This is an interesting<br />

business for<br />

us in a number of<br />

ways. We travel a<br />

great deal and in<br />

the course of those<br />

travels get to see a<br />

wide variety of<br />

cattle and meet<br />

some wonderful people. That’s definitely<br />

one of the perks of being in the<br />

business we are in. I think breeders<br />

of yesteryear made more of a point<br />

to travel the country and visit various<br />

different herds and breeders. Of<br />

course with the lack of technology it<br />

was a necessity to do so. Now days<br />

it seems like breeders within a state<br />

often times don’t even get to each<br />

other’s sales. I commend those who<br />

do. Really, it is to your benefit to get<br />

out and see other herds.<br />

You’ve probably heard of thinking<br />

outside the box. I challenge you breeders<br />

to do this when it comes to the<br />

working on sale catalogs and taking<br />

calls from people interested in cattle<br />

on which they are asking our opinion<br />

or need more information.<br />

We have seen a tremendous<br />

upswing this sale season on the<br />

number of people viewing catalogs<br />

on the internet. If you have a<br />

production sale you need to get your<br />

catalog on the internet. We have seen<br />

an increase in traffic over last year<br />

of about 400%! That is taking the<br />

average number of hits last year on<br />

catalogs we put on the internet versus<br />

the catalogs we had on this year<br />

from the same breeders.<br />

Frederickson Honored By Minnesota Livestock Breeders<br />

Mark Frederickson, <strong>Hereford</strong> breeder<br />

from Starbuck, MN was inducted into the<br />

Minnesota Livestock Breeders Hall of<br />

Fame on March 10, <strong>2005</strong> in a ceremony<br />

held at the University of Minnesota, St.<br />

Paul. He was among three honorees at the<br />

event. The others honored at the event<br />

were Chuck Christians, former Extension<br />

specialist and juding team coach and Dr.<br />

Ed Graham (posthumously) who is credited<br />

as being the first person to successfully<br />

A.I.cattle and had the first animal born<br />

from A.I. He also was one of the first researchers<br />

who worked on embryo transfer.<br />

Frederickson, with his wife Mary Kay,<br />

daughter Sarah and son Nate and his wife<br />

Jayna (St. Onge, SD) own and operate<br />

Frederickson <strong>Hereford</strong> Farm (FHF) near<br />

Starbuck, MN. The farm was established<br />

in about 1975. They currently run 100-<br />

125 purebred <strong>Hereford</strong> cows with genetics<br />

tracing back to some of the top Polled<br />

Upper Midwest States Excel in Dams of Distinction<br />

Listings: South Dakota’s Rausch Tops List<br />

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The <strong>America</strong>n<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> Association’s (AHA) Dam of<br />

Distinction award is the standard by which<br />

all <strong>Hereford</strong> cows are judged. Many<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> breeders would be thrilled to have<br />

one female recognized in this capacity. In<br />

2004, Rausch <strong>Hereford</strong>s, Hoven, S.D.,<br />

topped the list with 40 Dams of Distinction.<br />

Rausch’s have had the most Dams of<br />

Distinction for the past 24 years, reflecting<br />

not only quality of cattle, but also<br />

consistency in management.<br />

Rausch <strong>Hereford</strong>s is one of the<br />

operations that led South Dakota to the<br />

top of the state list. With 190 females<br />

qualifying, South Dakota tops Nebraska,<br />

the second state, by 29 cows.<br />

To be honored in 2004, a cow must<br />

have weaned a calf born since Jan. 1, 2003,<br />

produced at least three calves and initially<br />

calved at 30 months of age or less. In<br />

addition, it is required that the interval<br />

between the first and second calves not<br />

exceed 400 days, and that a 370-day<br />

calving interval be maintained after the<br />

second calf.<br />

The program also has requirements<br />

complimentary to the AHA’s Whole Herd<br />

Total Performance Reporting (TPR)<br />

Program. Breeders must submit weaning<br />

records for every calf born before June<br />

30, 2004. The award requires a progeny<br />

average 205-day weaning weight ratio of<br />

at least 105.<br />

The 2004 Dams of Distinction list<br />

includes 1,487 <strong>Hereford</strong> cows from 533<br />

herds in 43 states. Like South Dakota and<br />

Nebraska, other states are recognized<br />

year after year for excellence in females.<br />

Finishing 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th , respectively, for<br />

the second year in a row are Montana,<br />

North Dakota and Kansas.<br />

Contributing to these top rankings year<br />

after year are successful operations such<br />

as Mrnak <strong>Hereford</strong>s, Bowman, N.D.;<br />

Upstream Ranch, Taylor, Neb.; Larry and<br />

Carol Gildemaster, Virgil, S.D.; and<br />

Donald Dubois, Wolsey, S.D.<br />

Setting the standard is no small feat.<br />

Gibson, Wallace, NE. G L1 Domino 206H sold for $5100 to Jensen &<br />

Lehrkamp, Caputa, SD.<br />

Genetic Outreach Program Update<br />

The Genetic Outreach Program, administered and managed by the Kansas<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> Association is thriving and going very well. Over 400 steers are<br />

