I have been involved 

for over 

60 years. Many

changes have 

taken place in that time and many 

great and some unusual events have 

occurred in those years, but the pace 

Hereford sales have taken in the last 

year are just unbelievable to me. In 

2011 the sales pace is like the space 

ship going to the moon. Like I have 

told Marc and Jill, I am very happy 

for the breeders who are receiving 

these premium prices but on the 

other hand what are we paying for 

the things that we work with. Look 

at a tractor price, a pickup, fuel, and 

if you have young people, the price 

of college. Maybe the commercial 

people really need $2.00 per pound 

for the steers! With the price of 

corn and fuel rising like it is, who 

knows what is a fair price for bulls 

and heifers. 

Get ready for the next thing — genomics. 

What is this you say? Some 

people are knowledge about the 

subject, I know the AHA board and 

the staff is working on genomics, 

but what is it? Genomics-enhanced 

EPDs are produced using DNA and 

traditional (performance records, 

pedigrees) information sources, 

according to a recent article in Beef 

magazine. 

Webster lists genome as one complete 

haploid set of chromosomes 

of an organism. So now you know? 

The American Angus Association 

and IGENITY recently reached an 

agreement to calculate EPDs for

It takes perseverance and hours and 

hours of unbelievable dedication to 

keep a ranch in working order for more 

than 100 years but that’s just what the 

Jay C. (J.C.) and Mary Berry Family 

of Cheyenne, WY have accomplished. 

With the fourth generation now involved 

in the ranch, “The Berry’s” 

were honored at Wyoming’s Fifth Annual 

Centennial Farm and Ranch Ceremony, 

August 21, 2010 in Douglas. 

The honor was bestowed on the Berry 

Ranch by the Wyoming State Historic 

Preservation Office. 

“It was an honor to receive the recognition 

of what my grandparents began 

in 1910,” Jay Berry says. “It was a 

special day for our family and impressive 

that Wyoming’s two Senators, one 

Representative and Governor were all

In November George Ochsner was 

recognized for his family’s quality 

Hereford cattle with an induction into 

the Hereford Hall of Fame. 

The ceremony was held in Kansas 

City, Mo. at the American Hereford 

Association’s (AHA) annual meeting 

during the American Royal. 

“We went to the Hereford show at the 

American Royal, and it was a big show 

that took all day, and the Grand Champion 

Hereford bull was out of a bull we 

sold. It was really neat to receive such 

present at the

multiple carcass traits using the AAA 

data. The American Hereford Association 

will undoubtedly follow as soon as 

they are able. This is an interesting arrangement. 

A breed association (AAA) 

working with a private entity to market 

a product to enhance a breed’s records? 

Of course with CUP we are doing it 

now. Will AHA try to make the same arrangement? 

I have been told by reliable 

sources that the Angus DNA test done 

by IGENITY will not work the same on 

Herefords as it does on Angus. It would 

be very interesting to really know. 

I called Mike MacNeil, noted geneticist, 

of the Fort Keogh Livestock and 

Range and Research Laboratory and got 

some general information from him on 

the subject. I can always depend on Mike 

to give me the “straight” stuff on genetics 

and I am grateful for that information. 

As the Hereford take on this issue gets 

closer to reality, Hereford America will 

keep you informed but I am quite sure of 

these facts at this time. 

The DNA testing program will make 

our current EPDs more accurate and will 

expand other information for the breeder, 

purebred or commercial. Probably because 

of cost, (my thought) the breed may 

have two sets of EPDs, one with DNA 

data included and one without. Costs and 

the GENETIC ORGANIZATION that 

the breed association selects, will have a 

final say in what costs you, the breeder, 

to absorb to get the data. Some people 

in the organization that interprets our 

ultrasound have released some information 

that would indicate to me that they 

will be highly involved in the future of 

this project, or at least will concur with it. 

This is some of the high technology we 

will be subject to in the next few years. 

The February issue of The Furrow (the 

John Deere magazine) states that agriculture 

will be serving nine billion people by 

2050. Of course most of us will be gone 

by then but it shows you the challenge the 

people who produce the food will have in 

front of them. The technology that I mentioned 

above in the cattle will have the 

same effect on our farming practices. I 

have made the statement many times that 

our agriculture people in North America 

can probably feed much of the world, we 

just need to be paid for it! 

I just received a call from Bud Snidow. 

I admire Bud as highly as anyone that 

ever worked for the American Hereford 

Association. Bud has also become, 

through the years, probably the greatest 

artist of Hereford cattle. We have four 

of his paintings in our house and they 

are greatly admired. Bud still has his 

great humor and every time he calls he 

tells me a true story about his life. This 

time it was a story about his military 

time as an airplane mechanic in Alaska. 

