Byron Bayers
The spring
Hereford sales in
Montana started
with a big bang.
Fort Keogh in
Miles City, started
with the best sale
they have
Byron Bayers
had in several
years and the momentum continued
to grow with each sale.
We saw breeders from all over
the nation, and Canada, attend these
sales and most of them bought
cattle. New investors in the cattle
business bought high priced cattle
and it is always good to see new
interest in our Hereford industry.
Even though the prices were
substantial, many commercial
herds purchased bulls. We
As we wind up
our last issue of the
spring and I look
back on our busy
year it really
amazes me all the
things that have
Jill Hotchkiss transpired within
the Hereford industry.
The best thing I see going on in
this year is breeders finally standing
up for themselves and taking action
to shape their own future. I guess
desperate times call for desperate
measures. But why has it taken
such a long time for breeders to
finally stand up for themselves? I
guess some of you probably “aren’t
there” yet but the time has come
to start promoting your own
business and the Hereford breed.
In the last few months we have had
Feed Efficiency, Meat Quality, Docile
Temperament, All In a Whiteface Package
By Tom Krauss, Chairman & Tom Granzow, Manager
of the National Hereford Feedout
The Hereford breed has long been known for being fertile,
efficient, and easier to handle than the other breeds, but data
gathered over the past several years backs this up
conclusively, and also shows that the Hereford breed excels
in meat quality, too. More and more, the industry is waking
up to realize that this great breed of cattle does indeed have
what it takes to be a vibrant part of the beef industry and is
Cox Chosen as New CHB Chairman
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Fellow board members elected Bill Cox, Pomeroy,
Wash., as the 2007 Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) LLC president. Cox has
served on the CHB LLC and American Hereford
Association (AHA) boards since 2004, and will now
focus primarily on issues related to marketing the
CHB ® brand.
As a passionate Hereford breeder, Cox is especially
excited to help advance a brand that creates demand
for Hereford genetics. More than 37.9 million lb. of
CHB were sold in fiscal year 2006, creating a pull
demand for 465,261 head of commercial Hereford
cattle.
Cox says that selling even more product in
upcoming years will require growing the CHB LLC
marketing team. This process has already begun with
(continued on page 22)
Bill Cox
poised to improve the beef cattle herd as a whole in the
United States and around the world. Efficiency is the
buzzword, and the Hereford breed has compiled the
firepower in data to prove that we are the most efficient
breed in the industry. The other breeds are going to come at
us with all they have, but we have one thing they will not be
able to show. Efficiency is inherent to Herefords, and we
prove it every day.
In data collected through the Genetic Outreach Program
and more recently the National Hereford
Feedout, the Hereford breed shines
through in gain, efficiency of gain and
in meat quality. The GOP was started
in 1994 by the AHA and has been
administered every year since then,
currently being managed by the Kansas
Hereford Association and the AHA. With
over twelve years of data collected on
over 7,000 steers, the results show that
Herefords had an
average daily gain of
10% better than the
Kansas yard
averages of the time
frame, converted
dry matter feed at a
9.2% better average
and also had a more
than 9% overall
advantage in cost of
gain. What is more
interesting is that
over the time of the
test, the Herefords
actually have
improved against the
averages in all of
these categories.
We have indeed
made significant
progress through the
diligent breeding
practices of
Hereford breeders.
These cattle were
efficient way before
You probably don’t remember me,
refreshing and on the mark. The
Hereford industry really has so much
to offer to the cattle industry, from good
doing cattle with the best dispositions
anywhere, to cattle that can really get
out and perform under the harshest
conditions, year in and year out. Keep
up the good work and don’t worry
Jill:
I just read your editorial and pulled
out my copy of the 1961 Hereford
Journal -July herd bull edition. Mary
Anne Steinle’s painting appears on the
front cover of that edition. According
to the notes within, Steinle’s painting
was actually based upon a drawing by
the famous livestock illustrator from
pre-camera days — N.A. Throop. I
have to wonder if Throop’s original
drawing still exists.
