(oh, for the day of the airplane). The 

first time I was in Calgary it was a 

city of about 50,000 people but in 

my lifetime it has grown to a city 

of over a million people. The Stampede 

grounds is right in the middle 

of the city, which to the foreigners

last issue of the 

spring. The winter weather finally 

seems to have broken here and we 

are getting some very welcomed, 

warmer spring weather. Most of the 

snow has melted except for the really 

big drifts and what is left in the 

creeks which still seems like a lot of 

snow. It’s heart-warming to finally 

see baby calves out running and 

playing in the pastures and enjoying 

the sun. It’s been another long 

winter but in our neck of the woods

South Dakota Tops Dams of Distinction List 

Rausch Herefords leads the pack nationwide 

A total of 1,941 Hereford cows from 

639 Hereford performance herds in 43 

states earned the honor of being named 

a 2009 Dam of Distinction by the American 

Hereford Association (AHA). 

For the 29th consecutive year, South 

Dakota Hereford operation Rausch 

Here fords owns the most Dams of Distinction 

honored at 76 head, 20 more 

than last year, and again leads its state 

to the top of the list with 306 cows 

recognized. 

The 2009 Dams of Distinction list honors 

Hereford cows that meet the highest 

standard of production and recognizes 

the cattlemen who produce them. In 

order to be named 

a Dam of Distinction, 

a Hereford cow 

must meet all the job 

requirements for an 

ideal cow. She should 

produce a healthy, 

growthy calf every 

year; she should calve 

as a two-year-old, 

and she should cause 

her owner absolutely 

no problems. A Dam 

of Distinction is the 

standard by which all

Duncan’s father Thomas and his uncle 

Harold established the wellknown 

Lees Brothers herd in 1949. Thomas 

took over the herd in 1964, renaming 

it Blair-Athol Polled Herefords. This 

is the herd which Duncan took over at 

the age of 24, with his father’s untimely 

Rausch Herefords, Hoven, SD, topped the Dams of Distinction herd 

for the 29th consecutive year. Congratulations!

presents some planning and mixing 

with the city traffic. Many of you have 

probably never seen over 180 basically 

two-year-old Hereford bulls at a 

consignment sale, most weighing over 

2000 pounds, haltered and tied in a big 

auditorium. It is a sight to see. Denver 

was the same way years ago and the 

two sales were comparable in North 

America. However some things have 

changed for both events. 

The cattle were very good and the sale 

was the best in the last several years. We 

got the chance to see and visit with many 

old friends and met many new Hereford 

people. I had a nice visit with Gordon 

Stephenson, the General Manager of the 

Canadian Hereford Assn., and Canadian 

Hereford Assn. President Garth Charlton, 

about the Hereford breed and the 

progress in Canada. 

We also got to visit with Brad Dubeau, 

the Director of Communications 

for the CHA, and also the person who 

heads the great new publication of the 

CHA. We were also fortunate to meet 

Karin Schmid, Breed Development 

Coordinator for the CHA. Her articles 

in the Canadian Hereford Digest are 

very interesting. A wonderful group of 

people and I am happy we were able 

to make the long journey. Several very 

good herd bull prospects will make their 

way to the USA soon, to some notable 

herds, from this sale. 

As nice as this trip was I was unfortunate 

to contact a virus and I have 

been sick for over two weeks since I got 

home. It seems there is always a price to 

pay for a nice trip! 

As soon as we got back to Twin Bridges, 

Jill refueled and headed east for the 

Fort Keogh sale in Miles City, about 400 

miles distant. Marc who was headed to 

Oregon to the Harrell sale, drove the 120 

miles to Rapid City, only to find heavy 

fog and a cancelled airline flight. Some 

days you can’t win but the crew from 

Hereford America keeps charging on! 

I lost another old rancher friend the 

other day. Gene Hanson, of Whitehall, 

MT lost the battle after a long illness. 

Over 60 years ago my Dad wanted to 

take our show herd to the big show on 

the West Coast, The Pacific International 

at Portland, Oregon. I was in my late

We thought of every one who might help 

but it was tough finding someone who 

would make this kind of trip and who 

knew something about show cattle. I 

thought of my friend and fellow 4-Her, 

Gene Hanson, then of Sheridan, MT. 

We approached him and after several 

days of decision with his folks, Gene 

called and said he would go with me. 

