to have appear
but we realize that
is our way of life,
we are born and
we die. In the last
Byron Bayers
issue we noted
the passing of James Steen of
Marfa, TX. This was especially
difficult for me because James
worked for us one summer when
he was a college student. I had
known James’ Dad, Jim Bob Steen
and his Mother, Katheryn
Bob was a Denver judge. The
Steens asked me if James could
You won’t regret
it. Attending two
Hereford tours in
brought to mind several thoughts
about our breed. Many breeders
have worked hard at improving our
breed, adapting animals to their
environment and needs. These
breeders have done it quietly,
purposefully and with no need of
publicity, just the satisfaction and a
sense of accomplishment as their
only reward. It is impossible to put
a value on the contributions of these
Nebraska Hereford Tour Goes to Central Part of State
by Val Simonson, NHA Sec.
The Nebraska Hereford Association
held it’s annual Hereford tour on
September 10 & 11, 2005 in central
Nebraska. Eighteen polled and horned
Hereford breeders showcased their
cattle in the annual tour, along with tour
stops at Heartland Heifer Development,
Nebraska Bull Service and North Platte
Feeders. The tour showcased Hereford
cattle but also provided guests with a
chance to view some new country and
learn about the history of the herds and
the area.
NEBRASKA — Helms Polled Herefords’ display. The second day started out
beautiful and with a great display.
The tour began in
Lexington,
Nebraska with
loading of the bus
and travel to Zero
Hereford Ranch at
Miller. There Dave
and Linda Smedra
and their family
provided breakfast,
visiting and a
chance to look at
the Zero Hereford
herd bulls and
females. Zero
Herefords had it’s
beginning in 1920
in Graham County
Kansas and has
since evolved into
the current
operation.
Following that
stop, everyone
proceeded to Holm
Ranch where Bob
September 2 nd and 3 rd
by Marc Hotchkiss
I departed Bison airport at 5:35
Thursday evening for Goodland, KS to
take in the 2005 Kansas Hereford
Association annual tour. Three hours
later I landed after a non-eventful flight
(the best kind), called up Finley Motors
and picked up my rental car. Heading
for the motel, I calculated I needed to
leave for the first stop by 5:15 am
(MDT) so I could be there by 8:30 am
Dear Marc,
Your statement in Hereford America
about needing more Hereford bulls with
carcass data is right on the money. Because
of our commitment to lower birth
weights, moderate framed cattle and
feedlot and carcass data, we have sold
out of yearling bulls this spring. We have
sold bulls into Kansas, Nebraska, South
Dakota and Utah. One new customer
was not even informed until two days prior to the meeting when called and notified
that I was to be a delegate because another delegate could not attend. This is
ridiculous in an age of communication!!
The Association has some other major problems as well. One that I hear about
constantly is the $100.00 activation fee which has basically eliminated most small
registered operations. Naturally that also in turn eliminates a lot of potential buyers
at sales of bigger operations. From where does such logic (?) come?
Further, while I believe in youth programs and the leadership skills developed,
probably 95% of them will never own cattle as adults unless they inherit the
family farm or need a tax write-off from another occupation. While the Association
seems to be concerned about emphasis on the commercial operators, registered
sales with five bulls and 100 females tell you otherwise.
While this Association does many good things, many breeders in this area of the
country are bothered by its lack of concern for them, integrity, and judgment and
feel helpless to correct it. Several Association policies and attitudes if used in a
Dear Hereford America:
Since my husband is on the Board of Directors of the
Kansas Polled Hereford Association, he is frequently
asked when our association is going to join with the
Kansas Hereford Association and work together as one
unit. If you looked at the ad from the Oleen Brothers on
page 19 of the March 2005 issue of Hereford America,
maybe you can understand why this may never happen.
I find it extremely offensive that the Oleens would attack
the polled breeders and suggest someone would be giving
up fertility, performance, milk and muscle by breeding
their cows to a polled bull.
