Auction
From Top-Sellers
to Good-Buys
The interest was huge and the collection of participants in the 128 th Elite Auction in
April was small but fancy. The riding horse auction result reflected a negative direction;
the price structure of the foals remained almost the same as last year.
By Dr. Michaela Weber-Hermann
The auction started out as one would want it to
and as smart marketing people saw it: Head
number one caused quite a stir at the beginning of
the 128 th elite auction. It was the first horse to
cause a stir but it was certainly not the only one!
Fritz found a new home with a loyal client from
Switzerland for 92,000 Euros. The five-year old
stallion by Farewell III/Londonderry (breeder: Annegreth
Winkelmann, Uplengen; exhibitor: Henrik
Klatte, H and H Klatte KG, Lastrup) will not leave
Lower Saxony though. He will stay in training with
Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn. The renowned championship-rider
and trainer has a good hand with stallions.
This has been known to be a fact since she
rode the Hanoverian stallion Benetton by Brentano
II to become the much-celebrated Bundeschampion
of three-year old stallions in 2007! Now this
pair successfully competes at international level.
One can well imagine that Fritz who has already
been successful in riding- and dressage-horse classes
will do well under Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn. The
impressive and as a premium sire declared stallion
who was licensed in Redefin is a member of the
Nordenburg family. He convinced the audience
and the buyer with his powerful and elastic movement
in trot and canter.
The second highest-priced horse was a mare with
head number 2 that had already created a stir
when she won the free-jumping competition for
four-year olds in Verden this year. Her name is
Penelope PJ; she is a daughter of the stallion Perigueux
who was awarded the Grande-Prize during
the Gala Evening the night before the auction.
Heinz-Dieter Gödecke bred this mare that convinced
with her powerful, ambitious, yet careful
jumping ability and style in Edemissen-Blumenhagen.
Dr. Jacobs GbR from Bierbergen was the exhibitor.
The mare out of the family of Sedalia had already
proven her jumping ability at the mare
performance test when she received a 10,0 for her
style as well as her ability. Canadian customers
bought this exceptional talent that descends from
a famous and successful family. Her granddam
called St.Pr. mare Weltdame was the overall champion
at the Louis-Wiegels-Show in 1984. It took
only 47,000.00 Euros to buy Penelope PJ. The collection
of jumpers this year was one of the best.
Chacco Grande by Chacco-Blue/Graf Top (breeder/
exhibitor: Torsten Siems, Marklohe-Oyle) was also
sold. The colorful chestnut stallion completed his
70-day test in Adelheidsdorf with a jumper score of
8,46. An investor from North-Rhine Westphalia
bought the athlete for 38,000.00 Euros. The fouryear
old stallion will remain in Verden’s training
and sales centre to further his athletic career with
Chacco Grande is one of the top
jumpers and will remain in Verden to
further his sporthorse career.
Visiting Verden for the first time: Minister
of Agriculture Christian Meyer
in a conversation with the managing
director of the State Stud Celle, Dr.
Axel Brockman.
the support of the Hanoverian Association Promoting
Hanoverian Horses FRH.
The price structure did not truly reflect the outstanding
quality of the horses. For instance Sunciro by
Sunlight xx/Velten Third (breeder: Wilhelm Stadtlander,
Lilienthal; exhibitor: Ann-Kathrin Stadtlander,
Niefern-Oeschelbronn) who is an licensed and
performance tested half-bred sire with a show record
is a half-brother to licensed Callaho’s Benicio
who is the Bundeschampion of six-year old dressage
horses in 2011. The blood-influenced horse is
still developing. Clients from Spain recognized his
potential and were delighted that they were able
to buy this talent for 20,000.00 Euros. Sunciro will
also remain in Verden to further his training – a
true testament of trust in the work of the AAZ from
new customers from Spain. Higher prices were
also obtained, though. 14 out 50 Hanoverian riding
horses sold within the price segment of
25,000 Euros and above. The dressage mare ‘Sie
ist schön U’ and jumper mare Valencia sold for
42,000 Euros each. The elegant and beautiful
black four-year old dressage prospect by Sir Donnerhall/Metternich
(breeder/exhibitor: Jürgen Uhlenwinkel,
Grethem) found a new home in the
dressage stables of Jörg Schrödter in Leipheim in
Bavaria. ‘Sie ist schön U’ proved her qualities in
movement and rideability by obtaining placements
in riding horse classes as well as with her performance
in the mare test where she received a 9,0
for her walk and a 9,0 as the guestrider score. She
received an 8,0 for her trot, canter and rideability.
Valencia is moving even further south. The twotime
Ia-premium recipient by Valentino/Captain
Paul (breeder/exhibitor: Heinrich Mues, Stolzenau-
Nendorf) found a new owner amidst our new customers
from Spain.
Spain tops the export leader board of the 128 th Elite
Auction with seven purchases. A total of 22
participants sold to foreign customers. Four horses
group bought these horses. They took every
Fritz:
A dressage vision!
An elite auction is always opened by one of
the collections best participants! 2013 it
was Fritz. The elegant chestnut stallion by
Farewell III out of Loraine by Londonderry
stimulated the interest of prospective buyers
as well as the entire auction team during the
two-week long training’s period. The ambitious
five-year old dressage talent always
gave his best in a calm and composed style.
Auction rider Sascha Böhmke commented on
the joint training period, “Fritz blossomed in
the dressage ring. He attentively awaited the
aids of the rider and accepted them with
sensitivity. You also could not wish for a better
partner when handling him on the
ground. He loved to cuddle.”
