It certainly 

has been a summer 

of highs 

and lows for us. 

but one thing is 

for sure, nothing 

is the same

as it was when 

we finished our last issue in April. 

After 8 years of drought in this 

area we finally started to get moisture. 

It started with 18 inches of 

snow in a rare May snowstorm 

and was quickly followed by some 

much-needed rain. From May 1st to 

July 1st we received about 20 inches 

of rain. Keep in mind our normal 

average rainfall for an entire year, 

not taking the drought years into 

account, is about 14 inches of rain. 

Since July we have continued to 

get rain and the ranch here in South 

Dakota probably hasn’t looked better 

at least since Marc’s family has 

lived here. It’s been a wonderful 

summer for the livestock as well as 

the people! 

Just 100 miles north of us into 

North Dakota it is very dry this 

year and we’ve seen parts of eastern 

Montana and Canada that are really 

dry. As well, lots of Californians 

have really struggled with heat, 

drought and fires while some eastern 

areas have had too much rain. 

I guess our vast country is always 

that way during the summer. You 

just wish it would even out but it 

sure keeps you humble after going 

through drought. 

While we’ve enjoyed a slower 

pace and a break from constant 

deadlines this summer we’re now 

back into it and ready to go. 

As we were starting work for this 

issue we got a call on August 4th 

from my brother saying that Dad 

had a stroke that morning. He is 

fortunate it wasn’t a severe stroke

They — Hereford Juniors — come 

from many states all over the nation to 

merge at what they say is “my favorite 

event” — the annual Junior National 

Hereford Expo. Held this summer, July 

12-19 th in Kansas City, Mo., the northern 

plains was well represented both in 

number of juniors in attendance, cattle 

and of course friends and families there 

to support the juniors as well. 

I spent some time visiting with the 

youngsters who are the next generation 

of the Hereford breed and who all 

clearly emphasized how much fun they 

have each summer seeing their friends, 

competing in this national competition 

and showing their favorite breed of 

cattle — Herefords. This is what they 

had to say! 

Jessica Middleswarth, 

Torrington, WY 

— 12-years-old — 

She is only 12-years-old but has 

been to six junior nationals and shown 

cattle at four of them, young Jessica 

Middleswarth claims. Middleswarth 

travelled along with her family when 

her older sister Ashley was competing 

at the national level and her excitement 

to start showing began to grow at this 

time. So now she is a well seasoned 

competitor and as a result she competes 

in the judging contest, speech, quiz bowl 

and of course shows her cattle. “I like 

speech — as it’s just like telling people 

about some topic I am knowledgeable 

about or interested in, but I’m making it 

into a speech,” she says. Middleswarth 

hopes that her parents let her continue to

Herefords Find New Home in Kazakhstan

Francis, KS. The cattle were purchased by Dinara Ranch in Kazakhstan.

participate as she would miss this event 

greatly, as well as the fun socializing 

with juniors from many other states. 

“I have met friends through my older 

sister and also through the competitions 

and stalling assignments from year to 

year,” she says. She has also attended 

the Pride Conference, AJHA’s leadership 

program, and hopes to someday be on 

the junior board of directors. 

Back in Wyoming, Middleswarth 

plans to start competing in rodeos and 

she also plays basketball, volleyball 

and track. 

She is the daughter of Jay and Marsha 

Middleswarth. 


The first of several

made to Kazakhstan, 

a former 

Soviet republic 

located south of 

Russia, in early 

June. 

Dinara Ranch, 

a 700-head Hereford 

ranch in 

Kazakhstan was 

the final destination 

of the shipment. 

The ranch 

is located in the 

southeastern part 

of the country. 

They hope to improve 

their breeding 

stock with 

these American 

shipments.

to attend this year’s meeting. 

This meeting kicks off the activities 

of the American Hereford Association 

during the American 

Royal, beginning at 8:00 a.m. on 

Saturday, November 1, 2008. 

Attending this year’s Council 

meeting is of extreme importance 

in light of increased pressures 

in the Beef Industry and numerous 

challenges, both old and new, 

which face each and every Hereford 

breeder, says Moon. Last 

year’s meeting was well attended 

and very productive. Moon 

strongly encourages each State 

and Regional Association to send 

representatives to participate at 

the 2008 Council meeting. There 

are two added bonuses for the 

2008 meeting. It will be combined 

with the Annual Breeders Forum, 

featuring Tom Field of Colorado 

State University, who will address 

topics vital to all members 

and breeders. In addition a panel 

of breeders and beef specialists 

will offer advice and information 

on marketing and other areas of 

concern to the Hereford Industry. 

They will also take questions from 

all who attend the meeting.

but he does have some after affects. 

His speech and right hand were slightly 

affected but with speech therapy and 

physical therapy his prognosis is good. 

