Statement <strong>of</strong> Educational Objectives<br />

The following statement <strong>of</strong> educational objectives has been adopted by the<br />

<strong>Hartwick</strong> <strong>College</strong> faculty and approved by the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees:<br />

<strong>Hartwick</strong> <strong>College</strong> is a four-year, independent, coeducational liberal arts<br />

and sciences college, which accepts students as candidates for the<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts and Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science degrees, regardless <strong>of</strong> age, race,<br />

sex, creed, or physical handicap. It provides instruction in, and stresses<br />

the relatedness <strong>of</strong>, the humanities, the social and behavioral sciences and<br />

the natural sciences; it emphasizes intellectual excellence, ethical values<br />

and effective and responsible participation in a democratic society.<br />

<strong>Hartwick</strong> provides opportunities for students:<br />

• To expand their awareness <strong>of</strong> the world by exposure to intellectual<br />

perspectives <strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> disciplines and to the content and<br />

historical roots <strong>of</strong> their own and other cultures.<br />

• To acquire depth <strong>of</strong> knowledge in one or more areas <strong>of</strong><br />

specialization.<br />

• To learn the disciplined and discriminating use <strong>of</strong> evidence in<br />

making decisions and solving problems.<br />

• To gain an appreciation <strong>of</strong> creative processes in the arts and<br />

sciences, and to develop their own creative abilities and give<br />

expression to them.<br />

• To achieve self-reliance and to develop their personal styles,<br />

values and beliefs in a manner consistent with becoming<br />

responsible and productive individuals.<br />

These goals are among the objectives <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> the educational activities <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>College</strong>, both curricular and extracurricular. They are sought by<br />

various means with varying emphases, and in ways which are appropriate<br />

to the individual specializations <strong>of</strong> the students. The faculty and staff <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Hartwick</strong> <strong>College</strong> assist students in identifying and achieving these goals<br />

through instruction, advice, guidance and example.<br />

Accreditation and Affiliations<br />

<strong>Hartwick</strong> is an independent college operating under a charter granted by<br />

the Regents <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> the State <strong>of</strong> New York. Control <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>College</strong> is vested in its Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees, and its academic programs are<br />

registered with the New York State Department <strong>of</strong> Education, Office <strong>of</strong><br />

Higher Education, Room 979, Education Building Annex, Albany, NY<br />

12230, 518-474-5851.<br />

The <strong>College</strong> is accredited by the Middle States Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>College</strong>s and<br />

Schools. The degree programs in art and art history are accredited by the<br />

National Association <strong>of</strong> Schools <strong>of</strong> Art and Design. The bachelor <strong>of</strong> science<br />

degree program in chemistry is approved by the American Chemical<br />

Society. The degree programs in music and music education are<br />

accredited by the National Association <strong>of</strong> Schools <strong>of</strong> Music and the music<br />

department has an active chapter <strong>of</strong> Pi Kappa Lambda, a national music<br />