The American Hereford Association, by conducting
extensive research, has published a report of the Top
200 Active Sire List. The list comprises several different
profit indexes, one of them being the Top 200 Baldy
Maternal Profit Index. This index is a maternally focused
index that has a production system based off of 1000
Hereford x Angus females with a progeny harvest
endpoint directed towards CHB. Furthermore, for bulls
to qualify for any of these lists, they must also be in the
top 50 th percentile or better for Birth Weight, Weaning
Weight, Yearling Weight and Milk for the entire breed.
There are actually a total of 210 sires included in the
Top 200 Baldy Maternal Profit Index and 106 of these
sires are polled. The fact is that out of the top 38
bulls, 30 are polled. The next report is the Top 200
Calving EZ Profit Index. This is a general purpose index
that focuses on identifying bulls that can be used on
heifers and then ultimately the calves will be marketed
through CHB. This list includes 203 sires with 105 of
them being polled. In this group, 22 out of the top 28
bulls are polled. The next report is the Top 200 Braham
Influence Profit Index. This report is similar to the Top
200 Baldy Maternal Profit Index only they used Braham
Influence females instead of Angus females. This list
includes 202 sires with 98 of them being polled. In this
group, 27 out of the top 44 bulls are polled. The final
report is the Top 200 Certified Hereford Beef Profit
Index. This is a terminal sire index that is built on a
production system where Hereford bulls sire calves for
the CHB market. The report included 213 sires of which
99 are polled. The final group
indicated 21 out of the top 30
bulls are polled.
Do the results of this report make
it sound as if you are going to be
sacrificing fertility, performance,
milk or muscle by breeding to a
polled bull? I would never, under
any circumstances, try to
convenience someone to not use
horned Hereford bulls in their
breeding program, and make
ludicrous accusations that their
program will suffer if they do.
The right thing to do is for all
cattlemen and cattlewomen to work
together for the betterment of the
breed, whether they prefer polled
or horned cattle.
Gets Back What He Has Given
By B. Lynn Gordon
Sit on a bale of straw and visit
with Mark Frederickson at just
one of the many events he
attends, like the Minnesota State Fair,
and you will soon learn he is one of the
true leaders in the industry. His
Father-son team, Nate and Mark Frederickson
recently judged the South Dakota Hereford Futurities
and Steer Special respectively. Nate now lives near
Spearfish, SD, has a small herd there and works for
Novartis.
knowledge outside of his own cattle
operation, Frederickson Hereford Farm,
Starbuck, Minn., comes from many
years of participation and giving of his
time and leadership to numerous
organizations.
“My parents taught me that you need
to give back more than you take,” says
Frederickson. Dad always said don’t be
the one sitting on the side complaining,
get active, learn and participate in how
the agricultural industry runs.
So Frederickson did just that. Active
in Minnesota Hereford Association, past
board member of the American Polled
Hereford Association, member of state
and local cattlemen’s associations not
to mention volunteering for numerous
committees and task forces— he has
gained far more by taking an active part
than he could have ever attained on his
own.
In March 2005, Frederickson was
inducted into the Minnesota Livestock
Breeders Hall of Fame (see April/May
Hereford America). The Minnesota
Livestock Breeders Association (MLBA)
was initiated to promote all facets of
livestock in the state of Minnesota,
including sheep, swine, dairy, beef and
horses. The organization acted as the
promotional sector/lobbyist, at the time,
for all these livestock sectors. However,
in time many of the livestock species
began to develop their own state
organizations and the MLBA continued
in the role of merging all the livestock
sectors together, to promote the
livestock industry as a whole. One of
their major activities is the
4-H Livestock Auction held
during the Minnesota State
Fair. MLBA has inducted
139 members since the Hall
of Fame began in 1934.
Mark and Mary Kay
Frederickson and their two
children, Nate and Sarah,
moved to their current farm
in 1974. Their herd of 125
Hereford cows consists of
numerous Benchmark Dams
and trait leading herd sires
in addition to a herd of 25
registered Angus. Mark’s
family started in the
Hereford business in the
1950s.
“I was very humbled to
receive the award, especially
when I think of the
academia, extension and
research specialists who have been
previously inducted in the Hall of Fame,
along with fellow livestock breeders,”
he says. Some of the previous inductees
who Frederickson has admired and
worked alongside of
include: the late
Leonard Wulf,
Morris; Jerry
Hawton, University of
Minnesota; Bob
Schafer, Mahnomen;
Lester Schafer,
Buffalo Lake and
Morris Grogan,
Marine on St. Croix.
