This is an interesting 

business for 

us in a number of 

ways. We travel a 

great deal and in 

the course of those 

travels get to see a 

wide variety of

some wonderful people. That’s definitely 

one of the perks of being in the 

business we are in. I think breeders 

of yesteryear made more of a point 

to travel the country and visit various 

different herds and breeders. Of 

course with the lack of technology it 

was a necessity to do so. Now days 

it seems like breeders within a state 

often times don’t even get to each 

other’s sales. I commend those who 

do. Really, it is to your benefit to get 

out and see other herds. 

You’ve probably heard of thinking 

outside the box. I challenge you breeders 

to do this when it comes to the

working on sale catalogs and taking 

calls from people interested in cattle 

on which they are asking our opinion 

or need more information. 

We have seen a tremendous 

upswing this sale season on the 

number of people viewing catalogs 

on the internet. If you have a 

production sale you need to get your 

catalog on the internet. We have seen 

an increase in traffic over last year 

of about 400%! That is taking the 

average number of hits last year on 

catalogs we put on the internet versus 

the catalogs we had on this year 

from the same breeders.

Frederickson Honored By Minnesota Livestock Breeders 

Mark Frederickson, Hereford breeder 

from Starbuck, MN was inducted into the 

Minnesota Livestock Breeders Hall of 

Fame on March 10, 2005 in a ceremony 

held at the University of Minnesota, St. 

Paul. He was among three honorees at the 

event. The others honored at the event 

were Chuck Christians, former Extension 

specialist and juding team coach and Dr. 

Ed Graham (posthumously) who is credited 

as being the first person to successfully 

A.I.cattle and had the first animal born 

from A.I. He also was one of the first researchers 

who worked on embryo transfer. 

Frederickson, with his wife Mary Kay, 

daughter Sarah and son Nate and his wife 

Jayna (St. Onge, SD) own and operate 

Frederickson Hereford Farm (FHF) near 

Starbuck, MN. The farm was established 

in about 1975. They currently run 100- 

125 purebred Hereford cows with genetics 

tracing back to some of the top Polled

Upper Midwest States Excel in Dams of Distinction 

Listings: South Dakota’s Rausch Tops List 

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The American 

Hereford Association’s (AHA) Dam of 

Distinction award is the standard by which 

all Hereford cows are judged. Many 

Hereford breeders would be thrilled to have 

one female recognized in this capacity. In 

2004, Rausch Herefords, Hoven, S.D., 

topped the list with 40 Dams of Distinction. 

Rausch’s have had the most Dams of 

Distinction for the past 24 years, reflecting 

not only quality of cattle, but also 

consistency in management. 

Rausch Herefords is one of the 

operations that led South Dakota to the 

top of the state list. With 190 females 

qualifying, South Dakota tops Nebraska, 

the second state, by 29 cows. 

To be honored in 2004, a cow must 

have weaned a calf born since Jan. 1, 2003, 

produced at least three calves and initially 

calved at 30 months of age or less. In 

addition, it is required that the interval 

between the first and second calves not 

exceed 400 days, and that a 370-day 

calving interval be maintained after the 

second calf. 

The program also has requirements 

complimentary to the AHA’s Whole Herd 

Total Performance Reporting (TPR) 

Program. Breeders must submit weaning 

records for every calf born before June 

30, 2004. The award requires a progeny 

average 205-day weaning weight ratio of 

at least 105. 

The 2004 Dams of Distinction list 

includes 1,487 Hereford cows from 533 

herds in 43 states. Like South Dakota and 

Nebraska, other states are recognized 

year after year for excellence in females. 

Finishing 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th , respectively, for 

the second year in a row are Montana, 

North Dakota and Kansas. 

Contributing to these top rankings year 

after year are successful operations such 

as Mrnak Herefords, Bowman, N.D.; 

Upstream Ranch, Taylor, Neb.; Larry and 

Carol Gildemaster, Virgil, S.D.; and 

Donald Dubois, Wolsey, S.D. 

Setting the standard is no small feat.

The second high selling bull at the Black Hills Stock Show, Rapid City, 

SD was consigned by Gibson Hereford Ranch, Larry and Karen 

Gibson, Wallace, NE. G L1 Domino 206H sold for $5100 to Jensen & 

Lehrkamp, Caputa, SD. 