Bud said he enjoyed my Hungary story 

as he was involved at the time with the 

arrangements and the trip, in the Kansas 

City office of the AHA. What Bud has 

done for the Hereford breed for service 

is unmatched!

Frank Borman knows plenty about rocket science. 

As an American hero and astronaut, he was aboard 

space flights on Gemini 7 and Apollo 8. But the Borman 

family’s Circle B Ranch also has plenty of good cow 

sense. 

Back when some ranchers were stuck on straight 

Angus cattle, Circle B started breeding black cows to 

Feddes Hereford bulls. Responsive to health-conscious 

consumers, Circle B decided to produce hormone-free, 

all-natural beef. Without implants to boost growth and 

muscle, Circle B needed bred-in growth and natural 

muscling. Their cow sense has been richly rewarded. 

Each year Circle B sells thousands of calves at markettopping 

prices. 

It is gratifying for the Feddes family to see the 

success of the Borman family and Circle B’s operation.

Recently a front-page article in Hereford World 

reported on Circle B’s success using our Hereford bulls 

on thousands of black cows each year. Here are a few 

quotes from Fred Borman and the Circle B team. 

• Trouble-free calving: “They’ve got really good birth 

weights. The cows calve in the hills, and they’re pretty 

much on their own, so it’s important to have a calf that 

jumps up and goes right away. We shoot for around 80 

pounds at birth.” 

• 50 pounds more per calf weaned: “We looked at 

other breeds, but we like the Hereford bulls better. They 

made a dramatic difference in the calves. Since we 

started using Hereford bulls, we have bigger, longer, 

stouter calves that weigh more and are healthier. The 

cross has given us about 50 pounds more per calf. 

They gain well, they don’t get sick, and they finish great. 

The guys that finish them just love them.” 

• Good disposition: “I think the improved health comes 

somewhat from that calm disposition.” 

• $100 more at finish: “Our verified natural beef has 

been shown through third-party verification to bring a 

$100 or more per-head advantage for our buyers.”

2010 Breeder of 

the Year Award 

— Tegtmeier Polled Herefords — 

Tegtmeier Polled Herefords was 

founded in 1949 with the original purchase 

of females by Clarence Tegtmeier. 

Early purchases were from 

Gene and Jim Rowland, Frank and Les 

Robinson, State Line Farms and Bar 

11 Polled Herefords. Other herds that 

subsequently influenced the Tegtmeier 

herd were Orvil Kuhlman and Sons, 

CK Mousel and Blanchard and Lindgren. 

Through the 1950s bulls and females 

from the Clarence Tegtmeier 

and Sons herd were marketed to area 

farmers and ranchers by private treaty 

and consignment sales. The first of 50 

consecutive production sales was held 

in 1961 and included 85 bulls and registered 

females and 175 commercial 

steers and heifers. The following year 

a joint production sale was held with a 

neighboring breeder. In 1963, and for 

many years thereafter, Clarence, his 

brother Oscar, and cousin Erich held 

a combined production sale. Erich dispersed 

his herd in 1975 due to health 

reasons, but Oscar continued to contribute 

to the annual sales until 1995. 

Clarence passed away suddenly 

while attending the National Polled 

Hereford Show in 1983. Since then 

Clarence’s three sons Russ, Roger and 

Ron have continued with the herd and 

the annual sales. Ron has focused on 

the farming activities while Russ and 

Roger work with the registered herd 

management. 

Throughout the life of the herd it 

has been recognized as a dependable 

source of excellent cattle from a 

family that stands behind their cattle. 

Evidence of this is the fact that cattle 

and semen have sold to 28 states and 

four foreign countries and have made 

many friendships for the Tegtmeiers. 

Tegtmeier cattle have had a positive 

influence on numerous herds and the 

CT prefix shows up prominently in the 

pedigrees of many cattle. 

Russ has also been very active in the 

state breed association. He served on 

the NPHA Board for 10 years and led 

the association as president in 1993. 

They have hosted the state tour eight 

times and were on the World Hereford 

Conference Tour in 1996. 

In addition to their own production 

sale, the Tegtmeier herd has been well 

represented in the female division of 

the Cattlemen’s Classic at Kearney. 

Five times Tegtmeiers took the Grand 

Champion female award and four times 

they garnered the Reserve Champion 

Female award. 

A number of prominent bulls have 

been influential in the Tegtmeier breeding 

program through both natural 

and A.I. service. Captain R 847 was 

a bull bred by Tegtmeiers that was a 

many times show winner in the late 

1980s and early ’90s. Home raised CT 

Farmer 114L was a many times show 

winner, before his use as a herd sire. 

