enhance students’ aesthetic awareness and further develop their<br />

sensibilities <strong>of</strong> design as it relates to communication in both traditional<br />

and digital media technologies. As subjects in a consumer culture who are<br />

immersed in the spectacle <strong>of</strong> a seemingly endless proliferation <strong>of</strong> texts<br />

and images, the information obtained in this course will be invaluable to<br />

anyone who wishes to critically consider and /or plans to contribute to<br />

visual communication and culture. Prerequisite: Art 113: Drawing I or Art<br />

115: 2-Dimensional Design.<br />

214 Papermaking Workshop (4 credits) Students make images on<br />

and with handmade paper. Diverse techniques <strong>of</strong> manipulating handmade<br />

paper are explored: sheet-forming, laminations, use <strong>of</strong> vacuum table,<br />

casting and spraying <strong>of</strong> three-dimensional forms, and handmade paper<br />

books. Students are expected to produce both individual works and<br />

editions. Offered alternate years. Prerequisite: Art 113 and 115 or<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor. (CPA)<br />

215 Illustration (4 credits) This course focuses on the creation <strong>of</strong><br />

provocative visual images that are able to compete in the commercial<br />

market. It begins with analyses <strong>of</strong> illustrators past and present and<br />

proceeds to outline pr<strong>of</strong>essional methods for executing and presenting<br />

work. Through exposure to a variety <strong>of</strong> media and techniques, practical<br />

studio assignments, slide presentations and field trips, students gather<br />

the knowledge and experience to prepare them for employment in the<br />

field. Also covered are methods <strong>of</strong> production, avenues for expression and<br />

preparation <strong>of</strong> one’s resumé and portfolio. Appropriate for students with<br />

drawing and/or painting skills seeking commercial direction to<br />

market their talents, as well as further development <strong>of</strong> basic skills.<br />

Prerequisites: Art 113 or 115. Offered every other year. Can be used as one<br />

<strong>of</strong> the courses in the drawing concentration with special permission.<br />

216 Digital Art & Design II: Digital Imaging (4 credits) This course<br />

will investigate the mass proliferation <strong>of</strong> images in western, consumer<br />

culture. Students will explore how these images are created, reasons for<br />

their creation, and the functions they serve. Students will appropriate,<br />

capture and create images through digital processes involving the use <strong>of</strong><br />

scanners, digital cameras, and industry standard image manipulation<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware. This course will encourage hands-on investigation into the<br />

techniques used for the manipulation <strong>of</strong> images and how these<br />

manipulated images affect and construct our very day realities.<br />

Prerequisite: Art 213.<br />

217 Drawing/Works on Paper (4 credits) Working with paper as a<br />

surface to receive drawings and as a design material in itself, students<br />

explore new media and more advanced concepts. Course focuses on<br />

investigations into contemporary issues, and includes some drawing from<br />

the figure and other sources, with a goal <strong>of</strong> developing stronger and more<br />

personal visual statements. Students may work on projects that integrate<br />

other techniques such as printmaking, photography, illustration,<br />

papermaking, etc. Prerequisite: Art 113 and 115, or by permission <strong>of</strong><br />

instructor. Course is an alternative core requirement for studio art<br />

majors. Can be taken at the 300-level with permission <strong>of</strong> instructor to<br />

fulfill intermediate level in drawing sequence for students concentrating<br />

in drawing.<br />