Fritz was born on the farm of Annegreth
Winkelmann in Uplengen in 2008. “He was
very confident and attentive as a foal. He reacted
to anything new with curiosity and
trust,” the keen horsewoman who has been
dedicated to the Hanoverian breed since
1973 tells. Currently there are eight broodmares
on her farm. Fritz’ dam Loraine has
delivered a total of three foals. Fritz has two
half-sisters – a three- and a four-year old.
Both are sired by premium stallion Fiorano
and are still owned by Annegreth Winkelmann.
“Unfortunately I sold Loraine last year
but may get the chance to buy her back. She
has produced exceptional offspring.” Annegreth
Winkelmann already bred granddam
Dunja. This daughter of Dream of Glory/Trajan
also produced St. Pr. mare Princess Piccolina
by Prince Thatch xx who was awarded a
Ia-prize at the breed show in Aurich-Tannenhausen
in 2007 where she also became class
champion. After Prince Thatch xx the breeder
selected Celle’s state stud sire, approval
champion and gigantic producer Londonderry
for her mare Dunja. Loraine was born in
2004. Wunschtraum by Wiesenbaum xx who
is victorious at S-level dressage competitions
with rider Karen Schulze-Bergmann heads
on the damline of Nordenburg at the competitive
level. The chestnut has always been
special for Annegreth Winkelmann, “I was
moved to tears when I watched Fritz trot
around the indoor arena in a relaxed fashion
on Friday night during the gala evening.”
The powerfully moving Fritz showed his potential
as a youngster. Fritz made his public
debut at only a few months of age at the
German Foal Championships in Lienen where
Henrik Klatte from Lastrup saw the promising
chestnut. He seized the opportunity and
bought the colt from Annegreth Winkelmann.
After all sire Farewell III lives in
Lastrup with Henrik Klatte. Fritz grew up in
the colt fields in Lastrup and was scheduled
to be presented at the stallion approval in
Verden as well as in Redefin. The dressage
aspirant Fritz could not be presented in Verden
due to an injury. He was licensed and
was awarded a premium at the inspection
site in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Fritz completed
the 30-day test at the stallion testing
station in Neustadt/Dosse with a dressage
score of 8,01. The athlete continued to master
additional competitions with his excelling
talent. He was presented in riding horse classes
and dressage tests at the A level seven
times and always finished in the ribbons.
Fritz finished the final at Verden’s Riding
Horse Championships last year in fifth place
with rider Hermann Burger.
Fritz is looking forward to a successful sport
horse career. Even though his new owner is
from Switzerland the five-year old Fritz will
remain in Lower Saxony with Anna-Sophie
Fiebelkorn.
Auction
purchase as an opportunity to celebrate. Three horses
each sold to the U.S. A. and Switzerland; one
horse each to Chile, Denmark, Italy, Canada, the
Netherlands and Hungry. The average price for the
fifty riding-horses was 22,900.00 Euros – an auction
result that is not totally satisfactory as 65 auction
participants sold for an average price of
29,000.00 Euros at the Elite Auction in April of
2012.
The number of participants was rather low due to
an unusually high dropout rate. An additional twelve
horses were listed in the catalog. “The number
of participants was too low without a doubt for a
Hanoverian elite auction. There are many different
reasons why twelve horses dropped out. The radiographs
were definitely all okay otherwise the horses
would not have been accepted in the first
place,” auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener
explained. Wegener also did not try to whitewash
the lower prices, “Please bear in mind: A year ago
exhibitors had no reservations to send the very
best to Verden. Allow me to remind you of Lemony’s
Nicket. Breeders take the safe route today because
of the current market situation. They sell their products
as quickly as possible without striving for top
prices. All our breeders must recall that successful
auctions are advertisement for the Hanoverian
horse and with that for all of us.” According to
Wegener the elite auction this April was of great
interest to our buyers, though.
Foals that were captivating
The foal collection not only had about the same
number of participants as in 2012 (43 versus 44
last year), it also obtained nearly the same average
price. This is not a given fact as especially the foal
market is tough that early on in the year. “The time
of foaling has changed. Foals are born much later
than even a few years ago,” breeding manager
and managing direction Dr. Werner Schade explained.
“We have to select foals at a very early ageand
it is not easy.” The selection was clearly successful.
One reason may have been the late
inspection date that had been set because of the
market situation and the late foaling dates. 42
youngsters sold for an average price of 6,750.00
Euros while last year 44 foals sold for an average
price of 6,800.00 Euros. Customers from Spain and
Finland also took a great interest in the foal collection.
Each bought five Hanoverian weanlings; three
foals sold to the USA, two each to Belgium and
Great Britain and one each to Australia, Italy and
Portugal. The auctioneers Daniel Delius and Bernd
Hickert obtained 10,000.00 Euros or more for six
foals.
Sansibar who is a colt by Surprice (a son of Sir Donnerhall)
and out of a dam by Brentano II/Wolkentanz
(breeder/exhibitor: Gerhard Dieckhaus, Visbek)
was the top-selling foal. The new owner of the bay
is a breeder from Kirchlinteln who raises colts. He
owns Rassolini, too. The Hessian sire won the Nürnberger
Burgpokal in 2010 under Verden’s former
auction rider Kathrin Meyer zu Strohen. In regard to
auction riders: They did a great job acting calmly
and skillfully even though they had been criticized
heavily and sometimes in an uncalled-for fashion in
the discussions about the structures of the association
during the last weeks prior to the auction. “It
is bad that young people who do an excellent job
with a lot of passion are exposed to such attacks,”
Dr. Werner Schade commented. “It is time now to
focus on the significant.” The auctions. •
Grande-Prize
Perigueux – A fighter spirit with a story-book career
Grande-Prize holder Perigueux.