Genetic Outreach Program Update 

The Genetic Outreach Program, administered and managed by the Kansas 

Hereford Association is thriving and going very well. Over 400 steers are 

currently on feed at Royal Beef in Scott City, Kansas. The first group, 

started in December have been ultrasounded and are well on their way to 

market. The scan data will be used to market many of these cattle with 

National Beef and CHB already showing interest. Very little health problems 

have been encountered and the cattle are gaining very well with many over 

the four pound rate. The second group went on feed in February and have 

a good start with very little sickness and good weather for the most part. 

The next GOP start date will be in June. Also anytime a producer wants 

to start a load of cattle and have them run through GOP, contact the Kansas 

Hereford Association and we will try and work something out to help you. 

We intend this to become a “user friendly” operation with the emphasis on 

finding and isolating the best Hereford cattle to benefit the breeders involved 

and their customers. National Beef is really starting to look at these cattle 

seriously and we hope the premiums will be forthcoming at market time. 

We are also working on source identification with the feedyard and hoping 

to get premiums for the participants for their efforts.

Montana Stockgrowers Association 

hires Brewster as field representative 

The Montana Stockgrowers 

Association (MSGA) announced they 

have hired Bill Brewster of Townsend 

to serve as field representative of the 

state’s largest livestock organization. 

Steve Pilcher, executive vice president 

of MSGA, said Brewster’s duties will 

include serving as a liaison between 

members and the organization, 

promoting MSGA at livestock events 

across the state, and communicating the 

policy and work of the association to 

ranchers and affiliated industry 

members. 

Brewster’s experience includes 

extensive work in journalism and 

communications-both in Montana and 

nationally, experience with outdoor 

recreation and product marketing, 

serving as press officer for the 1980 

Winter Olympics, training horses, and 

owning and managing several different 

ranches in Montana. 

“Bill brings to this organization a great 

background in the livestock industry and 

in communications but, more 

importantly, he brings a passion for our 

industry that I feel will make him a very 

effective representative for MSGA,” 

said Pilcher. 

Brewster said working for MSGA will 

be a great opportunity to utilize his 

experience and continue his involvement 

in Montana’s livestock industry. 

“I look forward to getting out in the 

country, visiting with ranchers and 

hearing their concerns, and bringing their 

message back to the organization,” said 

Brewster. “Ranching is our state’s 

largest and most important industry, and 

the Montana Stockgrowers Association 

is here to serve as a voice for that 

industry.” 

Brewster resides in Townsend with 

his wife, Georgjean, and will work out 

of the Helena MSGA office.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada – Two 

hundred and eighty-two top Alberta Bulls 

were sold in the 105th Annual Calgary Bull 

Sale hosted by the Alberta Cattle Breeders 

Association March 2–4, 2005 at 

Stampede Park. 

The sale grossed $1,016,150, an 

increase of nearly 35% over last year. The 

sale also saw growth in the averages in 

all three breeds; Angus, Charolais and 

Hereford, an increase of 15%, 26% and 

37% respectively. 

Purebred and commercial cattlemen 

gathered in the Stampede Agriculture 

building in person and on-line to purchase 

some Alberta bull power. 

“The sale was very much a buyers’ 

market.” claimed Walter Blume of Castor, 

Alberta. “I never saw more bull for less 

money. The cattle were in nicer condition, 

and there were more real good bulls in 

my estimation than I’ve ever seen, despite 

the smaller numbers.” 

Blume has been coming to the Calgary 

Bull Sale since 1944 with the exception 

of the past two years and has sold several 

hundred bulls through the sale from 1950- 

2003. He also served on the Alberta Cattle 

Breeders Association from 1968-2000. 

“There is no future in not bringing 

quality.” says Blume who raises purebred 

horned Herefords with his brother Allen. 

“The competition is extremely keen. 

People bring their best bulls to sell here.” 

The sale marked the second year in 

utilizing TEAM (The Electronic Auction 

Market) to market bulls in real-time online 

bidding in addition to live bidding. 