currently on feed at Royal Beef in Scott City, Kansas. The first group,<br />

started in December have been ultrasounded and are well on their way to<br />

market. The scan data will be used to market many of these cattle with<br />

National Beef and CHB already showing interest. Very little health problems<br />

have been encountered and the cattle are gaining very well with many over<br />

the four pound rate. The second group went on feed in February and have<br />

a good start with very little sickness and good weather for the most part.<br />

The next GOP start date will be in June. Also anytime a producer wants<br />

to start a load of cattle and have them run through GOP, contact the Kansas<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> Association and we will try and work something out to help you.<br />

We intend this to become a “user friendly” operation with the emphasis on<br />

finding and isolating the best <strong>Hereford</strong> cattle to benefit the breeders involved<br />

and their customers. National Beef is really starting to look at these cattle<br />

seriously and we hope the premiums will be forthcoming at market time.<br />

We are also working on source identification with the feedyard and hoping<br />

to get premiums for the participants for their efforts.<br />

Montana Stockgrowers Association<br />

hires Brewster as field representative<br />

The Montana Stockgrowers<br />

Association (MSGA) announced they<br />

have hired Bill Brewster of Townsend<br />

to serve as field representative of the<br />

state’s largest livestock organization.<br />

Steve Pilcher, executive vice president<br />

of MSGA, said Brewster’s duties will<br />

include serving as a liaison between<br />

members and the organization,<br />

promoting MSGA at livestock events<br />

across the state, and communicating the<br />

policy and work of the association to<br />

ranchers and affiliated industry<br />

members.<br />

Brewster’s experience includes<br />

extensive work in journalism and<br />

communications-both in Montana and<br />

nationally, experience with outdoor<br />

recreation and product marketing,<br />

serving as press officer for the 1980<br />

Winter Olympics, training horses, and<br />

owning and managing several different<br />

ranches in Montana.<br />

“Bill brings to this organization a great<br />

background in the livestock industry and<br />

in communications but, more<br />

importantly, he brings a passion for our<br />

industry that I feel will make him a very<br />

effective representative for MSGA,”<br />

said Pilcher.<br />

Brewster said working for MSGA will<br />

be a great opportunity to utilize his<br />

experience and continue his involvement<br />

in Montana’s livestock industry.<br />

“I look forward to getting out in the<br />

country, visiting with ranchers and<br />

hearing their concerns, and bringing their<br />

message back to the organization,” said<br />

Brewster. “Ranching is our state’s<br />

largest and most important industry, and<br />

the Montana Stockgrowers Association<br />

is here to serve as a voice for that<br />

industry.”<br />

his wife, Georgjean, and will work out<br />

The sale grossed $1,016,150, an<br />

increase of nearly 35% over last year. The<br />

sale also saw growth in the averages in<br />

all three breeds; Angus, Charolais and<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong>, an increase of 15%, 26% and<br />