Current herd sire “Tank” (NJW FHF 

9710 Tank 45P) is one of the influential 

sires in the breed today. Russ and 

Roger also take great pride in the numerous 

Dams of Distinction that have 

graced the pastures of Tegtmeier Polled 

Herefords. Performance records have 

played an important role in their selection 

program for many years. They 

were among the first to actively measure 

carcass merit on their cattle, which 

they have done for the last 15 years. 

2010 was a highlight year for Tegtmeier 

Polled Herefords beginning with 

the National Western Stock Show in 

Denver where their pen of bulls and 

pen of heifers each finished second 

in their class. Even more rewarding 

was their 50th anniversary production 

sale in which 33.25 bulls and 82.25 

females, along with two flushes were 

well received by repeat and new customers, 

grossing over $235,000.

Polled Herefords, Russ and Roger 

Tegtmeier as the 2010 Hereford Breeders 

of the Year.

Breeder of the Year 

— Lowell Fisher and Family — 

The herd was founded by Lowell’s 

father, Clyde, with the purchase of 12 

registered heifers from Engelhaupt 

Herefords in 1943. These cattle were 

disbursed in 1966. In 1967, Lowell and 

wife Carol began their own herd retaining 

three registered and three commercial 

heifers. Leasing cows from 

Wilmer Wuertzer in South Dakota, 

Lowell purchased land from adjoining 

neighbors in 1975 and 1977. The next 

two decades were dedicated to raising 

their four children and holding on to 

the land, with a radioactive dump fight 

thrown in. 

It was always necessary to take in 

cattle to pasture until 2006 when they 

were finally able to fill them with their 

own home raised cattle. The modern 

herd started with the purchase of a Red 

Ox son from Bright Brothers in Denver 

in 1979. Since that time they have concentrated 

on using in-herd produced 

sires and purchasing semen from the 

best bulls available, when these sires 

were a good fit for their herd. This 

year’s Denver Carload consisted of 11 

bulls, all from cows produced on their 

ranch. Ten of these bulls are sired by

bulls produced on their ranch. 

Lowell was a long time consignor 

to regional consignment sales at Niobrara 

Valley, North Central at Bassett, 

Springview and Broken Bow. He also 

consigned many times to the Nebraska 

Hereford Association State Sale and 

exhibited at Ak-Sar-Ben. Most recently 

Lowell has had entries at the Nebraska 

Cattleman’s Classic and pens 

of bulls in Denver. 

Production facts for the herd: 

• TPR since 1968 

• Breeding and selecting for 

pigment and solid markings 

since 1979 

• AI since 1980 

• Embryo transfer since 1988 

• Guided by the belief that the 

ability to produce and reproduce 

on available feed is by far the 

most important trait in beef cattle. 

Lowell has a tremendous enthusiasm 

for the Hereford breed as well as 

unquestionable integrity. He focuses 

his life on God, family and Hereford 

cattle and his country. 

A little known fact is that Lowell ran 

unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of 

Representatives. 

“It has been a great trip and the opportunity 

to know so many wonderful 

people is very special.” 

The Nebraska Junior Show and the Futurity Show will be June 4 and 5 in 

Broken Bow. All yearling heifers sold at the NCC are eligible to show in the 

Futurity Show if the buyer pays their part of the Futurity Fee. The fee is $25 

per animal. If you purchase a heifer at the NCC and wish to make it Futurity 

eligible, contact me for more information. Do not pay the NCC when paying 

for your purchase. All Futurity Exhibitors receive some payback and a nice 

chunk of change is waiting for the champions and reserve champions. 

The Nebraska Hereford Tour will be in the central and southwest part of the 

state this year. The tour hosts will get together in March to decide on the dates. 

If you were on the tour in 2005, this would be your turn to host a stop again 

this year. If you are willing to do it again, drop me a line or an email and let me

Polled Hereford Show and Sale were 

held February 16th in Kearney, NE. 26 

bulls and 10 females participated in this 

year’s sale. Judge was Brian Finnestad, 

Belvidere, IL. Auctioneer was Jim Birdwell 

of Fletcher, OK. 

Taking home Champion Polled Hereford 

Bull honors was Lot 19X, VCR 

4037 Duration 27X ET, consigned by 

Valley Creek Ranch of Fairbury, NE. 

This bull is a 03/08/2010 son of THM 

Durango 4037 and sold to Jim Mader, 

Mader Farms, of Jennings, KS, for 

$3,500. 

Reserve Champion Polled Hereford

9086, consigned by Morgan Ranch of 

Burwell, NE. This bull is a 04/03/2009

with his father to do some judging for 

the Angus show when it was held at the 

Watertown Auditorium in the Uptown

his grandchildren take part, Leddy has 

been a part of the growth and evolution 

of the Farm Show to what it is today. 

Each year, the Watertown Area 

Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee, 

which organizes much of the show, 

chooses someone to honor for their 

years of work and support to make the 

Farm Show the week-long success it is.