Perigueux was born on the farm of breeder Dr.
Karl-Otto Jacobs in Bierbergen in 2002 as the first
foal of St. Pr. mare Sensation by Stakkato/Akzent II
(breeder: Hartmut Hopmann, Wittingen). He was
raised in Hunnesrück on the farm for raising Hanoverian
stallion prospects. The chestnut went to the
stallion testing station in Adelheidsdorf as a twoand-a-half-year
old. His special talent for jumping
was evident even then. He finished the part index
jumping with 131,93 points, 2 nd place. This result
combined with his jumping style roused athletic
desires. His licensing in Verden in February 2006
prescribed a career as a breeding stallion at the
State Stud Celle. Perigueux enjoyed a great popularity
with the breeders from the beginning on,
which still continues for obvious reasons.
Hauptsattelmeister Joachim Winter from the State
Stud Celle was responsible for training the wiry
chestnut. Perigueux and he collected numerous
ribbons in foundation classes up to a fifth place in
Hanover’s Jumper Horse Championships in 2007
in Verden. Joachim Winter trained Perigueux up to
M-level. Looking back he says the following about
the stallion, “He was brave and careful even as a
young horse. He has always tried to avoid any contact
with poles.” He has kept these attributes until
today. Perigueux took the next step on his career
ladder after changing his rider. He changed barns
in the fall of 2009. He celebrated his first successes
at S-level with rider Eva Bitter in February 2010.
She had already celebrated phenomenal successes
with Perigueux’s dam-sire Stakkato. It truly was a
super-smooth transition! The victory in the Final of
the Youngster Cup 2010 in Munich was the preliminary
highlight. A bronze medal at the German
Championships for female jumper riders followed
in Balve the following year and placements in international
S****-level classes in Dortmund,
Münster and Paderborn followed 2012. Eva Bitter
is foremost impressed with Perigueux’s performance
willingness, “Perigueux lives for of his attitude.
He tries to do the right thing every day. A
super pleasant horse! Honest and well-behaved
but alert when it counts.”
Perigueux turned ten years of age in 2012; his oldest
descendants are now five-years old. They already
show their jumping talent. To name just a
few: There is the finalist in the Bundeschampionate
and the latter auction participant in Verden called
Perigueuxs As and Penta who is also a former auction
horse that was a finalist at the World Championships
for young jumper horses in Lanaken under
rider Ricardo Jurado from Spain.
2013 started out with a bang! Penelope PJ won
the free-jumping competition for four-year olds in
Verden and sold on Verden’s 128 th elite auction as
a member of the jumper collection. Perigueux’s descendants
attract positive attention especially on
auctions and that with good reason: “All the descendants
we haveoffered through Verden’s auction
program have displayed careful and powerful
jumping ability. They use their bodies well while
jumping,” so auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm
Wegener. “They are real jumpers.”
The results of the breed value estimation corroborate
this statement. An integrated FN-breed value
jumping of 167 that is based on his own performance
and the performance of his offspring catapults
Perigueux into third position in Germany. He
was awarded the Grande-Prize in hope that this
excellent sire may lastingly stamp the Hanoverian
breed. Perigueux warrants these hopes. •
Almost 350 delegates, members and listeners
made it to the forum of the Niedersachsenhalle
in Verden. The meeting was covered live and
could be watched in the foyer. It became apparent
that this meeting of the delegates was going to
take a different course when President Manfred
Schäfer gave his welcome-speech. The President of
the Breeding Club Freudenberg called Hilmer
Buschmann and a few other delegates stood up
and put a motion for confidential elections for all
voting and a separate relief of the board and the
Managing Director. Manfred Schäfer agreed to
confidential elections and furthermore explained,
“Unfortunately we cannot adhere to the motion
for a separate relief. Dr. Werner Schade and his representatives
Gerhard Wiechers and Ulrich Hahne
work in accordance with our direction. We present
our results jointly. If you are unhappy with the
work, don‘t relieve all of us. The by-laws do not call
for a separate relief.”
Solidarity for
Hanover
The focus of the second meeting of the delegates lay
on the professional world, the media and on various
internet forums. Board elections and a motion from a
breeder who demanded changes to the structure of
the association called for attention. Result: The
board was reelected and the motion lacked
substance.
By Julia Martin
The President shared a few sentiments in no uncertain
terms before he continued with the agenda,
“A lot has changed over the past four years. The
Business Packet II of the german government was
launched and we had to decide on modernizing
the Niedersachsenhalle in a very short period of
time. The remodeling has taken place over the
passed three years while the auction business has
continued. In my opinion the renovations were
successfully completed. Many visitors confirm my
impressions. It goes without saying that one cannot
meet everyone’s taste.” Additional costs were
anticipated. As the renovations were partially financed
by public funds the association had to
comply with public offers and could not negotiate
fixed prices. This fact cannot be held against the
association. Furthermore the board kept the delegates
informed about additional costs at all times.
“Lastly I am proud of these phenomenal changes.”
Manfred Schäfer continued clearing up rumors
about Dr. Günther Friemel and Dr. Gerd Brunken –
“If things had occurred without reason legal actions
would have certainly been taken,” he corrected
misstatements and furthermore “The President
does not earn 80,000.00 Euros per year; he receives
compensation for expenditures in the amount
of 1,500 Euros per month.”