And uniquely, in 2005,
Frederickson was inducted alongside his
University of Minnesota college judging
coach/mentor, Chuck Christians.
Kent Thiesse, Lake Crystal, Minn., has
known Frederickson since their 4-H
days, in the 1960s. Thiesse and a team
of cattle breeders initiated the award
nomination. “We nominated Mark
because he more than meets the criteria
to be awarded with the highest honor in
the Minnesota livestock industry,” says
Thiesse. Thiesse gathered quotes about
Frederickson from fellow livestock
breeders to include in the application.
One of the quotes reads, “People tend
to gravitate towards a true leader. They
want to associate with them. Mark
Frederickson is a true leader and people
look to him for direction.”
Participating in organizations and
offering leadership has become a never
ending educational system for this cattle
producer. “You are always a smarter
person when you come away from the
organization than when you started,”
says Frederickson.
“I’m not necessarily a
person that enjoys
leadership roles, but I
strongly believe that
everyone needs to get
involved,” he says. “When
everybody does a little,
no one person has to do
too much.”
He knows the time commitment that
it takes to be on the road, attending
meetings and participating in livestock
and agricultural organizations. However,
he also knows that if you stay home
too long, you tend to get too comfortable
in your own setting and become less
aware of the different views in the
industry.
Frederickson had many mentors over
the years, and was good at seeking out
mentors to help
teach him the
ropes. Mentors
such as his
father, Don, and
fellow Hereford
breeder Gerhard
Mitteness built a
solid foundation
for him to be
more than just a
cattle breeder —
but a cattle professional.
“I’m not necessarily a person that
enjoys leadership roles, but I strongly
believe that everyone needs to get
involved,” he says. “When everybody
does a little, no one person has to do
too much.”
As a leader in the industry,
Frederickson is aware of the challenges
along with the many opportunities that
are available. He cites pollution control
laws, constant industry and market
changes and safety of food supply as
“ People tend to gravitate
towards a true leader.
They want to associate
with them. Mark
Frederickson is a true
leader and people look to
him for direction.”
Kansas Hereford Association Tour... goers and thanked them for
(continued from page 1)
participating. Perry Nowak,
manager of Royal Beef Feed
update on GOP and the
impressive statistics that
have been recorded in their
yard on Herefords.
The annual Kansas
Hereford Assoc. Ranch
Rodeo took place after
supper. Being that I had
flown into Goodland, I had Grandson of Therean Towns, Frances with a newborn
to skip the rodeo and get calf.
ready for the next day’s tour.
(CDT). The only thing I didn’t calculate
was the 2 stops on Highway 24 due to
construction. Oh, well. I made C&M
Hereford Farms, Stockton, KS by 9:00.
C&M Hereford Farms of Stockton,
KS is owned by the Alton & Beth Hazen
family. Alton’s father, Clarence started
raising high quality Herefords over 50
years ago. Hazen’s also have a blackbaldy
replacement female program.
Sutor Hereford Farms of Zurich, KS
was the next stop on our tour. Darrell
and Joy Sutor welcomed the crowd and
explained their program. Their
granddaughter Dana Pieper, with her
husband David and children Cody and
Katie are also part of the operation. They
have recently introduced a polled bull,
some of the primary
challenges today. But he
also, sees opportunities in
producing new and
consumer friendly
products to expand
demand.
Those who know
Frederickson also know
that his personal nature has
made him a favorite among
the youth in the state. He
has always been an
SHF Napolean L75 from Sandhill
Farms, into their herd.
Towns Herefords, Therean & Mary
Towns, is located 3-1/4 miles south of
Palco. Therean purchased his first
Hereford from Sutors in 1948 as a 4H
project and subsequent herd sires from
many fellow breeders in Kansas. The
cow herd is currently Line One with
Quantock influence.
Towns’ daughter Santana and her
family is following in their footsteps
raising Herefords.