Over 1,000,000 hits from fourteen 

countries were received throughout the 

week of the Calgary Bull Sale. Thursday, 

March 3 rd was the busiest day in TEAM 

history with 300,000 hits. On-line sales 

were up 50% with 3 Angus, 2 Charolais 

and one Hereford selling on-line to Alberta

We’re also seeing breeders use the 

internet more in making breeding decisions 

for their specific program. I will have to 

admit that after awhile I do treat a lot of 

advertising coming over the internet to my 

email address like I do advertisements we 

get in the mail — I delete it without even 

looking at it unless I know the breeder. 

Oh well, I guess I’m getting used to junk 

mail over the internet just like we receive 

over the fax or in our post office mail 

box. The nicest thing about internet junk 

mail is that I can usually request to stop 

receiving it. 

Art Handel and I visited and had supper 

with four very nice people from the U.K. 

in January the night before the Van 

Newkirk sale in Nebraska. Just a week 

or two ago I received a package in the 

mail from them with a nice letter, a great 

looking tie, the U.K.’s Hereford Breed 

Journal, and an apron to be used when 

grilling those good Ridgefield steaks. I 

think I’ll just hang the apron on the wall 

to remind me of friends “across the 

pond.” 

Chris Effling, AHA Field Staff 

representative for the North Central 

Region, resigned and took on a new job 

with the Dakota Farmer, a publication that 

is concentrated in the north central states 

such as the Dakotas, Minnesota, etc. 

Chris will be a field rep with 

responsibilities primarily in North and 

South Dakota. Chris and I flew to the Mill 

Creek sale at Manhattan, KS a few weeks 

ago, probably one we won’t forget. From 

the time I left home, picked up Chris at 

Pierre and continued to Manhattan, it took 

us 2-1/2 hours. Coming home it took us 

a little over 4-1/2 hours! Kinda windy that 

day but Chris and I both agreed it was a 

lot easier and more enjoyable than driving 

the same distance. Good luck Chris with 

your new job. 

The two associations in Nebraska have 

combined recently. Ron & Kay Morgan 

were the managers of the Nebraska 

Hereford Association and Joe Brockman 

was the manager of the Nebraska Polled 

Hereford Association. Now that the two 

associations are one (the New Nebraska 

Hereford Association) both managers have 

decided to hang it up. Both Morgans and 

Brockmans were great to work with 

gathering information needed for Hereford 

America. We really appreciate the efforts 

these two families have contributed over 

the years to their respective state 

associations and hope to have more on 

their contributions in a future issue. 

You might recall in the last issue of 

Hereford America I mentioned an 

opportunity that we at Hereford America 

have extended to state Hereford 

associations. The North Dakota Hereford 

Association and the Kansas Hereford 

Association took advantage of our offer 

and they’re already reaping rewards! 

North Dakota received a check for $145 

and Kansas received a check for $175. If 

your state association wants to get

We feel like we’re contributing to our 

Hereford industry immensely by helping 

our state associations.

basic guidelines and stipulations we use 

but we’ve not turned one down yet. 

One last thing, I got home last night 

from a new Hereford sale in Montana. 

Three young breeders went together to 

hold the largest Polled Hereford sale in 

Montana. It is really encouraging to see 

the next generation step up to the plate 

and take their place in the Hereford 

business. Congratulations to Bernie & 

Stacie Buzanowski, Cody & Shad Haber 

and Ken & Shannon Jackson on holding 

their first annual production sale!

cattle business. There are a number of 

ways to think outside the box. The whole 

point is to look at things in a different way 

than you normally would for the purpose 

of coming up with new ideas and ways 

of doing things that would benefit your 

business and breeding program. If you’re 

a Polled Hereford breeder who never looks 

at horned cattle, go look at several horned 

herds. Likewise, if you’re a horned breeder 

who never looks at Polled cattle, you need 

to go take a look. A lot has changed in 

both horned and polled cattle over the last 

5-10 years. When I talk to a breeder who 

is adamantly against either horned or 

polled cattle it just amazes me because I 

know most haven’t even looked at the 

cattle they are criticizing — for quite some 

time. When you’re world is small, you 

really limit yourself. It wouldn’t hurt to 

look at other breeds either and see how 

they are handling certain situations. Infighting 

is not doing our breed any good. 

