Barry happens to be a grandson of the man who homesteaded the property, and has never been above a good joke now and then. In any case, I was finally convinced that this was indeed the ranch’s name as well as the design of its cattle brand. In 1909, Lawrence W. (Mike) Herron homesteaded in this area, primarily raising Hereford cattle. He married Ida Huyck (pronounced “hike”) of nearby Lebanon in October on 1913. The couple lived on the homestead for the next six years before acquiring additional land a few miles to the southeast. Three children were born into this union: a son, Max, and two daughters, Eileen and Lucille. At the age of eight, Max was killed when a hay wagon ran over him. A modern house was built on the ranch in 1928. This was the same year in which Mike played a major role in helping to put on the first central South Dakota rodeo. He even enjoyed horses and always had good breeding in the ones he owned and raised. He traveled to Texas and brought back some of the first registered Quarter Horses to be introduced into the area. Now three hundred head of Hereford and Angus cross cows know this place as home, and since its humble beginning the acreage has grown to 5,000.
