The median income of Goochland County (Table 3) compared to other localities
in Central Virginia shows similar results to the per capita income in terms of
ranking for financial assistance on community facilities and infrastructure
projects. As of 1998, Goochland ranked 16th highest in the Commonwealth for
median household income compared to 18th for Powhatan County, 12th for
Hanover County, and 26th for Henrico County. The difference between
Goochland County and Virginia and between Goochland and the United States in
1998 was 27% and 39%, respectively.

Employment
Goochland County has experienced significant growth in employment over the
past ten years. From 1990 to 1999, non-farm employment has increased from
4,924 to 8,739, almost 80% (Table 4). The relocation of Capital One and other
employers to the West Creek complex has added another 6,000 jobs since its
completion (see Table 6).
The majority of employment in Goochland County has been in the service
industry and in state and local government. These two industries account for
nearly 45% of all employment. Another telling statistic is that construction ranks
a close third to state and local government employment and has increased
133%, 177%, and 42% over the past three decades, respectively. These
increases indicate that new growth is a major factor in the county and looks to
remain so for years. The economic conditions of the past few years have been
favorable in terms of providing additional employment in Goochland County.
Unemployment rates have been below three percent for the past six years and
below two percent the last two years.