Over the past week or two we’ve gotten 

some heat over a couple ads that ran 

in our last issue. (Marc thinks maybe it’s 

a combination of people being stressed out 

over taxes and calving!) Those of you who 

read our paper know we aren’t into censorship. 

We generally allow people their 

opinions in their ads and letters. You should 

also know that we don’t always share the 

opinions in all these ads or letters. That is 

true in almost any American trade publication 

that is not published by a specific 

organization. We have also allowed Angus 

advertising in our paper for quite some 

time so this isn’t a new thing. Check your 

back issues. We value freedom of the 

press which is certainly evident in our editorials. 

This is one of the components that 

makes our newspaper so popular with our 

readership and advertisers. 

On another subject, I would like to 

congratulate my Dad, Byron Bayers, on 

receiving the Wright Brothers Master Pilot 

Award from the FAA at the recent 

Montana Aeronautics Association 

Convention. This is quite an honor and 

achievement. He was one of two people 

selected for the award this year. What a 

tremendous pilot who has flown over 

10,000 hours. What a nice award to 

recognize his achievements and 

dedication. 

Herefords and airplanes have been a part 

of my entire life, usually both at the same 

time. I don’t think that will change. 

A friend e-mailed me several really good 

quotes this week. I think the following is 

a good one by Ronald Reagan: 

“No arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals 

of the world, is so formidable as the will 

and moral courage of free men and 

women.

Bayers Receives Wright 

Brothers “Master Pilot Award 

From Federal Aviation Agency 

Byron Bayers of Twin Bridges, MT was 

awarded the Wright Brothers “Master 

Pilot Award” at the recent Montana 

Aviation Conference held in Butte, MT 

March 3-4-5. The award is given by the 

Federal Aviation Agency of the U.S. 

Department of Transportation. The award 

recognizes the efforts of pilots who have 

followed and continue to follow the 

precaution and awareness of safe flight 

operations. Most of all the FAA recognizes 

pilots who have contributed and 

maintained safe flight operations for 50 

or more consecutive years of piloting. 

Bayers, who has a commercial, 

instrument and multi engine ratings, has 

flown over one and one half million miles 

without injury to pilot or passenger. 

The award is named in honor of Wilbur 

and Orville Wright, two early Aviation 

pioneers.

Letters to the Editors... 

Dear Hereford America: 

As I was reading the March Hereford 

America, I got to an ad near the back of 

the publication that caught my eye. It was 

a full page using black and black whiteface 

individuals to promote an outstanding 

combination utilizing planned hybrid vigor 

of the Angus-Hereford cross. “Way to 

go!” I thought and looked to see that it 

was from Oleen Bros. of Dwight, Kansas. 

I looked a little further to read some of 

the copy blocks and one, quite frankly, 

took my breath away (and not in a positive 

manner). The breeder extolled on what 

he felt were major differences in polled 

and horned cattle, with polled being 

inferior. For me personally, this took 

away any credibility of the breeding 

program or the black whiteface emphasis 

for which this breeder had invested his 

advertising dollars and diminished my 

opinion of them as progressive breeders. 

That same day, I was reading Hereford 

World and skimmed the schedule of the 

July PRIDE Conference. What do you 

know, the above breeder is host of an 

evening event at their ranch. You can 

imagine my thoughts now – deteriorating 

faster! 

I have been involved in our breed since 

the late 1950’s as a very young person, 

so I have some knowledge of the 

“relationship” issues we faced in the two 

sectors (horned and polled). Today, with 

the modern, new-generation breeders 

united in one national association, there is 

no room for division and divisiveness. 

I hope that the PRIDE event is 

successful in the many ways it is designed 

to be and that the youth and adults that 

attend get excited about our breed 

organization and work to 

advance it as we all should. 

I close with the thought 

that keeps running through 

my mind, which my 

parents told us and we 

hopefully have passed on to our kids: “If 

you don’t have something good to say 

about someone or something, don’t say 

anything at all.”

Belfield’s April and Jake Baumgarten 

spend countless hours preparing their 

Hereford animals for show competition. 

Their hard work was rewarded during the 

North Dakota State Fair in Minot when 

they each won top awards. 

April won a champion ribbon, while Jake 

won a reserve champion ribbon in the 4- 

H Hereford beef show. The ribbons are 

added to their collection of other awards 

with two heifers and one steer, Goldie, 

Princess and Buddrow. 