Thumbing through that same 1961
edition, I came upon a piece entitled
“Hereford Business” written by an
unknown Hereford Journal staff writer.
Considering your comments regarding
the “bread and butter” commercial
base, you might like to read the full text
some time. Here’s a couple of
segments:
“There is no disposition to deny for
a moment the significance and
importance of sale-topping and showwinning
performance. But the real
steak-and-potatoes end of the Hereford
business is something else. . . . The
largest segment of the registered
Hereford industry, and one that is
absolutely vital, comprises the
thousands of breeders whose principal
business is the production and sale of
good bulls for use in the good
commercial beef herds in every part of
the country. Without volume activity in
this field, all the rest would soon begin
to wither. It is, in fact, the lifeblood of
the broad, general registered Hereford
activity.”
“There is nothing wrong with having
a hobby, if that is what a man wants.
Some men breed horses simply because
they like horses, so why should not a
man raise cattle on the same basis if
what he mainly wants is to find
recreation and pleasure in the
undertaking? If a $20,000 bull
occasionally changes hands on such
basis, who is to say that it is wrong? If
men of similar inclination find zest in
the interchange of breeding stock and
dollars, who is there to say that this is
not the best of all avocations? And it
does happen that some men go forward
from such beginnings to become
serious breeders and solid contributors
to breed progress. But such operations
as initially concieved do not constitute
the beef cattle business. Rather, the
beef cattle business, as a business,
involves the annual production of a
great many thousands of bulls good
enough to improve the average quality
and conformation of the purebred and
commercial herds they serve. It
involves the production of hundreds of
thousands of Whiteface feeder calves
with built-in efficiency and
performance. It involves the feeding
and finishing of those hundreds of
thousands of calves which ultimately
provide the bulk of the choice beef
Dear Jill,
We agree! It is time every one of us
who have stayed with the Hereford
through the years stand up and be
counted. What other breed has as nice
a disposition to work with along with a
top notch fertility rate?
We have a modest sized herd of commercial
Herefords and are starting to
build a small bunch of registered Herefords.
Only during the breeding season
are the registered Herefords separated
into a different pasture and isolated
from the commercial Herefords but
even then there is no special feed or
conditions. All our cows are expected
to perform equally well as to calving
percentage, calving ease, re-breeding
rate, feed conversion efficiency and
disposition.
In the fall at weaning time, we sell
the culls, be it due to age, cripples, poor
udders, etc., whether they are commercial
or registered. These cows, after
raising a calf, are thin because they
have been putting a lot into that calf so
they average around 1,050 to 1,200 lbs.
and they’ve raised that calf on grazing
grass with only salt and some mineral
to supplement. We’ve never frame
scored our cattle but guess that they
must be at least a 5 on the average.
This winter, because of the drought,
all of our pastures are bare with no
grazing available anywhere so every
bite those cows eat is being fed to them
and we know exactly what it has taken
to winter them. They are in good shape
to calve, have a strong calf and nurse it.
This has all been done on less than 20
pounds of hay and one pound of Loomix
per head per day.
This drought again pinpoints the
Hereford superiority in all areas. With
that kind of efficiency, who needs to
use black or any other color to crossbreed?
Certainly not us plus those Herefords
definitely are a lot nicer to work
with than any other breed!
We do not believe we are the only Hereford
people who can say this so come
on, stand up and speak out!
Is Hereford the next
Shorthorn breed?
As you read that title, you may
wonder what is really meant by that.
As I explain what I am getting at, I hope
not to offend anyone, but to make you
think what direction I hope to see the
Hereford breed heading.
The past several issues of Hereford
America has had several editorials that
have breeders taking a stance on issues.
i.e., Jill Hotchkiss talked about the
breed being at a crossroads, Barclay
Kreth wrote about the Herefords
registrations and A.I. use and price as
it relates to the Angus breed. Ed Hawks
voiced his opinion when it came to
Herefords and carcass data. All those
people were right, but where does it
put us going forward?