The development in Germany and Europe
Breeding manager and managing director Dr. Werner
Schade opened his report to the delegates
with the current situation of breeding horses in
Germany and Europe: The breedings – especially in
Germany, the Netherlands, France and Denmark –
are retrograde and have been so over the last five
years. We have recorded a decline in breedings of
40 percent in Hanover since 2008. A structural
change has been noticeable since 2004 and has
been accelerated through the economic crisis. The
equestrian sport is clearly more stable than horse
breeding. While the equestrian sport more or less
has stagnated in Europe it reflects growth in Asia
and overseas. This may lead to a shortage of horses
in the coming years. The Hanoverian Association
has adjusted to these new challenges quickly,
has created appropriate conditions and has positioned
itself nationally and internationally. Dr. Wer-
8 The Hanoverian 05|2013

Hannoveraner Verband
ner Schade elaborated, “In future the associations
will depend on cooperation even more so. We will
not only follow this road but help to shape it. The
German riding horse will certainly not be at the
end of this road. We can however obtain synergy
effects.” The various associations already work together
on several issues like common health standards,
a health data bank, genomic selection and
the improvement of purchase exams. The current
development in the breeding of horses must also
take the financial aspects into account or in other
words budget restrictions are unavoidable. “It is
important to lead the association through this
phase in an economically safe fashion,” Dr. Werner
Schade explained. All costs of the association are
constantly and regularly checked and questioned.
“Saving money goes without saying in a business
during times of financial stress. It is however
wrong to create a financial catastrophe because of
it.” Furthermore improving the marketing situation
for the breeder is a central concern of the association.
The Dutch association handles this issue very
differently. The KWPN handles the marketing for
horse traders and does not interfere with sales at
all while the Hanoverian Association considers it
its responsibility to market horses for breeders at a
relatively young age. This concept only works for
foreign countries in combination with additional
training of horse and customer. “We have followed
this path for some time now with increasing intensity,”
so the breeding manager. “We are more and
more active in more and more countries. Currently
we offer clinics and training sessions in six different
countries.” China is one focal point; a country
with potential for great opportunities. The Hanoverian
Association is currently the only German breed
association active on this relatively new Chinese
market. Other measures for improving sales have
He added, “We are not in the anonymity of
Bismarck’s times it was known that unrestrained
candor can easily lead to inconsiderateness.” With
these words the managing director referred to circulating
was to be used to punish and/or reprimand individual
declining due to reduced memberships numbers as
well as lower numbers of mares and breedings. The
income from sales is subject to unpredictable deviations.
Factors like a lower foreign demand or an
increase of the value-added tax to 19 percent slowed
down sales and caused a deficit of 135,426.14
Euros. “It is a negative but bearable result.” The
A strong union – FRH
Hanoverian horses still create the best headlines
– mostly those with the appendix FRH. Numerous
athletes supported by the Hanoverian Support Organization
FRH have stood in the limelight in international
competitions. Desperados FRH and Dablino
FRH represented Germany’s colors in the
dressage arena at the Olympic Games in London.
Butts Abraxxas FRH was a member of the German
gold team in eventing. Fantasia FRH also travelled
to London as the reserve horse. Isabell Werth’s Don
Johnson became a member of the FRH-family at
the International Dressage and Jumper Festival in
Verden. Benetton Dream FRH is another rising star
with rider Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn. Satisfaction
who is a former sire from the State Stud Celle belongs
to the FRH-jumpers. 15-year old Emil Hallundbaek
from Denmark has been riding this stallion
since September. Another very successful
change of rider took place for Gotha FRH. The
twelve-year old mare jumped into the world’s top
group of jumpers with rider Ludger Beerbaum.
Henrik von Eckermann has been riding Gotha FRH
since December 2012. By tradition event horses
hold a strong position in the Hanoverian Support
Organization. Olympic champion Sandra Auffahrt
won the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf with
Corona in the beginning of September. FRH Escada
JS celebrated her first starts in international
3*-competitions with rider Ingrid Klimke. Burlington
who is the winner of the Nürnberger Burgpokal
is the latest FRH-addition. Charlott-Maria
Schürmann presented Burlington FRH at the gala
evening on Friday.
Clear majorities
The voting process took several hours as every vote
had to be done by confidential ballot. Even though
neither Manfred Schäfer nor the other board members
were accepted unanimously they all were reelected
by a clear majority of more than 100 votes
each. At the end breeder Kareen Heineking-Schütte
proposed a motion not to decide on the position of
breeding manager and managing director by personnel
union in the future. However the by-laws of
the Hanoverian Association state that the board
has to decide on this position. According to the statutes
the meeting of the delegates is not even authorized.
“We do not share the view that a separation
needs to be implemented here. We believe that
Dr. Werner Schade does an excellent job,” Manfred
Schäfer explained. Kareen Heineking-Schütte withdrew
two other motions. She found out that her
first motion could not be realized and her second
motion had already been in effect for years. •
Interview with Manfred Schäfer regarding the meeting of the delegates
THE HANOVERIAN: Mr. Schäfer, you have
just come out of a six-hour long meeting
with the delegates. Are you relieved?
Manfred Schäfer, “Yes, I am relieved but also exhausted.
I am pleased that the meeting of the delegates
ended in a good atmosphere and with
clear results in spite of the tension.”
THE HANOVERIAN: Your re-election with 27
votes against you can not feel like a dream
result. What did you expect?
Manfred Schäfer, “I do not worry about how many
votes I may get prior to the election. From my point
of view the result was excellent but not a dream
result.”