Thanks to all of you who have already 

sent your good wishes. Those of you 

wishing to contact him may do so via 

e-mail, a card or phone call (preferably 

in the evening). Keep in mind, he sounds 

good and is able to do a lot of things but 

he’s still on the mend. We let him off the 

hook this month for an editorial so I’d 

imagine he will have all kinds of things 

for the October issue! 

Earlier in the summer we found out 

that Dad would be the recipient of one 

of the Canadian Hereford Ambassador 

awards. This was really a nice surprise. 

We originally planned a family trip there 

but Dad wasn’t up to the trip since it was 

just two weeks after his stroke, so Marc 

and I made a quick trip to Medicine Hat, 

Alberta. We were only able to attend one 

day of their Hereford Week events but it 

was very enjoyable and the cattle shows 

were excellent. 

We were truly honored and humbled to 

receive the Ambassador award for Dad. 

The Canadian Hereford Ambassador 

award is presented to a person, family or 

business that is a non-Canadian resident 

and has made a major contribution to 

the promotion of Canadian Hereford 

genetics. 

Thank you to all the Canadian Hereford 

breeders who had a part in selecting 

him for this prestigious award. It is truly 

a great honor for our entire family. 

At the Canadian Bonanza one thing 

they do differently with their junior 

show than the Americans is no adults 

are allowed to help the juniors with their 

animals. This is strictly enforced. I think 

they allow help for the younger children 

but from what I understand the help is 

from older kids. It’s an interesting concept 

and you know that the kids have 

by and large done their own work. Isn’t 

that one of the things a junior program is 

about? I commend them for this. I know 

the policy isn’t popular with everyone 

and certainly wouldn’t be here in the 

States but really what is the point of the 

kids having a show project if they don’t 

work on it themselves? I guess it is different 

for different families. 

Both the U.S. and Canadian Junior 

National Shows are tremendous events 

for all involved. There are a few juniors 

who go to the other country’s show and I 

know they get a lot out of it. We weren’t 

able to attend the Junior National in 

Canada this summer but Lynn Gordon 

covered it for us and you’ll see her coverage 

in this issue. We visited with the 

two American juniors who made the trip 

to the Canadian Bonanza Show. Cody 

Wood from Nebraska and Morgan Firestine 

from Pennsylvania both represented 

the U.S. and did quite well.

Jaime Hanson, Comfrey, MN 


Jaime Hanson, is one of the older 

participants at the 2008 Junior National 

Expo but she has only participated at this 

level for three years. This is not because 

of her lack of enthusiasm, but it was just 

six years ago that her family started in 

the Hereford business. After Hanson 

and her sister, Jody were given the op- 

portunity by their 

parents to pick what 

breed of cattle they 

wanted to own, they 

chose Herefords. 

The Hansons became 

friends with 

the Kyle Kuelbs’ 

family, another 

Minnesota Hereford 

family, during 

the Minnesota State 

Fair. As a result of 

learning about the 

breed and meeting 

others involved in 

it, the Hanson girls 

picked Herefords 

hands down and 

now own 22 head 

of cattle. Hanson 

believes Herefords 

have the opportunity 

to be competitive 

in the industry 

because of their 

ability to convert 

feed and be feed efficiency 

leaders. 

In Kansas City, 

Hanson showed 

three head, an 

owned heifer, and 

a bred-and-owned 

cow-calf pair. “It is 

fun to meet people 

from all over the 

nation, and both the 

junior and senior 

board members are 

so helpful,” she 

says. When college 

time rolls around, 

Hanson plans to 

study business and 

wildlife biology.

and Jeri Hanson.

their skills in the show ring, but they also 

have to independently fit their animal in 

a time allotment of 30 minutes. Due to 

the number of competitors, those who 

make it into the top ten have to win their 

way into the finals after several class 

heats, so it becomes a long day for them. 

The competition started at noon and the 

senior winners were named at 10 p.m. 

that evening. 

“I didn’t expect to make it to the 

finals, but each year I always want to

their friends as well,” she says. Ihry also 

competed in the Junior National when 

it was hosted by Wisconsin, three years 

ago. As the only North Dakota exhibitor, 

she carried the flag in the opening 

ceremony, but the lack of representation 

from her state didn’t dampen her spirits 

of enjoying the event to the fullest. She 

hopes to keep attending Junior Nationals 

and looks forward to the day that she and 

her sister Grace both are showing. 

“I think Herefords

Paul Atkins did 

not let his summer 

job and plans 

to head off to college 

in the fall 

prevent him from 

attending another 

Junior National. 

Atkins brought 

three head, a 

cow/calf pair and 

yearling heifer, 

to Kansas City. 

He has shown 

at the past four 

junior nationals, 

starting out when 

the show was in 

his back yard at 

Sioux Falls, SD. 

