Figure 18: Occasional Setbacks provide for plazas, courtyards and other forms of open space Building Materials It is important for the exterior facades of buildings, especially sides fronting the street, to be constructed of high-quality, visually-appealing materials appropriate to a village setting. This includes brick, stone, stucco and other comparable materials. Inferior material, such as vinyl and sheet metal would detract from this character and should not be allowed on buildings in the Village Center. All buildings along the pedestrian corridor in the Village center do not need to be built in the same material. Also, individual buildings need not necessarily be limited to one or the other, but may utilize combination of these materials. For instance, the first floor may be built of stone and top stories built of brick. Sidewalks Sidewalks are an integral component of the built environment, especially one that is well-suited for pedestrian activity. Sidewalks should be a minimum of five feet in width; they should be able to accommodate the passing of two individuals A Master Plan for Courthouse Village Page 59 of 96 Spring, 2006 Goochland County
traveling in the opposite direction. This minimum width requirement also allows for the planting of street trees without compromising space needed for pedestrian movement. Sidewalks built within the Village Center should be constructed of more elaborate materials/design to contribute to the Core’s distinguished sense of place.