THE HANOVERIAN: Before delegates meeting
there were many discussions and rumors
– if you wanted to get to the bottom
of things; what actually happened?
Manfred Schäfer, “there are always a few unhappy
ones in difficult times. Many rumors started circulating
from various sides. They lacked any foundation.
I cannot avoid getting the impression that our
general manager Dr. Schade was targeted and was
to be wronged.”
THE HANOVERIAN: You did not deal with the
motion to separate the responsibilities of
the managing director from the responsibilities
of the breeding manager or the dissolution
of the personnel union because of
the by-laws. Do you believe that the critics
will remain content?
Manfred Schäfer, “No, but according to the bylaws
of the Hanoverian Association the board is
responsible for the inner organization. This can obviously
be discussed but cannot be decided upon
in the meeting of the delegates.”
THE HANOVERIAN: Explain briefly why you
do not agree to separate these two fields of
responsibilities.
Manfred Schäfer, “I do not think it is sensible to
employ two people as both areas are hard to separate.
It would result in competence problems. Furthermore
our finances are in the best of hands
with Gerhard Wiechers who is much appreciated
by all.
THE HANOVERIAN: During the meeting a
motion was proposed to vote on separatly
releasing the board and the managing director.
Do you know why the petitioner
wanted to vote separately and confidentially?
Manfred Schäfer, “No, I do not know for sure. The
executive board directs the responsibilities of the
managing director and the breeding manager and
controls these, too. The entire board controls the
executive board. How can the meeting decide
whether the directions or the executions were
poor?”
THE HANOVERIAN: One could not but notice
your strong emotions in certain moments
during the meeting. For instance when you
reported that your son did not want to accept
a breeding award for you because he
feels that people begrudge you of the
award. Is the price you pay to be the President
of the Hanoverian Association sometimes
not very high?
Manfred Schäfer, “Yes, it is. I still enjoy carrying out
my duties and look forward to the constant challenge
to be confronted with a variety of responsibilities.
It is important to me to meet and get to
know many people whose mutual interest lies in
the horse in a good atmosphere. This compensates
for much.”
Rolf Hillman conducted the interview.
Manfred Schäfer, “I greatly enjoy my
position and am looking forward to
the constant challenge!”
Salinero danced
for the last time
He danced for the last time: Salinero was retired in
‘s-Hertogenbosch. The impressive black was one of
the world’s best dressage horses with rider Anky van
Grunsven.
By Britta Züngel
lue floodlights shine in Brabant’s sold-out arena.
A spotlight highlights a grand piano and
B
pianist Wibi Soerjadi. Torches accompany Salinero
into the arena. After the last notes from “Dance of
Devotion” fade away, one of the best leaves the
dressage arena forever. Salinero became Olympic
Champion in freestyle in Hong Kong in 2008. The
cheering starts. The audience gets up from the
seats. A standing ovation for a fantastic pair! Well
deserved for magnificent performances and exciting
competition with which this pair impressed
throughout the past decade. His rider Anky van
Grunsven thanks her fans with tears in her eyes and
a trembling voice. Her radiant smile returns as the
delighted audience says good-bye waving
thousands of handkerchiefs. Salinero dances down
centreline for the last time before the pair disappear
into the darkness.
Salinero and Anky van Grunsven had a great impact
on the sport of dressage from 2002 until
2012. The Salieri/Lungau son was born at the farm
of Horst Bünger in Essel. The breeder acquired
Salinero’s granddam Pikora (breeder: Jürgen Siltmann,
Badbergen) in foal. Salinero’s dam St.Pr.
mare Luna was born on his farm. Salinero’s career
path started out in the jumper ring. He won jumper
horse classes before he made his way into the
dressage arena. Salinero met up with his one-year
older brother called Seven Up at the Olympic
Games in Athens in 2004. While Salinero proved
his talent in the dressage ring Seven Up competed
in the jumper division under Jung-Ho Woo from
Korea. Dam St.Pr. mare Luna became ‘Hanoverian
Mare of the Year 2008’. The stately and 176 cm tall
Salinero impressed with his dressage performances
as a young dressage horse. He finished the
Bundeschampionate for five-year old dressage
horses in fifteenth place under rider Holger Schulze
before he was placed in training with the renowned
trainer Holga Finken. His first M-victories followed.
Sjef Janssen discovered the black gelding at
Finken’s barn in Kirchwalsede in 2000. He realized
the incredible potential of the six-year old and
bought him for customers from the USA. The deal
fell through. It took some convincing before Anky
van Grunsven mounted Salinero. “Even though he
had been in our barn for some time he just was not
really my horse. I knew he was a very special horse
after having ridden the first movements though!
Sjef always succeeded in motivating me. He
brought the best out of Salinero and me,” Anky
van Grunsven remembers.
Unforgettable free-styles
Fighter spirit distinguished Salinero. Even though
he was considered to be strong and hot-tempered
Anky van Grunsven dealt with his disposition
beautifully. His sensibility and nervousness were
noticeable in all his performances and the training
methods controversial. His freestyle performances
were composed just for the bundle of energy and
became legendary. The music ‘L’Esprit Chanson’
will remain unforgettable. One could even hear
Anky van Grunsven’s voice singing. The pair became
freestyle champions to this piece of music in
Aachen in 2006 . For more than a decade Salinero
and Anky van Grunsven were reliable stars on the
Dutch team. The list of successes is long and started
with the Olympic victory in Athens in 2004
which the pair repeated four years later in Hong
Kong. Salinero contributed to making Anky van
Grunsven the first and only rider who succeeded in
becoming Olympic champion three times successively
– and that on two different horses.
