Dale McPherson
Agri-Businessman of the Year
Dale McPherson was born in 1929 to
Gene and Ida McPherson and grew up
26 miles east of Sturgis on a 20,000 acre
plus Pioneer Black Hills Hereford Ranch.
After attending college for a time and
spending two years in the army, Dale
returned to college at the National College
of Business in
Rapid City,

He married
his wife
Dorothy in
1958 and
together have
two sons, Kevin and Todd.
Over the last 40 years Dale has
auctioned sales at Rapid City, Wall, St.
Onge, Belle Fourche, Philip, Presho,
Mitchell, Martin, Highmore, Chadron and
Rushville Nebraska, and Hettinger North
Dakota and of course Faith Livestock
Auction, where Dale considers his home.
But Dale McPherson’s auctioneering
talents don’t stop at livestock auctions.
He was the first auctioneer to do a real
estate auction on the internet in Western
South Dakota. McPherson Auction
Company continues to be the premier
auction service for farm and ranch, real
estate, and they’ve even handled a gun
show every now and then.
Dale is known for being active in
community organizations including the
Rapid City Chamber of Commerce,
Central States Fair, Western Junior
Livestock Association, the Old Timers
Cowboy Breakfast and St. Jude’s
Research Hospital.
He was recently inducted into the South
Dakota Auctioneers Association Hall of
Fame.
Now sons Kevin and Todd are involved
in auctioneering, but that hasn’t slowed
Dale from being involved in area auctions.
His long term support to the agriculture
and business community is why he has
been chosen as this year Black Hills
Stockshow Agri-businessman of the Year.
Dick & Pearl Taylor
BHSS Hall of Fame
Dick was born in Harrington, Neb. to
Mr. & Mrs.
Walt Taylor.
Soon after the
family moved
to Rapid City
where his
f a t h e r
managed the
Warren-Lamb
Ranch at old
Brennan for
thirty years.
Dick attended high school in Rapid City
and received a degree in civil engineering
at the South Dakota School of Mines and
Technology.
Dick married Pearl Sanders in 1943. She
grew up on a ranch near Pactola and also
graduated from Rapid City High School
and the Black Hills Commercial College.
The couple lived and worked in Seattle
for a time before returning to the Black
Hills where Dick entered into partnership
with his father and brother.
Dick established the Golden Rule
Hereford Ranch in Rapid Valley and later
acquired the Sanders Ranch at Pactola.
The Taylor’s have been very active in
the Stock Growers for over fifty years
and have held offices or participated in
other organizations including; the Black
Hills Hereford Breeder’s Association,
Black Hills Exposition and Central States
Fair
Pearl kept busy with ranch activities,
helping their three daughters with 4-H
projects and working at Rushmore Mutual
Insurance. In 1994 she was honored by
the South Dakota Stockgrowers and given
a South Dakota CattleWomen award.
In 1990 Dick & Pearl retired, sold off
the cows and all but eighty acres where
they now live and keep busy with their
grandkids.
The Taylor’s dedication and
involvement in the South Dakota
Stockgrowers Association, The Black
Hills Stock Show, Central State’s Fair and
other community committees has
rightfully earned them the spot in the 2005
Black Hills Stock Show Hall of Fame.
KIRK CORDES
2005 STOCKMAN OF THE YEAR
Kirk grew up on his parent’s ranch near
Elm Springs with five older sisters and a
younger brother. He graduated from
Sturgis High School in 1958 and returned
to the family ranch and continued
ranching with
his father and
brother-inlaw.
In 1967 he
married
Kathy Jensen,
and decided
to
further his
education
South Dakota
State University where he received his Ag
Business degree in 1970.
In 1973 they purchased a ranch 28 miles
northeast of Wall, where they continue to
run a cow/calf/yearling operation for the
past 31 years. His son Spencer and
daughter-in-law, Paige, are now actively
involved in the operation of the ranch as
well.
Several ranching practices have been
implemented over the years including
