Mission
To provide our students with unparalleled educational
opportunities and experiences by augmenting existing tax and
grant-based funds.
Goals
• Be a dynamic and responsive mechanism for
meeting changing educational challenges and needs
of Hanover County.
• Encourage innovative educational programs of direct
benefit to teachers and students.
• Serve as a non-profit body to solicit and receive taxdeductible
funds from those sharing and supporting
a continuing vision of excellence for Hanover County
Public Schools.
Initiatives
• Creative Instructional Grants to teachers to encourage
and stimulate creativity in effective teaching.
• Professional Development Grants for teachers to
expand their knowledge and skills which they can
transfer to the classroom.
• Scholarships for our students to pursue training and
educational opportunities beyond high school.
• Matching Grant Funds to leverage the Foundation’s
funds for district-wide or school-based
enhancements.
• Grants for students and teachers to compete or
participate in a significant manner in state or national
competitions or meetings.

It’s difficult to believe my tenure as President of the Hanover
Education Foundation has come to an end this year and six years
have passed since I became an active board member of the
Foundation. I can say without reservation that I have received more
from my association with the Foundation than I have given to it. The
gifts granted by the Foundation and the work that it does for the Hanover
County School System will never cease to amaze me. Our community is lucky to benefit from the
actions and commitment of our Foundation, board members and staff.
The work of the Foundation on behalf of Hanover Schools could not be accomplished or be
as successful if it were not for the tireless, selfless commitment and vision of the Foundation board
members, its staff of Margaret Hill and Anita Floyd, and our community. I wish to extend my sincere
appreciation to all of the board members, Margaret and Anita for their continued dedication and
hard work to make the goals of the Foundation successful. I would also like to thank the generosity of
Patrick Pontiac Buick GMC, The Supply Room Companies, Verizon Foundation, Altria Client Services,
Inc., and the Wacker-Neusom Corporation for their corporate gifts.
News for 2008-2009:
• The Foundation gave over $25,000 in scholarships to 24 Hanover County students.
• The Foundation raised $414,932 in revenues and pledges.
• The Foundation awarded $15,000 to fund grants and assist teachers in the classroom thanks to a
grant from Altria.
• Michael Patrick, General Manager of Patrick Pontiac Buick GMC, presented Carol Beazley, Hanover
Teacher of the Year, with the use of a new vehicle for one year also covering the maintenance and
the insurance. The Supply Room Companies presented Carol with a $2,000 gas allowance check
for the year. This is the second year in a row that Patrick Pontiac and The Supply Room Companies
have made these gifts. These gifts are a great example of the support that the Foundation receives
from the community.
• The Verizon Foundation gave the Foundation $24,000 to be used to support the Reading Olympics.
• Wacker-Neusom Corporation of Minomonee Falls, Wisconsin, donated a liquid cooled diesel power
light tower to The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology through the Foundation. This piece
of equipment is valued at $12,800 and will be used to assist students to learn about innovative
technology in the construction equipment industry.
It has been my honor and privilege to be associated with the Hanover Education Foundation. The
success of the Foundation is based on the support and involvement of our community, for which, I
thank you.

HEF Celebration of Excellence
Hanover County Schools and Hanover Education Foundation
On October 30, the Hanover Education
Foundation (HEF) hosted the 10th
Annual Celebration of Excellence in
Education. The event was held at
the Omni Richmond Hotel to honor outstanding
Hanover educators and community members
whose significant contributions have supported
major education initiatives of Hanover County
Public Schools (HCPS). The Hanover County
School Board and government leaders joined
Superintendent of Schools Stewart Roberson,
school staff members, and community business
partners to celebrate awards and recognition
garnered by Hanover County teachers, administrators
and support staff over the past year.
Music for the evening was provided by the
Hanover High School Chamber Singers directed
by James Barrack. The colors were presented
by the Atlee & Hanover High School's AFJROTC
Color Guard under the direction of Lt. Col.
Charles Schmetzer.

The Mechanicsville Rotary once again partnered
with the Hanover Education Foundation to
award teachers with monetary gifts. Norm Sklar,
past president of the Rotary, presented the teachers
with their awards.
Other awards and recognitions were presented
at the Celebration of Excellence including
the HEF 2009 Superlative Supporter Award, given
to Bob Mills and Jim McCalla from Moseley
Architects, the Superintendent’s Professional
Development Award, Beginning Teachers of
the Year Awards, REB Awards, National Board
Certification Recognitions, Hanover Support
Employee of the Year, Creative Instructional
Grant Awards, and the Excellence-in-Educational
Leadership Awards. Also, special recognition
of Hanover’s Teachers of the Year from 1982 -
2009 was part of the celebration.
“The theme for the evening was Standing
on the Shoulders of Giants. Thanks to the support
of our sponsors, we were able to celebrate
the talents and creativity of Hanover’s excellent
teachers and educational leaders. It was
truly a night to remember,” said Margaret Hill,
Executive Director of the HEF.