Lunch the first day was at Palco, KS
in the community center. Meals served
during this tour were fantastic! Tom
Granzow, KS secretary-manager,
mentioned that tour hosts were in charge
of the meals and had done a great job.
After lunch we traveled to
Jamison Herefords of Quinter,
KS. Gordon and his dad, Dale
welcomed visitors to their
ranch and display. Harmony
(continued from page 6)
Herefords, Delbert Swihart
Sarah Frederickson showing a champion at the
exceptionally strong advocate of the junior beef programs and 4-H and
championed these causes for a number of years. His son, Nate and daughter
Sarah were active in the Minnesota 4-H program and Minnesota Junior Polled
Hereford Association.
Nate is now an animal health specialist for Novartis. Nate and his wife Jayna
reside near Spearfish, S.D. Sarah is currently doing an internship for Farmers
Union in Washington, D.C., and is working on her master’s degree at the
University of Minnesota in Policy and Administration.
Mary Kay is also a champion of youth and is an elementary school teacher in
Starbuck. Mary Kay’s roots stem from a commercial cattle family in DeGraff,
Minn., area.
Mark’s neighbor and fellow cattleman, Leonard Wulf, used to say “Think
about your industry first; your breed second and yourself third and it will all
work out. If you do this, there will be a place for your industry, your breed and
yourself.” Mark keeps this statement in mind as he volunteers his time to the
livestock industry and carries on his role as one of today’s top leaders.
Saturday’s schedule began at
Ochsner Herefords of St. Francis.
Gilbert and Shirley welcomed the tour
group. Gilbert explained their breeding
program were mostly Canadian
genetics.
Mills Ranch of St. Francis was the
next stop. Mark Mills mentioned that
their ranch has participated in 76
consecutive Denver Stock Shows over
four generations and have sold the most
cattle in one week while at the show,
101 head in 1947.
Next stop was Douthit Herefords,
just a few miles down the road. Walter,
Steve and Roger Douthit have put
together a herd with a nice mixture of
mainly Canadian and L1 genetics.
Lunch for the second day was served,
another fine meal.
Some of C&M’s cow-calf pairs.
Darell Sutor and his
granddaughter Dana Pieper
Barry and Sally Priest recently returned
to farming life after 30 years being in
retail sales. They have put together a
very nice quality herd and have a right
to be proud of the progress they have
made in such a short time.
I departed Goodland, Kansas for
Huron, SD, wheels up, at 5:30 pm. Two
hours and 5 minutes later I landed in
Huron with 99° showing on the
thermometer and the SD State Fair just
starting. Setting there on the tarmac
thinking about my time in Kansas, I
decided I had thoroughly enjoyed my
Genetic Outreach Program…. Still Relevant
The Genetic Outreach Program will
once again be offered to Hereford
breeders nationwide by the Kansas
Hereford Association. In today’s fast
paced and quality driven beef industry,
GOP continues to be very relevant. It
gives breeders and commercial
producers the opportunity to test various
sire groups and compare the feedlot and
carcass data amongst contemporaries
from other herds in a blind test. The
cattle are fed at the same time and at
the same location in order to eliminate
some of the variability. Many producers
are opting to feed a few from each of
their sire groups and cattle of varying
quality in order to find what program
fits their management scheme the best.
Some significant changes have been
implemented by the Kansas Hereford
Association in the year since GOP came
under their management. If a producer
has twenty head or more, they can have
a pen of their own and not have to
commingle their cattle with other
producers. This makes the feed
efficiency data very relevant to these
producers. Also for the producers with
enough cattle to fill a pen, dates for
starting cattle can be modified to fit the
producers feeding strategies. These
cattle will also be compared to
contemporaries if other producers can
be found to start cattle at the same time.
If other contemporaries can’t be
arranged to start feeding at the same
time, the producer will still receive full
carcass and performance data on his
cattle, but will not be compared to cattle
fed at different times during the year.
This change was made to offer GOP to
producers nationwide who have varying
management practices, but still want to
find out what their cattle do in a feeding
environment.
Marketing strategies have also
changed in the past year. Royal Beef in
Scott City Kansas, where the test is held,
is very innovative in offering the latest
marketing options to their customers.