37% respectively.<br />

Purebred and commercial cattlemen<br />

gathered in the Stampede Agriculture<br />

building in person and on-line to purchase<br />

some Alberta bull power.<br />

“The sale was very much a buyers’<br />

market.” claimed Walter Blume of Castor,<br />

Alberta. “I never saw more bull for less<br />

money. The cattle were in nicer condition,<br />

and there were more real good bulls in<br />

my estimation than I’ve ever seen, despite<br />

the smaller numbers.”<br />

Blume has been coming to the Calgary<br />

Bull Sale since 1944 with the exception<br />

of the past two years and has sold several<br />

hundred bulls through the sale from 1950-<br />

2003. He also served on the Alberta Cattle<br />

Breeders Association from 1968-2000.<br />

“There is no future in not bringing<br />

quality.” says Blume who raises purebred<br />

horned <strong>Hereford</strong>s with his brother Allen.<br />

“The competition is extremely keen.<br />

People bring their best bulls to sell here.”<br />

The sale marked the second year in<br />

utilizing TEAM (The Electronic Auction<br />

Market) to market bulls in real-time online<br />

bidding in addition to live bidding.<br />

Over 1,000,000 hits from fourteen<br />

countries were received throughout the<br />

week of the Calgary Bull Sale. Thursday,<br />

March 3 rd was the busiest day in TEAM<br />

history with 300,000 hits. On-line sales<br />

were up 50% with 3 Angus, 2 Charolais<br />

and one <strong>Hereford</strong> selling on-line to Alberta<br />

We’re also seeing breeders use the<br />

internet more in making breeding decisions<br />

for their specific program. I will have to<br />

admit that after awhile I do treat a lot of<br />

advertising coming over the internet to my<br />

email address like I do advertisements we<br />

get in the mail — I delete it without even<br />

looking at it unless I know the breeder.<br />

Oh well, I guess I’m getting used to junk<br />

mail over the internet just like we receive<br />

over the fax or in our post office mail<br />

box. The nicest thing about internet junk<br />

mail is that I can usually request to stop<br />

receiving it.<br />

Art Handel and I visited and had supper<br />

with four very nice people from the U.K.<br />

in January the night before the Van<br />

Newkirk sale in Nebraska. Just a week<br />

or two ago I received a package in the<br />

mail from them with a nice letter, a great<br />

looking tie, the U.K.’s <strong>Hereford</strong> Breed<br />

Journal, and an apron to be used when<br />

grilling those good Ridgefield steaks. I<br />

think I’ll just hang the apron on the wall<br />

to remind me of friends “across the<br />

pond.”<br />

Region, resigned and took on a new job<br />

with the Dakota Farmer, a publication that<br />

is concentrated in the north central states<br />

such as the Dakotas, Minnesota, etc.<br />

Chris will be a field rep with<br />

responsibilities primarily in North and<br />

South Dakota. Chris and I flew to the Mill<br />

Creek sale at Manhattan, KS a few weeks<br />

ago, probably one we won’t forget. From<br />

the time I left home, picked up Chris at<br />

Pierre and continued to Manhattan, it took<br />

us 2-1/2 hours. Coming home it took us<br />

a little over 4-1/2 hours! Kinda windy that<br />

day but Chris and I both agreed it was a<br />

lot easier and more enjoyable than driving<br />

the same distance. Good luck Chris with<br />

your new job.<br />

The two associations in Nebraska have<br />

combined recently. Ron & Kay Morgan<br />

were the managers of the Nebraska<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> Association and Joe Brockman<br />

was the manager of the Nebraska Polled<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> Association. Now that the two<br />

associations are one (the New Nebraska<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> Association) both managers have<br />

decided to hang it up. Both Morgans and<br />

Brockmans were great to work with<br />

gathering information needed for <strong>Hereford</strong><br />

<strong>America</strong>. We really appreciate the efforts<br />

these two families have contributed over<br />

the years to their respective state<br />

associations and hope to have more on<br />

their contributions in a future issue.<br />

You might recall in the last issue of<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> <strong>America</strong> I mentioned an<br />

opportunity that we at <strong>Hereford</strong> <strong>America</strong><br />

have extended to state <strong>Hereford</strong><br />

associations. The North Dakota <strong>Hereford</strong><br />

Association and the Kansas <strong>Hereford</strong><br />

Association took advantage of our offer<br />

and they’re already reaping rewards!<br />

North Dakota received a check for $145<br />

and Kansas received a check for $175. If<br />

We feel like we’re contributing to our<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> industry immensely by helping<br />

