I will have to admit that after awhile I do treat a lot of advertising coming over the internet to my email address like I do advertisements we get in the mail — I delete it without even looking at it unless I know the breeder. Oh well, I guess I’m getting used to junk mail over the internet just like we receive over the fax or in our post office mail box. The nicest thing about internet junk mail is that I can usually request to stop receiving it. Art Handel and I visited and had supper with four very nice people from the U.K. in January the night before the Van Newkirk sale in Nebraska. Just a week or two ago I received a package in the mail from them with a nice letter, a great looking tie, the U.K.’s Hereford Breed Journal, and an apron to be used when grilling those good Ridgefield steaks. I think I’ll just hang the apron on the wall to remind me of friends “across the pond.” Chris Effling, AHA Field Staff representative for the North Central Region, resigned and took on a new job with the Dakota Farmer, a publication that is concentrated in the north central states such as the Dakotas, Minnesota, etc. Chris will be a field rep with responsibilities primarily in North and South Dakota. Chris and I flew to the Mill Creek sale at Manhattan, KS a few weeks ago, probably one we won’t forget. From the time I left home, picked up Chris at Pierre and continued to Manhattan, it took us 2-1/2 hours. Coming home it took us a little over 4-1/2 hours! Kinda windy that day but Chris and I both agreed it was a lot easier and more enjoyable than driving the same distance. Good luck Chris with your new job. The two associations in Nebraska have combined recently. Ron & Kay Morgan were the managers of the Nebraska Hereford Association and Joe Brockman was the manager of the Nebraska Polled Hereford Association. Now that the two associations are one (the New Nebraska Hereford Association) both managers have decided to hang it up. Both Morgans and Brockmans were great to work with gathering information needed for Hereford America. We really appreciate the efforts these two families have contributed over the years to their respective state associations and hope to have more on their contributions in a future issue. You might recall in the last issue of Hereford America I mentioned an opportunity that we at Hereford America have extended to state Hereford associations. The North Dakota Hereford Association and the Kansas Hereford Association took advantage of our offer and they’re already reaping rewards! North Dakota received a check for $145 and Kansas received a check for $175. If your state association wants to get involved email us at marc@herefordamerica.com or call us. We feel like we’re contributing to our Hereford industry immensely by helping our state associations. I also encourage anyone to write us a letter or email us your opinion on topics concerning the Hereford industry. We’d be more than happy to include it in our “Letters to the Editor.” There are some basic guidelines and stipulations we use but we’ve not turned one down yet. One last thing, I got home last night from a new Hereford sale in Montana. Three young breeders went together to hold the largest Polled Hereford sale in Montana. It is really encouraging to see the next generation step up to the plate and take their place in the Hereford business. Congratulations to Bernie & Stacie Buzanowski, Cody & Shad Haber and Ken & Shannon Jackson on holding their first annual production sale! See ya down the road — Marc Jill’s Comments... (continued from page 1) cattle business. There are a number of ways to think outside the box. The whole point is to look at things in a different way than you normally would for the purpose of coming up with new ideas and ways of doing things that would benefit your business and breeding program. If you’re a Polled Hereford breeder who never looks at horned cattle, go look at several horned herds. Likewise, if you’re a horned breeder who never looks at Polled cattle, you need to go take a look. A lot has changed in both horned and polled cattle over the last 5-10 years. When I talk to a breeder who is adamantly against either horned or polled cattle it just amazes me because I know most haven’t even looked at the cattle they are criticizing — for quite some time. When you’re world is small, you really limit yourself. It wouldn’t hurt to look at other breeds either and see how they are handling certain situations. Infighting is not doing our breed any good. Over the past week or two we’ve gotten some heat over a couple ads that ran in our last issue. (Marc thinks maybe it’s a combination of people being stressed out over taxes and calving!) Those of you who read our paper know we aren’t into censorship. We generally allow people their opinions in their ads and letters. You should also know that we don’t always share the opinions in all these ads or letters. That is true in almost any American trade publication that is not published by a specific organization. We have also allowed Angus advertising in our paper for quite some time so this isn’t a new thing. Check your back issues. We value freedom of the press which is certainly evident in our editorials. This is one of the components that makes our newspaper so popular with our readership and advertisers. On another subject, I would like to congratulate my Dad, Byron Bayers, on receiving the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the FAA at the recent Montana Aeronautics Association Convention. This is quite an honor and achievement. He was one of two people selected for the award this year. What a tremendous pilot who has flown over 10,000 hours. What a nice award to recognize his achievements and dedication. Herefords and airplanes have been a part of my entire life, usually both at the same time. I don’t think that will change. A friend e-mailed me several really good quotes this week. I think the following is a good one by Ronald Reagan: “No arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women. As this is our last issue of the spring, I wish you all a good summer. I’m sure we will have lots to report to you in our next issue. — JBH
April/May 2005 HEREFORD AMERICA • 19 Bayers Receives Wright Brothers “Master Pilot Award From Federal Aviation Agency Byron Bayers of Twin Bridges, MT was awarded the Wright Brothers “Master Pilot Award” at the recent Montana Aviation Conference held in Butte, MT March 3-4-5. The award is given by the Federal Aviation Agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The award recognizes the efforts of pilots who have followed and continue to follow the precaution and awareness of safe flight operations. Most of all the FAA recognizes pilots who have contributed and maintained safe flight operations for 50 or more consecutive years of piloting. Bayers, who has a commercial, instrument and multi engine ratings, has flown over one and one half million miles without injury to pilot or passenger.