Buddrow was named Grand Champion 

steer at the North Dakota Junior Point 

Show in Minot, the North Dakota Junior 

Hereford Field Day in Williston and the 

Stark-Billings Achievement Days. The 

steer also received Reserve Champion 

honors at the Bowman County Fair. 

Goldie picked up the Reserve Champion 

heifer ribbon. Princess was named Reserve 

Champion heifer at the Junior Beef 

Expo in Williston. 

April is a sophomore and Jake is a freshman 

at Belfield High School. Their parents 

are Rolland and Tama Baumgarten, 

who raise registered Hereford beef on a 

farm nine miles southeast of Belfield. 

The students are the third generation of 

Baumgartens to compete at cattle shows. 

They watched their parents show animals 

and learned more tips through membership 

in the Silver Spurs 4-H Club. 

“Getting a champion to state, you 

have to feed a certain diet. We walk 

them about one or two miles every 

day to keep them in shape. We want 

their muscles to stay firm,” said 

April. 

She said the judges look for definition 

of muscle, structural correctness, 

how they walk and stand 

and overall appearance. 

“You have to be a good showman 

to win,” she said. 

The younger Baumgartens entered 

state fair competition for the 

first time this year. They enjoyed 

the competition and learned other 

tips for producing a winner. 

“It’s fun. I like to travel to shows 

around the state,” she said. 

Jake Baumgarten has competed 

since age 9. As a 4-H member he’s 

interested in woodworking, horticulture 

and grain production. He 

also plays high school football. Of 

all the activities, showing Herefords for 

competition is his favorite activity. 

“I like going out there. When you win it 

feels good,” he said. 

Tama Baumgarten was delighted about 

their state fair success. 

“They go out every single morning to 

feed the animals. They rinse and brush 

them. They tie them up under fans all day 

to make sure their hair grows,” she said.

“In the evening, they feed them again. 

They rinse and brush them. They walk 

them about a mile every day. This starts 

in April and goes until the fair.” 

Tama added, “You have to put in time 

to make their hair grow. The other animals 

are doing the same thing. It’s a hard 

thing in the summer. People stick a lot of 

money into their animals. People put their 

steers into coolers. Our kids have to use a 

hose and brush.” 

Rolland and Tama said their animals are 

all home raised. They have competed at 

Denver’s National Western Stock Show 

six of the past seven years. One year they 

won first place with a pen of yearling bulls. 

“I tell the kids to watch what other 

people are doing. You learn and experiment 

with different things to make them 

look right,” she said. 

Tama said children learn responsibility 

when they show animals. “If you don’t 

take care of the animal they get sick. They 

learn sportsmanship, too. They learn 

they’re not always going to win,” she said. 

The family is already looking at the 

spring crop of heifers for the upcoming 

year. The first show is the October Ag 

Expo in Dickinson. It’s the animal’s first 

appearance in a show ring. By next spring, 

they walk the ring without any sign of 

nervousness. 

“The steer was so relaxed, so proud of 

himself. He walked with his head up high. 

He was easy to show. That doesn’t happen 

that often,” she said. 

Tama said any prize money is used to 

cover expenses. April and Jake each purchased 

a heifer last fall. The Baumgartens 

are partial to Herefords. 

“Herefords have always been a breed 

that’s on top. The breed adds pounds for 

you. You don’t need black to sell in the 

ring,” she said. 

Tama said the showing of animals is not 

a profitable venture. “It’s more of an advertising 

tool to show your cattle. People 

get an idea of what you’re trying to produce,” 

she said. “It’s not for the money. 

Basically, its to be with our family. We do 

everything together when we show 

cattle.” 

The Baumgartens are members of the 

North Dakota Hereford Association, 

which helps to market the breed. They 

also hold a production sale in February in 

conjunction with Troy and Peg Perman.

Onge, Belle Fourche, Philip, Presho, 

Mitchell, Martin, Highmore, Chadron and 

Rushville Nebraska, and Hettinger North 

Dakota and of course Faith Livestock 

Auction, where Dale considers his home. 

But Dale McPherson’s auctioneering 

talents don’t stop at livestock auctions. 