be more than happy to include it in our<br />

“Letters to the Editor.” There are some<br />

basic guidelines and stipulations we use<br />

but we’ve not turned one down yet.<br />

One last thing, I got home last night<br />

from a new <strong>Hereford</strong> sale in Montana.<br />

Three young breeders went together to<br />

hold the largest Polled <strong>Hereford</strong> sale in<br />

Montana. It is really encouraging to see<br />

the next generation step up to the plate<br />

and take their place in the <strong>Hereford</strong><br />

business. Congratulations to Bernie &<br />

Stacie Buzanowski, Cody & Shad Haber<br />

and Ken & Shannon Jackson on holding<br />

their first annual production sale!<br />

cattle business. There are a number of<br />

ways to think outside the box. The whole<br />

point is to look at things in a different way<br />

than you normally would for the purpose<br />

of coming up with new ideas and ways<br />

of doing things that would benefit your<br />

business and breeding program. If you’re<br />

a Polled <strong>Hereford</strong> breeder who never looks<br />

at horned cattle, go look at several horned<br />

herds. Likewise, if you’re a horned breeder<br />

who never looks at Polled cattle, you need<br />

to go take a look. A lot has changed in<br />

both horned and polled cattle over the last<br />

5-10 years. When I talk to a breeder who<br />

is adamantly against either horned or<br />

polled cattle it just amazes me because I<br />

know most haven’t even looked at the<br />

cattle they are criticizing — for quite some<br />

time. When you’re world is small, you<br />

really limit yourself. It wouldn’t hurt to<br />

look at other breeds either and see how<br />

they are handling certain situations. Infighting<br />

is not doing our breed any good.<br />

Over the past week or two we’ve gotten<br />

some heat over a couple ads that ran<br />

in our last issue. (Marc thinks maybe it’s<br />

a combination of people being stressed out<br />

over taxes and calving!) Those of you who<br />

read our paper know we aren’t into censorship.<br />

We generally allow people their<br />

opinions in their ads and letters. You should<br />

also know that we don’t always share the<br />

opinions in all these ads or letters. That is<br />

true in almost any <strong>America</strong>n trade publication<br />

that is not published by a specific<br />

organization. We have also allowed Angus<br />

advertising in our paper for quite some<br />

time so this isn’t a new thing. Check your<br />

back issues. We value freedom of the<br />

press which is certainly evident in our editorials.<br />

This is one of the components that<br />

makes our newspaper so popular with our<br />

readership and advertisers.<br />

On another subject, I would like to<br />

congratulate my Dad, Byron Bayers, on<br />

receiving the Wright Brothers Master Pilot<br />

Award from the FAA at the recent<br />

Montana Aeronautics Association<br />

Convention. This is quite an honor and<br />

achievement. He was one of two people<br />

selected for the award this year. What a<br />

tremendous pilot who has flown over<br />

10,000 hours. What a nice award to<br />

recognize his achievements and<br />

dedication.<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong>s and airplanes have been a part<br />

of my entire life, usually both at the same<br />

time. I don’t think that will change.<br />

A friend e-mailed me several really good<br />

quotes this week. I think the following is<br />

a good one by Ronald Reagan:<br />

“No arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals<br />

of the world, is so formidable as the will<br />

and moral courage of free men and<br />

women.<br />

Brothers “Master Pilot Award<br />

Byron Bayers of Twin Bridges, MT was<br />

awarded the Wright Brothers “Master<br />

Pilot Award” at the recent Montana<br />

Aviation Conference held in Butte, MT<br />

March 3-4-5. The award is given by the<br />

Federal Aviation Agency of the U.S.<br />

Department of Transportation. The award<br />

recognizes the efforts of pilots who have<br />

followed and continue to follow the<br />

precaution and awareness of safe flight<br />

operations. Most of all the FAA recognizes<br />

pilots who have contributed and<br />

maintained safe flight operations for 50<br />

or more consecutive years of piloting.<br />

Bayers, who has a commercial,<br />

instrument and multi engine ratings, has<br />

flown over one and one half million miles<br />

without injury to pilot or passenger.<br />

The award is named in honor of Wilbur<br />

and Orville Wright, two early Aviation<br />

pioneers.<br />

Letters to the Editors...<br />

Dear <strong>Hereford</strong> <strong>America</strong>:<br />

As I was reading the March <strong>Hereford</strong><br />

<strong>America</strong>, I got to an ad near the back of<br />

the publication that caught my eye. It was<br />

a full page using black and black whiteface<br />

individuals to promote an outstanding<br />

combination utilizing planned hybrid vigor<br />

of the Angus-<strong>Hereford</strong> cross. “Way to<br />

go!” I thought and looked to see that it<br />

was from Oleen Bros. of Dwight, Kansas.<br />

I looked a little further to read some of<br />

the copy blocks and one, quite frankly,<br />

took my breath away (and not in a positive<br />

manner). The breeder extolled on what<br />

he felt were major differences in polled<br />

and horned cattle, with polled being<br />

inferior. For me personally, this took<br />

away any credibility of the breeding<br />

program or the black whiteface emphasis<br />

for which this breeder had invested his<br />

advertising dollars and diminished my<br />

opinion of them as progressive breeders.<br />

That same day, I was reading <strong>Hereford</strong><br />

World and skimmed the schedule of the<br />

July PRIDE Conference. What do you<br />

know, the above breeder is host of an<br />

evening event at their ranch. You can<br />

imagine my thoughts now – deteriorating<br />

faster!<br />

I have been involved in our breed since<br />

the late 1950’s as a very young person,<br />

so I have some knowledge of the<br />

“relationship” issues we faced in the two<br />

sectors (horned and polled). Today, with<br />

the modern, new-generation breeders<br />

united in one national association, there is<br />

no room for division and divisiveness.<br />

I hope that the PRIDE event is<br />

successful in the many ways it is designed<br />

to be and that the youth and adults that<br />

attend get excited about our breed<br />

organization and work to<br />

advance it as we all should.<br />

I close with the thought<br />

that keeps running through<br />

my mind, which my<br />

parents told us and we<br />

hopefully have passed on to our kids: “If<br />

you don’t have something good to say<br />

about someone or something, don’t say<br />

anything at all.”<br />

Belfield’s <strong>April</strong> and Jake Baumgarten<br />

spend countless hours preparing their<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> animals for show competition.<br />