For 2011, the Watertown Winter 

Farm Show is being dedicated to 

Leddy in appreciation of his more 

than half-century part in that success. 

Born on the farm south of Twin Brooks 

where he still lives and where he and 

his son, Wade, raise about 175 head of 

Hereford and Red Angus cattle along 

with corn and alfalfa, Leddy has been 

involved in the Farm Show through a 

multitude of changes and expansions. 

“I actually started showing in the late 

’50s when they started the Hereford 

show,” Leddy, 72, said recently. 

“My dad and I took bulls to that 

sale.” For years, Leddy has been a comanager 

for the Hereford show each 

February and says being involved like 

that has been a lot of fun along with the 

work it takes to put it on each year. “We 

really enjoy it,” he said. “The people 

treat us so good. 

Leddy said he and Wade and now 

Wade’s children are at the Farm Show 

for much of the week it runs, bringing 

in cattle on Sunday, then taking part in 

two shows and sales and, hopefully, the 

Supreme Row competition at the end 

of the week. But it also becomes a social 

event, a chance to catch up with old 

acquaintances and make new friends. 

“Just seeing all the people is fun — 

some you only see there,” Leddy said. 

“There’s a lot of old friends you don’t 

see too often. “All the (livestock) 

breeds get along so well and it’s just a 

good time.” 

The Farm Show has been a part of 

much of Leddy’s life. Now, the show 

is going to give back a little for that 

devotion. “I never once expected it,” 

Leddy said. “It’s quite gratifying to get 

an honor like this. “I always thought I 

was just one of the bunch and enjoyed 

taking part.” As he looks forward to yet 

another Farm Show gathering he says, 

“I’m a pretty lucky guy and I hope to 

come back many more years.”

Dr. Glynden Travis Easley, a resident 

of Sulphur, OK, was born May 29, 

1915 in Comanche, TX to Simon Peter 

and Sarah Elizabeth (Daniel) Easley. 

He passed away Thursday, January 20, 

2011 at Sulphur, OK at the age of 95. 

He moved with his family to homestead 

near Fort Sumner, NM. Three years 

later they moved to a farm southwest of 

Portales, NM where he attended school 

until graduating from High School. He

changes of ownership Dr. Easley stayed 

on as the veterinarian for over 30 years. 

He later entered private practice doing 

only large animals. In 1960 Dr. Easley 

received the American Veterinary Medical 

Association’s Practioners Research 

Award for making records 14 years of 

breeding and other research available. 

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame 

of American Hereford Assn. In the early 

1950s Dr. Easley started his own Hereford 

cattle herd at Hickory, Oklahoma. 

On October 28, 1951 he and Elizabeth 

Plaster Buchanan were married in Pauls 

Valley. She preceded him in death June 

10, 2001. 

Dr. Easley served as a member of 

the Sulphur Board of Education for 14 

years. He has been an active member of 

the Sulphur United Methodist Church 

since living in Sulphur. 

Survived by his daughter, Ann Mosness, 

Sulphur, OK; sons, David Easley 

and wife Debbie of Colorado Springs, 

CO; Mark Easley and wife Kathye of 

Seminole, OK; 4 grandchildren, 2 greatgrandchildren. 

Fran Silha 

Fran Silha, 83 of Bowman, ND died 

Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 at the Southwest 

Healthcare Hospital in Bowman. 

Frances (Fran) M. Silha was born 

the fourth child to John M. and Olida 

(Reiersgard) Susag on July 11, 1927, 

at the family farm. She attended Nebo 

School and graduated from the 8th 

grade in 1940. She went to Bowman 

High School and graduated in 1944. She 

spent the summer of 1944 in Miles City, 

MT, going to telegraphy school. She 

returned to Bowman and worked for 

the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and 

Pacific Railroad from October 1944 to 

January of 1947. She worked in Bowman, 

McIntosh, McLaughlin, Lemon, 

Hettinger, Rhame and Walker. At the 

time she left the railroad, her hourly 

wage was $1.12. 

On Jan. 8, 1947, she was united in 

marriage to F. Russel Silha at St. Charles 

Catholic rectory. They had five children: 

Randal (Cheryl), Mindoro, WI; 

Logan (Diana), on the ranch; Roxanne 

(Eddie) Holecek, Rhame, ND; L. Nada 

(Dale) Carter, Starbuck, MN; and Myrna 

(Alex) Friedt, Carrington, ND. Fran 

and Russ lived and ranched the Silha 

homestead their entire lives. Fran was a 

member of St. Charles Catholic Church, 

St. Charles Catholic Daughters and the 

Guild. Her hobbies included solitaire, 

jigsaw puzzles and reading. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, 

Russ; two brothers, Eddie Susag 

and Millins Susag; her parents; seven 

brothers-in-law: Elmer Silha, Tom 

Whittet, Reuben Arlt, Earl Silha, Lloyd 

Kumm, Art Heinz and Vernon Silha; 

four sisters-in-law: Anne Susag, Elsie 

Whittet Heinz, Agnes Silha and Verna 

Silha. 