The old box car was moved into Twin 

Bridges at about 15 miles per hour as

the track was not too good, and placed 

where we could work on it in preparation 

for the trip. We had to put tie rings 

in to tie the cattle, bed the car with lots 

of straw, put a 150 gallon water tank in 

for the cattle to drink from, feed for the 

cattle for two weeks, and then all the 

show supplies and our personal sleeping 

bags, and food for the trip, as we were 

warned that the freight train did not stop 

for food, just maybe cattle water if we 

made enough noise. 

The time came and the cattle were 

loaded and Gene and I said farewell to 

the locals and started our long trek to 

Portland. It took us over two hours just 

to get out of the valley. We traveled over 

three mountain passes, went through 

several major cities and fought weather 

and bums, (they all wanted to get in our 

boxcar because they thought we had 

food and shelter and money?) When we 

got west of Spokane we were held up for 

another train to hook up with more cattle 

going to Portland, as the conductor told

me. The train crew hooked up a car next 

to us with a load of Shorthorn cattle. The 

guy taking care of the carload got out 

and introduced himself to us. He said, 

“I am Bill Bennett and I am going to the 

Portland show,” and Gene and I told him 

we were headed there too. (Yes, this is 

the same Bill Bennett of later Hereford 

and Angus fame.) 

Gene and I got settled at the stock 

show and we did well at the show and 

everything was going good except Gene 

was gone from the cattle a lot. I thought 

he was probably checking the local girls 

out and upon asking why he was gone so 

much he told me he had found a white 

Shorthorn steer that was for sale and 

he thought he could win our Montana 

Winter Fair with him. He hated to ask 

me, as I was such a Hereford man, if I 

cared if he bought the steer and took him 

home with us. Gene told me that there 

was a $1,000 prize for a Shorthorn steer 

to win at Winter Fair and he wanted to 

go after it. That was a lot of money then 

as you could buy a new Ford for less 

than $2000. Gene bought the steer for 

about $400 and we loaded him on the 

train with our cattle and waited for the 

train crew to head us home. Things went 

pretty well until we got to the Cascade 

Mountains and we got caught in a winter 

blizzard. That boxcar was really cold 

and we had to get in between the cattle 

to keep warm, as the long train slowly 

pulled over the mountain. Food was 

getting short and of course it was all 

cold and the only water not frozen was 

in the stock tank. 

The train stopped to pick up some 

cars and the conductor came back to 

our car and said, “The engineer was 

feeling sorry for you guys in this storm 

and wants you to come up to the engine 

and ride where it is warm. Gene 

and I quickly took the offer and rode 

in warmth and some comfort over the 

mountain into western Montana where 

the train crew changed and we were 

told we needed to go back to the boxcar. 

We did get some new food and water at 

that stop and the rest of the three day 

trip home was slow but uneventful. We 

were tired, more experienced than most 

teenagers were in those days and we really 

knew a lot about freight trains! Gene 

was good company but, I didn’t see him 

too much for the rest of the year, as he 

had had enough train rides with me and 

headed home. I headed out on the freight 

train alone for the next four months and 

got home about a month before Winter 

Fair. Gene’s white Shorthorn steer was 

named Champion Steer over all breeds 

at the Montana Winter Fair and sold for 

a considerable amount. You can imagine 

how proud Gene was, and I was for him. 

Gene went on to marry a local 4-H girl, 

Martha Roffler, and they raised three 

fine young men. I worked with Gene 

for years on the local 4-H youth sale 

which still carries on with great success. 

Hanson’s ranched in this valley, near 

Whitehall, until Gene’s health declined 

and his son Dean carried on. Martha still 

lives on the ranch. Gene never forgot

that trip to Portland and neither did I. 

We remained friends for our lifetime. 

So long old friend, our railroad boxcar 

days are over! 

I just read today that the State of Nevada 

is closing its College of Agriculture 

at The University of Nevada Reno. This 

action will go down in history as the first 

closure of a U.S. land grants college of 

agriculture. What kind of a message does 

this send to agriculture? Every college 

in the nation has a degree in “tree hugging” 

or some kind of protest area but 

we are closing a college of agriculture? 

The Morrill Act was set up by Congress 

in 1862 to set up gifts of federal land to 

establish universities in the states. This 

act required the universities to maintain 

certain programs including agriculture! 

How now can a state decide to change 

the deal? Some states such as Nevada 

are having severe financial problems 

but this decision will give a lot of people 

in agriculture and higher education in 

general, something to think about. 