Now I don’t claim to know much
when it comes to the Shorthorn breed,
but I know what I see. Years ago, they
seemed to have their place in the cattle
industry. Cattle that milked well and
were used in a crossbreeding program.
Where are they today? I am not saying
they can’t do now what they did then,
it’s just that if you do see a breeder
using Shorthorn genetics, it’s almost
certain they have something to do with
club calves and the showring, not their
profit potential in the cattle industry.
What does that have to do with
Herefords? Why is it every time I pick
up a copy of our national breed
publication, the emphasis seems to be
what show just got over, which one is
next, and isn’t it great Herefords had
the largest amount of entries out of all
the breeds at the show? The Angus
breed along with sponsors can put up
over $30,000 for their national carcass
contest, but we the Herefords sit back
and do little.
I hate to think that the financial
efforts of the American Hereford
Association (AHA) through both
premiums and labor, are best spent
through the showring to forward the
breed. Now don’t all of you show folks
string me up just yet. I do believe the
show circuit has it’s place and can serve
it’s purpose of marketing and
showcasing superior genetics of the
breed, I just don’t believe it is where
tomorrows cattle industry is going to
take us.
I don’t believe AHA is wrong for
having the shows. It’s where the past
leadership directed part of its efforts. I
do believe AHA’s efforts to move the
breed ahead through the commercial
sector are vastly understaffed, under
manned, and underfinanced. It would
be interesting to know of all the monies
collected through registrations, what
percentage gets paid out through
premiums and staff time at those events
directly relating to the shows. We seem
to blame the Angus “people” for every
thing the Herefords didn’t do right. You
don’t have to look far to see they have
their A game going on, and the ball
rolling.
If you ask any of the cattle producers
in your area how their cattle do in the
feedlot and on the rail, the majority of
them tell you that they perform quite
well, but really have no clue as to how
they really do. I posed the question
during the state presidents meeting in
Kansas City last fall. With the
technology coming about in the cattle
business today through age and source
verification, tracing and tracking and
other integration ideas being put in
place, wouldn’t the Hereford breed be
on the fast track if they were able to
help commercial cattlemen place their
cattle with buyers that would allow
them to get feedlot and carcass data
back on those cattle?
If you would like to at least get some
sort of an idea, how your cattle are
performing, place a few head of steers
in the National Hereford Feedout. All
information is kept confidential, so you
don’t have to feel like you will be put
up against others and judged. The
A four year old produced at Anchor Herefords that now weighs in at
2680 meat pounds, has been added to our herd bull battery of eight,
that is among the best in Montana. 50N has some of the good Hereford
cattle in North America in his pedigree. Come by some day and see the
Ed Hawks expressed his opinion on
the need for carcass quality in
Herefords. He’s right, the Hereford
breed was not built on grade and yield,
but we can’t ignore carcass traits if we
expect this breed to compete in the
future. Along with looking forward we
need to check behind us occasionally
to see what got us where we are today.
Don’t forget it was done with fertility,
longevity, and the best feed
conversions of all.
When it comes to forwarding the
their sale from Saturday, February 24 th
to Thursday, March 8 th due to a fast
moving blizzard with lots of wind and
snow creating treacherous travel
conditions. The move was a good one.
The weather was great and the cattle
were relaxed and enjoying the springlike
temperatures.
Byron’s Editorial...
(continued from page 1)
congratulate Fort Keogh, Holden
Herefords, and Cooper Herefords for
setting the pace in the north country
for the spring sale season. (Note the
sales results in the following pages.)
The weather was warm but the
winds for the Holden sale were terribly
strong, reported 70 miles per hour in
some areas. Not good weather for
people wanting to fly.
At Montana Hereford Assn.
