Public Safety —
RCMP
he RCMP provides
policing services to a large
geographical area of the
municipality –
approximately 95% of the
land mass of the
municipality,
encompassing in excess of
155,000 citizens. Through
five police offices at
Tantallon, Lower
Sackville,
Cole Harbour, Sheet
Harbour, and
Musquodoboit Harbour –
the services of patrol,
uniform policing,
investigations, crime
prevention, and drug and
criminal investigations are
conducted. The
philosophy of community
policing is a “partnership
between the police and the
community.” This is
evident at each of the
detachment offices,
whether it be in the
Sackville office, where the
RCMP work closely with
over 180 community
volunteers; to the
Musquodoboit Harbour
office, where they have
four Citizens on Patrol
groups; to the Tantallon
office, which has four
community policing
offices providing localized
access for the public.
Through the Halifax
RCMP Detachment, the
services of major crime
investigation, highway
patrol, police dogs and
policing at the Halifax
International Airport are
provided. Provision of an
“effective, efficient policing
service which reflects the
uniqueness of... the
municipality and meets the
needs of the rural and
urban areas” is the mission
of the RCMP in the
Halifax Regional
Municipality.
Accomplishments
Street Team
The Street Team, out
of the Tantallon office, has
had considerable success
in seizing more than $2.13
million dollars in illicit
drugs, stolen property and
cash.
Major Case Management
Program
The Halifax
Detachment was the first
in the country to utilize
the Program in its
investigations – it is now
accepted as the standard for
the RCMP and many other
police forces.
Spurs Youth Groups
The Lower
Sackville,
Tantallon and
Cole Harbour
offices support
the youth
groups which
are active in
crime
prevention
initiatives.
Current Initiatives
Youth Drop-In Centre,
Beaver Bank
A joint partnership
with the community to
establish a centre for 15 to
18 year olds.
Restructuring
All areas of service
delivery are being
examined and realigned to
best meet the
communities needs.
Future Development
A growing population
and increasing demands
will present challenges,
impact the police-topopulation
ratio and will
necessitate a responsive
approach.