I love sports about as well as anyone 

but maybe, just maybe, sports is taking 

our whole idea of higher education a 

bit too far. OK you big time university 

fans, how much does your football coach 

make? The University of Nevada Los 

Vegas just this year hired our University 

of Montana football coach for about 

$500,000 more than our college could 

budget. Just an example, and you Alabama 

guys have a multi-million dollar 

coach. A point to consider?

Nation’s Top Hereford Cows Named to Dams of Distinction List 


Hereford cows can be judged. 

The cow must do her job, but also her owner must manage 

the herd correctly to give her the opportunity to excel. Only 

a small portion of active cows is recognized. All heifers have 

the potential of being a Dam of Distinction, but only a small 

percentage fit the job description of an ideal cow year in and 

year out. 

In order for a cow to be named a 2009 Dam of Distinction 

she must have: 

1) Weaned a calf born since January 1, 2008. 

2) Produced at least three calves. 

3) Initially calved at 30 months of age or less. 

4) Had an interval between the first and second calves of no 

greater than 400 days. In addition, a 370-day calving interval

in northwestern South Dakota it will do 

wonders for growing pasture and hay. Unfortunately 

many areas in the eastern Dakotas, 

Minnesota and Iowa now have problems 

with flooding. 

In March Dad, Paul Hinderager (Anchor 

Polled Herefords) and I ventured to the Calgary 

Bull Sale in Calgary, Canada. Dad had 

been to the bull sale on several occasions 

but neither Paul nor I had ever been to the 

event. I met them in Montana and we drove 

to Calgary where we attended the Hereford 

events for two days. The Stampede Park 

grounds, where the show and sale are held, 

are right downtown (even closer than the 

Denver Stockyards are to downtown Denver) 

which makes for an interesting and 

unique venue. It was relatively easy to get 

to other than the maniacal Calgary drivers! 

Thanks for driving in the city, Paul. 

The Canadian Hereford breeders are 

always so welcoming and hospitable. We 

visited with a number of Hereford breeders 

and got caught up on what’s been happening. 

The breeders I talked to were upbeat 

about the Hereford business in Canada. 

Like here, they are seeing renewed interest 

in Hereford bulls from commercial 

breeders. Demand, at least on the top end 

of sales there, has been strong this year. 

They are optimistic but a great deal of 

their economy depends on what happens 

here in the states. 

The lineup of bulls was very impressive 

with about 180 head of big bulls, the majority 

of which were two-year-olds. It’s a 

very unique event in its own right. When 

compared to U.S. shows and sales it is a 

bit lower-key but nonetheless, very impressive 

in terms of size and quality. The 

show is held in the old Stampede Grounds 

arena and by the time they get a class of 

big bulls into it, it is full! This year the

their cows earlier, buy bulls sooner, and 

turn their cattle out to range pastures earlier, 

therefore the Calgary ranchers also got 

the distinction as pacesetters among their 

western Canadian counterparts. That trendsetting 

distinction continues 100 years later 

as the Calgary Bull Sale is the benchmark 

for other bull sales across the prairie provinces.

This seems to hold true today. On sale day 

this year the exchange rate was on par with 

the U.S. dollar. This is the first I can remember 

in quite some time. Just the day before it 

was 5 cents under. 

Along with the 110th anniversary of the 

Calgary Bull Sale, congratulations are also 

in order to the Canadian Hereford breeders 

on their 150th year of raising registered Herefords. 

Such a rich history the U.S. and Canada 

share with Hereford cattle. Thank you to 

the Canadian Hereford Digest for allowing 

us to reprint their excellent article which is a 

very interesting history written by Catherine 

A. Brown, associate editor of the Digest. 

Another anniversary of note is the 100th 

anniversary of the first U.S. Hereford publication, 

the American Hereford Journal. 

On May 1, 1910 Hayes Walker started the 

American Hereford Journal, “for producers 

of Herefords, registered and commercial... 

horned and polled.” For many years the 

American Hereford Journal was produced 

twice a month. It was owned by the Walker 

family until 1961 when it sold to the American 

Hereford Association and it became 

the official publication of the American 

Hereford Association. The Polled Hereford 

World, founded by Frank Farley who was a 

former employee of the American Hereford 

Journal, became the official publication of 

the American Polled Hereford Association 

in 1965. In 1995, after the AHA and APHA 

merged, the two publications were melded 

together and became the Hereford World. 

I have a number of the very early American 

Hereford Journals and Hereford Record 

books which I greatly value. The earliest 

AHJ I have is Volume 2, which is 1911- 

1912. Thank you to Larry Vukonich of 

Montana for donating this collection to me. 