President Dale Sands’ place, the wind
was so strong that at 4:00 in the
morning, the wind blew down the fence
around his yearling bulls and as he
woke up the bulls were coming by his
bedroom window on their way to check
out the ranch. He was nearly late
getting to the Holden sale, as he had to
get bulls separated from other cattle,
fix the fence, then feed the cattle, but
he made it. Dale said, “This has been a
tough morning!”
Jim Williams of the AHA did a very
nice gesture at the Cooper sale when
during his pre-sale talk, he gave the
senior member of the firm an industry
thank you for all he had done for the
program and for the industry. The sale
crowd gave Jack a standing ovation and
thank you, and the 90+ patriarch was
obviously touched. Good job on that
one Jim!
I want to thank Dr. Dan Moser of
Kansas State University for correcting
a statement in my last article that was
in error. Dr. Dan says that the figures
that were published in the National
Pedigree Livestock Council, for
Charolais, is really the total number of
females on inventory, and not the actual
numbered registered. He believes the
total amount registered is more in the
40,000 per year area. Thanks Dan for
correcting me, and it sure makes me
feel better knowing we are at least
second. I apologize to you readers for
my mistake, we hate to make them but
I sure did, as Dan pointed out.
I noted in a recent press release that
John Andras of Big Timber, MT has
gone to work for a Texas cattle
publication. John is an outstanding
young man, who was active in the
Junior American Hereford Assn. group
and just recently finished his college
education. John is the son of Deb and
J.C. Andras, both long-time Hereford
folks from Big Timber. Deb is now
Editor of the Western Livestock
Reporter. I wish John well and I just
wait for the time when we can add him
and more of our well trained Juniors
to our staff at the AHA. Too many of
our outstanding Juniors through the
years have gone on to other jobs, not
in the Hereford industry. Sure we get
some but not enough to make me feel
good.
While attending the “big” Montana
sales last week I had the opportunity
to visit with Bill Cox of Pomeroy, WA,
who is the newly elected President of
the Certified Hereford Beef program.
We had a very nice discussion about
the program and the effects that CHB
has on our whole breed and breeders.
Bill assured me that very positive
things are on the horizon. We are all
waiting anxiously for this to occur and
we wish you well Bill, in this endeavor.
It was 70 degrees in Montana March
17th and it appears that spring is around
the corner. It has been an unusual
winter here. We have had cold, then
snow, then wind, then melt, then the
same thing over, but nothing severe like
other parts of the country.
So long for now. — BB

Harrell Hereford Ranch is one of the
West’s most respected seedstock
leaders. Driven by the economics of the
commercial beef industry, their
reputation has been built upon a wellrecognized
cowherd, trait-balanced
cattle, and proven high accuracy
genetics. Headlining High Desert,
Mountain country bred cattle, the
Harrell purebred program is backed by
their Oregon Country beef commercial
cowherd that has proven the genetics
from cowherd to carcass.
Bob Harrell, Jr. and the Harrell
family represented their 28th Annual
Production Sale at the ranch
headquarters in Baker City, Oregon.
The event was part of a big ranchercattlemen’s
weekend that included the
Harrell MacKenzie Quarter Horse sale,
Thomas Angus Ranch bull sale and
special “Cattlemen’s Gathering” that
announced the Beef Northwest Harrell-
Thomas “Northwest Premium Genetic
Partnership,” a new value added
marketing program for the principle’s
customers.
The Harrell 2007 offering was
comprised of a volume selection of
powerful bulls, first class registered
and commercial replacement heifers
and the outstanding Harrell-
MacKenzie Quarter Horses. A capacity,
seven-state crowd of ranchers, breeders
and horsemen competed to invest in the
quality, performance, and proven
genetics that have become a trademark
of these programs. A very successful
sale stands as a statement for the
reputation of the Harrell and
MacKenzie familes and the good cattle
and horses they breed.
