arithmetic functions, quadratic residues, partitions and generating<br />

341 Complex Variables (3 credits) An introduction to the theory <strong>of</strong><br />

functions <strong>of</strong> complex variables, derivatives and integrals, Cauchy’s<br />

theorem, theory <strong>of</strong> residues, applications to mathematical physics.<br />

Prerequisites: Math 233 and 235. Offered when there is sufficient student<br />

350 Topics in Mathematics (3 credits) Selected topics involving<br />

further study in advanced areas <strong>of</strong> mathematics. Offered when there is<br />

sufficient student interest. (MLC)<br />

371 Numerical Analysis (same as Cisc 371) (3 credits) The<br />

development <strong>of</strong> numerical methods and their associated error analysis.<br />

Non-linear equations, systems <strong>of</strong> linear equations, interpolation,<br />

numerical differentiation and integration. Programming <strong>of</strong> appropriate<br />

algorithms with emphasis on accuracy and efficiency. Prerequisites: Math<br />

220, 233, and 235. Offered when there is sufficient student interest.<br />

375 Optimization Techniques (same as Cisc 375) (3 credits) A survey<br />

<strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> the methods used to obtain optimal solutions to linear<br />

problems. Emphasis on linear programming, simplex algorithm, duality<br />

transportation and assignment problems, shortest route and maximum<br />

flow problems, game theory, decision trees. Additional topics may include<br />

integer programming, dynamic programming, PERT-CPM, graph theory,<br />

queuing theory. Prerequisites: Math 220, 233, and 235. Offered alternate<br />

381 Mathematical Modeling (3 credits) Selected topics in modern<br />

mathematics and operations research that have application to the social,<br />

life and managerial sciences. Emphasis on problem solving through<br />

model building. Possible topics include Markov chains, linear<br />

programming, optimization, graph theory, combinatorics, game theory,<br />

decision theory, queuing theory, simulation. Prerequisites: Math 220,<br />

233, 235. Offered alternate years. (MLC)<br />

390 Junior Seminar (4 credits) Supervised seminar study with oral<br />

and written presentations. Seminar groups are assigned topics from areas<br />

such as geometry, algebra, analysis or applied mathematics. Prerequisites:<br />

at least a C in Math 320 and permission <strong>of</strong> the department. (Must be<br />

taken during January Term on campus.) (MLC)<br />

411 Partial Differential Equations (3 credits) Solution <strong>of</strong> second<br />

order linear equations including the heat, potential and wave equations;<br />

initial and boundary value problems; Fourier series; numerical methods.<br />

Prerequisite: Math 311. Offered when there is sufficient student interest.<br />

420 Abstract Algebra (3 credits) Mathematical induction, divisibility,<br />

Euclidean algorithm, congruences, groups, rings, integral domains, fields.<br />

Prerequisites: at least a C in Math 320. (MLC)<br />

431 Introduction to Real Analysis (3 credits) Set theory, the real<br />

number system, basic topology, metric spaces, limits, continuity,<br />
