Education
The program prepares future teachers to work with Childhood (1 st – 6 th grade),
Middle Childhood (5 th – 9 th grade), and Adolescence students (7 th -12 th grade) in
23 teacher certification programs. The program is selective, as it aspires to train
future leaders in education. Hartwick’s education program is based on four
axioms: 1) Effective pre-service teachers show competence in their academic
major by maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or better, 2) Hartwick’s Curriculum XXI
firmly grounds students in the liberal arts, 3) Effective teacher training operates
from research-based principles of teaching-learning, and 4) Effective teachers
integrate those principles into meaningful experiences in classrooms.
There are teaching and educational opportunities with schools in the central New
York area, Albany, Binghamton, New York City, the island of Anguilla, Austria,
Great Britain, and Puerto Rico. These settings provide opportunities for real
world teaching experiences in rural and urban school settings.
Hands-on teaching experiences are a central part of Hartwick’s education
program. There are many effective ways of learning and the Education
Department offers a variety of options to education students including:
internships, study abroad, volunteer service work, the education work-study
program, multicultural-urban internships, field experience, and directed studies
with professors. We encourage students to design, develop, and implement an
educational program that is consistent with their interests and preparation, and
long-term professional goals.

Our program attempts to train educators who are committed to being agents for
social justice, particularly through educational policy and practice. Our
department takes for granted that education is the primary means to life success.
Therefore, schools must mitigate against the conditions that threaten equal
opportunity and academic achievement due to irrelevant reasons (ethnicity, class,
gender, religion, ability). If schools are to adequately fulfill this responsibility
then teacher training programs play an important role in exposing prospective
teachers to issues and views relevant to the task.
Beyond developing a commitment to social justice, students are expected to
maintain academic excellence, display a passion for teaching, exhibit leadership
qualities, and possess high professional standards.

1. demonstrate competency in their chosen subject area and have
mastered their content area.
2. possess skills for critical, reflective thinking and knowledge of the social,
political, cultural, psychological, philosophical and moral dimensions of
teaching.
3. possess a broad, interdisciplinary liberal arts and sciences education
which provides the foundation for competent teaching.