“This show 

brings together 

kids from all over 

the country and it 

is such a fun and 

interesting event 

to participate in,” 

he says. Atkins 

describes the fun 

of meeting new 

friends, but also

Wow, what a week in Kansas City 

for Nebraskan, Grady McMahon. After 

many years competing in the showmanship 

competitions, this year, he made 

the finals in senior showmanship, an 

honor that many of the juniors dream 

about. And when the results were all 

tallied, McMahon, placed fourth overall. 

Contestants in senior showmanship at 

this level, not only have to demonstrate 

do well, so this was great,” McMahon 

says. He describes the importance of 

staying calm in the ring, to focus on the 

animal and make sure the judges know 

that you can calmly set up your animal. 

McMahon was aware that the judges in 

the senior division also grew up showing 

and fitting cattle and thus he said he 

felt comfortable during the competition 

knowing the judges had a similar background 

to him. 

McMahon has only missed two junior 

with her Uncle Cody Crum, McComb, 

Ill., and her grandparents. Ihry’s cousin 

Crum has participated in several junior 

nationals and now at 18-years-old, he is 

nearing the end of his junior showing career. 

Therefore, Ihry was glad to be able 

to attend one more junior show with her 

cousin. Ihry worked alongside Crum in 

preparing her bred-and-owned cow/calf 

pair and heifer for the competition. 

“I have so much fun at this event, 

I always make new friends, see old 

the opportunity to promote his family’s 

cattle and make new connections to 

market their cattle. 

Atkins not only has interest in Hereford 

cattle but he will be a freshman this 

fall at Luther College, Decorah, IA. He 

will double major in music and biology 

with hopes to go into the medical field. 

The hard work and dedication that comes 

along with showing cattle, he believes 

will be a great experience and prepare

him for the strenuous schedule and work 

that comes with being a medical doctor. 

In addition, since second grade Atkins 

has been a member of a boy’s choir. He 

has competed at the state, regional and 

national levels in choir and also plays 

guitar and piano. Luther College will 

allow him to continue to participate in 

choir and possibly tour nationally and 

internationally. 

He is the son of Pete and Laura Atkins.

A year ago, Ernst and his family were 

hosting this national junior event in 

Denver, CO, so this year in Kansas City, 

there has been more opportunity for 

them to relax and enjoy the event. “Our 

family was very busy during the show 

last year helping with the organization 

and hosting duties,” he says. In fact, 

each day during the 2007 show, one of 

Ernst’s jobs was to deliver feed and hay 

supplies to the exhibitor stalls. 

But in 2008, Ernst brought three head 

of cattle and enjoyed the chance to spend 

more time with his family and friends at 

this year’s event. In addition to showing, 

he competed in the judging contest. 

Many of the new friends that he makes 

during the week are because everyone 

is so people friendly he recalls. 

He started his Junior National show 

career when the event was hosted in 

East Lansing, Michigan. He enjoys the 

summers when he works with the cattle, 

washing, leading and taking them to a 

few preview shows leading up to the 

national event. He also helps his dad 

select the genetics for their 50 head 

cow herd. 

“I like working with Herefords, they 

have a great attitude and temperament so 

it is enjoyable to be around them.” 

Ernst plans to attend Colorado State 

University in the fall, but has yet to 

decide on his major. He is the son of 

Marshall and Barb Ernst.

could focus on his enthusiasm for Herefords 

and fellow youth. The 21-year-old 

son of Ronnie and Kay Morgan served 

as the national vice-president of the 

American Junior Hereford Association 

last year, and was named President at 

the conclusion of the junior activities 

held July 12-19 th , in Kansas City, MO. 

He has served on the board of directors 

for the junior association for the past 

four years. 

“I grew up idolizing the board members 

and their dedication to the breed 

and the program,” he says. “This is my 

opportunity to give back to Herefords — 

what I have gained from the breed.

Expo, Morgan initiated a new venture 

for the juniors. He encouraged juniors 

to collect all the empty cans of pop 

that they have accumulated during the 

hot week in Kansas City. These cans 

would then be donated back to Kansas 

City’s Habitat for Humanity division. 

“This is a great opportunity for juniors 

to understand the importance of giving 

back,” Morgan says. 

The junior board has also implemented 

a mentorship program. A first-time 

junior exhibitor is paired up with an 

older member who is available to show 

the new junior the ropes and assist them 

in meeting new friends. A fun scavenger 

hunt helps the juniors learn more about 

the event and the mentor is there to answer 

more questions as well. 

Morgan recalls his first junior show. In 

fact it is one that his family remembers 

vividly. They loaded up six calves, four 

kids and two adults and headed west 

from the Sandhills of Nebraska over the 

Rocky Mountain range and ended up in 

Chico, CA. It took the family two-andhalf-days 

to get to Chico, and they saw 

many miles of great countryside along 

the way and experienced driving through 

the mountains for the first time. 

