A Transportation Plan for the Greenleaf Terrace Neighborhood

Neighborhood Demographic Data
According to the US Census, the 2000 2 population for the study area was 1001
individuals. The median age in Greenleaf Terrace was 38.1, as compared to 35.7 for
Virginia as a whole. Table 1 shows the percentages of individuals in selected age groups
in 2000:

As is evidenced by Table 1, about 14% of the neighborhood population was school age
(5-17 years of age), a factor that raises significant traffic safety issues. 34% of the
population was in the typically more physically active age range of 18 to 39 years, while
11% of the population was between 65 and 84 years of age and likely more dependant
upon transportation alternatives to the automobile.
To aid in the preparation of this plan, an informal survey was conducted of neighborhood
residents. The following three questions were asked of the residents:
1) Do you have access to an automobile?
2) Do you cycle regularly?
3) Do you walk regularly?
4) Do you ride the bus regularly?