I enjoy it to no end. A few of the early articles 

talk about things that are still relevant 

today while others put into perspective very 

quickly just how far we have come in 100+ 

years. 

In the 50th Anniversary American Hereford 

Journal it was stated by publisher Hayes 

Walker, Jr., “Our faith in this great breed 

was never stronger than it is today — after 

50 years of experience which has embraced 

times of both prosperity and adversity for 

the breed, during which it has scaled the 

heights and sounded the depths of the joys 

and evils to which human beings and their 

charges are the heirs. We eagerly join those 

who see ahead a very bright future for the 

Whitefaces and for the men who honestly 

and industriously give to the breed the best 

that is in them.” 

“But it is a labor in which all must join 

if it is to succeed to the fullest. The breed’s 

interests, East, West, North and South, are 

common interests. The breed and its organizations, 

official and otherwise, must not be 

divided in spirit and activity. The strength 

of the breed, in its entirety, lies in the fact 

of this common interest, which must be kept 

ever in mind.” 

Here it is, another 50 years later, and these 

thoughts and statements certainly apply today.

150 Years of Herefords in Canada 


tions were not in existence at the time, so 

a lot of the information on early importations 

has been lost. 

At the time of Frederick William 

Stone’s official importations of Herefords 

into Canada in 1860 and 1861, the 

country had yet to enter into Confederation. 

Within a few years of that historical 

date, Abraham Lincoln was elected 

President of the United States, then 

re-elected, before his demise in 1865. 

U.S. and Britain agreed to suppress the 

slave trade and serfdom was abolished 

in Russia; The U.S. Civil War raged; the 

Toronto Stock Exchange was created 

and the Red Cross and Salvation Army 

organizations were founded; the U.S. 

Department of Agriculture was created 

death. Duncan and brother Chris ran the 

ranch together until 1984 when Chris 

established the C & T herd. The family 

also branches out to the herd of George 

and Corey Lees of Glenlees Herefords. 

Duncan’s land was always best suited to 

cattle. He stuck with Herefords because 

“they always paid the bills.” Next year 

will be the family’s hundredth year raising 

registered Herefords. 

This is the story of people. It’s the 

story of great cowboys and breed promoters 

and ranches. It’s the story behind 

shows like Agribition, world class bull 

sales and a strong youth organization. 

But most of all, it’s the story of a breed 

of cattle that persisted through the generations. 

This rugged, thick-hided, whitefaced 

breed is the one you can see on windy 

hillsides on cold, winter days, that is still 

out there foraging. 

It is perfectly suited to the North 

American continent. Stories of 20th century 

cattlemen walking their cattle 10 to 

20 miles or more to livestock shows or 

to the trains that would take them there, 

in the days before trucks and trailers 

serve as a metaphor to the breed’s walk 

through pastures, rock, meadows and 

mountains from the Atlantic to the Pacific, 

through 150 years. 

“The feet on Hereford cattle are best 

of all,” says young Saskatchewan breeder 

Murray Andrews. 

How they got here is another story. 

“The English claim they sent Hereford 

cattle here over 200 years ago,” says 

Norma Dunn, a former CHA employee. 

However, as 94-year-old Charles Scranton,

laws; the flush toilet, moving pictures, 

pasteurization, the machine gun, roller 

skates, the fire extinguisher, the coffee 

maker and the first color photographs 

were invented. So were 

the first pro golf tournaments 

played with the 

British Golf Open and 

the first pro golf tournament 

in Scotland. The 

Ontario Veterinary College 

was established in 

1862. The 1800s also 

ushered in the advent of 

agricultural fairs. 

Stone’s herd, based at 

Guelph, Ontario, produced 

Herefords that 

influenced the breed 

across North America. 

The University of 

Guelph and beef cattle 

research station are located 

on the property once owned by Mr. 

Stone, the recipient of many agricultural 

awards. 

Stone’s foresight to import only top 

quality stock available from Britain 

proved advantageous to the proliferation 

of the breed in North America. 

Over the years, the breeds’ primary 

strengths have prevailed. It is foremost 

the maternal breed. High fertility and efficiency 

have earned Herefords their permanence. 

But so has temperament. 

“They are so easy to get along 

with,”says Ray VanSteinburg, of Pine 

Butte Ranch. “It’s important to me to 

enjoy whatever you’re working with, 

particularly when you can produce a top 

saleable product.” Herefords on pasture 

are “happy to see you”, he says. And 

they are easy on 

fences. 