Morgan hasn’t missed a Junior Hereford 

Expo since he started attending and 

exhibiting. “It’s a gathering of the best 

people and best cattle in the world that 

are competing in a friendly competition 

through showing cattle or knowledge 

events,” he says. Morgan said the friends 

he and his family have met all have the 

same passion and thus it makes their 

friendship stronger.

contacted Hereford America recently 

about this shipment and their involvement. 

Thirty-nine registered two-yearold 

cows from the Imig Ranch made the 

long trip along with their calves. 

After passing stringent health testing 

and quarantine on their ranch, including 

a separate water supply, the cattle were 

trucked to Chicago where they were 

loaded onto the plane. Roger Imig says 

a lot of time and preparation went into 

the transaction. The cows were “vaccinated 

multiple times for just about everything.” 

Once the cattle got to Chicago they 

rested and were fed and watered for three 

days. The cattle were then loaded into 

crates and put on pallets. Each crate contained 

five cows. The calves were crated 

separately. The flight took approximately 

17 hours. 

Imigs were not the only American 

Hereford ranch sending cattle on this 

shipment. Approximately 126 cows, 115 

calves and 12 bulls were sent on this 

shipment. Mark McClintock, manager of 

Rocking Chair Ranch, Ft. McCavett, TX 

along with Gary Wilson of the Winrock 

Foundation went to Kazakhstan with the 

cattle. McClintock and Rocking Chair 

had cattle on this shipment as well as 

Hoffman Herefords from Leola, SD and 

Douthit Herefords of St. Francis, KS.

The country of Kazakhstan is located south of Russia and between that country, China, 

Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgystan. The cattle flew into Almaty. Dinara Ranch, their final 

destination, is in the southeastern part of the country.

Jack Lawrence Cooper 

Jack Lawrence Cooper, 90, lifelong 

rancher, beloved husband, father, 

grandfather and great-grandfather, 

passed away peacefully at his home on 

Tuesday, June 3, 2008, surrounded by 

his family. 

The oldest of five children, Jack was 

born to Frank and Anna (Shogren) Cooper 

on Sept. 12, 1917. He was raised on 

his family’s homestead and received 

his education at Willow Creek High 

School. 

On Oct. 30, 1948, Jack married Phyllis 

Georgieana Garcelon in Clear Lake, 

Wis. Together they raised three children, 

Bob, Mark and Lois. 

Jack remained on his family’s ranch 

throughout his life. He bought his father’s 

small dairy farm and built it into 

a nationally recognized cattle operation. 

Jack and Phyllis’ association with the 

cattle industry brought many wonderful 

people into their lives who eventually 

became lifelong friends. Many cups 

of coffee and cookies were shared and 

memories made around their kitchen 

table. 

A charismatic man who led by example, 

Jack’s quiet nature and loving arms 

touched many people throughout his life. 

He was a man with a firm handshake, a 

tender heart, and a contagious smile. 

Known by many as a prankster, Jack 

loved telling stories and was quick to 

laugh at himself and his past. Jack loved 

his family very much and remained in 

contact with them and his many close 

friends throughout his life. 

An avid sports fan, Jack spent a great 

deal of his time following his children’s 

and grandchildren’s sporting events. 

He and Phyllis attended many Bobcat 

games and enjoyed watching the Boston 

Celtics on TV. The two also enjoyed 

playing cards and traveling. 

Jack’s passion for ranching and his 

keen knowledge of Hereford cattle led 

him to be one of the premier Hereford 

breeders in the world. He received 

numerous awards and recognitions 

for his accomplishments. In 1975, he 

was honored by the Beef Improvement 

Federation as Seed Stock Producer of 

the Year and as Outstanding Cattleman 

by the Gallatin County Beef Producers. 

Jack also won the Agricultural Recognition 

Award by the Bozeman chapter of 

Alpha Zeta. In 1980 he was inducted 

into the American Hereford Association’s 

Hereford Heritage Hall’s Honor 

Gallery. He was an active member in 

the American Hereford Association, 

National Cattlemen’s Association, Beef 

Improvement Federation and Montana 

Stock Growers Association. He was a 

charter member of the Montana Beef 

Performance Association, a board 

member for the Federal Land Bank 

Association, and an area trustee for the 

Yellowstone Boys Ranch. 

Jack was also an active member in his 

community. He served on the Willow 

Creek school board for 25 years, was a 

4-H club leader for five years, and served 

on the Willow Creek water and cemetery 

boards. He was a longtime member of 

the Willow Creek Methodist Church, 

Three Forks Masonic Lodge No. 73, and 

the Baghdad Shriner Center. 

Jack was preceded in death by his 

wife, Phyllis, of 53 years; parents, Frank 

and Anna Cooper; sisters, Constance 

Rowe and Betty Woodward; halfbrothers, 

Leslie Holden and Raymond 

Cooper; half-sisters, Helen Green and 

Verniece Torgerson Byrd. 