He was the first auctioneer to do a real 

estate auction on the internet in Western 

South Dakota. McPherson Auction 

Company continues to be the premier 

auction service for farm and ranch, real 

estate, and they’ve even handled a gun 

show every now and then. 

Dale is known for being active in 

community organizations including the 

Rapid City Chamber of Commerce, 

Central States Fair, Western Junior 

Livestock Association, the Old Timers 

Cowboy Breakfast and St. Jude’s 

Research Hospital. 

He was recently inducted into the South 

Dakota Auctioneers Association Hall of 

Fame. 

Now sons Kevin and Todd are involved 

in auctioneering, but that hasn’t slowed 

Dale from being involved in area auctions. 

His long term support to the agriculture 

and business community is why he has 

been chosen as this year Black Hills 

Stockshow Agri-businessman of the Year.

Dick was born in Harrington, Neb. to

Dick attended high school in Rapid City 

and received a degree in civil engineering 

at the South Dakota School of Mines and 

Technology. 

Dick married Pearl Sanders in 1943. She 

grew up on a ranch near Pactola and also 

graduated from Rapid City High School 

and the Black Hills Commercial College. 

The couple lived and worked in Seattle 

for a time before returning to the Black 

Hills where Dick entered into partnership 

with his father and brother. 

Dick established the Golden Rule 

Hereford Ranch in Rapid Valley and later 

acquired the Sanders Ranch at Pactola. 

The Taylor’s have been very active in 

the Stock Growers for over fifty years 

and have held offices or participated in 

other organizations including; the Black 

Hills Hereford Breeder’s Association, 

Black Hills Exposition and Central States 

Fair 

Pearl kept busy with ranch activities, 

helping their three daughters with 4-H 

projects and working at Rushmore Mutual 

Insurance. In 1994 she was honored by 

the South Dakota Stockgrowers and given 

a South Dakota CattleWomen award. 

In 1990 Dick & Pearl retired, sold off 

the cows and all but eighty acres where 

they now live and keep busy with their 

grandkids. 

The Taylor’s dedication and 

involvement in the South Dakota 

Stockgrowers Association, The Black 

Hills Stock Show, Central State’s Fair and 

other community committees has 

rightfully earned them the spot in the 2005 

Black Hills Stock Show Hall of Fame. 

KIRK CORDES

Kirk grew up on his parent’s ranch near 

Elm Springs with five older sisters and a 

younger brother. He graduated from 

Sturgis High School in 1958 and returned 

to the family ranch and continued 

ranching with 

his father and 

brother-inlaw.

and decided 

to 

further his 

education 

South Dakota 

State University where he received his Ag 

Business degree in 1970. 

In 1973 they purchased a ranch 28 miles 

northeast of Wall, where they continue to 

run a cow/calf/yearling operation for the 

past 31 years. His son Spencer and 

daughter-in-law, Paige, are now actively 

involved in the operation of the ranch as 

well.

COD Ranch: Making a Life on the Plains of South Dakota

When my friend Barry Ellenbecker 

recently informed me of the name of the 

COD Ranch near Gettysburg, S.D., my 

first reaction was that my leg was being 

pulled a little bit. I’d always thought that 

COD stood for “cash on delivery” and 

BHSS...

Through his children, Kirk became 

involved with high school rodeo, 

served as president of the South 

Dakota High School Rodeo and was 

involved as a 4-H leader. 

He has been a member of the 

Society for Range Management for 

over 30 years, and received the 

Range Man of the Year award in 

1983. 

Because of Kirk’s admirable work 

ethic, stewardship of community and 

land and dedication to rural South 

Dakota that the BHSS honor him as 

the 2005 Black Hills Stock Show 

Stockman of the Year.

not one thing else. Barry happens to be a 

grandson of the man who homesteaded 

the property, and has never been above a 

good joke now and then. In any case, I 

was finally convinced that this was indeed 

the ranch’s name as well as the design of 

its cattle brand. 

In 1909, Lawrence W. (Mike) Herron 

homesteaded in this area, primarily raising 

Hereford cattle. He married Ida Huyck 

(pronounced “hike”) of nearby Lebanon 

in October on 1913. The couple lived on 

the homestead for 

the next six years 

before acquiring 

additional land a 

few miles to the 

southeast. 

