332 Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Religion (3 credits)What is religion? Is there a<br />

God? What is the value <strong>of</strong> religious experience? Is it possible to be<br />

religious without being superstitious? Answers to these and related<br />

questions will be examined in the analytical manner appropriate to<br />

philosophy.<br />

370 Religion and Society (3 credits) (same as Soci 370) A sociological<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> religious belief systems utilizing the comparative or crosscultural<br />

approach; social aspects <strong>of</strong> religion and religious aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

society; the impact <strong>of</strong> social and ecological forces upon religious<br />

institutions; social origins <strong>of</strong> religions; the role <strong>of</strong> religion in social control<br />

and social change. Prerequisite: Soci 105. (SBA)<br />

490 Senior Thesis (3 credits) Required <strong>of</strong> all majors.<br />

Religious Studies<br />

Requirements for the major: A departmentally approved program <strong>of</strong><br />

nine courses in religious studies, including:<br />

One term <strong>of</strong> directed study (the senior thesis)<br />

The following philosophy courses may count toward the major:<br />

332 Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Religion<br />

336 Ethics<br />

B.A. in Philosophy and Religious Studies<br />

Students wishing to combine an interest in the study <strong>of</strong> philosophy with<br />

religious studies can pursue one <strong>of</strong> three degree options:<br />

1) an 18-course dual degree, writing two senior theses so as to obtain both<br />

a B.A. in Philosophy and a B.A. in Religious Studies (please review<br />

additional requirements for completing a second degree in the<br />

Educational Policies & Procedures section <strong>of</strong> the catalog);<br />

2) a nine-course major (with senior thesis) in one program and a six<br />

course minor in the other; or<br />

3) a 14-course B.A. in Philosophy and Religious Studies, with one senior<br />

thesis bridging both disciplines. Students should meet with members <strong>of</strong><br />

the Department <strong>of</strong> Philosophy and Religious Studies to design the degree<br />

program that best suits their interests.<br />

Grades for all courses taken in religious studies and Phil 332, 336 (if<br />

taken) are used to calculate the average in the major for Departmental<br />

Distinction.<br />

Requirements for the minor: A departmentally approved program <strong>of</strong><br />

six courses in religious studies.<br />