Jack is survived by his three children, 

Robert (Adeline) Cooper of 

Bozeman, Mark (Cristy) Cooper of 

Willow Creek, Lois (Doug) Zeitner of 

Billings; eight grandchildren: Gabrielle 

Cooper of Bozeman; Tracy (Stuart)

Donald E. Dubois, age 68, of rural 

Wolsey, died Monday, June 9, 2008, at 

the Huron Nursing Home. 

His funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. 

Thursday, June 12, 2008 at the Welter 

Funeral Home, Huron. Burial will be at 

Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. 

Donald Eugene Dubois was born on 

August 4, 1939, to Glen and Gertrude 

Edith (Brock) Dubois at Wolsey, SD. 

He attended Roosevelt country grade 

school in Vernon Township, and graduated 

from Wolsey High School in 1958. 

On October 16, 1958, Donald married 

Joyce Curtis at Wolsey, SD. He farmed 

and ranched in rural Wolsey all of his 

life. He raised and sold Polled Hereford 

cattle under the Curtis Polled Hereford 

name. 

He was a member of the American

Leland W. Herman 

Leland W. Herman was born at the 

family farm northeast of Wayne, NE 

on Nov 13, 1922. He died July 2, 2008 

at the Providence Medical Center 

in Wayne, NE. Leland was the third 

generation to live on the farm called 

Hervale. 

He had a life long love for his Polled 

Herefords, agriculture, 4-H, youth 

activities, Wayne County Fair and the 

conservative side of politics. 

Leland’s early beginning in purebred 

livestock started when he showed and 

won Grand Champion at Ak-Sar-Ben 

in Omaha in 1940 and 1941. His cattle 

were exhibited nationally at Chicago, 

Baton Rouge, Fort Worth, Denver, San 

Francisco and in Calgary and Edmonton 

in Alberta, Canada and lots of State Fairs 

in between. 

After serving in the Army during WW 

II he went right back to the farm and 

raised Polled Herefords. 

Leland was on the Wayne County 

Fair board for 54 years and President 

for 23. 

He was a long time member and 

Chairman of the Board of the American 

Polled Hereford Assn in 1975. 

He won the Grand Champion Steer 

in both 1940 and 1941 at Ak-Sar-Ban. 

He showed cattle nationally as well in 

41 states. 

Leland helped organize the Wayne 

County Farm Bureau and was President 

for seven years.

The funeral for Roy Darnell, 62, of 

Freedom, OK, was held Monday, July 

7, 2008, at First Christian Church, 

Coldwater, KS. Brian Frable officiated. 

Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery, 

Coldwater. Arrangements were 

by Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, 

Coldwater. 

He was born June 26, 1946, in Lamar, 

CO, to Donald Bryce and Wanda Belle 

Hoffman Darnell and died Thursday, 

July 3, 2008, at Grace Living Center, 

Buffalo, KS. 

He grew up in Coy and attended 

Coy and Centerview country schools 

and graduated from Freedom High 

School in 1964. He attended Oklahoma 

State University. He was a cattleman 

known for his efforts to breed and 

promote Line One Herefords and was a 

lifetime member of American Hereford 

Association. He also cowboyed for 

many area ranchers. 

Surviving are his wife, Sandy, of 

Freedom; two sons, Kirk Darnell of 

Bartlesville, OK and Clint Darnell 

of Haviland, KS; one daughter, 

Connie Johnson of Ringwood, OK; 

his stepmother, Harriette Darnell of 

Hitchcock, OK; one brother, Gary 

Darnell of Watonga, OK; one sister, 

Charolette Martin of Fort Valley, GA; 

and 15 grandchildren.

Jodee Kawulok 

Jodee Kawulok, age 50, of Gillette, 

WY, died on Sunday, July 13, 2008 

at her home after a long battle with 

cancer. 

Jodee Ann Kawulok was born on October 

11, 1957 in Gillette, Wyoming to 

Joseph and Dorothy Ann (Wormwood) 

Kawulok. She grew up in Gillette, 

graduating from Campbell County High 

School in 1976. Jodee attended Sheridan 

College where she received an Associates 

Degree in Dental Hygiene. She 

worked for numerous dentists in the Gillette 

and Wright area from the time she 

received her degree in 1978 until 2005. 

Jodee loved raising Hereford cattle and 

Quarter Horses. She was a member of 

the American and Wyoming Hereford 

Associations, and the American Quarter 

Horse Association. Jodee served as 

advisor to the Wyoming Junior Hereford 

Association for a number of years. Jodee 

was a member of the Campbell County 

Cow-Belles and Wool Growers. Her 

love of animals also lead her to work as a 

vet tech for Animal Medical Center from 

1994-2004. One of Jodee’s favorite past 

times was competing in the Team Penning 

held each year at the County Fair. 