Three children 

were born into this 

union: a son, Max, 

and two daughters, 

Eileen and Lucille. 

At the age of eight, Max was killed when 

a hay wagon ran over him. 

A modern house was built on the ranch 

in 1928. This was the same year in which 

Mike played a major role in helping to put 

on the first central South Dakota rodeo. 

He even enjoyed horses and always had 

good breeding in the ones he owned and 

raised. He traveled to Texas and brought 

back some of the first registered Quarter 

Horses to be introduced into the area.

adjacent to that of Mike and Ida. In time, 

management of the ranch was turned over 

to them. Lucille married Orville 

Ellenbecker, and they lived one mile north. 

Harold and Eileen had four children of 

their own: Kelly, Kevin, Holly and Mary 

Ann. Holly married Bill Wright of Parade, 

S.D. and they also have four children: 

Carol, Andy, Kelsie and Nicklaus. Though

live on the ranch. Bill, Holly, and son Andy 

are current managers and co-partners. 

Now three hundred head of Hereford 

and Angus cross cows know this place 

as home, and since its humble beginning 

the acreage has grown to 5,000. Nearly 

800 of those acres are farm ground; 

planted to alfalfa plus wheat, corn and 

oats. Weaned calves are fed through the 

winter using homegrown rations. 

The summer pasture borders the Oahe 

Reservoir, and is split by a state fishing

Things are not all work and no play, 

however, as almost every family member 

enjoys some type of recreation. Harold 

golfs, for example, and Bill and Andy both 

have drag race cars. This past season they 

spent some time “showing their stuff” at 

the Sturgis Dragway. 

When asked what he appreciates most 

about life on the ranch, Andy Wright 

promptly answers “independence.” He 

owns part interest in the cow herd in 

addition to retaining some of his own

R-CALF bought cheap cows in Canada; group’s president says it’s no ‘big deal’ 

WASHINGTON - Members of R-CALF, 

the U.S. ranchers’ group that sued - on 

safety grounds - to keep the border closed 

to Canadian cattle, bought up cheap cows 

in Canada after the ban, the group’s 

president, Leo McDonnell, acknowledged. 

“I don’t see anything ironic about it,” said 

McDonnell, Columbus, Mont. “I didn’t see 

it as a big deal.” There’s a couple of them 

that have bought and fed cattle up there, 

three or four at most,” a figure disputed by a 

Canadian feedlot owner who says it’s higher. 

Three of those U.S. ranchers have been 

significant contributors to R-CALF’s 

litigation fund, McDonnell said, an endeavor 

focused squarely on keeping the border 

shut. 

Some in Canada are furious, saying R- 

CALF members have exploited a crisis they 

helped to create. 

“It’s not illegal but their ethics are 

terrible,” said an Ontario producer. “I’ve had 

enough. I have no use for these guys.” 

Rick Paskal, a feedlot owner in Lethbridge, 

Alta., said group members “recognized an 

opportunity for their own personal economic 

gain. “They were absolutely not concerned 

about food safety.” A federal judge granted

R-CALF’s request last week for a delay in 

resuming the live cattle trade. 

It was supposed to have begun recently 

for the first time in nearly two years after 

some $7 billion Cdn in losses for Canada’s 

industry. 

The American protectionist group has 

opposed reopening the border since it closed 

in May 2003 after Canada’s first case of mad 

cow. 

R-CALF argues that Canadian cattle are 

dangerous to U.S. herds and humans. 

“There’s nothing unique about what 

we’re doing,” said McDonnell, who noted 

that members of pro-trade U.S. ranching 

groups have also bought Canadian cattle. 

A day after the court ruling in favor of R- 

CALF, U.S. senators voted to reject the U.S. 

Agriculture Department’s plan to reopen the 

border to cattle, a largely symbolic move but 

another sign of the intense opposition that’s 

been building. 

Many legislators and U.S. ranchers have 

been much more vocally opposed since the 

last two mad cow cases were discovered in 

Canada in January. One cow sparked

There are still many in the U.S. industry 

who support dropping the ban, especially 

meat-packing companies that face uncertain 

future without enough beef to process. 

U.S. officials had agreed to imports of 

cattle up to 30 months of age, thought to be 

at lowest risk for contracting mad cow, or 

bovine spongiform encephalopathy. 