Book Review by Byron and Pauline Bayers
Every one should read
THE UNCERTAINTIES OF LIFE
By Arnold Hokanson
The book, “The Uncertainties of
Life”, is written strictly as a work of
fiction. (Hokanson was raised in the
Bear Paw Mountains of Montana and
those mountains are the setting for this
story) But an incident did occur during
World War II, where a German spy,
with his inseparable briefcase, did
manipulate his way onto a cattle train,
at Havre, MT. The spy proceeded to
ride the train, with the ranchers, as far
as Fargo, ND.
During the era of World War II,
ranchers still ran what was commonly
known as “big steers”. Yearlings, two
year olds, and in some cases three year
old steers even, were run on various
ranches throughout Montana.
Upon arrival of autumn, ranchers
would trail their “shippin bunches” to
the railroad, and ship them to the
eastern markets of St. Paul, Chicago,
or Sioux City, Iowa.
Most ranchers sold their cattle once
per year, and consequently, the
shipping herds included dry cows,
heifers not kept for replacement, and
usually a bull or two.
Trains that were referred to as cattle
or stock trains, usually contained a
number of other cars, bearing different
kinds of freight. When the number of
cattle cars, and men accompanying
their cattle was sufficient, an old,
specially equipped coach in which part
of the seats had usually been removed,
would be provided for the comfort of
those traveling with their cattle. Such
was the case of the train upon which
the German spy traveled.
The author, in later years, came to
know quite well two of the men who
rode the train with the spy. They told
how in the beginning, the ranchers
were ignorant of the fact that the man
sold to Lord Ranches of Boise, ID for
$3,000.
Angus Bulls:
Lot 234, Shaw New Day 6687, a
02/14/06 son of Boyd New Day 8005
sold to TFI Limited of Boise, ID for
$7,000.
Lot 243, Shaw 9074 Bando 6602, a
01/10/06 son of LT 598 Bando 9074
sold to TFI Limited of Boise,ID for
$6,000.
Lot 204, Shaw 9074 Bando 5211, a
08/25/05 son of LT 598 Bando 9074
sold to Jenkins Ranch of OR for
$3,500.
Red Angus Yearling Bulls:
Four bulls, Lots 301, 302, 303 &
305 each sold for $2,750.
who traveled with them was an enemy
spy. (By golly this is not all fiction!)
The book tells of the intrigue that
follows as the ranchers learned who
this strange man among them really
was and then how they dealt with him.
While the hero is patterned after no
one in particular, he is a combination
of many men we have known through
the years. Some rough and rugged but
very dedicated. Combine those
qualities with those of the more
serious, and kind natured, and those
who are dedicated to commitment and
seeing things through, and show a
concern for the world around them.
This is the character the author
attempted to create.
Also emphasized is the effects of
war and the hardships placed upon a
society by war, and the changes in
lifestyle involved and their after
effects. Even, how those who question
the intelligence of war, at times, are
committed to do battle on their own to
uphold their convictions.
This is a story of life, the good times,
and the bad. It shows how people
commit themselves to helping one
another when necessary, and of the
integrity of an undying friendship. A
story based upon an incident that could
happen to anyone, and should bring to
mind the question, How would I react
to such a circumstance?
(A very good and interesting book
that is very readable and once you start
into it, it is very hard to put down. It
clearly depicts western family life of
that era. The book describes life as it
really is! Pauline Bayers)
This book is available from author
is also available from Barnes and
UW ag student named to
All-USA academic third team
By Robert Waggener
University of Wyoming
University of
Wyoming agriculture
student Stacia Berry
today was named to USA
Today’s 2007 All-USA
College Academic Third
Team.
Berry was among 60
students from four-year
colleges nationwide
making the top three
teams, which consist of
20 students each. There
were nearly 600
nominees. Coverage is
in this morning’s edition
of USA Today. Go to
www.usatoday.com, and
scroll to All-USA
College All-Stars on the right side of
the page.