Their hard work was rewarded during the<br />

North Dakota State Fair in Minot when<br />

they each won top awards.<br />

<strong>April</strong> won a champion ribbon, while Jake<br />

won a reserve champion ribbon in the 4-<br />

H <strong>Hereford</strong> beef show. The ribbons are<br />

added to their collection of other awards<br />

with two heifers and one steer, Goldie,<br />

Princess and Buddrow.<br />

Buddrow was named Grand Champion<br />

steer at the North Dakota Junior Point<br />

Show in Minot, the North Dakota Junior<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> Field Day in Williston and the<br />

Stark-Billings Achievement Days. The<br />

steer also received Reserve Champion<br />

honors at the Bowman County Fair.<br />

Goldie picked up the Reserve Champion<br />

heifer ribbon. Princess was named Reserve<br />

Champion heifer at the Junior Beef<br />

Expo in Williston.<br />

<strong>April</strong> is a sophomore and Jake is a freshman<br />

at Belfield High School. Their parents<br />

are Rolland and Tama Baumgarten,<br />

who raise registered <strong>Hereford</strong> beef on a<br />

farm nine miles southeast of Belfield.<br />

The students are the third generation of<br />

Baumgartens to compete at cattle shows.<br />

They watched their parents show animals<br />

and learned more tips through membership<br />

in the Silver Spurs 4-H Club.<br />

“Getting a champion to state, you<br />

have to feed a certain diet. We walk<br />

them about one or two miles every<br />

day to keep them in shape. We want<br />

their muscles to stay firm,” said<br />

<strong>April</strong>.<br />

She said the judges look for definition<br />

of muscle, structural correctness,<br />

how they walk and stand<br />

and overall appearance.<br />

“You have to be a good showman<br />

to win,” she said.<br />

The younger Baumgartens entered<br />

state fair competition for the<br />

first time this year. They enjoyed<br />

the competition and learned other<br />

tips for producing a winner.<br />

“It’s fun. I like to travel to shows<br />

around the state,” she said.<br />

Jake Baumgarten has competed<br />

since age 9. As a 4-H member he’s<br />

interested in woodworking, horticulture<br />

and grain production. He<br />

also plays high school football. Of<br />

all the activities, showing <strong>Hereford</strong>s for<br />

competition is his favorite activity.<br />

“I like going out there. When you win it<br />

feels good,” he said.<br />

Tama Baumgarten was delighted about<br />

their state fair success.<br />

“They go out every single morning to<br />

feed the animals. They rinse and brush<br />

them. They tie them up under fans all day<br />

to make sure their hair grows,” she said.<br />

“In the evening, they feed them again.<br />

They rinse and brush them. They walk<br />

them about a mile every day. This starts<br />

in <strong>April</strong> and goes until the fair.”<br />

Tama added, “You have to put in time<br />

to make their hair grow. The other animals<br />

are doing the same thing. It’s a hard<br />

thing in the summer. People stick a lot of<br />

money into their animals. People put their<br />

steers into coolers. Our kids have to use a<br />

hose and brush.”<br />

Rolland and Tama said their animals are<br />

all home raised. They have competed at<br />

Denver’s National Western Stock Show<br />

six of the past seven years. One year they<br />

won first place with a pen of yearling bulls.<br />

“I tell the kids to watch what other<br />

people are doing. You learn and experiment<br />

with different things to make them<br />

look right,” she said.<br />

Tama said children learn responsibility<br />

when they show animals. “If you don’t<br />

take care of the animal they get sick. They<br />

learn sportsmanship, too. They learn<br />

they’re not always going to win,” she said.<br />

The family is already looking at the<br />

spring crop of heifers for the upcoming<br />

year. The first show is the October Ag<br />

Expo in Dickinson. It’s the animal’s first<br />

appearance in a show ring. By next spring,<br />

they walk the ring without any sign of<br />

nervousness.<br />

“The steer was so relaxed, so proud of<br />

himself. He walked with his head up high.<br />

He was easy to show. That doesn’t happen<br />

that often,” she said.<br />

Tama said any prize money is used to<br />

cover expenses. <strong>April</strong> and Jake each purchased<br />

a heifer last fall. The Baumgartens<br />

are partial to <strong>Hereford</strong>s.<br />

“<strong>Hereford</strong>s have always been a breed<br />

that’s on top. The breed adds pounds for<br />

you. You don’t need black to sell in the<br />

ring,” she said.<br />

Tama said the showing of animals is not<br />

a profitable venture. “It’s more of an advertising<br />

tool to show your cattle. People<br />

get an idea of what you’re trying to produce,”<br />

she said. “It’s not for the money.<br />

Basically, its to be with our family. We do<br />

everything together when we show<br />

cattle.”<br />

The Baumgartens are members of the<br />

North Dakota <strong>Hereford</strong> Association,<br />

