continued from page 20 6. Postpone important decisions until the depression has lifted. Before deciding to make a significant change discuss it with others who know you well. 7. People rarely snap out of depression, but they can feel a little better each day. 8. Remember, positive thinking will replace negative thinking as your depression responds to treatment. 9. Let your family and friends help you. The most frequent treatment for depressive symptoms that have progressed beyond the mild stage is antidepressant medication which provides relatively quick symptom relief, coupled with ongoing psychotherapy, that can offer new strategies for a more satisfying life. A psychologist or psychiatrist can assess your condition and arrive at the treatment most appropriate for you. Respite care, positive feedback from others, positive self-talk and recreational activities are helpful in avoiding depression. Look for classes and support groups to help you learn or practice effective problem-solving and coping strategies needed for caregiving. New Orleans Plays Host to Society for Neuroscience More than 28,000 neurologists from around the world flooded downtown New Orleans for Neuroscience 2003, the annual conference organized by the Society for Neuroscience. Held from Saturday, November 8 through Wednesday, November 12, this prestigious gathering brought together scientists of all ages dedicated to investigating issues surrounding the brain. Neuroscience 2003 provided an excellent opportunity for investigators working on a variety of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Huntington’s, Parkinson’s and ALS, to share the results of their research and discuss ways in which findings for one disease could significantly impact and benefit others. In addition, this five day gathering provided young scientists with an opportunity to learn more about the field of neurology and the exciting research options available. HDSA provided information about programs and services for Huntington’s Disease as well as distributed information about HDSA Grants & Fellowships available for 2004/2005. Of significant note, thirteen of HDSA’s 17 Coalition for the Cure investigators were asked to present finding from recently published articles during the conference, many in the form of question-and-answer poster sessions. Of these thirteen, six were asked to give brief lectures on their study results, thus confirming not only the great respect held by HDSA Coalition for the Cure investigators by the neurological research community but also the importance of their work. 32