“Herefords are 

low in maintenance 

and labor inputs,” 

says Saskatchewan 

breeder Spence

has been in the 

breed for 100 years. 

“One guy and one 

horse can handle 

100 head, whereas 

100 exotics would 

take three to four 

guys on horses.” 

“It’s the little 

things that make 

the big differences,” 

says VanSteinburg. 

Mossom Boyd was one of Canada’s pioneer 

breeders who developed Polled Herefords. 

“It’s not what you get in the sale ring; 

it’s the cost of getting them in there that 

counts.” 

It took the breed promoters to prove 

those facts – the likes of Wib Donaldson, 

Jonathan Fox, Louis Latimer, Walter 

Blume, Jim Hole, Doris and Stuart 

Fenton, Vern and Louise Croy, the 

Warnycas, Dave and Joe Hasson, Grant 

Hirsche, and Gil Henderson; Gene Han-

son, Charlie Jones and the Powleslands. 

These were among the pioneers; the 

legendary builders of the breed in Canada. 

Many have since taken their hands 

out of the water, as Latimer says, but the 

ripples still remain. 

From the 19th century, Quebec breeder 

and renowned cattle judge H.D. Smith 

would later become President and secretary-manager 

for the CHA. He was the 

first to tattoo his cattle and had tattoos 

adopted by the CHA. 

Ontario’s Mossom Boyd follows F.W. 

Stone as a pioneer breeder, having introduced 

and developed Polled Herefords 

in Canada. 

Another early breeder, Senator M.H. 

Cochrane of Quebec, started a Hereford 

herd in 1865. In partnership with his son 

James, he later established the Cochrane 

Ranch west of Calgary and sold many 

foundation animals to Canadian and 

American breeders. 

By the mid 1970s Latimer and Blume 

joined a CHA excursion to England and 

did well selling the “modern” Canadian 

Hereford. Six bulls were taken for display 

at the Royal show and sold there, 

says former CHA general manager Perry 

Wilkes. “That was the beginning of really 

good exports to the UK.” 

Some stories aren’t well publicized. 

The Cornish family from Ontario began 

breeding Herefords in 1921 when 

Milton purchased two heifer calves for 

$200 each by mail order from western 

Ontario. One raised a calf every year for 

20 years and lived to be 21 years of age.

manager from 1942 to 1959, in his history 

of the breed entitled The Hereford in Canada 

1860-1960. 

Notable breeders, of course, begot notable 

bulls, far too many to mention. But some “old 

boys” cannot be forgotten. Mossom Boyd’s 

“Bullion the 4th” was a record breaking, top 

selling Polled Hereford at $2,025 in 1914. 

The bull was resold by its American owners 

at seven years of age, bringing $9,500, and 

breaking a new world record. His descendents 

commanded top prices for years to follow and 

many Polled Herefords reportedly go back to 

this sire. 

The Latimers talk about Four Square Leonard 

25L as being the most influential in the 

Remitall herd. Four Square Modern Tone 42M 

developed another line that led to breeding 

Remitall Crusader 33C and the beginning of 

the Enforcer 107 line. 

The 42M bull and Remitall Leonard 38L left 

them a lot of good females, the latter of which 

was one of their top selling A.I. sires, according 

to Gary Latimer. 

Ned 425E, Justa Banner and Predominant 

put Ponderosa Ranch on the map according to 

Don Jarrett, as WTK Bond 75A and his son, 

Continental 66F did for the W-T-K herd. 

Jim Hole’s Standard Lad 55C was Calgary 

Bull Sale Reserve Champion in 1973 and sold 

to Bar Pipe Farms where he became a foundation 

herdsire. 

Standard Lad 93J, Standard Lad 95J and 

especially Stanmore 43K were among Hole’s 

most influential sires. 

Bert & Marion Powesland of Rusticana 

Here fords, Alberta, and members of the Hereford 

Hall of Fame, built their cow herd on a 

bull called Ardmore C Domino 560, purchased 

at the Calgary bull sale. This bull also sired a 

number of bulls sold at subsequent sales. 

Prince Domino 9th was behind the extensively 

used Silver Standard bull, says Ron 

Hanson. Hanson Ranches opened up some 

international trading opportunities with their 

BB Domino 1087 bull, the top growth performance 

bull in the world at the time. And

Ranches, is considered the granddaddy 

of many Canadian Herefords today and 

has been used worldwide. 