This past year, the cattle that qualified
for CHB received .50/cwt over the top
price when they were marketed.
Ultrasound technology was also used
to better isolate the best carcass cattle,
thus giving them the option to market
on the open market or various grids that
are available to many white faced cattle,
ANNUAL
BULL SALE:
February 10, 2006
and to market the steers
in a timely fashion
according to their
individual body type. The
cattle ended up going to
who ever offered the
most money at the time
of slaughter. In the
upcoming feeding period,
Royal Beef will be
offering significant
premiums for cattle that
can be source and age
verified. This is just
another way in which the GOP cattle
are being marketed to make the most
money possible and get that extra
premium back to the producer.
Data compiled by participants in the
GOP is very quickly proving the
competence of Hereford, Hereford cross
and Hereford sired cattle in today’s beef
industry. The cattle fed to date have
gained at or above the Kansas yard
averages and done so on less feed and a
significant cost of gain advantage. The
ADG has averaged 3.64 (3.27 – 4.02),
Feed Conversion on a dry matter basis
averaged 4.83 (3.8 – 5.6), and Cost of
Gain, including all costs, not just feed
averaged .42 (.37 - .48). During this
time the Kansas average cost of gain
was near .54, the ADG was 3.46, and
the feed conversion on a dry matter basis
was 6.4. These are the kind of numbers
that have made the Hereford breed what
it is, the most efficient. This data, taken
from the real world, keep the Hereford
breed relevant in today’s beef industry.
The cost of feed is 60% of the cost of
raising cattle. Hereford producers
involved in GOP can take this data and
feeding results home and make sound
breeding decisions that will help them
and their customers produce the type
of fertile, efficient cattle that will work
both now and in the future of the beef
industry.
The Genetic Outreach Program will
have December and February starting
dates once again this coming winter and
spring for anyone wanting to feed five
or more head. Cost will be the same as
in the past, $50 per consignor and $5
per head. Ultrasound and carcass data
will be charged at the feedlot since that
is the most economical option. These
minimal costs are more than offset by
the knowledge gained and the
comparative analysis provided to the
producer. Other starting dates can be
arranged for producers with varying
calving dates and management
practices. The KHA will work with any
Benjamin Franklin Nash, 87, died Aug. 1, 2005
in Canon City, CO.
He was born Jan. 13, 1918 to Walter Combs
Mr. Nash graduated from Canon City High
In 1942 he was sent to Guadalcanal and helped
was then transferred to the Allied Intelligence
Service and became the first and only American
Coast Watcher who worked in the bush. This
service was done on the Soloman Islands and
New Guinea where he spent up to 26 months
behind enemy lines. He was awarded the Legion
of Merit, two Presidential Citations, the King
George Medal from Britain, a personal letter of
the South Pacific Combat Ribbon with two battle
stars for his service in the Coast Watchers. He
individuals and the animals they have
“engineered.” The best reward we can give
them is to look at their cattle, compliment
them on their efforts and see if they would
work in our program.
A thankless job shared by many of our State
Hereford Associations’ Secretary/Managers
is that of Tour Guide. They spend a lot of
time preparing for a tour, getting breeders lined
up, routes figured, timing estimated, motels
reserved, meals catered and other countless
last-minute issues. I saw two of these people
in action lately, veteran Tom Granzow of the
Kansas Hereford Association and the new
manager of the Nebraska Hereford
Association, Val Simonson. These two did a
great job and are to be commended on the
job they did. They deserve it. Thanks people!
Recently Stan Dickman of Harker’s
Distributing of Lemars, IA, came out with
his son Joe to our ranch to pick up a horse
Warren G. Brown
Warren G. Brown, a long time Polled Hereford breeder
passed away Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005. He was 87. He died
at the Hartford Health Care Center as a result of complications
from pneumonia and heart congestion.
Warren and his wife, Isabel, owned the 100-year-old
W. W. Brown Nursery, which was started in 1901 in the
Village of Hartland by Brown’s father, Walter William
Brown. Brown was among the hundreds of thousands of
American men and women - dubbed “The Greatest Generation”
by author Tom Brokaw - who fought in and survived
World War II and returned home to become business
and community leaders.
