Now - An "Arms Crawl"
in South America
A low- keyed anns race (dubbed an
"anns crawl " by some) is developing
In South America.
Argentina's pu rchase of 25 outdated
American jets in 1965 started it off. This
alarmed Argentina's age-old antagonist,
Chile. Chi le then contracted to buy 2 l
British jets. Pem has now ordered 24
more-advanced British models. Now
Brazi l wan ts to buy 100 jets from Germany
or elsewhere. Venezuela is said to
be ,. fe-evaluating" its air force needs.
O nce again the United States is caught
in lhe midd le. W ashington is striving to
become the sole supplier of air a nTIS.
It can th us "control the escalation," as
the argument goes, by parcel ing out a
few jets here, a few there, and so on.
Throughout Latin America a veritable
Pandora's box of problems could erupt
at any g iven time.
Venezuela has been under ma rtial
law for weeks. An invasion of Haiti
b)' disgruntled exi les is imn~ in e nt.
And based in Miami, florida, alone,
are revolutionary groups aiming to
overthrow FIVE Latin American governments!
And bord er disputes?
You wouldn't belie l ie the utterl y
absurd border claims some Latin countries
have against their neighbors.
Venezuela claims that two thirds of
newl )' independent Guyana is " hi storicall
y" Venezuelan territory. To make it
worse, Surinam, on G uyana's eastern
Aank would li ke a portion of the remaining
third.
Ecuador and Peru ha ve a longstanding
border squabble. Bolivia wants
the Antofagasta region back from Chile.
It's almost laughable. But what if
these clai ms are backed up with modern
jet planes and other sophisticated weapons?

T iroleans demand eventual reunion
with their fo rmer homeland.
Almost each night brings new reports
of blown-up power stations, or of explosions
in ltalian police barracks. The
once- lucrative tour ist trade 111 the
beautiFu l, Italian Alpine area is nearl y
dead .
W hat a pity men refuse to live at
peace wi th ead l other !
Yet strange as it might seem, there
