2.2 Multiple primary neoplasms<br />

Multiple primary neoplasm is the occurrence of two or more primary cancers<br />

in an individual. Survivors of early stage cancers have an approximately 14% chance of<br />

developing second primary cancer and this risk is even higher for the survivors of early<br />

stage HNSCC as described above 5, 21 . In 1889, Billroth first described the occurrence<br />

of second primary cancer of stomach in a patient after treatment of epithelioma of<br />

external ear 22 . However multiple primary malignant tumours remained medical<br />

curiosities until 1932 when Warren and Gates identified around 1000 cases of MPN in<br />

literature or encountered them in post-mortem examinations 23 .<br />
