911 Communications Centre
he 911 Communications
Centre dispatches calls for
the Halifax Regional
Police and Halifax
Regional Fire and
Emergency Services. It
also provides important
field support, manages
non-emergency phone
lines which individuals
call when they require
police or fire assistance in
a less urgent setting, and
forwards calls which
require medical attention
to Emergency Health
Services ( EHS) which
handle the dispatching
duties for all ambulances
in Nova Scotia. As one of
seven Public Service
Answering Points
(PSAP's) in Nova Scotia
which are all linked to one
another, the staff of the
Centre can efficiently and
correctly handle
emergency calls that can
come from anywhere in
the Province.
Accomplishments
Dispatch Centre
A fully functional,
independent dispatch
centre is available for
handling emergency
dispatching of all police
and fire services that are
currently handled at the
Centre.
Dispatch Point
Implementation of a
single dispatch point for
all HRM fire departments,
paid and volunteer, has
been initiated, with the
Dispatch Centre assuming
dispatching
responsibilities for an
additional eight volunteer
fire departments.
Partnership with
Halifax Regional Police -
Computer
As a partner with
Halifax Regional Police, a
new computer system for
patrol vehicles was
implemented for officers
on patrol.
Current Initiatives
Paging System
Review and analysis of
a single paging system for
Halifax Regional Fire and
Emergency Services
(volunteers).
Partnership with Halifax
Regional Police - Mobile
Radio
As a partner with
Halifax Regional Police, a
test program on a new
trunked mobile radio
solution (TMR) which
provides province-wide
radio coverage via
trunking, will be initiated.
Pilot Project - Digital
Mapping and Global
Positioning System (GPS)
Digital mapping and
the interaction with a GPS
will improve the
effectiveness and efficiency
with which emergency
police resources are
delivered.