“Being named to the Third Team is
a stellar accomplishment,” said Tracey
Wong Briggs, All-USA Academic Team
coordinator.
“The program was founded 18 years
ago to honor outstanding students.
These are students who excel in a
variety of ways academically and who
extend their knowledge beyond the
classroom,” she said.
Aura Newlin, a 2002 UW music
graduate from Riverton, made the First
Team in 2003, and another UW
graduate from Riverton, Kara Calvert
(business administration), made the
Second Team in 2001.
Berry, a junior from Cheyenne, is
majoring in animal and veterinary
sciences in the College of Agriculture,
with options in agricultural
communications and business. She was
nominated for the national honor by her
adviser, Professor Doug Hixon, head
of the Department of Animal Science.
“Stacia is an outstanding student and
an extremely accomplished young
lady,” Hixon wrote in his two-page
letter to USA Today. “She has provided
leadership at every level of
participation in which she has been
involved. The amazing thing is that she
continues to excel academically with
all of the many time commitments
outside of the classroom.”
Berry has a near-perfect grade-point
average through 79 credit hours.
“I received a B in political science
my first semester at UW,” Berry said
and smiled. “I think of that B
sometimes, but I try to think of it in a
positive light.”
Asked to explain that, Berry
Stacia Berry pictured in front of the University of Wyoming’s
Animal Science Building.
responded, “There is some value to
imperfection; I believe it offers the real
side of a student. Being able to balance
academics with extracurricular
activities sometimes will earn you a B
or lower in a class.”
Accomplishments in the classroom
– and beyond – are the key components
to the All-USA College Academic
Team judging, Wong Briggs said.
“Students must write essays on their
most outstanding intellectual
endeavors and also how they use their
talents beyond the classroom,” she
noted.
Berry’s essay focused on her year
spent as national FFA secretary in
2004. She and the other national
officers withdrew from college that
year to help educate middle and high
school students around the country
about personal growth, leadership and
career success.
Berry estimates she presented more
than 100 workshops and delivered 90
motivational speeches across the
United States that year. She helped
organize a national FFA convention,
wrote a curriculum for FFA leadership
workshops and helped train 150 state
FFA officers in leadership,
communication, recruitment and
agricultural issues.
“There was one common
denominator no matter where I went –
the value of agriculture and what it
does for absolutely everyone,” Berry
said.
“We were allowed two to three days
each month at home; the rest of the time
we were on the road,” Berry said. “It
demanded a huge level of
responsibility and personal
A Hereford Celebration
2007 Junior National Hereford Expo
What is the Hereford Celebration
of 2007?
The Hereford Celebration ‘07 is the national
show of the National Junior Hereford Association.
The “Western Hereford Breeders” have
been slected to host this great event during
the week of July 7-14, 2007 at the National
Western Complex in Denver, CO. During this
week, hundreds of Hereford youth and their
families will converge on the city of Denver to
exhibit not only 1,200 head of cattle, but also
to compete in numerous leadership and personal
development events. More than 3,000
spectators will be in attendance throughout the
week making this event one of the largest of
its kind in the United States.
The “Western States Junior and Senior
Hereford Breeders” are working together to
ensure a successful event for all in attendance.
However, your financial support is needed to
make this event a highlight for the families who
will be traveling to Denver to take part in this
event. There are several ways you can support
this event and make an impact on the lives
of many young agriculturally-minded youth.
Feed Efficiency, Meat Quality, Docile Temperament, All In a Whiteface Package
(continued from page 1)
$4.00 corn and $100 grass hay. It
proves that efficiency goes hand in
hand with Herefords, so lets take it to
the industry now. The facts are in.