She won the “buckle” in 2004. Jodee 

served as superintendent of the Beef division 

and the Sheep Lead contest at the 

Campbell Co. Fair for a number of years. 

She actively supported the 4-H program 

having participated in it while growing 

up. Jodee loved baking and cooking. 

She was always finding new recipes to 

try out. She enjoyed gardening, was an 

accomplished seamstress and LOVED 

TO SHOP!!!! 

Jodee is survived by her father Joseph 

R. Kawulok and her sister Toni K. 

Kawulok both of Gillette, WY. 

She was preceded in death by her 

mother Dorothy Ann Kawulok, and 

her grandparents George and Florence 

Wormwood, and Joseph and Edith 

Kawulok.

Melvin Price 

Melvin Price, 91, of Tulare, SD, died 

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the Huron 

Regional Medical Center. 

Melvin George Price was born January 

12, 1917 to George and Laura 

(Smart) Price at Tulare, SD. He grew 

up on a farm near Tulare and attended 

school in Garfield Township as well as 

Tulare where he graduated from high 

school in 1935. Melvin attended one 

year at Northern State, before farming, 

in 1937. He continued farming until his 

retirement. His special interest was raising 

registered polled Hereford cattle. He 

belonged to the SD Hereford Association, 

Farm Bureau and was a member 

of the Tulare Township Board for many 

years. Melvin was a life long member of 

the Tulare Methodist Church which later 

became the Tulare United Church. 

Melvin married Vera Radcliffe on 

September 26, 1940 in Watertown, SD. 

They have three sons: Donald (Jan) 

Price of Huron, SD; Dale (Sandra) Price 

of Marquette, NE; and Roger (Jeri) 

Price of Plumas Lake, CA; and one 

daughter Delores (Richard) Gould of 

Mitchell, SD. Melvin is also survived 

by one brother Wesley Price of Tulare, 

SD and a sister-in-law Harriet Price of 

Sacramento, CA, twelve grandchildren 

and thirteen great grandchildren as well 

as many nieces and nephews. 

Melvin was preceded in death by three 

brothers: John, Harvey and Maurice, and 

one sister Lauretta. 

Charles Barkley 

Funeral service for Charles Henry 

Barkley, 93, a former resident of Gillette 

and Rapid City died Wednesday, 

August 6, 2008 at the Douglas Care 

Center in Douglas, Wyoming of natural 

causes. He was born March 15, 1915 in


Paris, Illinois the son of Orlando and 

Rosa (Rhoades) Barkley. 

Charles came to Gillette in an immigrant 

car in 1918 with his parents, brothers, 

and sisters. His parents homesteaded 

southwest of Gillette on the 4-J Road. 

His father built the Bethlehem Community 

Church in 1922, and Charles 

was an active preacher and teacher there 

for over 60 years. In 1935 he graduated 

from Campbell County High School and 

was married to his high school sweetheart, 

Louise McClelland, in November 

1935. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage 

and raised five children. 

Charles was proud of having planted 

the twin spruce trees in front of Twin 

Spruce Junior High School in 1934. 

During the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, 

Charles and his sons had one of the finest 

herd of registered Hereford cattle in the 

United States. Charles loved his God, 

his family, and his cattle. 

Charles and Louise retired to Rapid 

City, SD in 1992, where Charles was active 

in the Big Ben Presbyterian Church 

and Rimrock Church and preached occasionally. 

Charles was preceded in death 

by his parents; his wife, Louise; and 

one daughter. Left to grieve his passing 

are his children, Nancy Taylor of Simsbury, 

CT, Bob (Betty) Barkley of San 

Antonio, TX, Bill (Trenette) Barkley of 

Cheyenne, WY, Jack (Deborah) Barkley 

of Eden Prairie, MN, and Dan Barkley 

of Shakopee, MN; 12 grandchildren, 

Steven, Sandra, Diana, Beth, Rosemary, 

Barbara, Jason, Jennifer, Julie, Justin, 

Chelsey, and William; and nine great 

grandchildren. 

John E. “Jack” Henderson 

John E. “Jack” Henderson, 79, died 

April 16, 2008 at Regional West Medical 

Center, Alliance, NE. 

Jack was born in rural Scotts Bluff 

County, NE, to Earl and Katherine 

(Yost) Henderson on Dec. 11, 1928. 

He was active in numerous organizations 

such as the West Nebraska; 

Nebraska and American Hereford 

Association and the R-Calf Assocation. 

He was a 32 nd Degree Mason as 

well as the Tehema Shrine Temple and 

Cattle Capital Shrine Clubs of Alliance. 

Jack was also a 4-H leader and a past 

president of the Hemingford Telephone 

Cooperative. 