The Remitall Keynote 20X and resulting 

Boomer 46B and CS Boomer 29F 

bulls are legendary in the breed’s most 

recent history, as is Remitall Governor 

236G. Remitall Online 122L is another 

of the breed’s most prolific sires and is 

the only Canadian bull to achieve National 

Champion Bull honors in both 

Canada and the U.S. He was, in fact, a 

two-time U.S. National Champion. The 

majority of American Hereford pedigrees 

are believed to go back to these 

sires. 

The baldies and buckskins of North 

America have promoted the value of the 

Hereford bull and female over time in 

commercial circles while Herefords also 

gained notoriety through specific events. 

Canadian Herefords were put in the 

spotlight when Canada hosted the World 

Hereford Conference of 1976. 

“A large international crowd representing 

over 20 countries was amazed 

at the quality of Canadian cattle and this 

was the start 

of major international

Banff was followed by a 900-head Hereford 

show at Calgary. 

Herefords have also been the main 

breed of cattle featured for years at the 

Calgary Bull Sale, the oldest continuously 

held consignment sale in North 

America, according to Joanne Hole, 

wife of the late Jim Hole and author of 

the sale’s history. 

“It has been the benchmark sale for 

horned Herefords in Canada for many 

years,” she says. 

Edward Jupp, former fieldman for the 

Canadian Hereford Digest, attended the 

Calgary Bull sale for 25 years. He says 

the sale is an education for everybody in 

attendance. But it used to run for three to 

four days and is now reduced to three or 

four hours. 

“The big city bull sales have all come 

down in size and significance,” says former 

Digest owner, Kurt Gilmore. This 

includes the Regina Bull Sale which was 

once the largest halter-led bull sale in the 

world, according to former CHA General 

Manager, Perry Wilkes. 

Current CHA General Manager Gordon 

Stephenson’s fondest memories of 

the breed involve the Regina Bull Sale 

where 300 to 400 Hereford bulls sold. 

Herefords have also been showcased for 

years at the Canadian Western Agribition, 

a show created by Hereford breeders. 

This internationally renowned national 

livestock event was established in 

1970, in large part, due to the efforts of 

Spence Sutter’s father, Chris. Inspired by 

the stock show at Denver, Sutter wanted 

a major livestock show on the prairies.

Herefords outnumbered 

all other breeds, 

three-to-one. Gary 

Minish judged, followed 

by Jonathan Fox the next year, 

who judged on horseback in the old auditorium. 

“Agribition had a major impact on 

exports and getting breeders together 

once a year to collectively promote the 

breed,” says Porteous. 

Breed promotion and the integrity of 

Hereford pedigrees has been the domain 

of the Canadian Hereford Association 

since 1890. The CHA currently comprises 

about 1,500 annual, life and junior 

members across Canada and registers 

about 15,000 Herefords annually. 

Its current offices in Calgary were 

built in 1980 when memberships numbered 

over 45,000. 

“The Canadian Hereford Association 

has been an active supporter and participant 

in the Canadian Beef Breeds Council 

(CBBC), its organizational structure, 

evolution and programs for a long time,” 

says CBBB General Manager, Herb 

Old CHA offi ce 

McLane. 

“This clearly indicates the recognition 

of the Hereford industry of the needs of 

the overall purebred cattle industry… 

[such as] genetic improvement and genomics, 

international market development, 

risk management tools and the 

national information system, to name a 

few.” 

The collaboration with CBBC has 

helped to secure recent exports to Russia. 

And what better way to ensure the survival 

of the breed than through the next 

generation. Herefords have “the characteristics 

that lend themselves well to 

youth,” says former member Sarah Hasson 

in a recent Ontario Memoir of the 

breed.

the eighties, a grading system change 

which favored the growth of the Angus 

beef brand, Country of Origin Labeling 

(COOL) in the U.S., oil patch wages 

of $60-$70/hour, stagnant prices and 

most notably, BSE. Still the breed has 

persisted. It is estimated that well over 

30 percent of the beef cow population 

in Canada carries Hereford breeding. 

Technology changes in communication, 

transportation and data recording has 

helped support and give new life to the 

breed. And Pan American EPDs have 

opened new market opportunities. 

While the white face is a dominant 

trait worth hanging on to among the 

sea of breeds that systematically “went 

black” change is also important, in the 

words of Louis Latimer. “The ability to 

change is more essential than change itesland, 

Stu Fenton and Ed Newton, and 

was held at Red Deer, Alberta in 1980. 

