105th Annual Calgary Bull Sale<br />

March 4, <strong>2005</strong><br />

Calgary, Alberta, Canada – Two<br />

hundred and eighty-two top Alberta Bulls<br />

were sold in the 105th Annual Calgary Bull<br />

Sale hosted by the Alberta Cattle Breeders<br />

Association March 2–4, <strong>2005</strong> at<br />

Stampede Park.<br />

The sale grossed $1,016,150, an<br />

increase of nearly 35% over last year. The<br />

sale also saw growth in the averages in<br />

all three breeds; Angus, Charolais and<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong>, an increase of 15%, 26% and<br />

37% respectively.<br />

Purebred and commercial cattlemen<br />

gathered in the Stampede Agriculture<br />

building in person and on-line to purchase<br />

some Alberta bull power.<br />

“The sale was very much a buyers’<br />

market.” claimed Walter Blume of Castor,<br />

Alberta. “I never saw more bull for less<br />

money. The cattle were in nicer condition,<br />

and there were more real good bulls in<br />

my estimation than I’ve ever seen, despite<br />

the smaller numbers.”<br />

Blume has been coming to the Calgary<br />

Bull Sale since 1944 with the exception<br />

of the past two years and has sold several<br />

hundred bulls through the sale from 1950-<br />

2003. He also served on the Alberta Cattle<br />

Breeders Association from 1968-2000.<br />

“There is no future in not bringing<br />

quality.” says Blume who raises purebred<br />

horned <strong>Hereford</strong>s with his brother Allen.<br />

“The competition is extremely keen.<br />

People bring their best bulls to sell here.”<br />

The sale marked the second year in<br />

utilizing TEAM (The Electronic Auction<br />

Market) to market bulls in real-time online<br />

bidding in addition to live bidding.<br />

Over 1,000,000 hits from fourteen<br />

countries were received throughout the<br />

week of the Calgary Bull Sale. Thursday,<br />

March 3 rd was the busiest day in TEAM<br />

history with 300,000 hits. On-line sales<br />

were up 50% with 3 Angus, 2 Charolais<br />

and one <strong>Hereford</strong> selling on-line to Alberta<br />

and B.C. buyers. The blending of long-<br />
