulls and ultrasound data is collected and
made available to the customers.
Glynn Debter Inducted into Hereford Hall of Fame
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Glynn Debter, Horton, Ala., was inducted into
the Hereford Heritage Hall of Fame on Oct. 24 at the American Hereford
Association (AHA) Annual Meeting in Kansas City. For many years he has
had a dynamic influence on the direction and advancement of the Hereford
breed.
Debter is the third of five generations operating a family farm in north
central Alabama. The Debter farm has evolved from its sole cash crop of
cotton to a nationally recognized Hereford seedstock supplier.
“Since 1948 Glynn has committed himself and his sons to making the
purebred Hereford herd a priority and positioning it to meet the changing
needs of the industry,” says Craig Huffhines, AHA Executive Vice President.
Early on, the family was involved in the Beef Cattle Improvement
Association (BCIA) and Total Performance Records (TPR). Their search
for higher performing and more functional cattle led to the introduction of
Line Ones into their program in the early ’70s.
Artificial insemination was used to supplement their breeding program
and Glynn was one of the first to see the enormous potential of embryo
transfer. He was honored in 1990 as the BIF seedstock producer of the year.
The Debters have hosted annual production sales on the farm for 33
years. They consistently rank among the top five Hereford bull sales in the
U.S. in the 50-100-bull category.
Glynn has always made time to promote Herefords and the beef industry.
He served as director and vice-president of the AHA and was elected president
in 1987. During the merger of the AHA and the American Polled Hereford
Association (APHA), he was selected to serve a three-year term as chairman
of the merged board from 1995-1998.
The American Hereford Association in Kansas City, Mo., is the second
largest beef breed association in the United States, serving 13,000 junior and
adult members who register more than 71,000 head annually.

Thoughts From Your Fellow Breeders
By B. Lynn Gordon
Hereford America asked five Hereford
breeders during events in September and
October to share their thoughts on three
questions addressing technology,
marketing and the future of the cattle
business. Interviewed were:
Kirk Bieber, Bieber Herefords, Onida,
SD
David Kitchell, Dakitch Herefords,
Ada, MN
Ron and Allen Schutte, Schutte &
Sons Polled Herefords, Guide Rock, NE
Bryan Sidwell, Sidwell Herefords, Carr,
CO and Hawk Springs, WY
Dale Venhuizen, Churchill Cattle Co.,
Manhattan, MT
and this is what they had to say.
How has technology influenced the
management of your operation?
Bieber - Ultrasound is one of the
technologies we have incorporated into
our business plan at Bieber Herefords.
It is a great method to achieve the data
needed to market cattle and find out
your herd’s ribeye area and marbling.
Online registration has also been recently
used to register our herd with the
national office.
Kitchell – The three most common
types of technology we use at DaKitch
Herefords are electronic scales,
ultrasound
and EPDs.
Utilizing these
forms of
technology
has helped us
to develop
genetics with
less variation
from top to
bottom. We David Kitchell
also utilize the computer and internet.
Son Matthew has the computer skills
and has been designing brochures and
sale flyers to help promote our cattle.
We often make up a flyer to send out to
potential buyers ahead of time, so when
they get to the event they know about
our cattle already.
Sidwell – Computerization has
gradually been adopted into our
operation and we are using it to keep
our records. As computer programs for
livestock management become more
user-friendly we will adopt even more
uses and programs to help manage our
herd. We have also ultrasounded the bulls
“LITTLE JOE THE WRANGLER”
WR C8 WARRIOR 17L 309
If you want to sell bulls to make Black Baldy calves, you need to use
this kind and type of bull. Breeding interest available for natural service
during spring breeding season.
and heifers in
our operation
to track the
carcass
merits of our
genetics as
we strive to
produce
cattle with
less backfat
and a large
ribeye.
Bryan Sidwell
Schutte - A new technology we have
tested out at Schutte Polled Herefords
is the use of distillers grain as a feed for
our cattle. Distillers grain is a cheaper
feedstuff option which we can get
locally and it appears to get the calves
to eat better. Distillers grain is a byproduct
produced during the
conventional production of alcohol from
grain for fuel. Additional forms of
technology are the use of all the
performance information and EPDs.
With this added information we can
select cattle based on more parameters.
Venhuizen - We have utilized
ultrasound technology and it has really
assisted us in the marketing of our cattle.
We use it to determine backfat
measurements, ribeye area and marbling.
This information is then used for
individual
selection.
