Concerns <strong>in</strong> <strong>HD</strong><br />

COMMUNICATION<br />

Although there are many potential causes for behavior difficulties, the number one reason for any problem<br />

is poor communication. It is important to recognize that communication problems are not unique to <strong>HD</strong>.<br />

Lead<strong>in</strong>g marriage therapists say that poor communication is the number one reason for divorce; some<br />

sociologists believe that poor communication is the foundation for <strong>in</strong>ternational tension and, possibly, war.<br />

Over the years, several strategies have been developed to assist people with communication. Radio, television,<br />

newspapers, magaz<strong>in</strong>es, telephones, cell phones, pagers, computers, the Internet, e-mail, fax mach<strong>in</strong>es, video<br />

tape and audio tape have all been created or used to assist <strong>in</strong> communication. So, even without <strong>HD</strong>,<br />

communication is challeng<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

DEFINITION<br />

Communication, or the transfer of <strong>in</strong>formation from one person to another, requires a complex<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegration of thought, muscle control, and breath<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>HD</strong> can impair all three of these functions. There are<br />

two ma<strong>in</strong> aspects to communication: gett<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> (understand<strong>in</strong>g) and gett<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

out (express<strong>in</strong>g).<br />

POSSIBLE CAUSES OF MISCOMMUNICATION<br />

Communication with a person affected by <strong>HD</strong> can be a difficult task because the ma<strong>in</strong> aspects of<br />

communication can be impaired by the disease. The most prom<strong>in</strong>ent language difficulties <strong>in</strong> people with <strong>HD</strong><br />

are:<br />

• Speak<strong>in</strong>g clearly (articulation)<br />

• Start<strong>in</strong>g conversation (<strong>in</strong>itiation)<br />

• Organiz<strong>in</strong>g what is to be said<br />

• <strong>Understand<strong>in</strong>g</strong> what is be<strong>in</strong>g said
