Membership and seating in the ensemble are determined by audition at the<br />

beginning <strong>of</strong> the Fall and the Spring semesters. The <strong>Hartwick</strong> Sinfonietta is a<br />

group embedded in the Wind Ensemble, dedicated to expand its repertoire to<br />

include music in combination with string instruments, piano, or voices.<br />

332 <strong>College</strong> Choir (1 credit) Members selected by audition. Any<br />

qualified student may audition. Public performances <strong>of</strong> a wide variety <strong>of</strong><br />

choral works, including masses, and oratorios, as well as secular works.<br />

The <strong>College</strong> choir takes at least one trip per semester to a highly<br />

educational musical performance, such as a concert <strong>of</strong> the New York<br />

Philharmonic, or New York City Opera. A fee <strong>of</strong> $50 will automatically be<br />

deducted from students’ accounts. This fee will cover both transportation<br />

and ticket. (Major performing ensemble) (CPA)<br />

334 Catskill Symphony Orchestra (1 credit) Exceptional student<br />

musicians may be accepted into the symphony orchestra. Audition<br />

required. (CPA)<br />

Music<br />

All B.A. and B.S. majors must successfully pass an audition on their major<br />

instrument for status as a major. The major ensemble for instrumental<br />

majors is <strong>College</strong> Wind Ensemble/Sinfonietta; for vocal majors it is<br />

<strong>College</strong> Choir. Review <strong>of</strong> major program occurs during spring term <strong>of</strong><br />

first, sophomore, junior, and senior years<br />

Requirements for the major in Music (B.A.): 17 courses in<br />

music, as follows:<br />

12 courses in theory, aural skills and history:<br />

140, 142, 240, 242 Music Theory I-IV<br />

141, 143, 241, 243 Aural Skills I-IV<br />

264, 265, 364, 365 Music History I-IV<br />

One course in conducting, selected from:<br />

320 Conducting I: Choral<br />

322 Conducting II: Instrumental<br />

One course in music internship:<br />

295, 395, or 495 Internship in Music<br />

One course in music technology:<br />

230 Introduction to Computer Technology in Music<br />

One course in diction: (Required for vocalists)<br />

324 Foreign Language Diction for Singing<br />

One course in orchestration: (Required for instrumentalists):<br />

440 Orchestration and Arranging<br />

450 Form and Analysis: Highly Recommended for all B.A.<br />

majors<br />

490 Senior Thesis<br />

Performance requirements for the major in music:<br />

8 semesters <strong>of</strong> the following:<br />

Mupf 302-308 Private Lessons on primary instrument<br />

Mupf 330 or 332: major ensemble<br />

Participation in chamber music ensembles (strongly recommended)<br />

Attendance at weekly Departmental Convocations<br />