In our
herd, we
look for the
a b o v e
average
data results
to carry
back in our
herd. We
Dale Venhuizen
also have used the new technology of
‘Cidrs’ that helps us organize our ranch
management and calving season better.
Of course, the internet has also been
used to track information and market
our cattle.
The Schuttes — pictured are Allen and Norma; Nancy and
Ron Schutte.
What is a current marketing
strategy that you are using to sell
bulls/seedstock?
Bieber – One of our successes has
been showing our cattle and getting our
name out to breeders. By exhibiting
cattle at major shows such as the Denver
Stock Show
our genetics
are seen by
many who
couldn’t
travel to the
ranch to see
them and
they have the
opportunity
to compare Kirk Bieber
them with
other cattle on display in Denver. We
started exhibiting pen and carload cattle
in Denver in the 1970’s and then take
our bulls home and sell them in our
annual production sale. For 21 straight
years we had a champion ‘On the Hill’
or ‘In the Yards’ and this was great
exposure for us.
Kitchell - We are in the process of
developing a website that we can show
our customers more about our cow herd,
cattle for sale and the environment they
are raised in. There doesn’t seem to be
one total answer on how to market bulls
successfully, but we feel that a website
will help us to be an additional tool to
reach out to a new audience. We also
plan to make the website educational in
the case that city folk find the website
and want to learn more about agriculture
and the beef industry.
Sidwell – Our target audience has
been to sell Hereford bulls to be used
on black and black-baldy cows. There
are a large number of black hided cattle
in the country and the cross with a
Hereford makes an acceptable carcass.
Many of our customers have come back
because they like the British cattle
versus the Continental lines. We also sell
a good number of
bulls to the high
elevation country so
having genetics that
work in that setting is
important.
Schutte - We
have 20 different
information aspects
available on each of
the animals that we
sell, including carcass
data, (cont. on page 30)

and ultrasound data. Bull buyers attending our annual bull sale can utilize
this information to help with their decision making process. We have
found that the more information we can provide our customers the
more pleased they are. Schutte Polled Herefords has been in the business
for 50 years, so another quality we offer is reputation. Our customers
know our way of doing business, know our cattle and can trust that we
will be here to help them if they have any questions. Our name has been
known for so many years in the cattle business that it is one of our best
sellers.
Patrick Morgan of Burwell, NE exhibited the Champion Hereford/Polled Hereford
heifer at the Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Show in Omaha, October 2. The February
heifer, SR Ms Mark 4139, is a daughter of Remitall Online 122L and was bred by
Sellman Ranch, Crawford, NE.
Reserve Champion heifer was exhibited by Grady McMahon of Ayr, NE.
Venhuizen– We market 60-70 herd bulls private treaty and thus we
need to find what works and stick with it. We have a lot of repeat
customers and work to create new customers each year. We will buy
the calves back from our customers and assist them in getting back
data. This helps them know what they are purchasing and helps us
know what our production levels are as well. We have also utilized the
HerfNet website to list market cattle.
Based on the current marketplace, is there anything you are
doing or will be doing in your operation or marketing strategy
Bieber – The industry continues to move toward a carcass-oriented
product where feeder cattle will perform in the feedlot and produce a
very acceptable end product. We are involved with Ridgefield Premium
Hereford Beef, because we see the increased demand for Hereford cattle
and branded beef programs as a way to continue to market our genetics
in the future.
Kitchell – We have to look to the future and with two sons ages 18
and 21, Dakitch Herefords will carry on and plan to be ready for the
changes ahead. We will utilize electronic identification and the value that
if offers in traceback. We will aim to incorporate ideas and programs
that will make our cattle more marketable in the years ahead.
Schutte – At this time we aren’t planning to make any changes.
Guess as the saying goes – ‘if it isn’t broke don’t fix it.’ We will be
having our 34 th annual bull sale in early March selling 40 bulls and we
will rely on the performance data, our reputation and our cattle’s genetics
to have a successful event.
Sidwell – We as a breed and a breeder need to be open to change. We
need to be willing to try new things and strive to be the first to accomplish
such a task rather than not being in the lead. Programs like ‘Verified
Hereford’ appear to be a good way to get Hereford cattle in the forefront
of the marketplace.
Venhuizen – At Churchill Cattle Co., we would like to increase our
commercial cow-herd base. As the enthusiasm for Herefords grows,
and white-faced genetics are demanded in the marketplace our goal is
just to get Hereford genetics in the cattle. With this increased demand
we can get a premium from our commercial cattle and utilize our
registered herd to advance our genetics. The industry pays for genetics
and management and our challenge is to match the level of management
to the level of genetics we produce.