He was also a nationally renowned breeder of prizewinning
Polled Hereford cattle and Shropshire sheep.
He was president of the Wisconsin Polled Hereford
Association, secretary of the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders,
a member of the Wisconsin Livestock Breeders board
and a member of the Waukesha County Farm Bureau. In
addition, he served as a trustee on the village boards of
both Hartland and Merton during his life. He also served
a four-year term on the statewide advisory board that
assisted in the development of regional community colleges
such as Waukesha County Technical College. He
was also an active 4-H leader and instructor. He was a
past president of the Hartland Lions Club and former
commander of the Flanagan Dorn American Legion Post
always enjoyed visiting with him. Harker’s uses
Certified Hereford Beef as their premier beef product.
He related a story about a new customer who didn’t
feel like the product they received was the same as
what had been represented to them. The salesman
asked the customer if they had tried the new shipment.
“No, but it doesn’t have sufficient marbling.” The
salesman went to the customer, they grilled a steak,
ate it and had no more complaints. It goes to show
that with Hereford meat the “proof is in the eating”.
During one of the tours I had a couple people ask
me if we were supporting Montie Soules for the AHA
board. The first time I was asked it caught me offguard.
To set the record straight Montie got his resume
to us in time for the September issue. There are other
resumes in this issue.
I’m writing this as I’m traveling to the D-Bar
dispersion in Texas. Dan Grahman has been a good
supporter of our paper and we’d like to return the
favor and wish him and Rosalie the best.
This time I left the Mooney in the hangar and went
as a passenger on United Airlines. It’s kind of nice to
not be in the left seat all the time but believe me, I am
in the left seat every chance I get!
Till next time,
Six Vie for Three AHA Board Positions
The American Hereford Association will
be electing three new board members (Oct.
24) to replace retiring directors Bruce Orvis,
California; Wes Hudson, Arkansas, who
served the remaining year of his father’s
term; and John Loewen, Oklahoma.
The AHA nominating committee announced
the following slate of candidates:
Paul “Butch” Funk, Texas
Wes Hudson, Arkansas
Bill King, New Mexico
Bob Kube, Virginia
Paul Slayton, Pennsylvania
Montie Soules, Oklahoma
Editor’s Note: Hereford America requested
information from all of the candidates.
Montie Soules sent his in unsolicited
and it ran in last month’s issue in its
entirety. The remainder will run in this issue.
Hereford America is not endorsing
any specific candidates.
Paul E. “Butch” Funk,
Copperas Cove, Texas, Lieutenant
General (U.S. Army, Retired) and Sheila
“Danny” Funk own and work the
Spearhead Ranch, Copperas Cove, Texas.
In addition to his ranch chores Paul works
as Associate Director of the Education and
Technology Applications Division at The
University of Texas at Austin (UT),
Institute for Advanced Technology, and
is a member of the Army Science Board.
Sale Headquarters: Sandhills Convention Center, North Platte, NE — (308) 532-9090
LTG (R) Paul
E. Funk, was
born in
Roundup,
Montana and
holds a
Doctorate of
Education from
Montana State
University. As a high school student he
worked for a number of years on the ES
Bar Ranch in northern Musselshell,
Montana where he raised a small herd of
registered and commercial Hereford cattle
with Domino and Zato Heir breeding being
the prominent strain. Before beginning his
studies at Montana State University Paul,
like many other young people, sold his
cattle. While at Montana State University
he earned a degree in Animal Science (Pre-
Veterinary). As a member of the school’s
judging team Paul visited the Miles City
Experiment Station gaining an appreciation
for the excellent Line One Herefords
whose derivation made him a believer in
performance oriented cattle.
In the past ten years Paul and Danny
have focused on performance
characteristics of both horned and polled
Hereford genetics. Paul developed a herd
of approximately 70 head of brood cows,
and several bulls, focusing first on
genetics, then EPDs followed by solid
phenotype. To date his best flush cow is
by the great Cooper 759 bull (DeShazer’s
bought a flush with her as dam, too). His
cow herd is largely based upon genetics
developed by the late Frank Felton,
Missouri, crossing well with Star Lake
bulls such as 29F, Remitall bulls like Online
and Spearhead Ranch’s Feltons Kirk 953
(National Reference Sire Program).
