Large bodies of water such as Lake Michigan exert a moderating influence on air temperatures, and so for much of
eastern Wisconsin’s riding season the words “cooler by the lake” are well known – and, depending on the heat index,
highly desirable – to motorcycle enthusiasts. This loop follows approximately one-third of the state’s total Lake Michigan
shoreline, while providing a uniquely refreshing alternative to the farmland and forests that characterize other popular
riding routes in the area. Although not continually hugging the shore, the ride provides ample scenic views of this great
lake.
The first of the larger towns north of Milwaukee and its suburbs is Port Washington, a harbor village with a rich history
in maritime commerce, although today it’s more associated with charter fishing and pleasure boating. Further north up
the coast is the city of Sheboygan, another harbor town that is regarded as the home of the bratwurst, a German-style
sausage that is one of the state’s culinary calling cards (second perhaps only to cheese). The Sheboygan Harbor Centre
Marina is a city focal point, offering shops and dining as well as boating opportunities. The final stop north is Manitowoc,
known as Wisconsin’s Maritime Capitol in part for its storied shipbuilding heritage. A visit to the fascinating Wisconsin
Maritime Museum in Manitowoc brings the era to life.
Before the advent of the 18-wheelers that ply today’s highways, maritime shipping was a primary component of eastern
Wisconsin commerce. A certain amount of commercial shipping still occurs on Lake Michigan, but it’s hardly the force it
once was. This ride loop provides glimpses of that bygone era; when it was always cooler by the lake.
Cool Treats
Wisconsin is known as the dairy state so it should come as no surprise that their frozen treats are in a class of there own.
For a taste of the local flavor you need to get hold of some frozen custard. Ice cream’s culinary cousin can be found
throughout the area at classic drive-in stands, old-fashioned mom-and-pop shops and successful local chains. Frozen
custard is so popular here that the unique “flavors of the day” (like Banana Cream Pie, Peanut Butter Cup, and Peach
Melba just to name a few) are available on electronic billboards and telephone hot lines!
