HEF Celebration of Excellence
Celebrating Success – The Hanover Way
On October 29, the Hanover Education Foundation (HEF)
hosted the 11th Annual Celebration of Excellence in Education.
The event was held at the Omni Richmond Hotel to honor
outstanding Hanover educators and community members
whose significant contributions have supported major education initiatives
of Hanover County Public Schools (HCPS). The Hanover County School
Board and government leaders joined Superintendent of Schools Stewart
Roberson, school staff members, and community business partners to
celebrate awards and recognition garnered by Hanover County teachers,
administrators and support staff over the past year.
Music for the evening was provided by the Lee-Davis High School
Chamber ensemble directed by Jennifer Breeden. The colors were
presented by Atlee & Hanover High School AFJROTC Color Guard under
the direction of Lt. Col. Charles Schmetzer.
Altria Group, Inc., Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center,
Kings Dominion, and Patrick Pontiac Buick GMC were the major sponsors
of the evening. Table sponsors included: Ashland Milling Company,
BB&T, BCWH Architects, Bank of America, Battlefield Commons LLC,
Bear Island Paper Company, Frank Bradley, Cavalier International, Inc.,
Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc., EVB, Hanover Career Student Resource, Inc.,

Candid Color.
George Herring, English teacher at Atlee High School was honored
as the Hanover Teacher of the Year. Owen Matthews of Kings Dominion
presented Mr. Herring with unlimited family visits for the 2010 season.
He also was awarded the use of a new vehicle of his choosing from
Patrick Pontiac Buick GMC shortly after being chosen as Hanover
Teacher of the Year.
The Mechanicsville Rotary once again partnered with the Hanover
Education Foundation to award teachers with monetary gifts. David Fuller,
past president of the Rotary, presented the teachers with their awards.
Other awards and recognitions that were presented at the Celebration
of Excellence included the HEF 2010 Superlative Supporter Award, given
to Michael Patrick from Patrick Pontiac Buick GMC, the Superintendent’s
Professional Development Award, Beginning Teachers of the Year Awards,
REB Awards, National Board Certification Recognitions, Hanover Support
Employee of the Year, Creative Instructional Grant Awards, and the
Excellence-in-Educational Leadership Awards.
“The theme for the evening was Celebrating Success — The Hanover
Way. Thanks to the support of all of our sponsors, we were able to
celebrate the talents and creativity of Hanover’s excellent teachers and
educational leaders. It was truly a night to remember,” said Margaret Hill,
Executive Director of the HEF.