Fran is survived by her five children, 

fifteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, 

three sisters-in-law, and many 

nieces and nephews.

Lyle Thomas Roberts Sr. 

Lyle Thomas Roberts Sr., 93, of rural 

Tecumseh, passed away Dec. 19, 2010 

in Naperville, IL following a brief illness. 

He was born to Willis and Hazel 

Roberts on March 14, 1917. A native of 

Tecumseh, NE and the eldest of three 

children, Lyle grew up on the family 

farm outside of Tecumseh which was 

originally homesteaded in 1873 by his 

paternal grandfather. After graduation 

from Tecumseh High School in 1934, 

Lyle attended the University of Nebraska 

in Lincoln where he received his 

Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultre 

and his teaching degree in 1940. 

He was a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran. 

During his time in the Navy he served 

in the Naval Air Transport Squadron 

VR-2 as a navigator until March of 

1946. He was stationed at the Alameda 

Naval Air Station, Alameda, CA and 

flew primarily to southern Pacific destinations 

and the Philippines. 

In August of 1947, he began working 

for the American Hereford Journal and 

was a field director until January 1954 

when he began working for the American 

Hereford Association, covering 

the southeastern portion of the United 

States. He married Alice Livengood in 

1953 and they moved to North Carolina 

in 1955 where they lived until their 

health and age requred them to move 

near their daughter in 2005. 

In April of 1955 their first child, Lyle 

was born and shortly after, they moved 

back to Tecumseh where they built their 

life together and raised registered Hereford 

cattle. 

Lyle remained employed by the AHA 

and in 1962 the family moved to Kansas 

City where Lyle worked as Director 

of Field Activities and later as Business 

Manager of the American Hereford 

Journal. Lyle and Alice moved back 

to the family farm in 1968 where Lyle 

was actively engaged in his own Hereford 

operation. He remained active in 

livestock judging for many years, serving 

as one of the judges of the internationl 

livestock shows in Forth Worth, 

Chicago, the American Royal and Denver. 

He was active in AKSARBEN and 

Johnson County Farm Bureau. 

He is survived by his children, Lyle 

Roberts, Jr. and wife Holly of Garland, 

TX, and Lauren Roberts Bailey and 

husband Charles, “Chuck” of Naperville, 

IL; and four grandchildren. Lyle 

was preceded in death by his parents; 

wife, Alice; brother, Keith; and sister, 

Ruth McGinn. 

Arvin R. Arthun 

Arvin R. Arthun, age 73, passed 

away on Feb. 5, 2011, in Billings, after 

a courageous battle with cancer. 

Arvin was born on March 1, 1937, 

to Arne J. and Hazel Arthun. He graduated 

from high school in Buffalo, 

WY. He married June Warnock, who 

preceded him in death in 1990. Arvin 

married Donna Sitz in 1996. Theirs 

was a beautiful marriage as they 

lived, loved and grew older together. 

Arvin attended Arkansas State 

University and earned a BA degree 

in journalism. He became a commissioned 

officer in the U.S. Army and 

achieved the rank of Captain. He was 

head of the Army Reserve for the state 

of Wyoming for a number of years. 

Arvin’s earlier career was in the 

printing industry, where he was part 

owner of a print shop in Casper, WY. 

He loved working in the livestock 

and ranching industry, and much of 

his later career was spent marketing 

cattle for livestock publications, selling 

and making ads, brochures and 

sales catalogs. He logged thousands 

of miles driving around the State of 

Montana and neighboring states, visiting 

ranches and going to livestock 

sales as a ringman. When he retired, 

he marketed cattle for Sitz Angus 

Ranch, devoting his expertise to the 

family business. He was a NILE 200 

Club Member for over 30 years, also 

serving on their Board of Directors. 

Arvin was a true gentleman who 

loved all his family. He spent his life 

furthering his walk with his Lord and 

Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a very 

giving and generous man, and has 

passed that legacy to his family. 

He is survived by his wife, Donna; 

daughters Christine (Chuck) Murphy 

and Pam Arthun; granddaughters 

Kayla (Dusty) McNeill and Jenna 

Kinney; and great-grandson Kaeston 

McNeill. He is also survived by stepsons 

Bob Sitz and Jim (Tammie) Sitz 

and stepdaughters Debbie (Craig) 

Kukuchka and Sherrie (Mark) Stokman. 

Additionally, he is survived by 

his brothers Ray (Chris) Arthun and 

Mark Aegerter; and sisters Arlene 

(Joe) Hager and Sonja (Mike) Abell; 

and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins 

and step-grandchildren.

