Analogue Video Signals
1 st signal line
FBAS or composite signal
Abbreviation for: colour,
picture, blanking and sync
signal, also called composite
or video signal.
This standard signal comprises all
brightness and colour
signals which are required for the
image formation.
Y/C or S-video signal
Abbreviation for:
Y (luminance/brightness)
C (chrominance/colour) signal.
The brightness and the colour signal
is transmitted on two separately
conducted lines.
YUV or component signal
Abbreviation for:
Y = luminance/brightness
U = Cb or Pb (colour
difference signal B-Y)
V = Cr or Pr (colour difference signal
R-Y)
On the basis of these three signals, a
red, green, blue and sync signal can
be calculated in the receiver device.
RGB signal
The three actual colour signals (red,
green, blue) are transmitted completely
separated from each other and
do not influence each other.
However, a blanking signal
has to be made available (4th/5th
signal line) for the synchronization of
the
pictures.

Advantage
One single cable is enough for the
transmission of all signals.
The maximum video and colour
bandwidth can be used. Only two
lines are required. The sync signals
continue to be in the Y-fraction.
Three lines are necessary for the
signal transmission. As DVDs have
the YUV signal on the DVD, this
transmission spread very quickly as
no conversion is required. HDTV
uses this signal as well.
As the frequency range is not lopped
off and as the signals do not influence
each other, the RGB signal is
the best connection for video connections.