His other careers are based upon a fair
amount of service and the privilege of leading
young men and women of the US Army.
General Funk held a variety of command
positions, from platoon through division,
leading to his assignment as the Commanding
General, III Corps, and Fort Hood, Texas,
considered the world’s most powerful
formation. The assignment came with a budget
of $1 Billion, with a $2 Billion payroll, and
contract base to match the 162,000 soldiers
assigned to Fort Hood. He served as the
Commanding General of the U.S. Army Armor
Center and Fort Knox, Kentucky, from June
1992 to October 1993. He commanded the
Third Armored Division, United States Army,
Europe, from December 1990 to April 1991,
when the Division distinguished itself as part
of the VII Corps, during Operation Desert
Shield and Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia,
Kuwait and Iraq. He was the Commanding
General of the National Training Center and
Fort Irwin, Fort Irwin, California; Assistant
Division Commander, 9 th Infantry Division
(Motorized), Fort Lewis, Washington;
Commander of the 194 th Separate Armored
Brigade; and 5 th Battalion, 33 rd Armor, Fort
Knox, Kentucky.
General Funk served a combat tour in
Vietnam as Executive Officer and then
Commander of Troop A, 1 st Squadron, 9 th
Cavalry, 1 st Cavalry Division. He commanded
whereupon he joined UT.
Butch and his wife Danny have three
children: COL Paul E. Funk II, James Funk,
and Becky Clonts. The Funks are proud
grandparents to eight grandchildren.
Simply put, for most of his adult life Paul
Funk was given the privilege of serving in
leadership positions requiring a fair amount of
management skill, and an ability to manage
budgets, and produce profits. Each job required
the building of teams, sometimes under life
threatening conditions, composed of our very
best of people from a diverse set of
backgrounds. His philosophy as a leader is to
be in the people business, and let everything
else flow from there.
Robert Kube, Warrenton,
Virginia, was born in Washington D.C.
At the age of 12,
his family moved
to a 200-acre farm
in Fauquier Co.,
approximately 40
miles from D.C. His
family started with
Hereford cattle
and continues to
raise them today.
Currently Kube has 300-plus acres,
including grazing, hay and woodlands.
The cow herd consists of more than 50
cows plus replacement heifers and calves.
Kube sells cattle mainly in two Virginia
sales, the bull development program and
by private treaty. The family does all the
labor from cutting hay to vaccinating
calves.
Kube attended Virginia Tech and
graduated with a degree in animal science.
The summer of his junior year he worked
for CMR Ranch, Senatobia, Miss. He
earned a master’s degree from Penn State
University in agriculture economics.
After serving in the Army for two years,
he returned to the farm. He farmed while
working in the banking industry. A few
years later he started a general contracting
business building houses and apartments.
This evolved into real estate appraising,
which he continues today.
Kube is president of the Northern
Virginia 4-H Center, which represents 18
counties and one city for summer camp.
Kube is also the Fauquier County Farm
Bureau president, Warrenton Methodist
the same
operation since
1978. Today Star Lake consistsof 250
registered Herefords and more than 200
ET calves born each year. Soules is
responsible for Star Lake’s more than
million dollar budget with cattle sales that
exceed this figure. There are five full-time
employees on the ranch and through the
years four to seven families have relied on
the ranch for their living.
Star Lake has hosted 26 consecutive
spring sales and 18 fall sales. Most years
the ranch shows at four nationals. The
ranch has shown numerous national
champions including Denver carload and
pen show champions. Soules has judged
numerous shows including the 2004
National Western Hereford Show and the
National Canadian Hereford Show. Soules
has traveled to South America for 11
years, marketing genetics and consulting
with Hereford breeders.
Growing up, Soules was a member of
the Michigan Junior Hereford Association
and attended Michigan State University.
He has served on the Michigan Polled
Hereford board and he’s a past president
of the New York Polled Hereford
Association. Soules was on the committee
that merged the Oklahoma polled and
horned associations. He then served as
the first president of the newly merged
Oklahoma Hereford Association.