which helps to market the breed. They<br />

also hold a production sale in February in<br />

conjunction with Troy and Peg Perman.<br />

Dale McPherson was born in 1929 to<br />

Gene and Ida McPherson and grew up<br />

26 miles east of Sturgis on a 20,000 acre<br />

plus Pioneer Black Hills <strong>Hereford</strong> Ranch.<br />

After attending college for a time and<br />

spending two years in the army, Dale<br />

He was the first auctioneer to do a real<br />

estate auction on the internet in Western<br />

South Dakota. McPherson Auction<br />

Company continues to be the premier<br />

auction service for farm and ranch, real<br />

estate, and they’ve even handled a gun<br />

show every now and then.<br />

Dale is known for being active in<br />

community organizations including the<br />

Rapid City Chamber of Commerce,<br />

Central States Fair, Western Junior<br />

Livestock Association, the Old Timers<br />

Cowboy Breakfast and St. Jude’s<br />

Research Hospital.<br />

He was recently inducted into the South<br />

Dakota Auctioneers Association Hall of<br />

Fame.<br />

Now sons Kevin and Todd are involved<br />

in auctioneering, but that hasn’t slowed<br />

Dale from being involved in area auctions.<br />

His long term support to the agriculture<br />

and business community is why he has<br />

been chosen as this year Black Hills<br />

Stockshow Agri-businessman of the Year.<br />

Brennan for<br />

thirty years.<br />

Dick attended high school in Rapid City<br />

and received a degree in civil engineering<br />

at the South Dakota School of Mines and<br />

Technology.<br />

Dick married Pearl Sanders in 1943. She<br />

grew up on a ranch near Pactola and also<br />

graduated from Rapid City High School<br />

and the Black Hills Commercial College.<br />

The couple lived and worked in Seattle<br />

for a time before returning to the Black<br />

Hills where Dick entered into partnership<br />

with his father and brother.<br />

Dick established the Golden Rule<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> Ranch in Rapid Valley and later<br />

acquired the Sanders Ranch at Pactola.<br />

The Taylor’s have been very active in<br />

the Stock Growers for over fifty years<br />

and have held offices or participated in<br />

other organizations including; the Black<br />

Hills <strong>Hereford</strong> Breeder’s Association,<br />

Black Hills Exposition and Central States<br />

Fair<br />

Pearl kept busy with ranch activities,<br />

helping their three daughters with 4-H<br />

projects and working at Rushmore Mutual<br />

Insurance. In 1994 she was honored by<br />

the South Dakota Stockgrowers and given<br />

a South Dakota CattleWomen award.<br />

In 1990 Dick & Pearl retired, sold off<br />

the cows and all but eighty acres where<br />

they now live and keep busy with their<br />

grandkids.<br />

The Taylor’s dedication and<br />

involvement in the South Dakota<br />

Stockgrowers Association, The Black<br />

Hills Stock Show, Central State’s Fair and<br />

other community committees has<br />

rightfully earned them the spot in the <strong>2005</strong><br />

Black Hills Stock Show Hall of Fame.<br />

Kirk grew up on his parent’s ranch near<br />

Elm Springs with five older sisters and a<br />

younger brother. He graduated from<br />

Sturgis High School in 1958 and returned<br />

to the family ranch and continued<br />

ranching with<br />

his father and<br />

brother-inlaw.<br />

married<br />

Kathy Jensen,<br />

and decided<br />

to<br />

further his<br />

education<br />

South Dakota<br />

State University where he received his Ag<br />

Business degree in 1970.<br />

In 1973 they purchased a ranch 28 miles<br />

northeast of Wall, where they continue to<br />

run a cow/calf/yearling operation for the<br />

past 31 years. His son Spencer and<br />

daughter-in-law, Paige, are now actively<br />

involved in the operation of the ranch as<br />

well.<br />

COD Ranch: Making a Life on the Plains of South Dakota<br />

When my friend Barry Ellenbecker<br />

recently informed me of the name of the<br />

COD Ranch near Gettysburg, S.D., my<br />

first reaction was that my leg was being<br />

pulled a little bit. I’d always thought that<br />

COD stood for “cash on delivery” and<br />

Through his children, Kirk became<br />

He has been a member of the<br />

Society for Range Management for<br />

over 30 years, and received the<br />

Range Man of the Year award in<br />

1983.<br />

Because of Kirk’s admirable work<br />

ethic, stewardship of community and<br />

land and dedication to rural South<br />

Dakota that the BHSS honor him as<br />

the <strong>2005</strong> Black Hills Stock Show<br />

not one thing else. Barry happens to be a<br />

grandson of the man who homesteaded<br />

the property, and has never been above a<br />

good joke now and then. In any case, I<br />

was finally convinced that this was indeed<br />

the ranch’s name as well as the design of<br />

its cattle brand.<br />

In 1909, Lawrence W. (Mike) Herron<br />

homesteaded in this area, primarily raising<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> cattle. He married Ida Huyck<br />