Hanover Education
Foundation Hosts
Annual Bowl for
Education
On Saturday, January 10, 2009, fortyfive
teams representing every Hanover
school, the Hanover County School
Board, Hanover County Government, several
local businesses, the central office, and the
Hanover Education Foundation (HEF) gathered
at the AMF Hanover Lanes on Bell Creek Road
to “Bowl for Education.” The HEF raised over
$19,000 to support grants and scholarships for
Hanover County students and teachers.
The first place trophy went to the team from
Atlee High School, The Atlee Rolling Raiders
(Scott Csoke, Eric Leise, Ryan Brugger, Logan
Smith). The second place trophy went to the
Liberty Eagles from Liberty Middle School (Dan
McGraw, Paul Heizer, Matt Bobbitt, Jeremy
Stone). The third place trophy went to the
Rural Point Rollers from Rural Point Elementary
School (Dianne Tuck, Chip Tuck, Joncie
Albright, Jason Byrd). Ryan Brugger, student at
Atlee High School, received the trophy for highest
score in a game for a male and Nancy Lutton
from Stonewall Jackson Middle School received
the trophy for highest score in a game for a
female.
According to Margaret Hill, Executive
Director of the HEF, everyone had a great time
spending their Saturday morning at the bowling
alley bowling for a good cause. “With the
generosity of our local businesses and the hard
work and support of the principals and team
coordinators, the event was a huge success,”
said Ms. Hill. “It’s always great to see folks
having a good time at an event that benefits our
students,” she said.

12th Annual Golf Tournament Raises More Than $38,000
On June 18, 2009, 38 teams competed in the 12th Annual
Superintendent’s Business Advisory Committee (BAC) Golf
Tournament held at the Hanover Country Club in Hanover
County. This event would not be possible without the continued
support of our many sponsors. For the sixth year, the tournament
was divided into two flights raising more than $38,000 to support
Hanover County Public Schools. Tournament winners were:

The Board, Superintendent, and the Hanover Education Foundation (HEF) have awarded
the 2008-2009 Superintendent’s Professional Development Scholarship to Rebecca Creasey, a
6th grade teacher at Stonewall Jackson Middle School.
Ms. Creasey who teaches Life and Environmental Science will use this scholarship
to attend the Smithsonian National Zoological Park Conservation and Research Center’s
“Watershed Academy” this summer. The academy takes participants on a journey from the
foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Front Royal, Virginia to Washington, D.C., exploring
a variety of topics including watersheds, geology, water quality, biodiversity, history and
government. The second part of her plan is to travel to the islands of Smith and Tangier and
participate in a course offered through the Chesapeake Bay Foundation focusing on issues
facing the Chesapeake Bay. Ms. Creasey feels that participation in these courses will not only
enhance her background knowledge but also assist her in achieving her goal of teaching students
the importance of keeping our environment healthy.
Ms. Creasey will share her experiences with other teachers in Hanover at an appropriate
professional development session. The 2009 award was made at the January 13 meeting of
the Hanover County School Board.

Gifts That Make a Difference for Hanover Students
HEF Receives Donations for The Hanover Center for
Trades and Technology
Two businesses recently made gifts to the Hanover Education Foundation that
will be used at The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology.
Kings Dominion presented a check for $9,000 to the HEF at it’s March
Board of Directors meeting that will be used to support The Hanover Center for
Trades and Technology as well as other Foundation initiatives.
“We are grateful for the generosity of Kings Dominion,” said Margaret Hill,
HEF Executive Director. “They continue to demonstrate a committment to our
students and our community through their support of education.”
The Wacker-Neuson Corporation of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, has
donated a liquid cooled, diesel powered light tower to The Hanover Center
for Trades and Technology to assist the students as they learn about innovative
technology in the construction equipment industry. The equipment will allow
students to have hands-on experience with a machine that is used to create light
and temporary power on construction sites.
On June 4, Mike Grevey, District Manager for Wacker-Neuson, and Ed
Filipowski, Metro Job Site Specialist, donated the equipment through the
Hanover Education Foundation for the school for use in the building trades and
small engine programs. They plan to visit the school again in the near future to
see the students who are interested in careers in the construction industry.
“We thank Wacker-Neuson for providing our students such a valuable
opportunity, and we look forward to working with them on future projects,”
said Hill.