In meat quality these cattle have also
shown to do quite well. Ribeye area
has steadily improved along with the
marbling scores. Yield grades have
consistently been exactly what the
industry wants with an overall average
of 3.15. This shows that the genetic
trends in the Hereford breed are right
on target with industry needs. In recent
studies conducted by independent
entities, preliminary results that were
reported on at Kansas State
University’s Cattlemen’s day showed
Pairs at Rausch Herefords, Hoven, SD.
Starting with the 2000 fall test, coventional IMF scores are used
Pre-2000, standard packing marbling scores are used
Marbling 200-249 slight
Score 250-299 slight
300-399 small
400-499 modest
500-599 moderate
600-699 slightly abundant
that Hereford cattle have more DNA
markers for tenderness than any other
breed. These preliminary studies also
show that Hereford beef eats as good
and is as tender and juicy at the Select
grade as other breeds are at Choice.
These studies seem to show what the
Hereford breed learned in the Colorado
State trials that were run in the early
90’s that started Certified Hereford
Beef. We already knew that Hereford
beef is as good as any of them, even at
the Select grade! Less fat with just as
good of an eating quality should be
touted as a healthier product for the
consuming public.
Recently, Iowa State University
released the results of a study on
temperament and how it affects the
final product of the beef industry and
how this relates to profit. Their results
showed that more docile cattle are
worth as much as $62 per head more
when compared to less docile cattle.
That is significant. They also showed
pictures of Hereford cattle when
publishing the results of the study. It
is certainly well known that Herefords
are the most docile and easy to handle
cattle in the industry.
Furthermore, the U.S. Meat Animal
Research Centers recent Germplasm
Evaluation Progress Report No. 22
adds even more proof to the Hereford’s
claim as the leader in feed efficiency.
Six harvest points were evaluated for
performance per unit of feed energy
consumed comparing Hereford, Angus,
Red Angus, Gelbvieh, Limousin,
Charolais and Simmental genetics
against each other. In 4 of the 6 harvest
points (fed for 187 days as calf feds,
fed for 550 lbs. gain, fed to a backfat
endpoint of .43 inches, and a fed to a
fat trim endpoint of 24.8%) Herefords
were the most feed efficient for all the
breeds tested. When fed to a marbling
endpoint of Small 35, Herefords came
in third behind Angus and Red Angus
and were substantially more efficient
than the Continentals. Finally, when
fed to a retail product endpoint of 456
lbs. of red meat yield, Herefords came
in 4 th , but easily outperformed Angus
and Red Angus genetics as well as
outpacing the Gelbviehs.
The data revealed in this article,
collected over time, should be the
selling point in today’s modern beef
industry as to why Hereford genetics
is the smart way to go when making
selections to improve the beef cattle of
today. These trends enhance the
position of Herefords and add to the
time honored and many times proven
range efficiency and fertility of the
Hereford sired female that we all know
about and has been proven time and
time again. No longer do we have to
take a back seat to the black hided
cowherd of today. Instead, we need to
promote the fact that we have
something to offer that will improve
what they have done.
These studies and trials are being
backed up every day by studies being
conducted in the U.S. and around the
world, but here are results that can be
used now to show the industry what
we have and how it can benefit the beef
industry both now and in the
foreseeable future, before it is too late.
All Kansas Yard Average data was compiled by Kansas State University from the following feedlots
Brookover Ranch Feedyard, Decatur County Feedyard, DM&M Feedyard, Supreme Cattle Feeders, Hy Plains Feedyard,
Kearney County Feedyard Inc., & Pokey Feeders Inc, Pokey Feeders & Hy Plains Feedyard (continued on page 22)

Jill’s Editorial...
(continued from page 1)
some terrific letters, comments and
conversations with a number of you.
Market conditions, amplified by
drought conditions in a large portion
of the U.S., have many of you
reflecting on your business and taking
the bull by the horns. I’m glad to see
this happening at last. There are some
interesting developments by breeders
to help them retain and secure what
often seems like a rapidly dwindling
market share.