New Office Site Selection Committee Appointed 

A 14 member committee has been appointed to begin a search 

for new office space for the ABHA. With 74 members and nearly 

2000 new registrations this year, the association has outgrown its 

current office. 

Under the direction of CEO, Dr. Craig Ludwig, expansion plans 

are being developed to address breeder needs over the next 10 to 15 

years. “In addition to more filing and clerical space, we need room 

for a graphic design department to assist our members with logo 

designs, sale materials and catalogues as well as website development. 

I can foresee the need for in-house printing and mailing 

facilities. These departments need to be directed by people who 

know and understand the cattle business” Ludwig said. In addition, 

two or three executive offices and a conference room are needed. 

Dr. Ludwig noted, “I am still old fashioned enough to want hard 

paper copies and file cabinets for registrations, transfers, and 

genetic defect testing results. 

Based on people around the country that have bought a homozygous 

Black Hereford bull to use on their cows this year, Ludwig 

expects membership to exceed 100 breeders in 2011 as these 

producers begin having calves and start to register them. For more 

information on registering calves in the American Black Hereford 

Association using Red Hereford cows visit www.blackhereford.com 

then click on Rules and Regulations and go to section 2.2. 

The committee hopes to complete their search this spring with a 

lease recommendation to the board of directors. The hope is to be 

moved into new space by the fall of 2011.

Two production sales are scheduled to be broadcast on the 

internet by DV Auction. On February 12th, J&N Ranch held their

It was another cold, winter day for the 

Elkington sale but the overflow crowd 

heated the auction to a high pitch, as auctioneer 

Butch Booker moved the 88 head 

of cattle in under two hours. This was a

the resolve and the ability of the ranching 

family. The good and bad times of 

ranching are all remembered when one 

looks back over the 100 years, but the 

bottom-line is the sustainability which 

has kept the ranch vital — 100 years 

later. 

The early days 

The Berry Ranch was homesteaded 

in 1910 northeast of Cheyenne by J.C. 

Berry and his wife Mary (Bevan). 

Mary had moved west to Wyoming, 

along with her family who originated 

from Iowa. Shortly after, Mary met 

a local boy, J.C. at a box social. The 

two became friends and lived 18 miles 

apart round trip. As the story goes, ‘J.C. 

walked 5,000 miles to see his girl — 

then married her.’ The two started a new 

life together and Mary filed for a homestead 

signed by Woodrow Wilson. 

J.C., and Mary had four children, Jim, 

Marvin, Dorrance “Doe” and a daughter 

Mary. Life was difficult in those days, 

water was scarce 

and it took tremendous 

courage 

and dedication to 

build a home for 

their family, dig 

wells, break sod 

for planting and 

fence the land to 

run livestock. Deciding 

whether to 

wash the laundry 

or bathe the children 

was a typical 

decision recalls

“There was always a lot of work to be 

done on the ranch, and my grandmother 

and my Aunt Mary were a very important 

part of the success of the ranch,” 

Jay says. “When the men were off to 

war, it was the women who dug deep 

and kept things going and sometimes 

we forget about those times.” 

Much of the early work was done 

with horse and team or buggy. The boys 

would often ride nearly five miles to 

check and feed the cattle and then rode 

five miles back to the headquarters. Jay 

remembers that his dad Marvin, never 

called himself a cowboy, even though 

he rode horses nearly every day and late 

into his life. The days were long and the 

pace much slower than today but family 

was always an important part of the

The Hereford Foundation 

When the boys came back from the 

war, ‘The Berrys’ Herefords was officially 

started. In 1935, the family 

bought some registered Hereford heifers 

from F.F. Cykendall Ranch in Roggen, 

CO, which was their beginning in 

the purebred cattle business. The operation 

was incorporated in 1960. 

As the operation grew, each of the 

three boys’ had their own homesite, 

however, none of the land adjoined 

the original homestead. “Our operation 

looked huge to folks who would be 

driving down the road because they saw 

Berry signs for 10 miles,” Jay recalls. 

Doe managed the breeding and A.I. 

program which was busy in the spring 

and then in the summer he oversaw the 

cowherd. Marvin managed the bulls and 

prepared them for the sale. Jim focused 

on calving the cows and heifers and 

moving them to grass in the spring. It 

was truly a family business that extended 

to the wives and children all helping 

out. 

The 1950s was a challenging time for 

the herd. Through the purchase of outside 

bulls the herd was exposed to the 

dwarf gene. The industry faced some 

tough times and after much culling and 

selection, by the mid 1960s the Berry 

herd was dwarf-free. 