(pronounced “hike”) of nearby Lebanon<br />

in October on 1913. The couple lived on<br />

the homestead for<br />

the next six years<br />

before acquiring<br />

additional land a<br />

few miles to the<br />

southeast.<br />

Three children<br />

were born into this<br />

union: a son, Max,<br />

and two daughters,<br />

Eileen and Lucille.<br />

At the age of eight, Max was killed when<br />

a hay wagon ran over him.<br />

A modern house was built on the ranch<br />

in 1928. This was the same year in which<br />

Mike played a major role in helping to put<br />

on the first central South Dakota rodeo.<br />

He even enjoyed horses and always had<br />

good breeding in the ones he owned and<br />

raised. He traveled to Texas and brought<br />

back some of the first registered Quarter<br />

Horses to be introduced into the area.<br />

and they built a house in 1952 which was<br />

adjacent to that of Mike and Ida. In time,<br />

management of the ranch was turned over<br />

to them. Lucille married Orville<br />

Ellenbecker, and they lived one mile north.<br />

Harold and Eileen had four children of<br />

their own: Kelly, Kevin, Holly and Mary<br />

live on the ranch. Bill, Holly, and son Andy<br />

are current managers and co-partners.<br />

Now three hundred head of <strong>Hereford</strong><br />

and Angus cross cows know this place<br />

as home, and since its humble beginning<br />

the acreage has grown to 5,000. Nearly<br />

800 of those acres are farm ground;<br />

planted to alfalfa plus wheat, corn and<br />

oats. Weaned calves are fed through the<br />

winter using homegrown rations.<br />

The summer pasture borders the Oahe<br />

Reservoir, and is split by a state fishing<br />

dock and its public access road. The animals, so it appears that he will solidify the next generation’s role<br />

