introduces students to art history as a discipline by focusing on art<br />

historical methods and approaches. Suitable for non-majors. (CPA or<br />

NTW)<br />

113 Drawing 1 (2credits) Using black and white media as well as color<br />

media, students work on advanced skills and development <strong>of</strong> content in<br />

drawing during this seven-week course. Because the formal elements<br />

(line, shape, value, texture, color, etc.) are investigated more deeply,<br />

emphasis is placed upon creative pursuit <strong>of</strong> compositional variety, visual<br />

cohesiveness, and the significant issues <strong>of</strong> content. Images and issues<br />

from a wide range <strong>of</strong> cultural, historical, and contemporary contexts are<br />

examined. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional presentation <strong>of</strong> completed work is included. This<br />

is a core course <strong>of</strong>fered for art majors. Those who declare later should<br />

take Art 113 as soon as possible in their academic career. (CPA) A section<br />

<strong>of</strong> this course is <strong>of</strong>fered as a FYS for incoming declared majors as a core<br />

course and it should be taken in combination with Art 115 2-D Design.<br />

115 2-Dimensional Design (2credits) Using black and white media as<br />

well as color paint, students explore basic concepts in 2D design during<br />

this 7 weeks course. The formal elements, their qualities and interactions<br />

(line, shape, value, texture, mass, color, pictorial space, etc.) are<br />

investigated in the creative pursuit <strong>of</strong> compositional variety, visual<br />

cohesiveness, and issues <strong>of</strong> meaningful content. Images and issues from a<br />

wide range <strong>of</strong> perceptual, cultural, historical, and contemporary contexts<br />

will be examined. Recommended for non-majors or those with little<br />

previous experience as well as those who declare the studio major after<br />

their first semester at <strong>Hartwick</strong>. (CPA) A section <strong>of</strong> this course is <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

as a FYS for incoming declared majors as a core course and it should be<br />

taken in combination with Art 113: Drawing I.<br />

114 Drawing II (2 credits) Students continue to explore the possibilities <strong>of</strong><br />

drawing materials, using major subjects such as still life, interior space,<br />

landscape, and the figure. Although the basic elements <strong>of</strong> picture-making (line,<br />

shape, value, color, texture, mass) receive due consideration, emphasis is placed<br />

on the development <strong>of</strong> composition, subject matter and ideas in order to seek a<br />

balance between the advance <strong>of</strong> technical skills and the development <strong>of</strong> content.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional presentation <strong>of</strong> finished drawings will be included. The course<br />

emphasizes solving problems creatively by employing compositional variety and<br />

cohesiveness. Open to students with art backgrounds or previous experience.<br />

Recommended for students with previous drawing experience. Prerequisite: Art<br />

113. (CPA)<br />

118 Web Development/Portfolio (4 credits) This course is intended<br />

to provide the opportunity for students to produce a complete Web site<br />

that will aesthetically present the work from their college career. The<br />

course will involve readings in contemporary Web thinking, addressing<br />

Web culture, business and future uses, training in the latest version <strong>of</strong><br />

Macromedia Dreamweaver, deployment <strong>of</strong> individual Web sites, and<br />

training in the ongoing management <strong>of</strong> the site.<br />

165 3-Dimensional Design (2credits) This course is an introduction to basic<br />

elements <strong>of</strong> design in 3 dimensions. The students will explore the use <strong>of</strong> line,<br />

mass, volume, implied motion, color and other design elements using wire, wood,<br />

plaster and mixed media construction. To accomplish these goals the students<br />