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy 

Henderson of Alliance; daughter, Debra 

Henderson of Hemingford; sons, David 

(Dee) Henderson and Bryan (Trudy) 

Henderson all of Sioux County and a 

sister, May Jane (Tom) Gray of Vail, 

OR; six grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren 

as well as numerous 

nieces and nephews. His parents preceded 

him in death.

Volunteer Fire Department or 

the Shriner’s Crippled Children Hospitals. 

Anna Beth Allgood-Pierce 

Anna Beth Allgood-Pierce, 90, ended 

her journey on earth peacefully on April 

6, 2008, at her home in Prescott, AZ. She 

was born on July 2, 1917, the oldest of 

four children born to Ernest and Viva 

Allgood. The family moved in a Model 

A to the Salt River Valley where Ernest 

farmed in Chandler and Scottsdale. 

Anna Beth attended Scottsdale schools 

where she met her future husband, 

Delbert Pierce, at 10 years of age. 

She and Delbert were two of the first 

graduates of Scottsdale High School. 

Anna Beth attended Arizona State 

Teachers College where she obtained her 

three-year teaching certificate. 

In 1938, she and Delbert were married. 

They raised four children and continued 

farming in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. 

In 1963, they moved to Prescott after 

purchasing the Las Vegas Ranch. Anna 

Beth was a true farmer and ranch wife — 

bottle-feeding lambs, helping herd cattle 

down Chicago Avenue, now 44th Street, 

branding cattle, milking cows, churning 

butter and canning. She did it all with 

her wonderful wit and sense of humor. 

She was always loving, thoughtful and 

fun to her children, grandchildren and 

friends. Her birthday cards and phone 

calls were always anticipated and she 

never forgot anyone. Anna Beth loved 

being a mother and grandmother and 

we in turn loved spending time with 

her. Being with grandma was a favorite 

thing to do. 

Anna Beth was active in Yavapai 

29th Annual Sale 

County Cowbelles where she served 

as president several times. The First 

Congregational Church was fortunate 

to have her as a member. Anna Beth 

enjoyed P.E.O. Chapter O for many 

years and she never revealed what 

P.E.O. stood for despite much begging. 

Anna Beth is survived by her daughter 

Betsy and sons Steve and Mike; eight 

grandchildren; five great-grandchildren 

and sister Delma Baker of State College 

Pennsylvania. She is preceded in death 

by her son Gary Delbert. 

Clyde Delbert Pierce 

Clyde Delbert Pierce, 91, “passed 

over the Great Divide” to join his wife, 

Anna Beth, on Friday, April 18, 2008, 

in Prescott, AZ. 

He was the oldest of four children 

born to Hazel Amelia and Nelson Clyde 

Pierce on Dec. 19, 1916. Delbert’s wife 

of 69 years, Anna Beth, preceded him 

in death just 12 days earlier and Delbert 

lost his will to live. 

He was born and raised in Phoenix and 

Scottsdale. At 10 years of age, he met 

his future wife and best friend for the 

next 81 years, Anna Beth. He and Anna 

Beth were in the first graduating class 

from Scottsdale High School where he 

served as quarterback of the football 

team and Student Body President. In 

later years, he served on the Scottsdale 

School Board.

the outdoors. He attended Colorado 

State University and the University of 

Arizona studying Animal Science. On 

Nov. 8, 1938, he married his lifelong 

sweetheart, Anna Beth Allgood. They 

lived in Phoenix farming and raising 

cattle. He and his father started Pierce 

Farms, Inc. when they purchased several 

farms and properties in the Valley. 

Delbert did what he had always wanted 

to do, live a life in agriculture. He and 

his father farmed at Thomas Road and 

Chicago Avenue, later named 44th 

Street. 

After a family tragedy of losing a son, 

Delbert and Anna Beth opened the 

Larro feed store on Van Buren and 

worked at The Tropical Grove Nursery 

until he returned to farming and raising 

registered Shorthorn cattle. 

Throughout his life, Delbert owned 

several ranches around Northern 

Arizona, one at Mayer, then the Doll 

Baby Ranch in Payson, Cold Springs 

Ranch in Payson, and in 1959 settled 

in Prescott after buying the Las Vegas 

Ranch. 

In 1961, his family-owned Pierce 

Farms, Inc. purchased the adjoining 

Long Meadow Ranch. Delbert operated 

both ranches with the help of Anna 

Beth until 1975. He bred and raised 

registered and commercial Hereford 

cattle, selling and showing cattle at 

the Arizona National Livestock Show, 

which he helped organize in 1949. The

Delbert believed in God, his wife, 

his family, treating people as he wanted 

to be treated, honesty, integrity, hard 

work, and his Republican Party. He 

could never have a conversation without 

getting into politics. He always said that 

a man’s word is his bond and lived with 

business and a handshake. He loved 

gardening, planting dahlias and always 

planted trees “to make the world a better 

place when you leave.” He was active 

in his church, as a 4-H leader, and in 

numerous associations. 