As the children grew, they became 

more active in 4-H and the family enjoyed 

many successes with champion 

and reserve champion awards at county 

and state fairs. The family was very 

proud in 1968 when they exhibited the 

Champion Hereford Steer at the Wyoming 

State Fair. 

Popular herd sires used in the 1960s 

were Dandy Laurel, Nu Caldo Real, 

MW Prince Larry 16th, Berry’s Domino, 

Silver Prince 123, Mischief 678, 

DH Dan Mischief 12, FHR Diamond 

Mischief 48 and LHR L1 Domino 7520. 

By 1975 the family was selling over 

100 bulls and 65 females in their annual 

October sale. The 1979 sale was 

one to remember with 104 bulls averaging 

$2,500, quite an accomplishment in 

1970 dollars. 

The annual bull sale and all the hard 

work that went into preparing for it became 

a major family event. It was very 

important to the family to have a suc-


cessful sale, not only to keep the income 

coming in but to be rewarded in knowing 

they were producing the right bulls 

for their customers. 

Jay remembers that for two or three 

weeks before the fall bull sale, the 

school bus would stop at the site of the 

sale barn and off would march eight or 

nine kids, ready to help out in preparing 

the bulls for the sale. 

Each family member dedicated a lot 

of time to make the annual bull sale a 

success. One hundred bulls would be 

caught by halter in the morning, blownoff 

(with an old-fashioned blower, not 

today’s high-circuit blower), and their 

hair curled. On sale day, the bulls would 

each be caught individually, prepared 

for the sale and then lead to the ring. 

“It took at least fifteen men to be able 

to put on a sale because in those days it 

was very labor intensive.” 

Free Lunch 

As each of the three sons’ families 

grew the decision was made for the 

families to go their separate ways. 

After much discussion the final decision 

was to sell the entire herd at the 

annual sale time. It was publicized to 

the Hereford industry that the herd was 

going to be sold. T.V. Jones, field representative 

for the Record Stockman 

at the time, was a good friend of the 

Berry family and had worked ringside

at many of the family’s bull sales. J.C. 

told Jones that if he could find a buyer 

for the herd, they would consider selling 

the herd in one full group. “J.C. 

didn’t think I would get it done and to 

be honest, I didn’t know if I would either,”

him and his older brother. When Dad 

was 15 years old his brother went into 

the service, leaving him responsible 

for running the ranch with his mother 

and two sisters,” explains George Ochsner’s 

son, Blake Ochsner “He worked 

odd jobs around town and received 

most of his education while working at 

the local sale barn.” 

“I spent all my life three miles south 

of here, until 1955, when Ruby and I 

got married and bought this place,” 

notes George. “We bought our first registered 

cow in 1956, and have been in 

the registered business ever since.” 

“We ran a lot of commercial cows

in those days, too, and bucket calves, 

anything to make money to pay the 

bills,” adds Ruby Ochsner. “George 

would stay late at the sales and come 

home and say, ‘Come look what I got,’ 

so I would go down to the barn and 

he’d unload a bunch of shabby little 

calves.” 

Today the Ochsner herd is comprised 

of all registered Hereford and Black 

Angus cows, and they market about 

200 bulls annually. They also have a 

feedlot operation, irrigated farmland 

and a heifer development program. 

Blake explains the expansion and diversification 

of the operation was the 

result of he and his siblings’ returning 


an overall friend to everyone. 

But with the many acquaintances 

that Jones had in the cattle industry he 

was able to locate someone interested 

in looking at the herd. Jones brought 

Ron and Carol Sondrup of Yoder, CO, 

to view the herd. Before we even saw 

the entire cowherd Sondrup told Jones, 

he was interested and just needed to figure 

out how to buy the whole herd. The 

deal was put together and Sondrups purchased 

what was considered by many 

as one of the top five Hereford herds in 

the nation. “The sale of the Berry herd 

was the largest, private treaty sale of a 

Hereford herd of cattle at that time and 

maybe even still today,” Jones says. 

The sale report in the Hereford Journal 

read: 

“In a transaction at what could be 

the highest private treaty sale figure in 

the breed’s history, the entire registered 

herd of The Berry’s, Cheyenne, WY, 

sold to Sondrup Cattle Co., Yoder, CO. 

to the ranch after starting their own 

families. 

“Our oldest daughter Tena lives 

about 15 miles north of here and they 

have their own operation, but they buy 

our bulls and we buy back their calves 

and they are still very involved,” comments 

Ruby. “Our other three kids are 

all directly involved in this operation 

and live nearby.” 

“Every morning we all generally sit 

around the table for about 45 minutes 

to make our plans for the day over coffee,” 

says George. 

“That is really what holds everything 

together,” adds Ruby. “They all 

discuss what needs to be done, and 

what needs to be done today, and if 

they will all work together, or go their 

separate ways. If the 

grandsons are around 

they will come in, too. 