Soules was elected president of the AHA
President’s Council and presided over the
first open presidents meeting. He was a
member of the AHA task force in 1997 that
redefined the goals for the AHA after the
merger. He also served on the 2005 AHA
A fine young man is gone way before
his time and we will all miss his presence.
James was 49 years old.
After I had returned from a cattle trip
to Idaho I recovered a message on my
phone that George Schlickau of Haven,
KS had passed away. George fought a
tough battle these past few years with
his health. George was from a Hereford
family that is now starting into their 2 nd
hundred years in the business. George
and I were on the AHA board at the same
time and we were good friends and spent
a lot of time together for several years.
George was a fine man and loved his
Herefords. We became close to Lois,
George’s wife, too, and she was as
active or maybe more so in agriculture
as George. It is hard to imagine the
Hereford business without George being
involved. Time goes by and there are
not many left from that Board of
Directors. Those were the times when
the AHA had a lot of money in the bank.
I will remember the good times, George.
His family will carry on in the business.
I was interested to read Tom Krauss’
advertisement in the Kansas Hereford
publication last month. He brings out
some good points on why our EPDs
don’t always tell the whole story. I think
that generally all the EPD tells us is the
trend of the performance of the animal.
The segments that can really bite you
though are the birth weight and milk and
carcass. If the animal is young these
can change so fast you wonder what
happened. When a bull is bred to a lot
of cows the birthweight EPD’s become
much more accurate so I always use
caution with a young bull. This year in
the industry we have seen a popular bull
that was used on many cows, have a
jump in his birth EPD of nearly 5# and
this really shocked a lot of people. The
higher percentage of accuracy list
means less chance for shock. The
ultrasound for carcass data comes later
in an animal’s life (one year or so) and
that data can really change from the
parental data or in the case of little
previous data. Now milk seems to be
another matter. How many of you have
ever seen a lower milk EPD change
much, no matter what the calf weans
off at weaning time. Milk will come
down pretty easily but very seldom will
it go up much or any. Tom relates this
in his article/ad. I keep asking for a good
answer to this and so far I haven’t had
one. The other day I talked to a breeder
at ring side, these animals are usually
the more growthy and healthy types in
the herd. In this day of crossbreeding
and rainbow cattle it is a little hard to
understand commercially. In genetics,
in any species, any breed, any line, you
can probably find some kind of a
genetic problem in the background.
Don’t get smug with whatever you are
raising, just be aware that nothing is
perfect! That is just the way that it is in
this world.
By the time that you read this column
I will have covered the Holden, Cooper,
Split Butte and Mohican sales and then
on to NILE in Billings. Marc and Jill have
the North Dakota tour, LaGrand sale and
we go on from there into a busy fall
sale season. I hope to visit with many
of you readers at these events. So long.
directions for us, with Marc going
on the Kansas Hereford Tour and me
heading to the Minnesota State Fair.
We did actually meet up at the South
Dakota State Fair for a few days.
I had not been to the Minnesota
State Fair in a couple of years so it
was good to “go Back East” and see
our Hereford friends out there. It was
about 600 miles one way and the
beginning of the first big gas price
hike so that was an expensive trip. I
started out paying $3.15 per gallon and
October 2005 HEREFORD AMERICA • 35
(continued from page 33)
it ranged from about $2.80 to $3.18
across SD and into MN. Most of the
time it was $3.00-3.15. I haven’t lived
in or driven through a big city by myself
for a number of years so the trek
into St. Paul, where the State Fair is held,
was nerve-wracking to say the least. I
guess it really wasn’t all that bad as I
somehow managed not to take any
wrong turns and went right to the fairgrounds
without incident. John Schmidt
• Nebraska •
recommends traveling through the city
at about 3:00 in the morning to beat the
traffic. I guess that would do it especially
if you’re pulling a trailer. Maybe
he’s just looking for a little extra help on
show morning!
As usual the Hereford show at that
state fair was the largest beef breeds
show as was the Hereford show at the
South Dakota State Fair. I think the quality
in Minnesota this year was the best