Salinero and Anky van Grunsven became European
Champions in Hagen and placed second with the
Dutch team in 2005. After winning the Freestyle-
World Championship title in Aachen in 2006 and a
second place with the Dutch team Salinero repeated
his title victory at the European Championships
in La Mandria in 2007. He helped the young Dutch
team win gold in Italy, just like in Windsor in 2009
when the proven black won bronze in the freestyle
that was his last individual medal. Salinero and
Anky van Grunsven were the World Cup-Champions
in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008. Salinero was
unable to participate in the World Equestrian
Games in Kentucky in 2010 due to an injury. Many
then spoke about the end of his career. He surprised
everyone with a comeback in 2012. At the
end of a unique career he won a bronze medal
with his team at the Olympic Games in London.
Salinero will spend his well-deserved retirement in
the fields of Grunsven’s equestrian facility in Erp. •
Breeding
Proven in
Competition
He is successful in the jumper saddle
and in breeding Hanoverians; he knows
exactly what he wants: Frank Johannsen
from Daensen.
You will not find Frank Johannsen in the barn
during the day. That‘s when the 45-year old is
on the golf course. He is not practicing his drives on
the fairway however. Instead his expertise is in demand.
He is a specialist for golf course maintenance,
renovation and regeneration of the noble
green. Ten employees and highly sophisticated machinery
help him in the family business his father
started in 1985. Walter Johannsen gave up his trucking
company almost 30 years ago when the golf
course was built just a stone-throw away in Buxtehude.
He invested in a new company. His son Frank
is a trained ‘green’ keeper and has managed the
business since 1999 and has expanded the business
to include footing management for riding
rings and maintenance of athletic fields. Playing
golf is still a hobby, “After all one should know
what it is all about!” says Frank Johannsen. He
knows that all too well when talking about the
breeding of jumpers. His ideas are clear and his
goalis, too, “I want to breed an internationally interesting
sport horse with a good attitude!”
Frank Johannsen was eight years old when his father
bought him his first pony that he set out with
together with his three-year older sister and Walter
Johannsen. Walter Johannsen always supported his
children and had ridden jumpers at a young age.
Later on a Thoroughbred mare came to the barn.
Frank competed it at the E- and A-level. It became
really interesting for the talented boy when his cousin
Cord Matthies gave him 14-year old Britta by
Bleep xx/Steinbock (breeder: Heinrich Clüver, Völkersen).
“At the time my dad thought that the mare
was too old. So I paid for her with money I had received
at my confirmation,” Frank Johannsen smiles.
The pair were a perfect match. Britta competed
Maren, Jan-Luca, Frank, Thies, Walter and Renate
Johannsen (from right to left) with a three-year old
filly by Acorado/Stakkato. Photo: Züngel
at the S-level at the age of 18. The family looked for
a good-quality prospect in 1987. Nobody foresaw
that Fürstin by Ferdinand/Don Carlos (breeder:
Leon Melchior, Zangersheide) would turn into a jewel.
“I called her ‘Flotte Deern’. She had just been
broken to saddle but you could already see her ability
in the free-jumping chute. She had great papers,
too! We thought that she would be good for
breeding, too.” The fact that she had already had a
foal was another plus. This foal was no one less
than Esprit FRH by Eiger who became Olympic
team champion with rider Lars Nieberg.
A severe riding accident delayed the career start.
Frank Johannsen had a rotational fall with a young
horse during a training session, broke his femur
and was laid up for a long time. Britta was unsuccessfully
covered by Wendekreis. Flotte Deern had a
year off. The minute Frank Johannsen was back in
the saddle he placed in an M/B-level jumper class
with Flotte Deern. The pair collected more than 20
S-level placements – all in northern Germany. “I
could have sold Flotte Deern many times but wanted
to keep her for my own breeding program.” He
retired the mare from competition after a victory on
the Dobrock in 1994. At that time the legendary For
Pleasure stood at stud in our neighborhood at
Heinrich Platte’s farm in Hollenstedt. “Even as a
young horse For Pleasure had a wonderful attitude
and never made a mistake.” The result of this most
successful combination was For Fantasie. She competed
internationally with Luciana Diniz. Two fullbrothers
by Esprit called Emilio and Esteban follo-
18 The Hanoverian 05|2013

Breeding
wed in 1998 and 1999 and presented Frank
Johannsen with one of his first greatest breeding
successes. The two brothers were the vintage
champions at the Free-Jumping Competition of the
Program for Hanoverian Jumper Horse Breeding in
Verden in 2002. Emilio was licensed and went to
the barn of Lars Nieberg. Frank Johannsen competed
Esteban at the M-level.
Flotte Deern was artificially inseminated by
Hanover’s foundation sire Stakkato the following
year. “Because of the reflexes!” St. Pr. mare
Stakkato’s Deern placed third in the free-jumping
in 2004, won jumper horse classes at the L-level
with his breeder and is the declared favorite in the
barn of Johannsen. “We planned to go straight
back into competition after one foal,” says Frank
Johannsen. But then her first son was so interesting
as a yearling that we continued breeding her.” Her
first son was privately owned sire Canstakko. Frank
Johannsen looked for performance when selecting
the sire, “I saw the stallion Canturo at the Derby in
Hamburg.” The decision was made after the bay
had finished the Grand Prix without a fault. Canstakko
received a premium award at his licensing.
Frank Johannsen refused numerous offers but sold
a share to the Station Hell. The stallion was a hit
from the get go at the Hell Station and at the insemination
station in Bargstedt. Two sons from his
first vintage called Concours Complet and Cansendo
were licensed. His success story continued in
2012: premium sire Cantolar was licensing champion
in Denmark. Two descendants won their divisions
at the free-jumping competition in Verden.