Everyone gets along and 

knows what is going 

on, and if it gets too involved 

I’ll come into the 

living room and drink 

my coffee,” she says 

with a chuckle. 

“We really are blessed 

with an amazing family, 

and that’s number one to 

us,” notes George. 

“We still do basically 

the same thing on the calf side that 

we did in the beginning, except today 

we buy a lot of calves back from our 

bull customers and run them over. The 

lighter cattle go to grass and we sell 

them off the pasture. The bigger end we 

fatten in a commercial feedlot in Torrington. 

We have two irrigated pivots 

of hay, and two irrigated pivots of corn 

we chop into silage, and that’s our feed 

base,” explains George. 

“We purchase heifers back from our 

bulls customers, too. We develop and 

AI them, then sell them as replacements. 

We’ve sold heifers to operations 

in New Mexico, Illinois and Iowa recently, 

in addition to selling a lot within

When the family dissolved ‘The Berrys’, 

each of the brothers pursued their 

own interests. Jim retired and Doe started 

a commercial cow herd, but Marvin 

and his wife Margaret wanted to stay 

active in the Hereford business. Marvin 

was able to purchase back 50 heifer 

calves from Sondrup that were sold in 

the original deal but had not yet left 

the Berry Ranch. So Marvin was able 

to carry on his love for Hereford cattle 

with many of the bloodlines that he had 

worked hard to develop. Marvin was 

joined by his son Jay and they retained 

the name, ‘The Berrys.’ 

However, in the 1980s many changes 

were taking place in the cattle business. 

There was the type change to larger 

framed cattle and a tremendous shift to 

the focus on the show ring. EPDs were 


our region. We even shipped registered 

heifers to Kazakhstan this fall,” he 

adds. 

“Our bull customers would come 

and pick out their Hereford bulls, and 

mention they wanted a few Angus 

bulls, too, and ask us where they could 

find some good ones,” explains Ruby 

“It’s just as cheap to 

feed a good cow as 

a poor one, and you 

get a lot more pleasure 

out of looking 

at the good ones.” –

20 years ago. “So when a guy was having 

a dispersal, George was able to buy 

some really good Black Angus cattle 

and we started raising them.” 

The Ochsners sell all their bulls private 

treaty, and Ruby explains their 

customers like it that way. 

“Our buyers love being able to pick. 

Blake writes a price beside each bull 

and the buyers can go through and 

choose what they want. It’s worked really 

well for us, and our buyers have 

told us they like choosing and knowing 

what they’re buying, and they have 

asked us to please not put the bulls in a 

sale,” she says.

“We also have a website, and today 

a lot of our customers call us to buy 

bulls without ever coming to the ranch. 

We sell bulls over the internet from 

here to Kansas,” adds George. 

The Ochsners are also known for 

their success in the show ring, and 

have shown cattle for 65 years. 

“Tena got us started showing when 

she was nine years old and had the 

champion feeder calf,” notes Ruby. 

“We have shown cattle and sold 

bulls at the Wyoming State Fair in 

Douglas, the National Western Stock 

Show and the Black Hills Stock Show 

over the years,” adds George. “My favorite 

thing is watching the grandkids 

show their cattle at the county and 

state fair. That’s a lot of fun. They always 

show cattle we have raised.” 

Blake notes that his parents have 

been long-standing supporters of all 

local 4-H and FFA kids, and the Ochsners 

also sell some steers and heifers 

as youth projects. 

“Dad has always been determined 

to sell problem-free cattle that perform 

in the pasture and the feedlot, 

and his philosophy is to never sell a 

bull unless he is willing to buy all his 

offspring,” says Blake. “That philosophy 

has been a key to the success of all 

aspects of the operation. One of his favorite 

sayings is, ‘In the long run you 

will make more money selling a steer 

than you will by selling a poor bull.”

Jay and Janice have four children, 

Stacia, Amy, Jessie and Ben, and the 

family is carrying on the traditions of 

their father and grandfather and still 

hosting annual October bull sales to 

market their genetics. 

“Times are challenging, and we continue 

to see a lot of changes in the industry,” 

Jay says. “In 2001, we dropped 

into the worse drought in 50 years in

the cowherd shrunk, marketing bulls 

became more difficult and there were 

many more demands placed on the family. 

However, the history and the continued 

progress made by the Berry family 

to offer top-quality bulls that will go 

out and work for today’s cattlemen has 

keep them moving ahead. “We sell our 

bulls to many long-standing Hereford 

on Hereford establishments,” Jay states. 

“These folks have realized the benefits 

of Hereford cattle and see the hidden 

advantages of disposition and feed efficiency.” 

Even though some of these 

producers may be getting out sold at the 

sale barn as they market their calves, 

these are astute cattlemen and they look 

at the whole picture of profitability and
