POSITION PURPOSE
Port Macquarie Airport is a Certified Aerodrome operated by Port
Macquarie – Hastings Council in accordance with Civil Aviation Safety
Authority (CASA) rules and regulations. As a key member of the airport
operations team, the Airport Operations Officer is responsible for
promoting a safe operating environment for aircraft and other users at the
Airport.
The Airport Operations Officer will develop and apply technical skills and
regulatory procedures for the following key functions in accordance with
the Airport Operations Manual and Australian Government aviation
regulations (incl. CASA, Airservices Australia, and the Office of Transport
Security (OTS)):
Aerodrome serviceability inspections and reporting functions, Works
Safety Officer functions, aviation security oversight, routine
maintenance activities and customer service.
In carrying out these functions, the Airport Operations Officer is
responsible for providing advice to the Senior Airport Officer and/or the
Airport Operations Coordinator in relation to the safety and operational
status of the Airport, including operational safety, security, maintenance,
and customer service standards.
All staff operating in safety sensitive airside areas at the Airport must
conform to the requirements of the Airport Drug and Alcohol Management
Plan (DAMP). The successful applicant must undergo an Alcohol and
Other Drugs (AOD) medical test prior to commencing employment and
may Plant be Electrical subject to random AOD testing conducted by CASA or Council
while employed at the Airport. A copy of the DAMP is available for perusal
on request.
The position operates within a 7-day roster (ordinary hours Monday –
Sunday, including up to every 2 nd weekend) with 76 hours worked per
fortnight. Saturday and Sunday shifts may extend up to 12 hours per day
subject to operational requirements. The Airport Operations Officer will
also be required to participate in an after hours and weekend on-call
roster.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential Requirements:
1. Demonstrated experience and competencies to meet the national competency
standards defined for Aerodrome Inspection, Reporting and Works Safety (to meet
CASA accreditation by successful completion of an Airport Operations Training Course
to Aerodrome Reporting Officer (ARO) and Works Safety Officer (WSO) level) – see
AC 139-13(0) August 2011.
2. An ability to apply the standards and practices applying to the ARO and WSO
functions, as set out in the Port Macquarie Airport Operations Manual and standard
operating procedures.
3. An ability and willingness to:
- work hours commensurate with the requirements for Aerodrome Inspection,
Reporting and Works Safety, including times such as early mornings, late evenings,
weekends (and nights for overnight construction works) and public holidays, and
- reside in a location within 15 minutes travel time from the Airport to enable a prompt
response to emergency incidents when rostered ‘on call’.
4. Sound knowledge and understanding of airport geography, aircraft operations, daily
airport serviceability inspection, reporting and works safety procedures, aviation
security operations, terminal and car park operations, aerodrome operational
maintenance standards and procedures.
5. Experience in aerodrome routine maintenance activities and operational serviceability
(or similar), along with operation of light plant and equipment (incl. certificates in the
operation of tractors, front-end loaders (FEL), chainsaws, and application of
herbicides).
6. Sound understanding of Work Health and Safety (WHS) issues and requirements.
7. High standard of written and oral communications skills.
8. Well-developed record keeping and customer service skills.
9. NSW Class C driver’s licence.
10. Successfully complete an Office of Transport Security background check in order to
obtain an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC).
11. Aircraft Radio Operator Certificate of Proficiency.
12. NSW Firearms Licence Category A and B.

Desirable Requirements:
Where a ‘desirable’ qualification or skill listed below is not possessed by the applicant, the
applicant must have the ability to qualify and/or acquire the skill within 3 months of
commencement of employment.
1. Knowledge of, and an ability to apply the standards and practices required by the
Department of Infrastructure and Transport, as set out in the Port Macquarie Airport
Transport Security Program (TSP) and standard operating procedures.
2. Experience in response to Aviation Security incidents and response to Airport
Emergency Procedures including safe handling of hazardous materials (dangerous
goods).
3. First Aid Certificate.
4. Sound competency in standard Council software packages such as MS Word, Excel
and Outlook, and specialised airport operations systems (including security, car park
management etc).

You are required to comply with Council’s policies & procedures, and relevant legislation
(including CASA, Airservices Australia, and the Office of Transport Security (OTS)) as
outlined in your letter of offer, or as applicable to your position.

accordance with aerodrome operational

repairs to runway pavement and other
aircraft movement areas; rolling / earthworks;
mowing of grassed areas; application of
herbicide; removal of foreign objects and
debris (FOD); repairs to soft / wet surfaces;
replacement of markers, markings and
lighting; and other general landside civil and
landscaping maintenance.