A lucky hand
In addition to Flotte Deern St. Pr. mare Madonna by
Madison/Derwisch (breeder: Heinrich Cohrs, Wenzendorf)
also stood in the breeder’s barn. “She was
beautiful so we bred her,” Frank Johannsen narrates.
Two For Pleasure-foals were born: The stallion
Futurist was sold to Canada. St. Pr. mare For Loveley
remained on the farm. Frank Johannsen once
again proved to have a lucky hand at the auction in
Kutenholz, when he brought a grey mare home
called Glücksfee by Glücksgriff/ Arkansas (breeder:
Hermann Feldmann, Bramstedt) with a foal at her
side by Calido. “She represented the modern sporthorse
type and jumped with a strong push-off. She
always gave it her best,” Frank Johannsen remembers.
She won jumper horse classes at the M-level
during her first show season. The mare broke her
ankle that winter. Frank Johannsen believed in the
mare. So he had surgery performed and then bred
her to the Holstein sire Acorado. The result was the
licensed sire Adorado who sold on the stallion market
to Belgium. Donaat Brondeel rode the grey into
third place in the World Championships for young
jumper horses in Lanaken four years later. He competes
in Nation Prizes now. “That is a real highlight!”
“Our boarders trust our judgment as we ride successfully;
this is important. It helps to be successful,”
Frank Johannsen is glad. His equestrian facility
started out with two box stalls that were attached
to his parents’ home. The family bought an empty
farm in very close proximity in 1994. In less than
two years an indoor arena, outdoor rings and a
home were added. The number of boxes raised
from 28 to 68. Around 30 boarders moved in. “It
must work financially!” The sign “Frank’s nursery”
leads to a run-in stall where the hopeful youngsters
grow up. It was built in 2006.
Frank Johannsen is someone who does not leave
anything to chance. He has a plan, “I have the
great advantage of having ridden all my mares. I
know about their strengths and weaknesses. I try
to compensate for the latter by using an appropriate
stallion. I prefer a compact horse with a strong
back. The jumper courses have become more technical
and call for rideability and power.” It is also
important to keep up with the times; the breeding
program must be interesting; that will make it desirable.
His five broodmares are in the Hanoverian
Jumper Horse Breeding Program; three of them are
St. Pr. mares. Frank Johannsen’s agenda is full.
“You go out and show the horses and they will
learn something at the same time.” It is important
to him. He also finds time to be the President of the
Horse Breeding Club Hollenstedt and to serve on
the board of the Riding Club Estetal, “I am interested
in motivating breeders. They must become more
active and seek the connection to the sport. I would
be glad, if we had more younger breeders and if
they would cooperate more closely with riders. The
equestrian sport would become more affordable
for both.”
The entire family supports Frank Johannsen. Walter
Johannsen (78) fed the horses every day up until a
year ago. Now he predominantly cares for the
youngsters. Mother Renate prefers playing golf
however she gladly accompanies the rest of the family.
Wife Maren descends from a breeder’s family
and has ridden competitions. Twelve-year old son
Thies has his own show ponies. “He knows all the
pedigrees and rides successfully,” his father says
with pride. The two-year younger brother Jan-Luca
prefers the round leather! Horses are to remain a
hobby. The secret of the success: “The whole family
participates! The most beautiful thing in the world
for me is to be able to ride both my jumpers at
night in total peace.” •
Training
Fotos: Jacobs, Kanz.
Go for Gold
A trademark travels around the world: The
cooperation of the Hanoverian Association with the
Heilan International Equestrian Club in China is
successful. The participation in the China Games is
the goal!
By Malte Kanz
cooperation between the Heilan International
A Equestrian Club and the Hanoverian Association
has existed since 2011. The extent and the
emphasis of the cooperation lie in the training of
riders and horses, the facilitation of the classical
way of riding and training. The world power China
sees a need for development on the equestrian
sector and has developed ideas how to do that.
They asked the Hanoverian Association for conceptual
and practical support. 400 riding horses are
already stabled at the H.I.E.C. – the majority carries
the Hanoverian hip brand. China places its
trust in the Hanoverian know-how and on Hanoverian
horses to be fit and prepared for the equestrian
world in future.
No crash-course - instead with conviction
A clear goal has been set: the successful participation
in the China-Games. The Heilan sport’s team
strives to play a significant role in the medal distribution
in the discipline of eventing. Training’s leader
Jörg Jacobs heads on the project that is designed
to be long term. “Rider and officials are not
interested in short-term triumphs. A long-lasting
success takes centre stage that will reward honest
and competent riding skills,” so Jörg Jacobs. The
training and project manager spent time in the
country to prepare horses and riders for horse
shows last year. He looked after 16 riders from the
athletic group of the Heilan International Equestrian
Club that are to be trained for eventing. The
daily training is planned as a preparation for the
China-Games that will take place the end of August/beginning
of September. Training schedules
were developed to get the young team fit for international
competition. The team won the bronze
medal in eventing at the Chinese Championships
in 2012. Training concepts were jointly developed.
The preparations are aimed at the China-Games.
A part of a whole
Five Chinese riders from the athletic group (Jiangsu-Team)
of the Heilan International Equestrian
Club traveled to Verden to learn how to train
young horses in order to install this training concept
at the home barn upon their return. These five
young riders traveled 7,500 kilometers without
knowing what to expect. The goal was to expand
their knowledge about training and riding so that
this information can be used for new tasks later.