It is exciting to see new, innovative
ideas being implemented by breeders
across the country. It all seems to come
back to marketing alternatives. Anyone
who is in business selling a product or
service occasionally has to “readjust
the gunsites” and assess what their
customer wants in order to continue to
sell their product. How many times do
you hear “new and improved” in
advertisements? Fast food places are a
good example. There isn’t a year that
goes by for the fast food giants that they
don’t have some new or improved
product.
While I was in Oregon for Harrell’s
sale they announced a partnership
program with Thomas Angus whereby
they work with Oregon’s largest feedlot
operator to offer formula pricing and
premiums to both the Thomas and
Harrell customers. Wow, what a great
marketing alternative for their
customers. I’m sure it is also a fantastic
opportunity for Beef Northwest
Feeders with whom they’ve made this
arrangement. It will be interesting to
see what this does for both of their
production sales.
I realize there are a number of other
breeders out there with similar
programs and I applaud you for making
the effort and taking the initiative to
do these sorts of things. In most cases,
it’s a real win-win situation for all
involved.
Be sure you read the articles on our
front page this month. Finally, solid
data on the efficiency and beef quality
of Hereford cattle is being promoted.
Many thanks to Tom Granzow and Tom
Krauss, Hereford breeders from
Kansas who also are the manager and
chairman, respectively, of the National
Hereford Feedout, who took the time
to compile the information and write
this article. It’s been a long time coming
but the time is here. Anyone is welcome
to reprint the article as long as you give
the appropriate recognition. Just send
me an e-mail and I will forward the
information to you. This sort of
information really needs to get into the
mainstream ag press and we are all
hopeful it will. As Hereford breeders,
use this information to help promote.
Last, I hope you will pay attention
to Keith Carmichael’s ad on the
meeting he is having at his ranch
located north of Faith, SD, on May 3rd.
This get-together is all about marketing
alternatives for Hereford and Herefordcross
cattle. Keith is hoping to gather
a wide variety of people from all
segments of the industry for a panel
discussion and open forum of questions
and ideas. The plan is to line up
feeders, commercial cattlemen,
registered breeders, AHA and CHB
staff and board members, beef industry
and others to be there on the panel and
in the crowd. Sounds like there will be
some terrific discussions and
exchanges of ideas. Be there!
We hope to see you all somewhere
this summer. Thanks for a great year.
— Jill
These results show that Hereford sired cattle had quite
favorable combinations of markers for tenderness.
the hiring of an additional account manager in November 2006 and a food
service director in January 2007. Currently, Cox is working with other board
and staff members to identify the best individual to lead CHB LLC in the
absence of Rob Ames, 10-year executive vice president, who resigned this
winter.
In conversations with CHB retail and food service customers, Cox has
been informed that CHB is appreciated by customers because of its
consistency — a quality eating experience time after time. Cox says, “What
CHB brings to the supermarket and restaurant is the same thing we (Hereford
breeders) bring to commercial cattlemen — a consistent, efficient, easy-tohandle
product.”
Cox and his wife, Terrilie, own and operate CX Ranch near Pomeroy.
They raise registered Herefords and some commercial cattle, and also grow
wheat and barley.
Cox is a director and past president of the Oregon, Washington, Northern
Idaho Hereford Association. He also served as president of the Lewiston
Hereford Association for four years. In addition, he is a member of the
Washington Cattlemen’s Association and the Garfield and Columbia County
Cattlemen’s associations, as well as a charter member of the Pomeroy FFA
Alumni Association and a member and past warden of St. Peter’s Episcopal
Church.
The Coxs have three grown children — Andria, Josh and Piper — who
were raised on the farm and active in 4-H, FFA and junior Hereford activities.
CHB LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the AHA. Its threefold mission
is: to provide consumers with consistently tender, juicy and flavorful beef
products; to enhance the marketing opportunities of food industry distributors,
retailers and restauranteurs; and to increase the demand for commercial
Hereford-influenced cattle.