At this point in his life, Duncan Lees 

says his boys, who did well in the junior 

association, encourage his activities as a 

cattle breeder more than anything now. 

What Hereford breeders and the breed 

itself have endured, to-date, is impressive. 

The most obvious trend the Hereford 

breed has withstood is that of frame 

size adjustments. 

The earliest of the English breed were 

up to seven feet tall. Bulls and females 

of the 1700s were up to 3,000 or 4,000 

pounds, respectively. 

These Herefords were primarily used 

as oxen to pull implements. 

The 1940s and 1950s witnessed the 

proliferation of “baby beef” and “belt 

buckle” cattle, which manifested the desire 

for smaller cuts and earlier maturing 

cattle. It resulted in a lot of single-trait 

selection, leading to genetic mutations 

which have since been eliminated. 

The ‘70s and ‘80s manifested a new 

trend toward taller, leaner genetics to 

compete with newly imported exotic 

breeds. The breed has since recovered to 

idealize a more moderate beast between 

the extremes. 

Among the breed’s challenges, over 

time, are, disease, a decline in agriculture 

and a corresponding decline in 

memberships; increased costs of production, 

the loss of income tax incentives to 

many producers, high interest rates of

was the catalyst to a lot of junior 

excitement and that year, the CHA recognized 

the need for more organization 

within the junior organization, appointing 

a coordinator and adding junior provincial 

associations to the CHA. 

The first national junior show was held 

in 1978 at the University of Manitoba.

Branded Hereford Beef program, “will 

generate enthusiasm among the troops.”

Carmichaels, it was about 20 degrees and 

sunny. A good day to look at cattle. The 

Carmichael bulls were in fine form especially

Final Farewells 

James Brett White 

On March 17, 2010, James Brett White passed 

away to his eternal rest at his home in Boise, 

Idaho surrounded by his loving family. He was 

51 years old. 

Jim was born October 11, 1958 in Nampa, 

ID. The only son of Robert and Pauline White, 

Jim was raised, attended and graduated from 

school in Notus, ID along with his two sisters, 

Cleo and Julie. From an early age, Jim was 

taught the value of hard work and had his first 

job at the ripe old age of 12. This lesson served 

him well throughout his life, as he wore many 

hats along the way providing for his family. In 

1979 he partnered with his parents and bought a 

cattle ranch along the Boise River in Parma, ID. 

JB White Herefords raised registered Hereford 

cattle. It was at this time that he met and fell 

in love with Debbie Edens, his best friend and 

devoted wife of 29 years. Together they raised 

three children; a daughter, Lauren and two sons; 

Jordan & Morgan, in a log home they built with

their own hands. Though Jim & Debbie would 

move two more times, the ranch was always considered 

home; as this lifestyle provided cherished 

memories for the whole family. 

In 1982 Jim started another business, Northwest 

Bull Testing Center, and it became the most 

successful consignment sale of its kind in the 

nation. He operated the test center for 15 years. 

In 1988, always looking for new opportunities 

to provide more for his family, he purchased 

Energy Tactics Fence Company; operating it 

with his dad for 13 years. 

The rest of his life was devoted to his family 

in every way possible. Whether volunteering 

as a coach in summer baseball, YBA basketball 

or helping his kids with 4-H steers, Jim enjoyed 

any activity that his children were involved in. 

Jim was the consummate coach, both on and off 

the playing field and was genuinely interested in 

seeing every kid succeed. Jim was an example 

to his friends and family of a life well-lived; full 

of honesty, hard work and love. 

Jim had a passion for basketball that led 

to a ten year period of coaching in the Parma 

School District, including 4 years as the girl’s

varsity coach and 3 years as the boy’s varsity 

coach. He truly loved the game of basketball 

and considered this time as one of the high 

points of his life. 

In 1998, Jim sold the ranch and soon after, the 

fence business and went to work for Asumendi 

Produce in Wilder. As with everything else he 

had ever done, he put his heart and soul into 

being the best onion salesman around and developed 

a loyal clientele throughout the nation. 