They shared an apartment on the terrain of the
training centre in Verden. They lived close to the
horses and worked hand-in-hand with the riders
and grooms of the Hanoverian Association. “Working
side-by-side in the barn allowed for a good
information exchange about the daily routines.
Learning by doing was the motto!” Auction manager
Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener knows to appreciate
the intercultural cooperation in the stable. The
Heilan-Club purchased a total of nine youngsters
on the summer auction in 2012. These horses were
used in the daily training. Once these horses have
matured and gathered experience they will make
the trip to China to help the team win gold.
One look in the riding arenas of the training centre
was sufficient to realize that event training took a
large portion of the training’s time. The riding arena
had changed into a diversified cross-country
course with natural jumps and water ditches. An
English-speaking interpreter accompanied the training
Excursions were planned in addition to daily training
sessions under saddle and in the stable all
around the horse. The visit to Ingrid Klimke was
informative, impressive and helpful. She invited the
group to go to Muenster for a public training pre-
sentation. The Chinese riders were fascinated by
the practical demonstrations of classical training
and made use of the opportunity to personally
meet the master in eventing. The team visited the
training centre of Family von Samson in Lower Saxony
on another occasion. Here the Chinese delegation
witnessed training examples in different
age groups. They also used the opportunity to test
their young Hanoverians and their championship
horses on an indoor eventing course. Jie, Lu, Hui,
Lin and Ying-Feng received impulses, ideas and
practical demonstrations on jumping at a continuing
education evening with the Dutch jumper rider
Piet Raijmakers.
In addition to training sessions under saddle and
in hand, the opportunities offered by Verden’s
training’s centre to explain feeding, maintenance,
hoof care and veterinarian procedures were used.
The organization of horse shows was brought
closer by visiting horse shows. The Chinese guests
were allowed to look back-stage for instance in
the secretary’s office during the VER-Dinale in the
Niedersachsenhalle in January.
During the year of the water snake
The five ambitious riders returned home with lots
of impressions, pictures and desires at the end of
March. 2013 is the year of the water snake in China.
This means that only those will have a good
chance for success who follow the path of a well
thought-out plan with determination and without
getting sidetracked while properly using the influences
of the year.
The first qualification for the China Games will
take place in May. The second qualification follows
in June. Jörg Jacobs is confident. He describes the
motivation of his students as fearless. •
Ying Feng Bao, 26:
“I am grateful that I was allowed to come to Verden.
Verden’s riders are my examples. They showed
me professional riding. I also got great impressions
of the European way of life.”
Lin Qin, 29:
“I learned a lot! My riding knowledge has multiplied
and I learned the beginnings of classical
training of young horses!”
Hui Wang, 26:
“This was my first visit to Germany. I love my job!
Verden is a beautiful town with lovely people and
good Chinese restaurants. I gathered good experiences
in horse management!”
Lu Fan, 27:
“Germany is the best nation for the sport of riding.
Hanoverian sport horses are all over the
world. It is an honor for me to be able to complete
my training in Verden. Verden is the centre for
training horses! I am very thankful for the wonderful
support.”
Jie Ruan, 28:
“I am very glad to have had this training opportunity.
I received a lot of support in riding and in
daily life. I would have loved to visit more event
shows but Germany’s winter did not allow for
that. They will take place in the summer. Then we
shall visit many outdoor events.”
Dressage in Italy
Customer advisor Jeanine Pagel visited clients
and held a small dressage clinic in northern
Italy mid March where spring maked an
early entry. Francesca Pasini who is a loyal
auction customer was the initiator. In addition
to her profession as a dentist she is very
passionate about horses. She bought a charming
black mare by Desperados/Metternich
on the winter auction in 2012 that successfully
competes in dressage in Italy. Contrary
to the sport of jumping dressage is viewed as
a “side business” in Italy. Accordingly only a
few, very ambitious and interested participants
took the opportunity to ride in the clinic.
Next on the agenda was an important visit to
a wonderful client called Adriana Foti who is
building a luxurious riding-facility near Milan.
Adriana Foti has bought a total of 16 Hanoverians
including expensive foals and broodmares
as well as several Elite Auction horses
over the past years. She presented every horse
with great pride and asked for help in planning
her breeding program. Customer
Arctic training
He who believes that people in Finland hibernate
because of arctic temperatures is broadly
mistaken. The Hanoverian Club Finland offers
its members, breeders, buyers and other
interested equestrians the opportunity to
work with Steffen Werner from the Hanoverian
Association multiple times per year. The
riders try to reach and confirm their training
goals during these training weekends.
Twenty riders took the opportunity to travel
to the facility of Sanna Raitikainnen in March.
It is about 50 kilometers north of Helsinki.12
horses were brought to be prepared for freejumping,
too. Equine enthusiasts did not mind
traveling 150 kilometers to participate in this
event; it was organized in an indoor arena
with guest box stalls and a hotel nearby.

Jeanine Pagel
The quality of the participating horses was
good overall; some were trained to M-level in
dressage, others were competing in young
horse jumper classes. Pia Karhu who is the
President of the Club Finland and Sanna Raitikainnen
have organized this event for the
seventh time now. The number of participants
did not suffer because of temperatures
of minus 23 degrees Celsius; that speaks for
itself.
The clinic centreed around an intense
training’s program in dressage and jumping
with a supplementary training’s plan to prepare
for the outdoor show season. The advice
on a regular basis is much appreciated. Several
groups are planning a visit to one of
Verden’s auctions. Steffen Werner