But it could be months before they make 

a decision on older cattle and beef products 

from older cows.

South Dakota Junior Hereford Association News 

The members of the South Dakota 

Junior Hereford Association met on 

March 20, 2005 at the Swiftel Center in 

Brookings. We discussed the rules for 

Hereford shows and we decided to edit 

some of them. The ones we edited are as 

follows: 1. Heifers and bulls must have 

been born after September 1, 2003 to 

compete. 2. You must have a steer 

certificate in order to show it. 3. Bulls 

must be bred and owned by the Jr. or 

Family. This one was never in the rules 

but has always been enforced. 4. 

HEREFORD HEIFERS NEED TO BE 

REGISTERED IN THE JUNIORS NAME 

OR THE FAMILY NAME! 

We had to move the Field Day to the 

Codington County Extension Complex in 

Watertown because of other conflicts in 

Flandreau. The dates are June 24th and 

25th. The show will not start until 10 a.m. 

on Saturday this year instead of 8. And 

then we will break around noon for a half 

hour to eat lunch and then resume the 

show. We will continue to do the 

achievement award with a prize of $50. 

This is determined by the junior who has 

the most points after all of the contests at 

the Field Day. Seth will hopefully be 

getting your packets about Field Day out 

to everyone the beginning of May. 

We have 6 sponsorships left to buy. 

They are as follows: Reserve Horned 

Heifer, Reserve Cow/calf, Reserve Bull, 

Reserve Sr. Showman, and Reserve Jr. 

Showman. They are $75 a piece and you 

can contact Matt Bischoff if you would

The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association Animal Health Committee 

met in Kadoka, S.D., March 14, 2005 to discuss ideas for prevention and 

containment of trichomoniasis (trich) in South Dakota. 

According to South Dakota Stockgrowers Association Animal Health 

Committee Chairman, Kenny Fox, Belvidere, S.D., the committee talked 

over several ideas before arriving at a resolution they plan to bring before 

the S.D. Animal Industry Board. 

“The committee members had a lot of good ideas. It’s always a 

challenge to find the balance between necessary precautionary 

management and over- regulation, but I think our committee did a good 

job with the resolution we passed, said Fox. “We expect that the Animal 

Industry Board has similar concerns, and will look over a variety of options 

before deciding on policy that is effective and enforceable.” 

Following is the resolution adopted by the South Dakota Stockgrowers 

Association Animal Health Committee. 

Definition: “Trich free” shall be defined as no less than three 

official consecutive negative trich tests. Second, third and any 

following official trich tests shall be conducted at least seven days 

but not more than 21 days after any previous official trich test. 

Be it Resolved: The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association 

Animal Health Committee strongly supports a statewide rule requiring 

that all bulls of breeding age sold for breeding purposes and/or 

imported into South Dakota from outside the state borders shall be 

certified “trich free” no more than 30 days prior to sale or 

importation. 

Exceptions to the rule are: 

1) guaranteed virgin bulls 12 months of age or younger, 

2) transient rodeo or exhibition (show) bulls, which shall have no 

sexual contact with a female bovine and are held in a secure facility 

to prevent such contact (does not include pasture) while in South 

Dakota, 

3) bulls consigned directly to slaughter, 

4) bulls consigned to a feedlot for feeding purposes where they 

will be isolated from all females. Bulls moved from a feedlot must be 

certified trich free unless consigned directly to slaughter. Any positive 

trich bull quarantined in a feedlot shall go directly to slaughter 

from such feedlot. 

According to Fox, trichomoniasis (commonly known as trich) is a 

venereal disease in cattle. The state Animal Industry Board has identified 

trich cattle in at least 24 different South Dakota operations, all on the 

west side of the Missouri River. Fox says that one indicator of trich is an 

unusually high percentage of open cows or a high percentage of abortions 

in the early stages of gestation. He encourages all ranchers to sell their 

open cows “for slaughter only” so as not to take any chances at passing 

the disease on. 

If ranchers discover more open cows than usual, they are best advised 

to contact a veterinarian to test their bulls or sell their bulls and purchase 

virgin bulls, Fox says. For more information about the disease, ranchers 

should contact their local veterinarian or the state veterinarian’s office.