He was a member of Arizona Cattle 

Growers and past President of the 

Yavapai Cattle Growers and he and 

Anna Beth were Cattle Growers of the 

Year in 1996. Delbert was the 1966 

Rancher of the Year presented by the 

Prescott Kiwanis. Also, in 1966 the 

Society of Range Management honored 

Delbert and then again in 1983, he won 

the same award with his son Steve 

from the Arizona Section of the Range 

Management Society for extensive 

work in habitat improvement, range 

management and conservation.

and honors from the Arizona Cattle 

Growers Association as Rancher of 

Nebraska Hereford Association’s 

Visiting great Hereford herds in Northeastern Nebraska!

Louis Latimer Honored by 

BIF as Pioneer Breeder 

The Beef Improvement Federation 

(BIF) honored Louis Taylor 

Latimer, former Shorthorn and current 

Hereford and Angus breeder, 

with the 2008 Pioneer Award on July 

3rd during the organization’s 40th 

annual meeting held in Calgary, Alberta, 

hosted by the Canadian Beef 

Breeds Council. 

The Award recognizes individuals 

who have made lasting contributions 

to the improvement of beef cattle 

and who have had a major role in 

the acceptance performance reporting 

and documentation as the primary 

means to make genetic change 

in beef cattle populations. 

Louis was born Feb. 13, 1923 at 

the family farm east of Bowden AB. 

He was the second son in a family 

of four boys and one girl. His grandfather 

and father brought a herd of 

Shorthorns to Canada from Missouri 

in 1903. 

In 1945 he married Jean Winter 

and they raised a family of six, 

two boys and four girls. There are 

now twenty-one grand children and 

eleven great grand children. In 1946 

Louis and Jean purchased a section 

of land and with a herd of four 

Shorthorn cows, the foundation of 

the famed Remitall Cattle Co. was 

formed. 

In 1954, Louis and his brother 

Carroll formed a partnership that 

continued for 20 years. During this 

time the Shorthorn herd had some 

of the top sales in both Canada and 

the US. A Polled Hereford herd was 

started in 1963. 

In 1960 Louis decided it was time to 

branch out and added the John Deere 

Agency in Olds to the operation as well 

as dealerships in Comminco fertilizer, 

Chrysler cars, Miracle Feeds, Butler 

Buildings, with top sale awards coming 

to Louis in John Deere and Comminco. 

In 1976 the partnership with brother 

Carroll Latimer came to an end and 

Carroll moved to California. Louis 

continued the cattle operation and the 

Remitall name at Olds forming a partnership 

with his two sons Gary and 

Bryan Latimer — that still continues. 

Cattle continued to be the the main 

business focus. Gelbvieh and Black 

Angus herds were added along the way 

with the Gelbvieh herd being dispersed 

in the mid 1990s; today the main herds 

of Polled Herefords and Black Angus 

number over 1000 head each. Three 

grandsons Michael, Richard and Jeff 

are now involved in the operation. 

Louis has received numerous awards 

during the years including: Hall of 

Fame at Nile Exhibition 1979 (Billings 

MT); Canadian Livestock Man of 

the Year 1987 (Denver Co); American 

Shorthorn Association " Builder of the 

Breed" (Omaha NB); Canadian Hereford 

Association Honor Roll 1988; 

Alberta Angus Association Breeder of 

the Year; County of Mountain View 

Family Farm Award. 

The Remitall name and its bloodlines 

are known world-wide and have made 

great contributions to the cattle industry.

International Cattlemen Visit Fleischmann

Nebraska Junior Field Day 

On June 24, 2008, Fleischmann Family Farms hosted a group of 41 visitors from Argentina, 

Brazil and Uruguay along with representatives from Genex, a subsidiary of Cooperative Resources 

International. This special tour which was hosted by Genex came to the Tim and Anita 

Fleischmann farm near Osceola to view their bull, RV Stocker 6662 and progeny. He is owned 

with Ravine Creek Ranch, Huron, SD. 

The visitors were on a weeklong tour visiting breeders in Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, South 

Dakota, North Dakota and Montana along with Genex facilities in South Dakota and Montana. 

The stop at Fleischmann Farms was their only Hereford stop on the tour. 

While at the Fleischmann’s, the visitors were able to view and learn about RV Stocker 6662 

and his progeny. They currently have calves by the bull and are excited about the light birth 

weights of under 80 lbs. from their first calf heifers. 

Jack Ward, Chief Officer and Director of Breed Improvement of the American Hereford 

Association also spoke to the group. 

Following the tour the group was presented a lunch of certified Hereford beef, served by 

the Osceola FFA chapter, who along with some friends helped the Fleischmann’s greet these 

visitors.