pasture has excellent grass, and it is in the COD Ranch heritage.<br />

Things are not all work and no play,<br />

however, as almost every family member<br />

enjoys some type of recreation. Harold<br />

golfs, for example, and Bill and Andy both<br />

have drag race cars. This past season they<br />

spent some time “showing their stuff” at<br />

the Sturgis Dragway.<br />

When asked what he appreciates most<br />

about life on the ranch, Andy Wright<br />

promptly answers “independence.” He<br />

owns part interest in the cow herd in<br />

addition to retaining some of his own<br />

WASHINGTON - Members of R-CALF,<br />

the U.S. ranchers’ group that sued - on<br />

safety grounds - to keep the border closed<br />

to Canadian cattle, bought up cheap cows<br />

in Canada after the ban, the group’s<br />

president, Leo McDonnell, acknowledged.<br />

“I don’t see anything ironic about it,” said<br />

McDonnell, Columbus, Mont. “I didn’t see<br />

it as a big deal.” There’s a couple of them<br />

that have bought and fed cattle up there,<br />

three or four at most,” a figure disputed by a<br />

Canadian feedlot owner who says it’s higher.<br />

Three of those U.S. ranchers have been<br />

significant contributors to R-CALF’s<br />

litigation fund, McDonnell said, an endeavor<br />

focused squarely on keeping the border<br />

shut.<br />

Some in Canada are furious, saying R-<br />

CALF members have exploited a crisis they<br />

helped to create.<br />

“It’s not illegal but their ethics are<br />

terrible,” said an Ontario producer. “I’ve had<br />

enough. I have no use for these guys.”<br />

Rick Paskal, a feedlot owner in Lethbridge,<br />

Alta., said group members “recognized an<br />

opportunity for their own personal economic<br />

gain. “They were absolutely not concerned<br />

about food safety.” A federal judge granted<br />

R-CALF’s request last week for a delay in<br />

resuming the live cattle trade.<br />

It was supposed to have begun recently<br />

for the first time in nearly two years after<br />

some $7 billion Cdn in losses for Canada’s<br />

industry.<br />

The <strong>America</strong>n protectionist group has<br />

opposed reopening the border since it closed<br />

in <strong>May</strong> 2003 after Canada’s first case of mad<br />

cow.<br />

R-CALF argues that Canadian cattle are<br />

dangerous to U.S. herds and humans.<br />

“There’s nothing unique about what<br />

we’re doing,” said McDonnell, who noted<br />

that members of pro-trade U.S. ranching<br />

groups have also bought Canadian cattle.<br />

A day after the court ruling in favor of R-<br />

CALF, U.S. senators voted to reject the U.S.<br />

Agriculture Department’s plan to reopen the<br />

border to cattle, a largely symbolic move but<br />

another sign of the intense opposition that’s<br />

been building.<br />

Many legislators and U.S. ranchers have<br />

been much more vocally opposed since the<br />

last two mad cow cases were discovered in<br />

Canada in January. One cow sparked<br />

spread of the deadly disease.<br />

There are still many in the U.S. industry<br />

who support dropping the ban, especially<br />

meat-packing companies that face uncertain<br />

future without enough beef to process.<br />

U.S. officials had agreed to imports of<br />

cattle up to 30 months of age, thought to be<br />

at lowest risk for contracting mad cow, or<br />

bovine spongiform encephalopathy.<br />

But it could be months before they make<br />

a decision on older cattle and beef products<br />

The members of the South Dakota<br />

Junior <strong>Hereford</strong> Association met on<br />

March 20, <strong>2005</strong> at the Swiftel Center in<br />

Brookings. We discussed the rules for<br />

<strong>Hereford</strong> shows and we decided to edit<br />

some of them. The ones we edited are as<br />

follows: 1. Heifers and bulls must have<br />

been born after September 1, 2003 to<br />

compete. 2. You must have a steer<br />

certificate in order to show it. 3. Bulls<br />

must be bred and owned by the Jr. or<br />

Family. This one was never in the rules<br />

but has always been enforced. 4.<br />

REGISTERED IN THE JUNIORS NAME<br />

OR THE FAMILY NAME!<br />

We had to move the Field Day to the<br />

Codington County Extension Complex in<br />

Watertown because of other conflicts in<br />

Flandreau. The dates are June 24th and<br />

25th. The show will not start until 10 a.m.<br />

on Saturday this year instead of 8. And<br />

then we will break around noon for a half<br />

hour to eat lunch and then resume the<br />

show. We will continue to do the<br />

achievement award with a prize of $50.<br />

This is determined by the junior who has<br />

the most points after all of the contests at<br />

the Field Day. Seth will hopefully be<br />

getting your packets about Field Day out<br />

to everyone the beginning of <strong>May</strong>.<br />

We have 6 sponsorships left to buy.<br />

The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association Animal Health Committee<br />

met in Kadoka, S.D., March 14, <strong>2005</strong> to discuss ideas for prevention and<br />

containment of trichomoniasis (trich) in South Dakota.<br />

According to South Dakota Stockgrowers Association Animal Health<br />

Committee Chairman, Kenny Fox, Belvidere, S.D., the committee talked<br />

over several ideas before arriving at a resolution they plan to bring before<br />

the S.D. Animal Industry Board.<br />

“The committee members had a lot of good ideas. It’s always a<br />

challenge to find the balance between necessary precautionary<br />

management and over- regulation, but I think our committee did a good<br />

job with the resolution we passed, said Fox. “We expect that the Animal<br />

Industry Board has similar concerns, and will look over a variety of options<br />

before deciding on policy that is effective and enforceable.”<br />

Following is the resolution adopted by the South Dakota Stockgrowers<br />

Association Animal Health Committee.<br />

Definition: “Trich free” shall be defined as no less than three<br />

official consecutive negative trich tests. Second, third and any<br />

following official trich tests shall be conducted at least seven days<br />

but not more than 21 days after any previous official trich test.<br />

Be it Resolved: The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association<br />

Animal Health Committee strongly supports a statewide rule requiring<br />

that all bulls of breeding age sold for breeding purposes and/or<br />

imported into South Dakota from outside the state borders shall be<br />

certified “trich free” no more than 30 days prior to sale or<br />

importation.<br />

Exceptions to the rule are:<br />

1) guaranteed virgin bulls 12 months of age or younger,<br />

2) transient rodeo or exhibition (show) bulls, which shall have no<br />

sexual contact with a female bovine and are held in a secure facility<br />

to prevent such contact (does not include pasture) while in South<br />

Dakota,<br />

3) bulls consigned directly to slaughter,<br />

4) bulls consigned to a feedlot for feeding purposes where they<br />

will be isolated from all females. Bulls moved from a feedlot must be<br />

certified trich free unless consigned directly to slaughter. Any positive<br />

trich bull quarantined in a feedlot shall go directly to slaughter<br />

from such feedlot.<br />

According to Fox, trichomoniasis (commonly known as trich) is a<br />

venereal disease in cattle. The state Animal Industry Board has identified<br />

trich cattle in at least 24 different South Dakota operations, all on the<br />

west side of the Missouri River. Fox says that one indicator of trich is an<br />

unusually high percentage of open cows or a high percentage of abortions<br />

in the early stages of gestation. He encourages all ranchers to sell their<br />

open cows “for slaughter only” so as not to take any chances at passing<br />

the disease on.<br />

If ranchers discover more open cows than usual, they are best advised<br />

to contact a veterinarian to test their bulls or sell their bulls and purchase<br />

virgin bulls, Fox says. For more information about the disease, ranchers<br />

should contact their local veterinarian or the state veterinarian’s office.