At the age of 46, with his kids grown and a 

little more free time, Jim bought the old Edens’ 

cabin in Donnelly and for two years, prior to his 

diagnosis of cancer, he had the time of his life 

learning to ski at Tamarack. Jim regarded the 

time spent in Donnelly with his family as the 

best time of his life. Whether it was boating on 

the lake, skiing at Tamarack or simply sitting 

around the fire pit, he loved every second he 

spent at the cabin with his family. The time 

spent at the cabin was outshined only by the 

arrival of his first grandchild, Jack. Jack brought 

immeasurable joy to his Papa and continued to 

be the best medicine he could get.

live, which carried him and his family through 

the difficulties of the last several years since his 

diagnosis of kidney cancer. Even at the end of 

his life, his focus remained on his family and their 

well being, tending to details that would prepare 

them for a life without him. 

Jim was a loving family man, with an adventurous 

love for life. He was proud to have such a 

close family that loves and supports one another. 

His joyous personality made a lasting impact on 

everyone he met. 

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Robert 

& Pauline White. He is survived by his wife; 

Debbie, his children; Lauren and Sean Brown, 

Jordan White (Janelle) Morgan White (Ami), 

his only grandchild Jack Brown; his sisters Cleo 

Shaw (Greg) and Julie Asumendi (Domingo); 

his father and mother-in-law Jim & Reva Edens; 

his sister-in-law, Dianne Simpson (Carl); his 

brothers-in-law Scott Edens and Mike Edens 

(Colleen) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bill J. Ellard 

Born May 11, 1934 in a community outside Little 

Rock, AR, He passed away on March 16, 2010. Billy 

Joe Ellard grew up during The Great Depression. The 

family struggled to make ends meet. Billy Joe’s stepfather, 

Clarence Wilson was a train conductor and his 

mother Doris worked odd jobs. Billy Joe and Betty 

Sue, his older sister by two years, often went without 

shoes. Billy Joe or “Joe” as he was known during 

those years graduated from Mabelvale High School 

in 1951. College was out of the question without a 

scholarship so Joe worked odd jobs; construction, 

truck driving, breaking colts. His passion was rodeo 

and he spent all his hard earned money going to rodeos 

where he competed in bronc riding and bull riding. 

Joe was a member of the Air National Guard locally. 

In 1955, he attended NW Community College 

in Senatobia, MS, on a football scholarship. Shortly 

afterwards Joe was drafted into the Army and spent 

his basic training at Fort Chaffee, AR where he was 

a model soldier receiving a letter of commendation 

from the Commander General. From there he transferred 

to Ft. Mead, MD until his discharge in Oct, 

1958.

Billy Joe returned home to Arkansas and once 

again took up rodeo as his favorite past time. A bull 

riding incident side-lined him with broken ribs and 

a collapsed lung and a rather large hospital bill. His 

mother told him “You have to get a job!” 

In December, 1958, Billy Joe went to the local 

Snelling and Snelling employment agency and told 

the interviewer he would do anything except “sell 

insurance.” However his first job interview was with 

Combined Insurance Company of Chicago and when 

the interviewer asked him if he would like to make 

$30.00-$50.00/day, Joe replied, “Lord yes, what do I 

have to do?” January 1, 1959 Billy Joe Ellard became 

an insurance salesman for Combined Insurance under 

the tutorage of W. Clement Stone who Bill attributes 

much of his successes that followed. “I patterned myself 

and my company after Mr. Stone and the business 

principles he instilled in me!” And a dynamic salesman 

Bill became; moving up the ranks from salesman 

to state sales manager to regional sales manager of 

Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Oklahoma. 

In 1970, Bill’s region alone wrote more business 

than the entire teacher division did nationwide 

the year before. Bill was living in Dallas, Texas.

company and in January, 1973, National Teacher Associates, 

Inc. was launched. Today and many schools 

later with hundreds of salesmen licensed; a battery of 

insurance products designed by Bill Ellard; thousands 

of policy holders; business in all 50 states; a home 

office with over 150 employees; NTA, Inc., has developed 

into one of the most successful privately owned 

Life Insurance Companies and Agency in the country. 

Outside the Corporate world, Bill pursued his passion 

for ranching. In 1982, EE Ranches, Inc. was formed. 

Bill and his wife, Jo, has developed nationally acclaimed 

registered Hereford cattle and Championship 

Cutting Horses. Bill served two consecutive terms 

on the Executive Board of Directors of the American 

Hereford Association. 

Bill’s love for animals and passion for helping 

underprivileged children have driven his charitable 

contributions for many years. He has been a major 

contributor to Hereford and Cutting Horse youth programs, 

has provided Christmas gifts to Dallas area 

orphanages, and gifts to animal shelters in addition to 

major contributions to Dallas organizations.
